Please don't stop the videos. I'm still looking for my boat and have been searching for a 34-38 ft boat to single hand. Hoping to buy one in the next 6 mths and head down the ICW to south Fla. With a little practice and some schooling i'll get out there soon. I watch everyone of your videos and would love to find a Pearson 385 ( My dream boat ) but they don't come around very often . I have learned so much from the Captain and Ran-day that i feel confident i could inspect a sail boat and get most of it right just by what i have learned from you all. Thank you both for being the sailors and teachers that you are. I bet there's a lot of hopeful sailors out there looking for advice from a experienced sailor and waiting for the answers you all have. THANK YOU BOTH....

@Ran-Day Sweet! This is rewarding prior to work done!!
I seen another new used boat owner was using a mobile water disalanator purifier which was renewable capable as well as fossil..
I seen a lithium mobile power pack which was stackable where you can pull a section for dingy use?

Ran-Day It will be an interesting experience, reworking an old boat. I am getting a Pearson 365 back into shape. Wiring issues have a lot to be desired (old boats tend to have a hodgepodge of add on or reworked wiring). I have a background in Marine Electricity and Electronics so a good challenge. Looking forward to the rest of your series on rehab. Labeling and proper color coding of the wires will help out a lot. Nigel Calder has a great manual on Mechanical and Electrical Systems that could help you (Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual).

Yeah, I had a Westerly sailboat with an electrical system that looked like that. What I did was to pull out all the unused cables. This took awhile, but when done, things were waaaay more simple and I improved after that. I believe if you pull out all the dead headed cables you will begin to get a grip on what is going on.

I don’t think you should rip out any electrical. Sort it all out, use plastic tyes, and label everything you know. Down the road sometime you might find out you tore out something you shouldn’t have. At least give it some time before you do that and know that what you do rip out you definitely don’t want.

If there's one thing I've learned about admiring all of these beautiful sailboats is that if I don't have unlimited funds I shouldn't buy a boat longer than 26 feet long, one without a fixed keel. I want a fiberglass, (not wood,) boat I can spend my time sailing and floating around on, reading and napping on for a week or 2 at a time, then load it up on a trailer and haul it home, and not spend most of my waking hours working on, worrying about, or tossing money into it. Sails in good shape, portable coolers for food and drinks, an electric trolling motor, battery-powered lighting, a pair of lithium batteries for aux power, jugs of water, sponge baths, a camp stove, and 4 or 5 flexible PV panels and I'm good to go. I can admire as they sweep me all of the majestic, teak an mahogany decked and trimmed boats dotted with glowing, polished brass and chrome, then I can go back to reading my book in peace. Captain Q and Ran-day satisfy my urges for more.

Ran-Day: Great tour and description of the host of little “gotchas” that come with buying anything used (i.e. car, boat, trailer, vacation home, etc…). My advice: buy several bottles of Goo-Gone to get rid of any adhesive left over after you peel off those red Dymo labels on the electrical panel, buy a couple bottles of 91% alcohol to get rid of those labels written with a Magic Marker, and buy a Brother label-making unit and start labelling everything with nice, easy-to-read, black on white 1/2” labels. Labelling switches, pumps, water lines, wire bundles, through holes, etc… makes a world of difference and adds a level of professionalism and clarity that can’t be beat. Pretty soon that Scheel 45 is going to look like it just came off the factory floor! Great job on everything you Captain Q do together! Looking forward to your next video update.

    • @YachtHunters

Thanks, Darryl! You got it… great suggestion. I picked up a thermal printer (no running ink) to do the trick.. so important to be able to identify things without having to place the role of archeologist 😉

    • @darrylhedges1372
      @darrylhedges1372 2 года назад +8

@@YachtHunters If that thermal printer doesn't prove satisfactory, try the Brother PTouch model PT-D600 (available at any Staples or OfficeMax store). It has been an easy-to-use, versatile, and hard working unit for me. You can make 1/2", 3/4", and 1" labels in a snap, and the labels will hold-up to just about any environment! You can also choose from about 6 or 8 different fonts as well.

Don’t know if those diesels have zinc anodes in them, might be wise to check ? All the best. Greg from Australia 🍺

Beautiful boat, Randay - the amount of light down below is incredible, and I'm very jealous of that bathtub.
I appreciate the electrical tangle of an old boat - the first impression is "oh no! I gotta do something about this" But remember that it's been sailing along just fine like that for decades now. First, do no harm.
I found that after a few months I got familiar enough with everything to start pulling out old wiring, and eventually ended up with a nice big hairball of copper that was no longer connected to anything.
Once all the unused wiring was removed - the original wiring was rather neat and trustworthy.

Beauty of a boat. Great bones and lovely lines.
My two cents: make it safe and functional to last a year. During that year, keep a notebook with you to fill with plans, ideas, questions, and notes. Then haul it out in the fall when you are ready for a major refit. The electrical is ugly, the engine needs work, but that inaccessible through-hull scares the bejeebies out of me.
Step 1: make sure the life raft is functional and ready to deploy.
Looking forward to seeing your journeys, both diy, and seafaring.

  • @robertfreeman2322

What an awesome vessel. A bird's nest of wires can be cleaned up with wire ties once you figure out what's actually still being used. The previous owner of my vessel cut all the ties while adding stuff and never took the time to tie it back up afterwards so wires were hanging loose everywhere. I found that once I got at it with the small wire ties it all looked so much better. The under sink through hull should be addressed for sure especially if you can't get to it. I eliminated my through hulls by going with a sea chest in the engine room that goes to a manifold to feed everything and a ball valve at the manifold to shut water off to each one. The sea chest feeds my Main engine, AC, Genset, Head, forward and aft washdown pumps and water maker and I have 2 spare plugged valves I don't use. Everything that needs and gets fed saltwater comes from one spot and all of them can be shut off quickly. It looks like you have plenty of room in your engine room for it. I look forward to all your videos. That old salt Captain Q will help you out I'm sure! Regards

I am an electrical engineer, having designed boat power systems among other things. I would not redo the wiring. It's just a lot of unnecessary work. I would, however, figure out where each of the wires goes, label them, and remove the ones no longer in use. If you see any frayed wires or broken insulation, then replace the wire. It's not rocket science...

That's going to be a lot of work tracking down all those wires but when you get it finished with modern panels it won't be nearly as daunting. Great video. As far as the electrical system is concerned, certainly don’t tear it out until you have a complete plan and system wiring diagram with wire sizes and colors laid in. Also, only use stranded copper at a minimum. I would also replace power circuit switched with sealed toggle hydraulic magnetic circuit breakers as you can afford. The way i might start this project would be to define each electrical item to be used. List its power requirement as a start. I also suggest keeping separate ac and dc circuits. Don’t run them in the same wiring trays. Good luck going forward. OleDave

Wahoo! So great to finally see the big reveal 😊. Nice job using the scale diagram to illustrate the walkthrough. It’d be very cool to have a 3d model to help figure out how to repurpose space wasted on the tub/genset/electric etc. to max out the aft cabin for liveaboard comfort. Saloon has great potential too. So many projects, ha! Yer gonna need more patreons 😊.

Congrats Ran-Day. When I saw the original episode I fell in love with the layout. It is going to take some serious work (in addition to what you already have done) but it is well on the way to becoming the PB for me.

Had to go back and watch the review video. She is a beautiful boat and its good to see her in the water. It will be even better to see her under sail and hopefully progress videos of her as Randay progresses with her refit. Looks like a very nice investment Randay.

Great job guys. Talk about role-reversal!!
And Congratulations! Randay!!! (Where was seadog? Maybe Randay needs a mascot)
I’ve Been looking forward to this episode since you hinted at it awhile back!
Having gone through similar surprises with our 30’ SeaRay I can feel your pain/joy. (More joy-less pain. $o far).
I Love the follow up theme as well. Having watched this episode pre-purchase, now uncovering the smaller details. It’s a great format.
Would really like to see you guys revisit some past gems with their new owners.
You two are great at this. It is by far my favourite RUclips channel. (I only watch 3, they are all sailing related).
All the best- thanks for sharing!!

Batteries forward for the windlass and bow thruster is to reduce the voltage drop, which is good. The charging system leaves a lot to be desired though.

😮😯😲unfortunately Ran-day you bought the "LIST" from the previously overwhelmed owner, which through up his hands.
👍 BTW, it is a nice sailboat.
p.s. the aft Cockpit, later, can be made like the Armel aft cabin. Opps, I just suggested a longer list.

LOVED THIS BOAT FROM THE FIRST TIME I SAW HER. So unique and so practical. Need crew? I'm your man. Just stick me in the aft cabin and call me when it's my turn at the wheel. Ps, While I am NOT an electrician, I have rewired my boat and I understand the principles of electrical circuitry.

Yes sir,,, you have a ton of work ahead of you. Hope you don't have a day job!!
Curious, as you said this was a former vlog of Captain Q. Sure there was a $$ amount to that vlog. How close to the price did you get it for. The reason I ask is I wonder what the average "play-room" to the price is norm!!
Good luck with that electrical work, remember one very important detail...
Electricity and water DO NOT play well with each other. Get that electric panel away from that shower area... Or seal the heck out of ALL your racetracks to the said area... Conduit, conduit, conduit!!!

Great boat Randle. And was a great price ....will be awesome when you make all the changes....I have a question for you and the captain....two boats I love are the gulfstar 50 and the nauticat 44...you guys reviewed one of each at $150,000 ....can I get your opinion on which is a better boat. ie .. better built, better sailer, better live aboard....any comments would be great...

Nice to see Ran-Day getting a starring role. Have you considered a separate channel? "First Mate R"? She's a lovely boat. Still unconvinced by some of the layout. I don't love that rear cockpit, feels like wasted space and it means the rear cabin has split bunks and they are almost like quarter berths... It's the master cabin!

Hope you read this? Great boat - Dreadful wiring. Can I suggest you buy a good quality Tone Tracer. This will help you find cables, their route, breaks and shorts throughout the vessel. Make sure it is one with a sender and receiver unit with multiple connections. They are good for electrical, co-axial and data cables.
My background is Marine radio and electronics, without a Tone Tracer I would have been at a total loss when fault finding on the kind of mess you have.
Best of luck getting the boat ship shape.
