Vocal booths. What are they? Why do we need them? Today we're going to go over all of that. We'll also go over a vocal booth you can make at home for under a quarter of the price of a professional recording booth.
"You can really hear how quiet it is in here!"
(background music entirely masking the room tone) 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Civil engineer here - I stumbled upon this video as i am looking for ways to make myself a diy booth too and I have one problem with the booth you constructed - make some diagonal pipes as well - if someone clumsy enough bumps into the booth it could easily "fold" itself (as it is not statically stable) and likely get the joints damaged and you will have to redo it. Other than that thanks for some new stuff to keep in mind. Great video ;)
I don't think the size calculator link works anymore. Has it been removed?
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I have an office I record in, where my walls are lined with sponge brinks and on the other side, nothing but books! They work great, but my mic is so good, it pics up on all the chatter all the way in my living room- and that’s with Noise Gate! So, thanks to your video, I am boing to make a sort of crescent booth with roof, so I can be near my desk station and record, cutting out all the extra chatter that I was picking up with my cleaning blankets and crescent booth! You rock!
The sound improvement is impressive.
OMG, her voice. She has that slightly forward vocal tone with a slight high-end boost that I LOVE LOVE LOVE in a female voice. I kinda melted over here
Checked the comments to see if someone else was a fan of the singer haha, she's got a great tone for sure
What are you?
Gay?!
I'm definitely using a closet.
gphillimo Yup; I'm putting up foam inside my closet and the blankets will be on the outside
One of the Best Ideas of SoundProofing is "SoundProof Curtains" it actually Block outside Noise coming from Windows. Check Here: livesoundproof.com/best-soundproof-curtains/
@@laurabrown1971 stfu
how will you do it?
Bs. The closet is fine, deaden it up a bit.
Should've found this much sooner... the difference is REAL!! GREAT WORK
Hey man thank you so much for all the material and knowledge you provide us. You're really doing something here!
I built a vocal booth for myself, using your recommendations, and like it so much. Thanks alot 🙏
Can you link some songs you did using it?
In the video, it says to click on the link below and it will allow me to download the blueprints and calculator. The link takes me to a video on creating a music career. I watched the video - but no blueprints or calculator. How do I download the two items described in the video?
Most problems I am hearing in home studio's is the fact that I can hear rumble a lot of times. Sure, you can cut the low end off, but in a lot of cases it cuts off the body of the voice as well. Also it's not the way you want to encounter the problem, you want to eliminate the low frequency vibrations that came from your neighbors walking or traffic, that traveled thru all the concrete and wood, into the mic stand and the actual walls off your vocal booth. Maybe with budget studio mics it's not that big of a problem but when working with more expensive models it could be. They can be real sensitive and pick up the tiniest vibrations, add some compression to the channel and you can hear your neighbors television, walking around and stuff.
So my suggestion is to start from the bottom. Build a good soundproof floor, it's about the hardest thing to soundproof but most times it's worth the effort. You don't have to do the whole floor, only the part where the booth is standing. There are numerous ways to build a soundproof floor. But I think the prefab tiles are good to start with and make the easiest way to do the job.
Dude you don’t even wanna see the janky ass set up I have. I nailed an acoustic blanket to the ceiling/wall in a semi circle. It’s currently in danger of falling off 😂 TY for the video.
My closet is about the same size as that vocal booth... could I just layer the walls and roof with blankets and get the same effect?
I don't have a walkin closet in my apartment. Just a normal closet and it sounded VERY dry. I put the mic between a bunch of tshirts, put a blanket behind it, and then put up a curtain rod behind me to hang more blankets.
Sounded really dry.
However, the reason I'm here looking for other solutions is that I share my closet wall with my neighbor's bedroom and I don't really want to be singing to them.
Very good and helpful plans. Thank you.
Cost me $66.30 for the PVC frame (no blankets) --> all from Home Depot including the PVC cutters (which were awesome and so easy to use) and the shower rings. Also, I needed 8 of the 10-foot pipes to build the default size in the calculator.. might want to grab 9 in case you make a mistake.
Took me under 2 hours to measure, cut, and build the PVC pipe frame.
Were you able to edit the size calculator and put your own dimensions in? If so, can you tell me how to do it please? Thanks
Sry dude, i just used the defult size. I didn't adjust it.
Is this no longer available, when I download I get a bunch of checklist but nothing on the vocal booth build?
thank you thank you thank you! i'm using this as the start of my soundproof cave :-D
(not a musician - just someone who finds constant noise very stressful & distracting)
I'm confused. At 11:40 you said, "in the first example her vocals were dry and clear" (She was in the untreated room). At 11:47, "In the 2nd one there's a full room reverb surrounding it that you can hear in the background". Don't you have this backwards? The first one has the full room reverb?
can even hear the difference on my apple headset 😂 such an improvement!
But would this keep the sound from inside the booth out? If you live in an apartment for instance
you don't
Great tutorial! I took notes! Ready to rock and record...thank you Dylan!
Have used something like this for a few years now....easy to tear down / transport if needed. My major tip, do NOT use moving blankets if you can. Their tight weave bounces a LOT of high mid / treble back at ya. Those Producers Choice blankets is the way to go IMHO. The BIG difference between mine & this one is mine IS a booth, 4'x4' with a height of 6.5". This means by blankets are double over for even more isolation.
Moving blankets actually work just fine. People use them all the time. The point is not to cut frequencies but deaden the room reflections.
What exactly should I be searching for on Amazon then? I saw some rockwool blankets which were over £100 each!
Good idea, but for about $200 you can get some wood, rockwool, and screws to build a booth that will capture a wider frequency range. I tried the blanket method at first but I noticed the blankets only really helped with higher frequencies. Low frequencies (deep voices) were still coming through the blankets a little. My booth walls were built like so;
Key: r=rockwool (4in), p=plywood, f=acoustic foam (2in), e=empty space (2in), b=burlap fabric
p_e_r_b_f
The empty space helps with those low reflections, the walls are a bit thick but a buddy of mine can play a saxaphone in there and very little noise comes out into the room. I put a bit more work/money into my booth but you could build a very good booth for vocals with just some wood and some rockwool, maybe some screen mesh stapled around it to keep it all together. Anyway still a very good tip/idea, kudos.
voidshadow we think that the point was the portability of the PVC PIPE design, he actually never claimed it to be a perfect solution, just a gateway to a better one. We would do this one because we don't have room for a permanent fixture.
@@mccharleirockohwc9016 yep. Exactly why I'm here looking lol. Need to be able to fold it out the way and hide in my garage til needed
@AwakenFinland so far so good for me. The thicker the blanket the better I would say
Didn't you know rockwool is really bad for your health?
Rockwool can kill you. No joke, look it up.
How about sewing the blankets together and then suspending them from 4 hooks in ceiling. You could strengthen the top one with cardboard or something to stop it folding up on you.
I dont have the space for a large structure so reckon it would work for me 😊
Signed up for the blueprints and the calculator, all I got was a virtual highfive.
Hello! Thank you for the clear breakdown!!! Im not sure I'm seeing the vocal booth blueprints and size calculator in the link you provided. Any assistance with that?
Same
@@jenniferlaynemusic I found the blueprints on google
@@demetriouswhite7997 Thx
I love your videos and your positive attitude. 😍😍 Soooo helpful! I had no idea there were even things called acoustic blankets! So cool!
Blanket booth, I like this!
Is there a dB test outside the box?
Design #1 wasn’t even a design lol
Nice VIdeo! I know it's a 4 years old video, but I didn't find the Blueprints and size calculator in the link in the description... Could you please make it available again?
FYI, even at $5-10k it's still Cheaper to just buy one if you can't diy and plan to hire a carpenter. A basic build with a door, a window, 4 walls, a ceiling and floor covered with sound dampening on inside and outside basic finish like speaker box carpet or paint would likely be 4-6 days 8 hours a day. When you add materials and labor it would be very hard to compete with a company capable of building multiple booths every day. This is one of the most basic simple diy projects I've found.
Thank you so much for putting together this free tutorial, it was a great help and the calculator. Do you have any feedback from people that have booked work with this kind of booth? Thanks for your time.
Interesting! I was prepared to be a bit dismissive, but really good points were brought up. Plus, I'll admit I hadn't thought of using PVC pipes and acoustic blankets in such a way. That's a modular setup you could use for many applications! Just use 2 planes for the back of a drum kit. Use the full set for bass. Use parts for various guitars. Quite genius, really! My only addition would be, if you have no budget and must use a closet, don't sing into the closet, but rather out of it. Then use of the reflection filter(which I would only, but have yet to, and probably won't spend money on used) in front and you have a workable cheap setup. Use eq to accommodate for resonant frequencies in the room. Cheers!
Thanks for your comment. It can be very versatile!
Hi. Sounds like you know what you're talking about. I'm a newbie and don't have much money. Just bought the audio technica usb mic to record vocals as I don't have a sound card etc. Thing is my vocals sound like I'm underwater a bit ...is this because I don't have a vocal booth?
What’s the best shape for a vocal booth design? I see a lot of stating square is the least wise of the choices but not much stating what shape is optimum and why? I’d greatly appreciate if anyone could help me understand.
I have a question,I hope you could help me, I had to change the sizes so the vocal booth could fit in my room... 31" width x 38" length x 80" height are the sizes I used, you think this will affect my voice recording from a good way or a bad way?
What about making a blanket booth inside the walls of a closet. And, what do you do for ventilation?
Wondering this as well
Great idea. We're going to try this, especially since we don't have the space for anything permanent.
It's a great option for situations like that!
MC Charleirock OHWC and we do have a perfect storage utility closet to keep it out of the way.
You can also break down the PVC pieces so that joints are still in position (tape or glue then in place so they don't fall off in storage) and it doesn't turn into a puzzle.
what if my primary concern is not so much getting a professional sound as having some place to sing without the neighbors knockin at my door? are the blankies gonna be as good at soundproofing as the mattress fort or other stuff?
I highly doubt it, your best bet would be scheduling vocal sessions when they're not home or find a practice
Starts at 8:02
Hey, thank you very much for the information and guide! I'm thinking on building a vocal booth myself and it's super helpful!
However I'm accessing your link for the blueprints and size calculator, but the files I downloaded don't have those files. Can you please advise on how I can find them?
Thanks again!
Dude, are you joking? Memory foam mattresses cost about $500+ each. I could buy myself a decent pre-made vocal booth for that amount of money. Unless you assumed that I already have 4 memory foam mattresses, which would imply I have a family, or roommates, that would let me tear up their mattress fro recording vocals.... LOL.
hey!!! super cool video, which blanket do u use exactly cause there are so many choice in the site.
Awesome, gonna build this but with moving blankets as the accoustic foam is too expensive
I have moving blankets and they work GREAT!
I've purchased the materials and am looking forward to my construction. I have one suggestion. The things you refer to as "U" joints are actually "L" joints. I wrote down U-joints but figured it out when I got to Home Depot. Thanks for the great guidance!
Heya! So I know the price was mentioned in the video, but I am in Australia and need confirmation on how much this is. Is the price listed in AUD or USD
Hei. Do you have any idea where i can get those acoustic blankets? Does it work with like moving blankets from amazon?
Go with the Producer's Choice blankets from VocalBoothToGo.com. They'll give you much better results than moving blankets. 👍
The link doesn't work!
Could use the frame of my growtent to put the acoustic blankets on...space is an issue and just harvested so cool LOL
LOL i was thinking the same
Cool idea, I´ll try it out! thanks for the advice
No problem! Good luck!
What is the background music :) ? 12:34
What about dampening the sound. I sing Metal and have some annoying issues with the neighbours.. Will mattresses do the trick?
I really wonder about good substitutes for the blankets mentioned in the video. Does any have an idea? Will “moving blankets” really work for professional home recordings???
Is velvet fabric a good choice, or thick duvets?
I’m building this tonight and I’m using moving blankets! I’ll let you know how it goes!!
@@erickconde1892 how did it go with the moving blankets?
@@mmcb5199 It definitely helps but it’s a pain when it comes to keeping it not 100 degrees inside there lol
@@erickconde1892 hahaha thanks for the quick reply. gonna get this going but read about freq issues with moving blankets so might go with the suggested ones, gonna research some more!
I'm hoping to use your size calculator but I can't seem to get it to work. I get stuck on the survey, unable to submit. Is it down or do I have a problem on my side??
Does this booth help with not annoying the neighbors?
That's my concern too. Did you ever figure out a solution?
@@mike_majora Not really, I`m sticking to my wardrobe and a few blankets...no complaint so far! Haha
@@ViniciusCunha Gotcha. I'd totally be doing the same thing if it wasn't for the unfortunate fact that I don't even have a closet in my bedroom.
The quest continues!
I am stuck at the moment because I've been doing my vocal practice in my apartment, and due to COVID, my neighbour is now working from home. The issue with me "disturbing" her is escalating. I've tried to negotiate practicing at the end of her work day, when she walks her dog, but today, she hadn't left yet, and in a passive aggressive way, she turned her radio way up, right underneath me (kitchens) I don't know what to do. Even this set up is too much, and too expensive!
Finding this video today, 5/2022. Can't find the blueprints and sizing calculator. Could you repost that link?
Great video! I'd love to download the blueprints to make my own booth, but it seems the link is now to recording info. Can you direct me to the blueprints to build a booth? Thank you!
I'm trying to download Blueprint. It does not appear when clicking and downloading all links. Am I missing something/not doing something correctly?
thanks for the video. i stumbled upon it via isovox videos. that is a great idea for some but like many including me we have to use a closet and most like me can retrofit it to be empty and can treat it for budget vocal recording. for years me and so many others have put memory foam in our closets and if we have tile floors put a heavy mat on the floor but there is something a lot of people dont do before recording and thats set your mic and closet with eq and compression gate etc. and i watch a lot of videos like this one and never hear anyone speak on using outboard gear to help their recording in realistic home studio environments. i use art voice channel to set my mic and room and it helps a lot. so if someone only has a closet and cant set the diy booth up how could they get better results?
What is art voice channel? I need to learn to set up the eq etc...do you know a good video for that? 🙏
just found this...would this be good for a practice space in an apartment, to keep from annoying the neighbors, or at least cut down the noise? I am a trumpet player by the way.
Love the video . . . thanks ! Now, where do i buy the curtains from please ?
Soundproofing blankets are the best
I have built a PVC pipe vocal booth with the Producer's Choice Blankets. Works like a charm!
Is there a minimum for the dimensions? Height's not an issue but what if I don't have a lot of walking room like how square the one in the video is and it's more like a phone booth?
1000 for a professional vocal booth? I’ll take it. Vocal booths are at least 2500 used from what I’ve seen.
What if you were to use acoustic blankets with shower hangers and tension rods in the closet? Would that nullify the 'tiny room sound' issue?
I have a four post canopy bed. Matress on the bottom. Add blankets. :D
I downloaded the bundle but couldn't find the plans for the booth.
The blueprint is confusing. Where do you put pipe I? According to the blueprint thee should be 5 pipe I's(that are the longest) but on the blueprint, pipe I's are short than almost all of the pipes
the blue print was the left and right side. pipe I goes into the T joints and joins them together in the back and the top leaving one side open as a doorway. I agree it was a bit confusing though.
Link just tries to sign me up for a Music Masterclass! No mention of Vocal Booth plans/size calculators anywhere. :(
Thank you for your video! I was wondering... How is it not dark in your booth? Where is the light coming from that lights up your booth?
I know this video was posted 5 years ago, but I hope that you will reply. I cannot locate the size calculator in the cheat sheet bundle and I don't see it located anywhere in the description. Can you help? Thanks!
the blankets I'm looking at don't have those holes to hang them up because I'm using moving blankets instead of ones made specifically for this since I'm not even close to being able to afford the specialized ones. And while this brand I'm looking at has better reviews for this specific purpose than the other moving blankets I looked at due to the fact they're thicker, I feel like I'm going to run into problems hanging them. Is there any way to do this setup with blankets with no holes? or could you refer me to another brand of good quality moving blankets that will still be thick enough for this purpose that do come with holes? Sorry if you said something about this in the video I was watching with my sound down just to get an idea of how to actually put this together.
THIS WAS AN AWESOME VIDEO THAT'S SURE TO SAVE ME MEGABUCKS! For some reason, when I attempt to download the size calculator using the link above, it sends me back to the PDF download page. Is it possible for you to send that calculator, along with the blueprints for the booth #4?( I only have the booth #4 PDF, and not the actual blueprints) Can you send that also? Thanks!
Thanks mate, looks quite ace!! I'm thinking of building one as I moved into a new flat and wanna practice my singing (which is still very beginner's stage, so I don't want to disturb my neighbours and have a rough time letting go into practice). Will it block noise from coming out significantly? Like is it worth building this as a little practice room? Would appreciate your feedback
This vocal booth is meant to absorb reflections (reverb)
Would this make it quieter to practice classical singing with neighbors?
What if i use acoustic blankets in the closet? Is it gonna work? Cause i dont have extra room to do this.
it could be more difficult to set up, but if you manage to do it, then yes.
I’m in the same boat. How did it work out for you?
I could not find the pvc calculator, can you put a link?
Where do you get these blankets??? The ones i saw online are 2x4 and cost 150.00 each.
i think maybe here. www.vocalboothtogo.com/product-category/acoustic-sound-blankets-sound-absorption-panels-producers-choice/
Dylan here - I used the ones from VocalBoothToGo. They're about $40 each. Here's the link: www.vocalboothtogo.com/product/sound-blanket-producers-choice-with-grommets-black-and-white/
Curious if it’s possible to expand this design to make it more sound isolating? Eg if you just tripled the amount of blankets presumably that would help? And maybe put something in between each layer of blankets? And then something on the floor too? Any suggestions to use the same design but increase the sound isolation?
I’m moving into a unit and going to be running a studio out of there but it’s noisy so I need the most sound protection possible on a budget. I’m not bothered about total sound isolation but as much as I can get without going over say $1000
Hey Julius, did you ever figure out a solution? The biggest reason I'm looking to get a vocal booth is that I need to be able to practice singing in my apartment bedroom without disturbing my roommate or my neighbors.

What if I cover all the inner walls of the closet with acoustic panels?
I cant find the size calculator in the zip file. Where is it?
I'm making a version of the PVC pipe booth. What do I record to when I get it done? Should I keep a laptop outside of the booth? Or, should I use a digital recorder mounted to the mic stand? Are there any cheaper digital recorders that accept XLR that would work for me as a beginner? Or, how about those cheap ones ($20 - $40) which accept a 1/4" or 1/8" jack? Would they work?
I'm using a Zoom H4N Pro. XLR inputs and great preamps. Make sure you get the remote control with it to keep the handling noise out of your recordings when setting your levels.
@@willtv2003 That's actually good advice, but I already went ahead and got the Philips DVT7500, no remote. I have to edit out the pops of every time I press the pause recording. I did get a good quality used XLR mic, though.
The size calculator is not editable. Can someone please help me on how to edit the pdf. I made a copy and still unable to edit the pdf.
Nice video content 👌
What and where is the size calculator?
Why is there no blueprints or calculator coming? I entered my email several times. No, it didn't go a spam folder. I select what goes to it, as I never let it just do it itself.

i didnt get the blueprint nor the calculator... can someone pls help me ?

It sounds like this is something you can take down and put back up. I'm wondering how long this takes to put up once you have all the pipes cut?
I love it !
Were you able to edit the size calculator and put your own dimensions in? If so, can you tell me how to do it please? Thanks
