Thanks for the comparison. After careful review, I feel that the vintage martin has a mid scoop and the new D28 is more balanced tonally. Like when you get a high quality acoustic electric and u lower the midst ... that's what I feel the vintage sounds like. The new one is non-scalloped braced which I thin is intended to make a more balanced tone. I think the vintage is scalloped which I believe resemble the HD28. Both great guitars, slightly different sounds. Love my D28!
I can only imagine how beautiful that Martin sounds live. You know a guitar sounds good when another great sounding guitar sounds like 200 bucks acoustic in comparison. Crazy.
The 2019 sounds so thin compared to the 1942 one. I wonder why. You say something like the age of the 1942 model has somehow 'ripened', like wine. What do you think, will the 2019 get the same sound 80 years from now or is Martin simply not able to create a sound like that right now. Groetjes.
@Iliya Yanev I just read somewhere that somewhere in the late 60's, because of high demand Martin changed their way of drying the wood from air-dried to kiln-dried. That could be the reason why the 2019 model sounds different. But in that case the quality of the 2019 will never improve in such a way that it will sound like the 1942 model. Which would be a shame because the 1942 model sounds so much better.
@@willemvandijk8860 It sounds thin primarily because it's been a guitar for less than 2 months. It hasn't settled, and it hasn't been played. Hey Paul, your videos always amaze me, everything from musical theory, practice, riffs to the the analysis of various guitars and more. Always enjoyable. Thanks.
What I worked out a long time ago is, if you want a vintage guitar, especially acoustic, you better factor in ‘total cost of ownership’. It will need the absolute right environmental humidity and temp-wise all the the time. It will need you to have a good knowledge of guitar adjusting, like proper luthier knowledge, or conversely the services of a top luthier to keep it on check. And unless you have a wildly popular RUclips channel or are a serious performer, very few people will ever care when you’re playing it and you’ll be nervous any time the thing is sitting in a stand on stage and you aren’t up there. This is why I favor the modern custom shop guitars that are manually road worn.
He did a video about it I think it's called something like how to make your riff sound good. It's from a couple of months ago! He wrote it and played it first on his instagram account I think ! Hope it helped, check his channel you'll find it !
I bought one new acoustic in my life. I’ve bought over 20 vintage plus 40 years old ones. Never heard a new guitar that sounds really good. The Wood needs to dry, age and the guitar needs to be played.
This is like opening a hundred year old classic wine and having a taste of it...after listening to that George Harrison "Here Comes the Sun" tune, I'm all sold...!!!
The more I learn/ hear Martin guitars the more I’m convinced I should get one, I thought Taylor would be my next one, but Martin is calling my name. Thank you Paul for pointing me in the right direction. (That’s a good thing I have two healthy kidneys)...
Maybe I imagined it and I had no idea which was which but my senses spotted the richness and depth of tone on the second guitar, as immediately as Paul.
Thing i noticed changes sound quality are strings. Who would know my antique 7 years old strings sound so bad, but since they are antique anyone wants to buy them? Starting at 10k $
The tone of the guitar so good that it made me say wow! when Paul touched the string, even though the sound was coming from my 40 dollar crappy speakers.

The vintage one sounds so much richer, with way more low end in particular. Gorgeous thing.
What's the song called that he's playing around 3:00? Thanx
Good question
@@carlosir1126 I think it's Wolves by Selena Gomez, not sure tho
Go check his channel it's a song he wrote if I remember correctly.
The video is about making riffs sound good I think
Douloureux d'entendre la 2019 après la vintage !
2:35
What’s this beautiful song ?
No..
He did a video about it I think it's called something like how to make your riff sound good. It's from a couple of months ago! He wrote it and played it first on his instagram account I think !
Hope it helped, check his channel you'll find it !
Wolves - selena gomez
Vixo Yes ! Thank you so much
La belette Norris its a noodle
Here Comes The Sun is one of my favorite songs. Sounds even better on a '42 Martin.
2:35 Can someone please tell me what Paul is playing here if he's just making this up or what song it is, really cool riff. Thanks!
I think this is the opening part of Wolves by Selena Gomez
I bought one new acoustic in my life. I’ve bought over 20 vintage plus 40 years old ones. Never heard a new guitar that sounds really good. The Wood needs to dry, age and the guitar needs to be played.
That’s a pretty cool blind test!! Great Video! Love your work. Keep on going!😀👍🏼
you bind and
deaf.
you do not hear gluing?!
gtxjhcrbq sure ;) Although I like the video...
This is like opening a hundred year old classic wine and having a taste of it...after listening to that George Harrison "Here Comes the Sun" tune, I'm all sold...!!!
Its funny how the 42 made the 2019 sound bad, like I literally cant enjoy the 2019 one anymore after listening to the 42 one.
The more I learn/ hear Martin guitars the more I’m convinced I should get one, I thought Taylor would be my next one, but Martin is calling my name.
Thank you Paul for pointing me in the right direction.
(That’s a good thing I have two healthy kidneys)...
what song are you playing at 4:30
That is "Nobody loves you when you're down and out" , written by Jimmy Cox. I know it from the Eric Clapton MTV unplugged album.
Maybe I imagined it and I had no idea which was which but my senses spotted the richness and depth of tone on the second guitar, as immediately as Paul.
i'm not a music person at all, and even I could tell the difference between the sound of both..
The 42 is Like an Angel's harp. So much projection and depth.
3:29 song name?
Fläsk balle Here comes the sun - Beatles
@@RC-vn5vo thanks
You’re welcome my guy
really i felt the same as soon as you strum on it. i knew its the vintage one. so bright and bassy and clear and loud.
Both as beautiful as Paul's beard. Both outside of my price range as well (just like Paul's beard).
if you listen to a beard, then yes ..
Just wait. In 75 years, your Martin will sound just as beautiful. ;-p
It won't though... the construction is way different. Now the Authentic series will get close...
I love this arrangement of down and out. I’m watching over and over again trying to get your exact right hand play. DO A LESSON ON IT haha
Thing i noticed changes sound quality are strings. Who would know my antique 7 years old strings sound so bad, but since they are antique anyone wants to buy them? Starting at 10k $
Smrdljivko Pljesnivi haha yeah totally worth it, take my money
I've got some closing in on 10 yrs. Bargain basement price, today only, $29.99
The tone of the guitar so good that it made me say wow! when Paul touched the string, even though the sound was coming from my 40 dollar crappy speakers.
