- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Walter Schulz is a man obsessed with a 1929 Elco Flat Top Classic Powerboat - which is now putting up for sale. He has owned and restored this boat TWICE! The second time he restored the hull using a cold-molding process to protect the wood planks & structure for the next 100 years. He said it would be good until 2123 AT LEAST. We detail the accident that led up to the second renovation and some background around cold-molding techniques and guidelines.
*Proceeds from the sale of this boat will go towards the Shannon River Marine Heritage Foundation

Walter is an absolute treasure!! Thanks for sharing him with us!
Fair winds ⛵️
May Neptune bless and keep Walter Schulz, an amazing craftsman and a wonderful human being.
Im not big on power boats, but that ship is a friggin work of art. Absolutely beautiful. I look forward to getting Walter's book. Hes a very interesting dude. On one hand, a salty old shipwright and sailor, on the other a kind old guy who wants to share his knowledge and experience with the world, or at least with anyone wholl listen.
Well said… it is a stunning working & floating museum (with some cushy modern amenities). Thanks Krock!
As a lover of old wooden boats this 29 Is a dream boat for me .Especially now that i am retired .and to see him thinking about helping the disabled to be able to enjoy the water like the rest of us has struck a deep cord in me to try to do the same .and here on the west coast in Washington state there is no shortage of boats of all kinds .I thank you both for this .Now i have some deep thinking to do to see if i can make this happen here .
Thanks, Randay, for a great interview with Walter.
Glad you enjoyed it
Walter is a boat genius. Amazing boat building . Once again another great video. Thanks Randy
Thanks for bringing us more Walter
What a beautiful, amazing, historical, and such a unique boat! Thank you so much for the video and dialogue! So wonderful to see! Thank you for continuing the work and all that you do for us!!!
Beautiful work. My hat's off to a fellow Shulz and Ran-Day. Great videos.
What a guy! What a boat! Wonderfull video.
Walter is an amazing man!!! Besides Capt Q Walter is the only other person who i could listen to talking about his love of boats for hours and hours.. he's an amazing craftsman as well and most people who have had the success he's had would enjoy their retirement and not care about others yet he's the exact opposite. Willing to do whatever it takes to leave the world in a better place than before he lived.. God bless Walter and his family and the same goes for the Capt Q crew
thanks very much, Ben, much appreciated!
Interesting profile of a man and his dream. The art of maintaining a wooden yacht is quickly disappearing and once gone will only be viewed through videos like this one. Thank you.
Excellent episode Randay. Looking forward to the next one on your own boat.
coming soon... lots of fun updates!
What a fantastic interview and video, well done
Thank you Randall...and thank you Walter... just for being you!
Thanks for watching RJn👍
Thanks for bringing Walter’s stories to life. While being a generous sage willing to share his knowledge about old boats, his heart for those who are struggling (disabilities or other circumstances) is profoundly inspiring! I applaud you both for a warm and insightful episode, keep it up and see you in Annapolis
Walter is such a treasure! The Witch is a beautiful yacht. Excellent video Randall!
Walter is a cultural icon ... someone with that big a heart deserves to lauded throughout the community. Thank you Randaaay!!! Once again, another great episode with a great guest, I just wish that I could afford a Shannon for myself -- alas ... items with such quality are often out of reach for the average person ... but i can always hope and dream.
Another great episode with Walter, really enjoy hearing his story and what motivates his commitment to excellence .
Thanks! and what a boat!
Another fantastic creation, Ran-day! Walter is the best -- always enjoy hearing his wisdom and learning from him! I can't wait to get his book, and I'll also reach out to the foundation to give support! Thank you for keepin' the good work going!!! Love it!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ episode Randal.
Shared.
Thanks
Wow that is a pretty boat and she'll be around a lot longer because of Walter. I'm sure she turns a lot of heads when she comes into port. Bravo
Wow, I've been subscribed to this channel, and I didn't even know the name of it changed. I already missed one episode!
Nice man.
Walter I did a restoration of a elco 1926 62 l.o.a it took us 5 years and I think somewhere in my family picture books my great uncle used to fish with Ernest hemmingway on Pilar they where good freinds
outstanding... i will pass along the message to Walter. Thanks for sharing
Outstanding work. I have spent the last 12 years restoring a 1957 Chris Craft. I cold moulded the entire hull. I would love to chat with you about some challenges I am facing. Would you be open to a conversation?
As soon as he said the kid came aboard with the duffel bag I knew it was gonna be full of wooden plugs and shoring materials. We had a bag like that in all of our DC (damage control) lockers on the destroyer I was on in the Navy. Good to have in a pinch. Don't need to seal the hole, just plug it enough to survive.
They would have sunk without that bag.. good lesson for the rest of us 👍 thanks for your service!
whats the range on a powerboat like this?
❤
Didn't Elco make PT boats?
Indeed… there were several variants but they were the design lead as well I believe
I could watch you talk to this guy all day long. I feel like another 25 minutes longer would still be to short. Thanks for continuing your channel. It’s great!
Walter, Captain Q and so many others have so many stories to tell. Where you may not find youth and vigor, you'll find something so much more valuable. They have experience, knowledge, and at the crossroads of that, wisdom. Thanks for this wonderful vision of the past, present and future!
Also, every shop needs a mascot. Good job, Sally the cat!
What a beautiful yacht. It is easy to see why Walter fell in love with it. Thank you Randay for another excellent episode with Walter.
Glad you enjoyed it
Wonderful video, looking forward to reading Walter’s book.
Thanks Randay for sharing this delightful time with Walter and his amazing ship ⛵️⛵️⛵️😊
Glad you enjoyed it
If Walter Shulz is talking I am listening. Love this guy and his boats. I completely understand how he wants to hide the "ugly electronics. " I am a fan of antiques and a fan of Shannon boats as well. Thanks for the great video Randy
Like the new format and content. I do hope you still have reviews of boats that are for sale also. I know Captian Q is retired but a small 2-3 min sit down chat with him on various subjects would be great. Maybe a quick chat the begining and end of the season? Just a thought. Keep up the great work Randy.
This week's yacht is gorgeous. Walter's history is very interesting. I personally appreciate the bleeps that censor the "salty" language. Thank you for keeping Yacht Hunter family friendly. Great job Randall.
Glad you enjoyed it. thank you!
Great story and just goes to show electric motors were there at the start and they will be increasingly in the future... all be it possibly through a hybrid system ..
When i read 50ft elco cold moulded ... I immediately jumped to the PT/MGB boats.
I love listening to this Walter fella.
Same!
Walter is one of a kind ! Also I have a nick name for him Capt. Salty ! Why Capt. Salty you ask ; well because of his salty language ! lol !
❤Walter is a Saint.
Excellent video,
Thanks so much.
There is one of these over in wickford, queen of scots. Same boat but yours is in much better shape
Nice video. Welcome back. Missing the Q!
beauty
Such a beautiful boat suits Walter to a tee, a classic just like its owner
Walter, don’t ever think you re not RAD!
I love Walter because he is just as boat crazy as I am.
BRAVO !
Great...👍❤
Love your content. One bit of technical feedback. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned. There is a volume difference between the talking jazz interlude music (love the jazz). I have the volume turned up for the talking and then have to turn it down in-between. This wasn't the case in the old Captain Q series.
thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I'll keep an eye on those levels..
The cold mounding process is very interesting. The boat remains a wooden, bur takes on the strength and reliability of epoxy.😅
and the laminate monocoque shell becomes nearly indestructible... maybe the purist wooden boat fans won't like it but it sure does a nice job of preserving something in a straight-forward manner. cheers
I can't believe Electric Boat Company hasn't scooped her up.
great idea! A working museum piece!
Hi here in Cape Town South Africa V&A Waterfront.. there is the same type of fairy that run on steam.. but i think it's a copy of the original because it's glass fibre
Just love the content of these vids.. I grew up building ship in bottles as a hobby.. then joined up with Naval Cadets instead of scouts.. then soon as i was out of school my dad who worked in a ship yard got me work with him.. The SA Navy declined me 4 times.. today I still work on ships... I work doing repairs.. Coral Sea De Beers mining ship I removed both fore and aft winches. I love the classic ships.. I remember sitting at the ocean watching sailing yacht go by.. it's my dream to have one of my own some day..
Too much yuking…yuk yuk yuk…. Otherwise nice vid
lotta yukking ;)
I got my organic tea, made myself comfy on my sofa and ready to watch Walter!!! I am a happy "run a ground temporarily sailor".
hahahah enjoy the stay and rest up for some future adventures :)
This boat is a floating palace
incredible amenities with 3-zone air conditioning as well... quite posh!! thank you
THIS Boat cost $25,000 in 1929.
I love the way all of the modern gear is hidden behind the classic fittings and panels. The ultimate resto-mod. Walter is an amazing individual!
Such a great story Randy.
Thank you so much!!
Nice to see your videos but I always wonder .... What news of Capt Q ?
he's enjoying some well-earned retirement time :)
Fabulous. I see that his young protégé Capt Jack of Sailing Ocean Melody might soon be setting sail.
@@michaelhicks3909 we have a special place in our hearts for the Sailing Melody crew... can't wait to see their journey!!
So so beautiful! Great job!
What's the status with Captain Q?
CQ retired from the channel this summer… check out the farewell episode 😎
Hi Randy and Walter, thank you for your wonderful video I just love old sailing boats. Unfortunately I lost my leg in 2000 and8 am and now I am very financial to buy a yacht but it’s too late for me anyway love and appreciate what you’re doing , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the big island 🧑🏾🦽🦘🐨🏝️🇦🇺🌏🐬🏝
Hey Cliff! We're hoping there are some alternatives for you to get out on the water... perhaps there are some organizations near you where you can get out on the water without having to take on the challenge of yacht ownership? let us know if we can help... (shoot us an email if you think we can help business@yachthunting.com) Cheers!
Amazing and so beautiful! Thank you Randall for the videos. Great to see the amount of knowledge and the passion Walter has!
couldn't agree more. thanks, Fernando
Really, really nice boat. Hopefully the new owner will appreciate it as much as Walter does. As far as the foundation goes there are lots of other sailing youtubers out there, maybe he could enlist thier support. Three that come to mind are Sailing with Zatara, Gone with the Wynns and Tula's Endless Summer. Maybe he could get a booth at the Annapolis boat show. Many times shows like that have free booths for non-profits. Good luck with everything and give the kitty a pat on the head for me.
Good ideas JL!! Thanks!!
Will you be at the Annapolis Boat Show this year?
Not 100% confirmed but it seems like ‘probably’. I’ll let you know
Shared this video with my friends @ The City Island Current....I live in close proximity.... correspondence will be urged....
Lotta boat history around there!
Yes....even regarding alankew
I am astonished and disappointed. This so-called "cold molding" technique at best only extends the life of a wooden hull a few years and renders the boat virtually worthless. It is almost impossible to obtain a perfect mechanical bond between the cold molded hull and the wood. Yes it can be done but almost never works out. The additional weight causes problems and the outer hull is rigid versus the non-rigid wooden hull. The difference in rigidity causes the bond to break and then you have a huge mess.
I am also astonished and disappointed to see such a misinformed comment after decades of epoxy cold molded wood success. We must still have "experts" around that confuse slapping polester fberglass over a wood boat hull that was disastrously done in the 1960s and 1970s with epoxy cold molding. It is a long-proven and documented fact that the epoxy bond between two pieces of different wood is stronger and more longer lasting than the original wood. Sadly, the only problem with epoxy cold molding is the great expense, or we could save more wood boats from the chainsaw man.
Great story and the Foundation is inspiring
I think so too!
