If you're coming to Annapolis, bring along Lady Fair !!!
I’m on my way! I’ll be at the RUclips booth tomorrow 11AM-noon and Sunday 4PM-5PM. Swing on by if you’re around!
Ran-day! I would be a hypocrite if I said that I don’t miss the Captain, but you have managed to keep the channel interesting with great guests and your own boat experiences. Keep bringing us great content, you have my support 💯
Thanks very much Hector! Will do!
Miss the captain Q
Capt Q if you check the comments just wanted you to know that you're missed and I hope you're doing great and enjoying life..
Seconded, thirded, forthed, etc etc etc ;)
We need an interview with the venerable Captain Q!
@volvotango8363 I think that's a great idea.. a episode or a few of Capt Q telling us all about his ⛵️ life.. different boats he's had etc
Great content on the channel revamp. A basic loose sit down with Captian Q. Maybe even a comment or 2 on the boats he saw on the channel. Even if it's 1 time at the end of the season.
It’s refreshing to see you be so honest about new boat ownership !! I’m all in !! tell the captain hello ,we all miss him.
Fair winds ⛵️
Thanks Tom!
Randall, we're enjoying your videos and look forward to next season as you share your journey of b.o.a.t. (break out another thousand) ownership with us.
I particularly appreciate the voice over narration. It's much easier to understand.
Great to hear.. thanks very much. I’ve been learning that sometimes my narration in the moment has too much grunting or profanity… so glad this is working 😂
As a cofounder of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine and a Casco Bay sailor, I congratulate you on your love of bikes and boats. Sorry about your storm damaged port bow.
Keep up the great work! I logged thousands of miles as a kid on a steel bike around Cumberland county… taught me to pack extra clothes for the afternoon sea breeze 👍👍
Life in the not so fast lane. People often think that a large sailboat is less complex than a comparable sized power boat. After all you just raise the sails and off you go. Not true at all of course. Maybe even more complex. After seeing your intro where you look into the wiring locker I recently “explored” a modern yacht and was truly impressed at the layout of the wiring and systems. Built for ease of access to key components, solid connectors, no conflicts with other systems like plumbing, really nice. While modern boat construction is often disparaged compared to older boats, computer design and thinking beyond the factory floor has really made a positive difference.
Ran-day, great to see you back!
Happy to see more of your boat. Great work with the transition of this channel. I think I speak for many of us when I say we’re excited for more content from you Ran-Day.
thanks very much... lots more on the way... more coming with other experts too. cheers
In 2000 I had a 71 Tartan 30, a few alterations from previous owner did not look as if they knew what they were doing. Understatement. I had a boat mechanic look at the engine, and he said ,The Wiring looks like it was done by a spider on Acid!
I know what boat that spider went to work on next!! 😂
The trials and tribulations of boat ownership. But you wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks Randal, missed you
I was so worried you would stop making videos after Captain Q retired.
Thanks Ran Day! Love your content…Love your boat. I can’t wait to see your refit process
Thanks Daniel… it’s going to be a fun ride! Glad to have you aboard
Bloody boats.... I've had 27. Now have a 35ft simple tiller steered Joe Adams designed go boat that's been worked on by an engineer for 5 years. He just loved to work on boats. It has a VHF radio even!!! That's about the electrics. I bought a GPS plotter that has some alligator clips for offshore. There's nothing to go wrong. I singlehanded it 800 miles back from Tasmania and for awhile was sitting on 16kts. Still nothing broke. I keep it anchored off our village 30 miles up a river for no money so the only cost is $120 a year for registration. I self insure and have $2000 worth of anchor and chain for a boat that weighs 3000 kilos. Being fresh water there's no growth on the bottom.
I feel very lucky..... finally figured out boat ownership. Turn 80 next year.
Thrilled with this new format! Our thanks to Captain Q and fair winds to you on your new journey. You are a fabulous videographer, watching your work has ruined every other boat channel for me. Ha! You are providing a good service here and we love watching! Congrats on the new show and thank you for keeping at it!
Really appreciate it, Judy! There are some awesome other channels out there… so I take that as a high compliment, thank you! Glad to have you aboard for the ride!
Hi Randall, did you know that there's a Randalstown in Northern Ireland? If you get to Europe, I'd be more than happy to give you a tour around the Province.
Been with you guys from the start and your content has changed how I look at older sailboats as long term liveaboards, cruisers and passagemakers.
I'll always owe you for that education as well as the highly entertaining way it was delivered.
What you have planned looks to be of great value. As I contemplate following in your footsteps with a fairly similar pedigree of boat. Possibly next year.
Walter might have his hands full. However, if not, I believe he'd be a worthy successor to the Cap'n, should you and he be interested in searching out some more old boats, worthy of investing in and getting back on the water. Or, maybe there's someone else in your extended network who you might like to partner with.
Maybe female this time around?
I understand that the original vlogs had a dual purpose. It taught those wanting to learn, a huge amount about a wide range of boat related topics.
It also documented your own search for a boat. Even if that wasn't intended at the outset ;)
As you said and excuse the parsing. "Hang around with the Cap'n long enough and you end up buying a boat for yourself."
Hey Ran-day love the old salty sea dog you interview like Walter ! specailly like a the salty language !! LOL hilarious !!
Rand-day, I made the same mistake not using double lines and it chewed up the side of my Island Packet just like yours. Hard lesson but it won't happen again! :)
I’m not alone!! Let’s hope we don’t get too many new members to our club
I love your boat... loved it when you and Capt Q went through it.. its got the beautiful green and the classic elegant sailboat look
This should be a masterclass Randay. TY for sharing all of this important knowledge. Blessings to all.
Randy that's all good info. Wow, what a Beard on her bottom, double check thoes zinks.
They are a little wasted!! Not for long though!! Good thinking, Michael!
Bikes and sailboats are a great mix.
Randay!!! Welcome back.
I started following your channel about 2 years ago after I took sailing lessons with a local club. I purchased a small sailboat earlier this year and was able to start sailing last month. It's an American 18 and is perfect for my family to take out on the lake. Thank you for sharing your adventures and knowledge!
Fantastic! Love to hear you’ve jumped in and are getting out on the water and making it a family adventure ❤️
Hi. Congratulations on your American 18. I sail an American 16 day sailer here in No Calif. Wishing you and your family fun and safe sailing.
@@galerae947 thanks!
Keep the clips comming, look forward to the next.
Happy Sailing Ran-Day ;)
crushing it Randaaay.... just show me the next cruiser-able vessel you come along:)
We’ve been waiting for this episode! Congratulations.
Thanks Justin!
nice catch-up man.....keep us in the loop, and THANKS ! ......OnWard.........
Good to see you back. Oh, what a journey you have signed up for.
Send my best to Capt Q
❤
Thanks Kirby!
I have always said sailboats and bikes I know how to fix them!! Don't sweat the little stuff. Electronics never last on a boat. A good compass and achart will get you anywhere. Looks like you are enjoying the boat and that's most important.
Looking good! Nice troubleshooting routine on the genny. Looking forward to more updates!
Ran-day! Great video. I have to admit the videos make this prospect look daunting. Very cool nonetheless. Not sure this is an endeavor for a 50yo pharmacist that dreams of sailing but never has. Who knows. Great stuff, say hi to the ol captain Q.
Great to see you working and enjoying your beautiful yacht randy. 😊
Oh Ran-day..that was ugly..sitting in my boat aka home now with a storm outside and extra lines to the dock.😮😅 Since my father was on his boats always of the extra ropes...I now teasingly call that the "Elzenga norm"...I do sleep peacefully (really?!?!😅) in terms of that tonight in the storm. But so many nice experiences too I see and yes..Walter is right..I will think of that more often too.."relax!! and enjoy the boat"..👍😎❤
I’ll try to keep up with the Elzenga norm from now on… learned the hard way. Welcome to Club Relaxation 👍👍
Iam happy for you man! Keep up the relaxing work!
Glad your back!
I really enjoy these views into the keeping of a boat. Thank you Rand-Day for sharing. Have a great weekend.
Great video Ran-day !!
Keep on doing amazing
love that scheel!
Keep bringing us great content, you have my support 💯
Randay looks like your living the dream looking forward to seeing your journeys
Welcome back!
Wonderful work
Thanks so much. It was driving me nuts foursome reason. I just couldn't remember. Thanks again.
👍👍
Great to hear you have a dual love of sailing and cycling! I’m have the same passions. I thought I was maybe unique but alas. . . Keep up the good work!
I think there are about 5 of us… cheers!!
Beautiful boat Rand!
Love watching the progress.
Thanks 👍
When it is no longer a labor of love and becomes a burden it's to late. What I've learned is, it don't get better Randy. There will always be another problem/project. Between rot, corrosion and the fact that the ocean/lake is trying to put your boat on the bottom 24/7 365. Unless it's on the hard . And even then it's worrisome. I've switched to a canoe and hiking boots. No insurance, stickers and registration. Hell here in Michigan it the only vehicle you can legally operate impaired! Lol. I'm over it. And let me tell you being on the water is all that matters to me no matter the mode of flotation. With all those through hulls I would feel safer in a canoe. I'd be wearing pfd in the slip lol. Simplify. Reduce stress levels. Reduce costs. Find enjoyment in less stressful endeavors is its own reward. But don't stop making videos. Ok?
hahaha... I'm not quite at that place yet to stop either solving boat puzzles or making videos... it's all quite fun to figure these things out. I could use a few less holes but it's worked fine for 50 years now so who am I to question it? ;) thanks, William!
Hi Randy Herbert again, on aboat a really long test lead is very useful on a meter. (TIP opening a circuit to make it 2 and find witch one has a problem halfs the possiblities.)
Cool thanks… I def have some more electrical things to sort through and learn more about
Thank you Randayy
Awe the joys of boat ownership lol. Don"t worry my friend, you will eventually get it all sorted out and Walter is right. Relax and enjoy it. Its a long game. Look forward to catching up with your progress. Give Cap'n Q my best regards. Perhaps we'll see him now and again in future episodes.
What's all this Randall stuff?? Everyone knows that you're name is to remain forever Ran-dayyy.. I really hope you share boat work and projects with us.. it would make for great content..
Hahaha fair enough!! Ran-dayyyy it is. Yup, lots more fun puzzles and work to share
Thanks for sharing! I too recently acquired a sailboat and trying not to get absorbed by the never ending list of improvements I think I need to get done right away. As you I do a little bit of work to improve her, then relax enjoying the moments only a boat can provide (even in bad weather), repeat.
Proud of ya' Randall.
thanks RH! :)
I am so glad I can experience your journey of the joys, trials and tribulations with the one boat that intrigued me most among all those you and Captain Q showcased. (I have the feeling I am not alone in this sentiment.)
If you ever make it across the pond to the Mediterranean, I can only recommend the Croatian Adriatic coast for a wonderful mixture of sailing and biking, especially the islands of Middle and South Dalmatia. Just not betweenJuly and mid-August, as the waters are totally overrun with masses of charter captains. As of mid-August through early October, however, you can enjoy wonderful weather for sailing as well as cooler temps for biking. Late May through June is also wonderful, however the water is not as warm as late summer/early fall.
After that, down the Adriatic Coast to Greece through October.
Greetings from Zadar for now
The southern tip of Greece is good and the Calanques in quieter times.
I think you're doing it right. Work on and sail the boat in equal proportions. I've been doing that for 4 years, working my ass off until sailing season rolls around then cruising it north from the Chesapeake to New England for the summer. Really makes the time and expense worthwhile.
Can't wait to see how you resurrect the genset, because we are also troubleshooting ours.
Another good one Randall. Got a ding this summer and I feel we are on the same journey of learning and enjoying. Going to take a yanmar maintenance and small repair course this spring. You are my good old boat compatiot. And you added just the right amount of eye candy.
hahaha... thanks, Greg... hope your journey is filled with some laughs and good lessons learned. what did you get for a boat? cheers!
I have a Pearson 34-2 from your neck of the woods. Looking forward to the next episode@@YachtHunters
Randay You have a great way with words. Send Cpt Q our warmest regards.
thanks very much. will do
Really enjoy what you are doing on the channel ,like your boat and look forward to seeing how you’re going to refit her.
Thanks!
RAN-Day, I missed you by a day in Annapolis ⛵️ hoping for next year. Great video
Bummer! Sorry it was a last minute decision to put work on hold for a few day. Catch you next time!
Although you have now doubled and more your dock lines May i suggest you invest if some Elke hide and make a sleeve for those lines where thy go around the pilings .It is something we do on the west coast where we have exposed moorings to wind and weather .like you have .or an alternative a multi layered rubber hose you can sleeve over your lines .as you don't have cleats on your dock for mooring. to tie off too..
Cheers and good luck, lucky for me there are people like you that work on their sailboat and post videos about it, thanks. Fuse’s are definitely not cheap these days ( having spares is nice I guess) but using a multi-meter to troubleshoot sure beats just throwing parts at a problem, all the best.
excellent tip... I should have thought multi-meter FIRST... then break out the wallet. I know what to do next time! :)
Ouch!
Randall I know what you mean about being in somewhat over your head. I'm a fairly new owner of an RV which is basically a boat on wheels. That said you're a smart guy and youtube is your friend. Most, but not all, of the time someone has made a youtube video about what you want to work on, take advantage of them. Keep the good stuff coming buddy and please keep us up to date on the captain.
Miss Captain Q, but well done Randay 👍
Oh ouch! You'll get it all done though. See you next time.
Hey Randay they make a product called Hull Shield. You put a few of these transducers just on the inside of your boat and they keep Sea life from growing on your boat. It's around $1500 for a 32 ft sailboat set up and no more antifoul or scraping of the boat. Great reviews on it also. Might be worth a looksy.
Observation the boat moves the piles dont .... Fix old tyres to the piles protects all the boat..
Use sprung ties in bad conditions or you can yank your fittings loose on the boat. Floating jetties can and do break loose ... Sudden acceleration is alarming its the sudden deceleration that hurts 😉
Ran-Day, I know how much repairs cost, I have up my membership. Happy Sailing 🏝⛵
Thanks so much Valérie!! Much appreciated!
I remember when my dad came to the concrete dock way too fast. The bow hit the dock and spilt the dock across and just scrapped the bow. I found out there was a plate in the bow. Bristol 41.1 very tough boat.@@YachtHunters
wow... that's a not-so-fun way to find out about the plate in the bow! but great to know that it was there. Love those Bristols... they seem to last forever! cheers VB!!
Tis a scratch Randy!
Not even a flesh wound!!
I'm glad your keeping up with the channel we will miss Captain Q . Can you please tell me what Captain Q use to call the polished chimeney or Dorado on the deck of a boat . It was named after a person . , first and last named of a man obsessed with keeping them polished . It's driving me crazy that I can't remember. Thanks
That's a Charlie Noble -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Noble_(chimney) Cheers!
So please tell us, did you ever change your dripless stuffing box to a traditional box, or another dripless? Access seems to be a bit of an issue at least from the one picture you shown.
Love the video, missed the regulararity of them but will take what you have
👍👍
Bring back Cap Q
❤❤❤
I ignored my genset problems and enjoyed my vessel and years slipped by and big mistake. Fix it asap.
Well if that’s your first boat, it is the equivalent of someone playing a little league baseball and then stepping into Yankee Stadium and facing a big league pitcher. 😳😳
Seems just about right! Occasionally getting hit by the pitch 🤕
@@YachtHunters well at least you got on base.
Heads up Ran-day, the patreon link in the description isn't working
👏👏👍👍
I've been avoiding scraping my hull in fear I will be eaten up by brine shrimp. They get all over youwhen scraping. Did you have the same experience? What gear did you use when scraping?
Power washed with a decent power spray hose… got most of them off. The stubborn ones I just used my teeth and ate them 😉
@@YachtHunters Makes sense... Good time to get the calories!
Frank Howarth of boats doppelgänger
Thanks for the intro to his channel! Cool stuff 👍
Oh no! I’m a cyclist and just bought a sailboat. I think I’ve just found a kindred spirit!
i think there are about 5 of us!! time to explore!
The link to your Patreon doesn't work
Good catch! Thank you!
I would put 2 likes but it won't let me. Buy a good ohm meter with a clamp and learn how to use it to stop the vert expensive guessing.
I needed you a few months ago! I'm inexperienced enough to not think of that FIRST... what a great tip... next time, I'll start there. thanks!!
Don’t be a ocd engineer. Unless you have deep pockets.
Definitely shallow pockets… 😉 I’ve got orders to relax and have fun with it 👍cheers
It's a place to get away from friends and family.
Would be interesting to know the real story...did Capt. Q really decide to step back, or was there something behind the scenes and he was shuffled out the door? I know I'm not the only one who's curious as to what really happened. We'll never know. Either way, what was once a great and fairly unique channel is now just yet another YT sailing channel. I'm subscribed to plenty of them as it is, and there's nothing in this one unique enough to keep me interested any longer. Accordingly, I'm unsubscribing.
hate to see you go HDNL... you've been a great contributor/commenter for over a year... thanks for being a part of it
