Imagine all the crime and death that could be prevented if there was a federal law to prevent metal recycling businesses from purchasing catalytic converters
They aren't metal recycling idiot. They are taking in stripped off catalytic converters and reattaching it to card that had theirs stolen / cut. The autobody shops are just as much to blame as the thieves. There needs to be a law that you cannot buy or use a used catalytic converter and all converters that are installed need to be ID as new in a registry. And the car owner needs to register it if one needs to be replaced. That would stop this.
How about people raise their kids to be law abiding citizens

Yup, and if a large percentage of the laws were revised in this country, including plea bargainiing within the court system, that alone would make an impact.

I drive a Tesla. No catalytic converter to worry about. Also, no worries about oil, spark plugs, fuel filters, carbon monoxide exhaust, oil leaks, antifreeze, water in my gas, dead battery, bad alternator, etc.
