I prefer the screw togeather cutlery sets, especailly the ones that have the option to "add" a segment to the spoon. What this means is you have good "rigid" knife, fork, tea spoon, soup spoon. BUT you can add the segment from one of the others, say the tea spoon to the soup spoon to get a long handle spoon, for mixing ingredients in a pot or... eating out of MRE's.
I agree. As a novice backpacker, I believe in keeping it light, simple, functional without draining your wallet. This BBQ kit seems to have miss the spot of being simple and functional with folding utensils and it's defiantly cost too much...
Well, guess I'm different. I used a long handled titanium spoon for years. Got one of those folding spoons and love it. Fits in my pot along with my stove, fuel, windscreen, lighter and small towel. I never do the prepackaged dehydrated meals, too expensive. Make my own and use quart sized zip loc bags. It's really handy to just grab my cook set and go, everything's in there. Also, for a cup, I use an Imusa 10cm cup. Can buy cup and spoon for like $6-7 total for both.
Interesting set. I like the titanium (which is why the $$$), but as Luke points out - there are some design question marks. The handles and the vent - it almost seems these are designed by folks who have never really camped or hiked and camped. They have the lightweight part down, but the rest needs some help.
As usual an interesting review and worthy of 8.10 viewing time😂 Regards the advertised volumes I did a quick compare with a couple of my pots/mugs both the very expensive (Evernew) and the not so expensive (Lixada) and found the same result. To get the advertised volume you have to fill the things right to the brim😂 I expect that to be the case in the majority of these type of pots. Regards from deepest Dorset England 👍
The way they measure the volume is the standard way of doing it. If you take a look at Toaks their 650 ml pot will take 675 ml if you fill it t the brim so when they state 650 that is not the amount of water you can cook but simply the volume of the cup/pot. Normally the max fill is the highest graduation on the cup/pot. I have not seen any manufacturer stating the actual max fill for boiling water as the size of their product
You should of added an addendum to the con about the drain/vent hole in the lid. If it's really an issue, it could easily be solved with a couple minutes of time, a drill, and a drill bit. Make the existing hole bigger, or add a couple of additional ones.
All these noname ti ware pots are the same thing from China, just branded with the seller's store. I got the 400ml pot and the 550 from Timberbrother on Amazon. The 400 was a gift, but it was, I think, $20. The 550 was $27 ish(?). The did not come with cutlery. I purchased a toaks Ti folding handle spork for something like $11. I only take the larger pot with me on overnights and a gsi infinity mug. I dehy my own meals and this system works well for me.
Luke, I'm an old guy trying to get into camping but it appears I can't do the ground and I'm trying to dial it in on a budget. It seems like the smartest, most agile set-up is the litefighter 1 on a cot. I've got great Klymit sleeping pads and I've also got a complete hammock rig which I've yet to test. Thanks!
Hey Luke. This kit is currently $36 on Amazon, which I didn't think was bad. I have the BBQ folding grill and love it. I am a bit anal-retentive regarding having gear match when possible (I know...'m working on it). Toaks 450ml with lid is $25 everywhere. So I'm getting the cutlery set for another $11. I can live with that as a spare set. I DO plan on drilling additional small holes in lid, great point in review. I'll give it a shot and let you know brother! Thanks as always.
My favorite utensil when camping is the Sea to Summit Ultralight spork. It's got that really long handle which is awesome for freeze dried food and has a great angled head for canned food as well. It also weight about as much as a pencil. There is no way I'd pick up a set with utensils less useful than that one.
I love my Keith titanium canteen set. Very expensive but since I use it a lot I'm happy to have bought it. Regards the cutlery set, check out the baladeo camping set. The knife is decent enough to cut steak.
Great review, I will just stick with my Stanley adventure cook set and my cheap wal mart stainless cup with the uco spark and knife combo. Yeah it weighs more but it's just all around better for me. Removed the green cups and I keep a can of sterno, bandanna, 7.5 Oz can of corned beef hash, 4 packets of tasters nasty and a cut down sponge with scrubbing side nested in the stainless cup.
As for the cutlery set, besides the cons you mention, to me a dedicated single purpose eating knife is just a waste to carry. I wouldn't go out without a decent versatile blade , so if I need a knife to eat with I'll use that.
bagged dehydrated food was once connected to extreme conditions survival such as high altitude mountaineering and perhaps outerspace ...now it represents hyper consumerism & laziness. Lets see if you can do more then boil water and open plastic bags.
Kit might be worth $30, might. Cup/pot only $15 to $20. I have a spoon that folds up; can't remember how I ended up with it. It is only useful for stirring coffee or tea. Thanks for the honest review.
I just recently bought the cup only. It has 3 holes-haven't tried it yet for boiling. I find it a bit small, but it is a nice cup. I wish the lid could be locked on. As is, it will likely go missing eventually. It will nest in Toaks pots such as the 750ml. Would I recommend it? If 450 ml is big enough for you, yes.
I have the same impression on this kit. In addition: • The cutlery has 2 needless moving parts which make 2 potential points of failure. • The cutlery is harder to clean in the field due to its moving parts. Summary: I would't pay a single Dollar for this kit, sorry.
Thanks! I'm actually looking at buying a titanium pot for an upcoming thru hike instead of packing the much larger JetBoil. I was looking at a few on Amazon, this is one I'd probably scroll past, thanks for the info👍
3:15 The capacity rating is a valid point, . . . or is it? Are there actually *any* ultralight cups/pots that don't measure capacity to the brim? Also, the point about the lid not sitting flat ... Are we supposed to store the utensils outside the pot in the stuff sack?
What a want: 220-250 ml nest-able titanium cups/mugs that don’t burn my hand with hot tea in them. Either with handles or double-walled. Important: doesn’t burn my hand. What I don’t need: to heat it over a fire. Been looking a while now.
For what ur getting isn't worth the price in my opinion ive got standard stainless steel cups and my Stanley cook set and thats works the best ive also got the unco cutlery set and they clip together as we all k ow and its a good set think I gave 3.00 bucks each set thanx luke for this review a d ur honesty on this set
Thanks! This looks like something i would buy and later be disappointed with. oh, and why for the love of god does the cutlery not fit into the cup and the lid close snugly? That would drive my ocd up the wall.
Very close to the 700ml/750ml Tomshoo pot I got from AlliExpress. It had the bag and top and had slightly different-shaped handles. It did not have the cutlery kit. It cost only slightly north of $20. I don't believe it has a hole in the top, but is that really an issue when you can always just leave the lid open a crack? And I can't say I'm looking to drain anything from a perforated top, so not really an issue for me.
So much of that kind of stuff isn't worth the money they are asking, thanks for the review, I'll stick with my long handled spork. I always carry a pocket knife anyway so why would I need a knife.
Yeah, nah...Ill stick to my Stanley pot and Walmart Ozark Trails metal cup. The Stanley pot fits right inside the cup, and the lid fits both the pot and cup. Not to mention I can put my 110g fuel canister, butane stove and small lighter inside the whole set up.
Could take your drill and make a few more holes in the top. Really don't see the cup being a benefitting factor unless making a beverage. The cutlery, looks ok if your not eating out of a bag. But I wouldn't pay more than 10 for it. Overall I see 25 for kit more realistic. I have used the Walmart plastic camping cutlery eating a 1/2" steak cooked over a camp fire without any issues.
Are there any Titanium sets out there the are for extended time in the bush/camping? Something that could cook something more voluminous than half a Ramen noodle.
They wanted to name it "BBQ" so bad, they did a "reverse acronym" but change it a little to be smart and avoid copyright issues. It just looks and sounds weird, even if it's not on purpose, anyone could see that it clearly said "BBQ". The worst part, you can't even use that kit for BBQ....
I used the foldable spoon and the folding part ended up not staying straight. I had to tape the handle of the spoon when it bends to keep it extended. Yuck
It is expensive. As Luke said, the expensive part is the cutlery, you can get similar cups for $20, even less for Chinese no name cups. But the cutlery for whatever reason is pretty expensive, even straight from China the cutlery costs about as much as a 420ml cup.
Use a Gsi Cup (Stainless Steel) and Cuttlery for let’s say 25 Usd max. The Primus Cuttlery is triple A stainless Steel and with the GSI Cup in the 35 USD Range. One of the large Swiss Retailer gives the Cuttlery for 9USD in good quality. If that is 35 Gramm or 26 doesnt make a difference. The GSI handles are the best on The Market. If you’re a large Coffee drinker use GSI Emaile. Weight is highly irrelevant for a Weekend or so. And those GSI Tools don’t break.
I think you were too hard on this kit, Luke. I really like the cutlery. You have to remember that not everyone is making freeze-dried meals out on the trail so they don’t necessarily need a long-handled spoon. It may not work for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for a lot of other people.
It might have its place for someone but it looks like junk to me. there's aspects that I do like but I agree with the price assessment. It's just too pricey for a set that I wouldn't use all of. There's more affordable options with better name recognition and return polices based off your needs.
I require more caffeine that dinky lil cup. I'll stick with my shorty 550 Lixada, Kmart Grease pot with aluminum colman messkit lid, and polished bol longhand ti spork of course, for compact capacity and weight there's no better combo
A got a set of 2 titanium cups from a camping website one is 450ml about 2/3 of the way so it's probably a 600 ml to the top and a 900ml cup both come with storage bags for around 40 very pleased with it
"I'm going to bring a fork, a spoon, AND a knife in my one pot, ultra light titanium kit" - said no backpacker ever.
Foldable ti Spork and a Victorinox Classic SD as your knife/multitool, all you'll ever need.
ya seems pricey to
It’s so cool that you still do reviews and not just camping, I love your channel man!!!
I can’t believe that the lid doesn’t sit flat while the utensils are in the cup. Not very well thought out. Thanks for the review, Luke.
Minor nitpick….why isn’t it 500ml? It’s so close, just give me a half litre! It makes it so much easier to do water calculations.
@Sean
One could say that about any size cup/pot. Why 700 ml, they could make it 750 instead. Why 1.3 L, could easily be 1.5.
@@xenaguy01 Well the comment was more about making calculations easier and calculating with 0,5 is easier than with 0,45 or 0,75
@@Jinb-ut7bx
I believe it was specifically sized for nesting purposes. (Maybe?)
I agree. As a novice backpacker, I believe in keeping it light, simple, functional without draining your wallet. This BBQ kit seems to have miss the spot of being simple and functional with folding utensils and it's defiantly cost too much...

The serration on that knife looks like it wouldn't cut even the most tender of vegetables and meat.

The handles and the vent - it almost seems these are designed by folks who have never really camped or hiked and camped. They have the lightweight part down, but the rest needs some help.
Thanks for all agenda free reviews 🙃
I purchased a cheap version of this from Walmart. 3 years later it still works fine
I've got a Spork similar to this cutlery set. The hinge part gets mess in it when stiring a coffee.

Exactly my thoughts too , they are all at it
I do like those grab handles. And you can put a stick in there to lift the lid so you can see if the water is boiling.
You should of added an addendum to the con about the drain/vent hole in the lid. If it's really an issue, it could easily be solved with a couple minutes of time, a drill, and a drill bit. Make the existing hole bigger, or add a couple of additional ones.
Interesting. They could improve the handles though.
What about for the spoon 🥄 remember

$40? You can get a 750ml Toaks Titanium kit for less! It doesnt come with the cutlery, but so what? It’s almost double the size.
Looks like Alpkit Mytimug in UK. I went with Toaks as lighter, less rattly handles and the lid's handle stays up better.
My favorite utensil when camping is the Sea to Summit Ultralight spork. It's got that really long handle which is awesome for freeze dried food and has a great angled head for canned food as well. It also weight about as much as a pencil. There is no way I'd pick up a set with utensils less useful than that one.
I like it for just the fact that it's small, compact and you can just throw it in the bag all together!

For that price you could get a military canteen and mess kit. Might weigh a bit more but I see it as function over form
As for the cutlery set, besides the cons you mention, to me a dedicated single purpose eating knife is just a waste to carry. I wouldn't go out without a decent versatile blade , so if I need a knife to eat with I'll use that.

Super nice camera quality of late. :D *thumbs up*
Outstanding video quality 👍
Toaks titanium cup and Toaks long spork. I own a lot of Toaks products and they all are top notch.
You are correct about the cutlery
Y'all, just spring for the Heavy Cover canteen kit and spork. You'll never regret it.
The kit is as difficult as the name! Good review as always.

I mean how hard would it be to take a regular fork knife and spoon?
That is the very last thing on my list a long spoon for my freeze dried meals on the trail.
How much will it cost me getting all my camping gear, 1st time trail hopper Luke. Really would help with some advice, thanks Mathew.

Magic and camping gear? I had no idea Brian Brushwood did so many different things!

Seems a bit expensive for a cup, spoon, fork and knife.
It's made out of the same metal as the SR-71 and some deep diving submarines.
But I'm not sure it's worth it.
@@foxcm2000 yes, Titanium is light and durable, but still...

Nice concept, but misses the mark on execution and price. I don't like the handles. I could see how people could get burned.

I would put a slither of wood down the handle hinge to make it stiff.
How long till the fork or spoon folds during use?
😊 fine! Seaching a Ultra light coffee Set a mill and something to make real coffee! Shout bikepacking friendly ! Have anyone a idea??

To be fair, to say the utensils are too short to eat a bagged meal with isn't fair. The company designs them to be used with the cup.
Strenght and honor like on the gladiator movie LOL somebody's playin cowboy and indians in the woods
Nailed it
Thx Luke!
Hi from Syracuse NY brother
thanks for non hidden agenda review
Pricy with small handles. I'll keep my spork and eating knife as utensils.
Maybe if it was truly a usable 450ml cup, the cutlery set might have fit in. Agree, not worth the money.
Aye thats why i went for a 750ml mug/pot , they all are using the absolute max volume as the size instead of a safe 50ml space at the top, typical
I thought the soto set was supposed to come next. D:
It might have its place for someone but it looks like junk to me. there's aspects that I do like but I agree with the price assessment. It's just too pricey for a set that I wouldn't use all of. There's more affordable options with better name recognition and return polices based off your needs.
Pass!!!
Like the Soto setup better.
You nailed. Overpriced.
I require more caffeine that dinky lil cup. I'll stick with my shorty 550 Lixada, Kmart Grease pot with aluminum colman messkit lid, and polished bol longhand ti spork of course, for compact capacity and weight there's no better combo
