Lets be honest....this guy could make a tissue box and a bunch of elastic bands sound great!
On that note, The other day I pulled the $50.00 guitar out. played around on it for awhile. My wife came in the room she thought I was playing the high dollar Martin. The thing is chip guitars are hard to play. But they can sound good. I would not recommend chip guitars to learn on. I have 3. They wont stay in tune have crappy tunners. frets are all over the place.

The skill of the player makes the biggest difference in the sound
Not that much of a problem really, if you sound terrible on a cheap guitar, you're gonna sound terrible on an expensive one too :D
To me, it's more helpful when the player is playing the exact same thing, back to back, with each guitar. Even then sometimes you suspect that a little more love is added to each demo as the sticker price increases. Tougher to gauge in this format.
Most guitars these days are perfectly serviceable. Almost all musicians are playing of instruments which are far better than they are.

Compared to when I was in high school in the 80s and before, almost all cars today should be considered good cars. Then, in order to provide a range, reviewers find things to nitpick about. There is one channel that will actually tell you that a late model Nissan Altima is a horrible choice because after 250,000 miles a gasket is known to give out. I just pray that every car I buy goes 250,000 miles. To hell with whether I have to eventually replace that piece of cardboard! 🤣
I just love how obviously the leap was between Eastcoast and Alvarez. Eastcoast sounded like a single thread instrument, like it can only do one thing at a time. With Alvarez, you can feel there're several departments in it, treble, middle, bass, all do their own thing and come together effortlessly, whereas in Eastcoast it will just be all muffled together
I love watching and listening to Ben play. The sound and tone is so good and he is totally committed to playing as shown in his body language. Good job, Ben! I prefer the smaller concert and OM/OOO sized instruments myself.
I really enjoyed your wonderful playing, both strumming and finger picking. I have a Martin D35 and a Martin Dreadnaught Junior and I enjoy all Martin guitars.
Having played guitar for over 45 years I find what separates a high end guitar from a low end one is all in the chords. Almost any low end guitar will sound pretty good when picking, but fall apart as soon as you strum a chord. Having said that the Alvarez sounds pretty sweet for the money!
Yes its worth it. You will never regret owning a Martin standard series. They are that good.
If a guy that plays like you is so enthusiastic about a cheap guitar, that’s really helpful for beginners. Great that they make a pretty decent guitar for so cheap these days...my first, second and third guitar were dogs but I loved them anyway. And they helped with toughening up my fingers. Bought an Eastman E8-OM last year and used the lockdowns for some practice.

The less expensive guitars sounded
great until he played the Martins.
They still sound good, it the 00015 is great and the OM-28 is spectacular.
Excellent video. Viewing here in Arizona, I’m not familiar with the East coast brand. But it has similar value to an Eastman economy guitar I own. I’ve also played the Alvarez and it is excellent. I own a Martin 00015sm and it has a “soothing” sound to my hear. I owned a Martin 00018 and 00028 ( I should never have sold them!!). They were each fantastic in their own way.
But as been says, sometimes you just want that simple sound a cheaper guitar gives you.

For something in price between the Alvarez and the Martin 000-15, check out the various Eastman OM models. I have an Eastman E6OM, it's all solid and has great volume for a mid-sized guitar. For alternatives to Martin the Furch Vintage series are definitely worth a look.
I have a 1955 tenor version of the mahogany Martin. It's in nearly mint condition too. Amazing tone and sustain.
I prefer the mid sized acoustics as well. I recently got a Taylor 322ce Grand Concert and absolutely love it! It lives in D standard and has a rich tone similar to the mahogany Martin. I was surprised how good the East Coast sounded also
Right? I don't know the east coast brand at all, so I actually assumed it might be a higher end guitar from the sound. Very impressive actually.

Thanks for the great demo! To me it goes to show that when played by an expert player you get to hear more of the range of the guitars. That also shows me that you don't need to spend a fortune for a quality guitar. In terms of sound and build quality I would be hard pressed to go anywhere higher in price than the Alvarez! It's amazing considering the cost and then some! At the end it comes down to the experience of the player and if he prefers how one guitar plays over the other, or if he's more "moved" by one instrument.

For my 75th birthday a couple years ago, I had Pimentel & Sons Guitars of Albuquerque New Mexico make a custom classical guitar for $6500. I won't take it anywhere and just play it at home for myself, family and friends. It sounds vastly better than the $1500 Cordoba that I take out even played through my Hendriksen amp. The pleasure I get from it is worth every penny I paid. An audience wouldn't recognize the difference, so why risk taking it out. It was also worth selling my Santa Cruz dred and DeNeve resonator to pay for it. My personal pleasure is more valuable to me than showing off a treasure to an audience.
It's hard to believe that the Alvarez is so inexpensive. Sounds so good.

Id say once you get to a certain point where you get a proper build, good materials and setup, and it feels right for you then the rest is mainly ornamental and tone variances. That said, i like nice wood, inlays etc and would definitely pay a premium price for them.
Would like if he did a blind test so we don't know which is which. My brain gravitates towards the highest priced. Also playing the exact same thing on all guitars would also be nice along with back to back chord strumming cutting straight to the other guitar to get a true comparison.
Nice demo overall! They all sound good in their territory.
However I'm sometimes slightly repeled by the kind of compression the mic goes in; it must be the attack/release settings of it really because I usually love what it does, compression! :)

I got back into playing again when my teenage son took it up. My old Blueridge accoustic had been standing in the corner for years...untouched. so I put new strings on and after a few hours playing I'm pretty sure it sounds better now than it did before. I think it's true that a solid wood accoustic will improve over time.
As for woods...i think mahogany is nice for back and sides ...but not for the top. I played that martin 00015 in a store and it didn't impress me much. Looks lovely...but spruce tops do sound better imo...mind you, i dont sound like ben!
I have an Alvarez Delta 00/TSB and it’s lovely to play.
Acoustics in my experience gain more character over the years, I have a beat up old takamine that nobody would give me more than 100$ for, But I haven't found many that play and even kinda sound quite like that old beater
So true, my 1986 Takamine EC132 SC sounds so much better than any of the new ones available. I can't truly find a replacement for it.. that I can afford, south of 2 grands. I remember breaking my bank when I bought it. The best investment I ever made with my 83' 57' reissue Strat
I admit I'm more of an electric guy as probably most of us that watch this channel are..... but that was some really stellar playing and fantastic analysis.
Cheaper guitars got so much better these days, I remember my first second hand dreadnought guitar where you could slide a pencil under the strings at the 14th fret! It really did put you off playing. Now I have a Faith Mercury Classic Burst and its such a pleasure to play, it invites you.
I actually liked the East Coast and the natural "compression" ... I could see that as a run around and picnic guitar. They are all nice. If I didn't have a dozen or so decent guitars, I might be looking at the Martin mahogany 00015. I do not have a mahogany topped steel string. And, I recorded that intro. Stellar piece of work there
I have a 000-15m and absolutely love it. I don't have a huge point of reference as I have only played a handful of other Martin's but this will be a forever guitar, even if I end up with a "nicer" Martin.
I bought that Alvarez three years ago. I've played it against a 000-18 ( mahogany and spruce. The 000-28 here is rosewood so not like for like ) Tonally it is very close, not quite as loud, but then it costs under £500 with a case, currently around £2,500 less than a 000-18. That's a huge jump for not a whole lot extra.

Was given sound (haha) advice years ago by a professional muso, which was, to buy the guitar you like and can afford and then spend time and whatever money you have on learning how to play it. Ben is a classic example of that...if you can play well you can make anything sound good.
Yes, they are, but it depends. You will never regret buying a Martin D-28, and it just keeps getting better. The sound is in the wood and the scale of the instrument.
The OM is my dream acoustic. Incredible.
A couple months back I traded in my dreadnought for a Martin 00012E Koa and my good lord the difference is amazing for me in terms of playability. So much more comfortable to sit with as it's narrower body means it's not such a big reach. Plus the built-in tuner is a delight!
I also got in there just before the big Martin price-hike so it was cheaper than it would be today 😜
Interestingly the 000-15m does in fact have the same scale length as the OM-28, being 25.4". The 000-17 and 000-28 have the shorter 24.9" which I would have expected the 15 to have. That said, there was period shortly before the OM was released (1924-1934 apparently) when 000s had 25.4" scale length. When the OM launched, the 000 went back to 24.9". It's not a strict rule that Martin has followed but body shapes have always been exactly the same as far as I'm aware.
I play flamenco, classical, guitars and hybrid lute/guitars. The difference in tonal quality between cheap instruments and top quality luthier made instruments is very clear to me and differences between tonewoods, particularly spruce and cedar soundboards and construction such as lattice and fan bracing is clearly apparent to me. Now I know most of the audience can't tell the difference between one tune and another, let alone whether the instrument is in tune but most steel strung acoustics sound the same to me and I have played cheap plywood ones which were a greater pleasure to play than an expensive luthier built one. Maybe it's just me but there you go. Incidentally I do repair and restore violins and other instruments and can tell the difference between my 100 year old Rudall Carte flute and a cheap metal flute or my 1826 Gaetano Guadagnini guitar or a Greg Smallman and cheaper instruments so I do think I know what I'm talking about.
Ultimately it all comes down to perception and a great player can make a crap instrument sound great but if you have a good instrument it is certainly going to help anyone become a better player than one with an action like a crossbow.
I didn't believe it until I bought a master built guitar. What a difference. Money well spent.

The difference I heard between the two lower ends ones was a much tighter bass, especially the low E string. On the East Coast, it sounded floppy, buzzy, and it distracted from the music rather than add to it. It might just be the setup, or the power you were putting into it. Personally, I like the harmonics, richness, and the clarity of the Martin OM-28, but I like the Alvarez over the other two. If I had unlimited funds, the OM-28, and then I would not want to bring it anywhere it could get damaged accidentally. If I wanted to take it places, if I wanted to play by a campfire, or if I wanted to entertain a bunch of friends/family at a party...I would bring the Alvarez over the Martin OM-28 every single time. OM-28 Great studio or guitar in the home (with no kids or the kids gone), the Alvarez for any other situation.
You can argue "is it worth it?", but there is definitely an objectively identifiable balanced-across-frequency-range and smooth sound associated with expensive acoustics.

All sound good! Here is the thing; the OM has the missing thing the others lack. The KNOCK! The great iconic Martins have it. That comes with a price!

Try Furch Red masters choice You`ll get the equivalent of a custom shop £6000 plus guitar from Martin or Taylor with magnificent craftsmanship , top quality tone woods and electronics but at the same price as the OM28 here
I was introduced to them by someone from Poland who had one of their mid-range series and I couldn`t believe the sound , quality and just feel for a price so much lower than a Martin or Taylor equivalent
And read the great historical story of how this company developed from one mans secret garage workshop during the cold war in Czechoslavakia where private enterprises were illegal
Take advantage of this incredible value now because Furch are currently where Taylor was 50 years ago They just aren`t well known yet in the big markets but the only thing separating them from the big 2 is the name , not the quality and craftmanship
Very nice playing. It takes a great player with a good touch to hear the subtle differences when comparing guitars. The Martins, of course are going to have an audible difference in tone quality, and you will pay for it. The Alvarez is an excellent choice for most amateur players or beginners because it is a good value. It is not a chore to play and has decent tone, and construction. It will also be a great back up guitar when you decide to upgrade to a Martin or Gibson or Taylor. The Alvarez will still be a great guitar to play around the campfire when you don't want to risk your expensive guitar in that kind of environment.

000-15m are so good. So comfortable to play due to a slightly thinner body and the sound is very clear. Larger body guitars I find are a bit more bassy and to my ears that sound isn't as crisp/clear.
As a owner you will not regret it! One of my most loved guitars!
That 000-15M is stunning both in tone and has the looks! The OM is brighter and doesn't have that mahogany chime for way more $$ IMO.

I have a Yamaha CPX 1000 and it sound fantastic! So I would say that an acoustic at the 1000 GBP will sound more than good enough for most/almost all players....

Try a godin Fairmount natural , spruce mahogany . About 1400 pound sterling . utterly amazing . Got mine from a guy with two martins , played them , took the godin.
The whole Martin 15 series are “lifer” guitars really. They all have that low end bark that makes you want to strum forever.

never heard of Alvarez before (not really an acoustic player) but I might just have to get my hands on one, I've been looking for a nice acoustic and just going all out on a Hummingbird probably isn't the best of ideas (especially since I've prefered the smaller OM/GA guitars more so than the big boi dreadnoughts)
Bought a Martin junior 000 it cost me over 1k Aus, a lot for me. I was chasing the headstock, nothing but trouble a needs a neck reset. So no I'd say it's not all about the prestige

To me the Martin guitars sound phenomenal but Theres also more affordable options that are almost as nice. They have to be all solid wood though. I like the thought of them getting better everytime i play.

I just purchased a Taylor GT Black Top because at some point all you are paying for is bling. The GT is an amazing guitar full stop.
Running through a mic changes everything. The EC sounded tinny, but honestly, it really fit what you were playing, maybe more than all the others. IMO. Takeaway, you gotta play stuff and be in the room...

Nice video, but my gripe with cheap acoustics is that they are essentially disposable instruments. A decent set up will cost half their value. Let alone any repair work. Plus the secondhand market is flooded with them. And we've felled a 300 year old spruce to make them...
Btw, andertons, your starting to slip when it comes to knowing the products. I've noticed a lotlately (the past year) that there's a lot of guesses made on specs of stuff your playing. Alot of "I'm not quite sure on that spec, why dont you find out for yourself" and I think you guys knowing the stuff adds more value, helps decisions being made, sells more instruments, and just makes you guys look more pro. I know with Lee and Pete, it seems these days that if it's not rosewood or maple or mahogany they're kinda like "yea it could be popular or basswood or I dunno" and than even a lot of times on your site it won't clarify certain things either. There's a lot of new materials coming into guitar making. Guess ya gotta learn this stuff sometimes,no?
I would think the point of this is to drive traffic to the site where you can enquire or buy. Marketing etc.
I used to buy 'cheaper' guitars because i couldn't justify the money for the better Martin guitars. Unfortunatley i kept looking for new guitars... One day a friend of mine started playing cello and she spent 4k without the ability of hitting a single note. After that i said 'f*** it' and bought a Martin OM-28. Best. Choice. Ever. My GAS is healed. That being said i also own one of the cheapest Harley Benton guitars for travelling and sometimes i really enjoy playing it BECAUSE it has that thinner and boxy sound.
It's obvious that playing these guitars make Ben very happy 🎉

ive owned gibson acoustic for decades, j200 and hummingbird and dove. I've played many old.Martins, the Gibson's just seem to give more, they look better, the fretboards feel better, and I think sound better. I still haven't found that Martin with my name on it, I know it's out there..I'd love to find one that compares to.my Gibson's.
I'm torn between the Alvarez MF60OM and the dreadnought MD70BG? Has anyone had the chance to try both? I love a bit of strumming but would I'm only a novice and hope to learn some fingerpicking and flatpicking in the future. Just want a great all around guitar.
I played them both and also the MD60BG (mahogany). I ruled out the MD70BG (rosewood) as it cost quite a lot more and didn't sound better than the MD60BG to me on a quick listen. It's all personal preference, but I bought the MF60OM (mahogany) - it's cheaper, looks better, and has a shorter scale so is easier to play. It's cuter, more pick-up-able and more comfortable! I just preferred it. Nice warm, clear sound. The MD70BG and MD60BG are bigger, louder, bassier. The MF60OM sounds good strumming, just you won't get the full giant sound of a dreadnought and the MF may sound slightly boxy in direct comparison to the MDs. I tried the MD60BG for 2 months, then returned it because I preferred the MF60OM. You can't go wrong with any of them. If you love playing big chords then maybe the MDs win out over the MF. You can do it all with any of those guitars: strumming or picking. Ben, the guy in the video owns a MD70BG, so it has his vote, and there is another Andertons video with Chris Buck playing an MD60BG, and the JP Cormier videos likening the MD60 to a Martin D28. I tried about 20 guitars in the £400 to £700 range before I settled on the MF60OM and got it for £380 on black friday last November - insane value at that price. The only guitar that I tried that noticeably blew it away was a Martin 000-28, but that was £3,800!!! In summary - try them out if you can as it is very subjective. If not, maybe go for the cheapest one, or one that takes your fancy the most!

Interesting.....I'm not sure it would have helped me decide what guitar to buy. Surely guitars are a bit like cars or any other product. It all rather depends on what you are intending to do....play in your home for your own amusement, give a recital to respectful audiences, gig in restaurants and noisy pubs, play in a little folk club with no amplification. What are the implications in choosing a concert size as opposed to a dreadnought, or a parlour. If you give them love and lavish attention - all guitars are beautiful, like people in fact.
This man looks like Guthrie Govan got featured in Extreme Makeover: Guitarist Edition and they tidied him up. Great playing regardless
The truth is at the cheap end, the quality had been gradually going up. At the highish end, quality gains are incremental and subtle, while a lot of time goes into the finish and ornamentation.
It would be interesting to hear them all again with the mic capsule pointed at the twelveth fret,so as not to enhance the bass so much........................................................

Ive got an alverez dreadnaught elite series i think i bought second hand for £300 and my word i have never played of felt such a high quality acoustic for such a good price

The Alvarez compared nicely with them all, But the last Martin (spruce top) definitely sounded best, the Alvarez a close second choice 😮😮😮😊😊
Fender accoustic guitars are normally great value since they are good instruments, but are often marked down since people don't buy them 😅
