- Duke NUS Scientists Discover Protein That Causes Aging
A research team lead by Anissa A. Widjaja recently published in Nature that inhibiting interleukin-11 extends lifespan by nearly 25% in 75 weeks old mice (55 years of human equivalent age.) Team has discovered the age causing protein. Of course there are more proteins and mechanisms that contribute to aging, however, inflammation is central part of these processes. IL-11 with age start increasing in amount contributing to visceral fat accumulation, muscle wasting, and metabolic irregularities. Let's review the study together.

I've seen publications suggesting that EPA and DHA inhibits IL-11 pathways and extends lifespan. I've heard dolphin researchers suggest that that C15 saturated fatty acid can also increase lifespan through other pathways. Can you discuss these ideas?
Makes sense why so many studies show dairy consumption positively associated with longevity since C15 is most commonly/highly found in dairy fat :)
I'm a bit cautious about this C15, as the main supporters are selling the products..
Omega3 is likely as good..
@@MartoDriftz Look into goat and sheep dairy. I avoid cow milk products generally. Goat gouda, for example, is high in K2, taurine, and low in fatty acids other than 15. But see what's at NIH, in studies like those Dr. Been cites.
Interesting. I think there was a study in the last few years that showed an extension of lifespan for Omega-3s. This paper on Il-11 offers a plausible mechanism for the benefit shown with Omega-3.

Excellent discussion of Inflammation!! Thank you!
I'm going to increase my sardine intake. Luckily they're one of my favorite foods, and low on the food chain.
Be aware that sardines contain trace amounts of arsenic. (And since they're wild-caught marine fish, they may also contain trace amounts of mercury.) Joe Rogan mentioned this recently, and he eats sardines a lot, and his doctor found borderline-unsafe levels of arsenic in his blood work.
They recommend that you not eat sardines more than 3 or 4 times per week. So... enjoy, but in moderation. ;-)
Increase your whole plant products. Studies for decades have shown that is what will decrease your inflamation and keep you young. I'm the only person I know in my 60s who is not on any meds and has more energy than a 30 year old.

associated with immune and inflammatory responses - - - Two of these genes were also modulated in
response to ozone exposure, namely IL12B and IL11."
"For the ozone exposure, both the IL12B and IL11 had increased expression."
Does this not mean; air pollution is increasing the process of ageing -> inhibiting IL11 reduces the effect of air pollution on ageing?
Yes absolutely
Being a beginner in understanding the cellular pathways i am quite curious to know how the il-11 pathway is related to ros generation as it is known reactive oxygen species results in ageing and how antioxidants and il-11 inhibitors can work together to make humans more healthy.
I will discuss. In the meantime keep an eye on the inflammation course on DrBeen.com. I will be uploading the recording of the 8 most potent inflammatory pathways.
I came to this site because there is a RUclipsr promoting a series of supplements as IL-11 inhibitors. I can’t find any credentials on him. Just wanted to hear the info explained by someone who knows what they are talking about. Thank you.
How very interesting, thank you for presenting this study to us all. 🙏
My pleasure!
So how do I go about inhibiting my IL-11?
How much omega 3 to suppress IL 11? Do we know if more EPA or DHA is the most active? Is there anything bad about suppressing IL 11?
What is the relationship of IL-11. with fasting, insulin, carbohydrates, ketones?
So, how much Omega-3 should we be taking approximately to inhibit aging potentially?
How much fish do you recommend to eat
IL-11 increases with estrogen deficiency and estrogen decreases in males and females. Non-feminizing estrogen helps males with many diseases including heart disease and estradiol in menopausal and postmenopausal women helps significantly to decrease heart disease, bone loss, colon and breast cancer and women and men have a longer lifespan.
Interesting points. Thank you!
Pardon, I mean no disrespect but that was phrased horribly.
How about instead saying:
IL-11 is inhibited by increasing non feminizing estrogen.

Does Low Dose Naltrexone have any effects on IL-11?
I will have to find studies about it.
You cannot ignore mitochondrial biogenesis in any of these conversations. Single cytokine targeting is complex, the immune system responses are unpredictable, and the question is what is driving the induction of IL-11.
Sounds similar to taurine study 😊
It does.
So Taurine interferes with IL-11🧐 just joking
Can you elaborate I don't know that one?

Is the inverse of this also true, ie does omega 6 in the form of pufa, become an il 11 promoting agent ?.
Not sure.

I wonder if there is a link between il-11 and metformin.
Apparently an odd chain fatty acid such as C15 best omega 3 significantly
Hello - please can explain more here on c15? Do u mean c15 boost omega 3 in the blood? So if say take 1 1000mg capsule or epa/dha the amount in blood will increase if taking c15? Or do mean c15 is an omega 3 fat? Which is best then c15 or epa/dha?

Just search c15 on RUclips and you will see what I mean. A fairly recent discovery with massive benefits. I think in very short order it will be a number 1 supplement. Cheers
NAC is used for Acetemeniphen OD so I wonder if it might reduce interlukin 11?
Thanks again.
Why does the body produce IL-11 -- surely there must be an evolutionary reason why it's made in these circumstances in the first place. Stated another way -- what are the downsides of inhibiting IL-11 at this stage of life?
That may only be found out in human trials. But nature would maybe have a benefit for killing off generations faster. The older a species is, the slower they evolve after all. Although that's not really tru for 25%, and adulthood would stay the same unless you edited the gene out in vitro.
That's a good question though, but honestly if there are minimal side effects sounds like a good deal. The only other thing I can think of is that inflammation can help with fighting infection, but that might be a different kind or less severe. I wonder about il 11's effects on other effects of aging, though. Like, are there or were there conditions it helps with.
I have noticed that people turn gray in old age. According to your logic, if you cut them every day, then they should live longer than hairy ones. Or maybe it is still better to look for the cause of inflammation and fight it?
What? How does the logic follow?
I would love to see the results of improving your gut biome by eating all the right fermented foods and fasting and eating like a walking and emigrating frugivore would have on these interlukin 11 levels...
I'd love to see the results with _all_ the diets people love. (And of course diets over the course of a life, and for which bodies, is important also)

IL-11 is a component of SASP. So increased levels of IL-11 in old age might be connected to senescent cell proliferation (or the converse, as well).
"Cytokines are key components of SASP, contributing to inflammation and immune modulation. Notable cytokines include:
Interleukins: IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-11, and IL-12
Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)
Interferons
Among these, IL-6 and IL-8 are particularly well-conserved and robust features of SASP, while IL-11 is recognized for its pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic roles."
Yes, and they say what they used to block il11 but didn't give a dosage.
That is because it is for mice and not humans. Plus, it should be in their study method section.
How do they delete the gene?
With gene editing probably but I'm interested if there are mrna gene therapy solutions to this
This information is very interesting! It is good that you provide some suggestion about what natural approach to inhibit IL-11 progression. That is Omega 3. The issue is that omega 3 is a family of various fatty acids; ALA, EPA and DHA, just to mention some. It would be an excellent addition to clarify the type of omega 3 most effective. Don’t you think?
Thank you. I have done detailed discussion about EPA and DHA earlier.
@@DrBeenMedicalLectures Thank you for taking the time to replay to my comment. The study on the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR MEDICINE is entitled “Omega‑3 polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit IL‑11…” Again, my question in relation to this study remains. I don’t think, looking at that paper, that there is a specific answer. If someone wants to inhibit IL-11, Should consume vegetables containing ALA (omega3)? Or should the person take flax oil (high in ALA omega 3)? Or should consume fatty fish? Or should take a supplement of EPA or DHA or a combination of both? They all are omega 3 PUFA’s.
I Tego Arcana Dei... Dear Lord, what this can imply if replicated
Looking at one protein in isolation and coupling correlation with causation with respect to ageing is quite meaningless.
The second law of thermodynamics has never been violated.
Well they extended mice's lifespan by 25% which is a big deal. One wouldn't say it's meaningless.
@@trianglesandsquares420 What other characteristics were altered due to to this 25% increase in life span?
Is it clear that there aren't any other detrimental side effects?
Indoor mice typically live for about 2 years.
So you are saying that the mice extend their lifespan by 6 months?
WE cant translate this directly to say a human that may have lived to 80 years and claim that they will extend their life by a further 40 years, allowing them to live until 120.
Biological system are extremely complex.
The reductionist model that many scientists use is often unproductive, leads to ignorance and in some cases catastrophic outcomes.
@@PetraKann That's true and I'm against the reductionist model also. But whether it's 6 months or 25% is yet to be determined. In either case, isolating this particular protein made a huge difference for the lifespan and apparent health of those mice.
@@trianglesandsquares420 In mice only.
Imagine you get a 25% increase in a human lifespan by manipulating this particular protein formed in the body, but there is a 3% increase in the risk of cancer or a 13% increase in depression or a 21% decrease cognitive abilities or intelligence/problem solving?
Scientists often lose sight of the ramifications of their research - and this has become worse in recent decades with the dominance of the Corporate model of short term profits.
The corruption of the quest for knowledge is very evident today. The Pandemic showed us how the scientific method itself can be politicised and corrupted.
