Like when you get a high quality acoustic electric and u lower the midst ... that's what I feel the vintage sounds like. The 2019 sounds so thin compared to the 1942 one. I wonder why. You say something like the age of the 1942 model has somehow 'ripened', like wine. What do you think, will the 2019 get the same sound 80 years from now or is Martin simply not able to create a sound like that right now. Groetjes.

    • @willemvandijk8860
      @willemvandijk8860 6 лет назад +16

      @Iliya Yanev I just read somewhere that somewhere in the late 60's, because of high demand Martin changed their way of drying the wood from air-dried to kiln-dried. That could be the reason why the 2019 model sounds different. But in that case the quality of the 2019 will never improve in such a way that it will sound like the 1942 model. Which would be a shame because the 1942 model sounds so much better.

    • @screaminbabyjones
      @screaminbabyjones 6 лет назад +15

      @@willemvandijk8860 It sounds thin primarily because it's been a guitar for less than 2 months. It hasn't settled, and it hasn't been played. The other guitar has been played (I assume) for 70+ years. The Adirondack Spruce top/Brazilian Rosewood back/sides doesn't hurt either--especially in loudness. • @chrissanbrook617
    @chrissanbrook617 2 года назад

    The difference is really amazing, but the comparison is not fair for the new and not yet played guitar. They still build amazing guitars at Martin today, and after some years of playing a nowaday´s guitars can develop to resonate big, open and amazing, too.
    I had a similar experience with my 2003 HD28 (selected from several new and used Martins as the best for me when I bought it new in 2003). I have played this guitar quite frequently over the years. In 2016, a friend of mine wanted to buy a D28/HD28 and asked me to bring mine to the shop as a reference for a comparison (because he had heard mine before). There were several stock new Martins there (D28s and HD28s). My 13 years old selected and frequently played HD28 literally blew them all away, very much like in this video. It turned out to be pointless to compare my guitar with these new ones.
    It would be very interesting to compare a frequently played and well resonating newer guitar (like mine) with this vintage treasure. That would have been tighter, I bet. Maybe you don´t have to spend 55.000 €, but just find a new or used guitar, which you love, and just play it...

      Rare old and collectible has got to be most of the price. Getting old materials to make a new guitar isn't easy or cheap but you can find anything if you search long and hard. Let's say 5K to find equivalent materials. Then find a luthier who can do the quality of work you want. I'd say you could easily get the equivalent sound for less than half the price.

    Martin changed the method of manufacture of the D28 in the late 40s, and made the bracing on the soundboard more thick. That is why the pre war Martins sound different and are so sort after - they simply sound better. After that, many people had their Martins thinned out (with scalloped bracing) to sound like the pre war Martins. Martin eventually responded and started to make a pre war guitar style 28 and it is called the HD28 (H representing the herringbone trim around the soundboard). A true comparison would have been the 1942 D28 against the 2019 HD28. I have a 2003 HD28 and it is hands down the best sounding guitar I've ever heard - I'd put it up against the 1942 one anytime. Hope you guys do the comparison I'm suggesting. Great video!

    Good lawd! I’m one of those tone-deaf people that annoys my friends when we go to the guitar shop because I can barely tell the difference between how a $300 and a $3000 guitar sounds (hey, I’m a bass player), but this is like night and day. That 1940s guitar sounds AMAZING! Buy it! Please! You only live once!

    You can really tell your picking on the 2019 is activating the compressor on your audio, whereas the 1942 is so resonant that you don't have to work so hard to get a strong sound out of it. Seems like you really have to convince that 2019 to play in comparison to the 1942.

    The 2019 Martin D-28 is the worst it will sound in its brand new state. Get it and make your own history...admittedly, the 1942 is amazing, but very difficult to justify the cost of ownership. I have owned my 2002 D-28 fresh out of the box...I will never give that guitar up until the day I pass...it's so good...was good out of the box, but even so much better! My musical partner!

    I've never played a vintage Martin, but the best acoustic guitar I've played was my uncles 1930s Gibson. It projects loud and warm yet articulate and defined. Amazing resonance. Also plays better then any expensive acoustic I have tried at a music store. That part surprised me.

      new is not always better, especially when it comes to tonewood. you even can observe that phenomenon in new guitars, when u buy it and play it regularly after a couple of years it already opens up a lot.. and those 70 year old guitars had quite some time to do that :)

      in part its to do with the woods and glues aging and settling, also an older guitar will likely be more played in, and easier to get a good sound out of. i think they can artifically create this effect to some extent, i seem to rememebr reading/hearing that japanese guitar factories/luthiers do it quite often, brands like yamaha and such

      Pre-war Martins also have different bracing which allows the body of the guitar to resonate differently .... Check our Norman's Rare Guitars guitar of the day for some Flattop Friday examples of other pre-war Martins.

    What I worked out a long time ago is, if you want a vintage guitar, especially acoustic, you better factor in ‘total cost of ownership’. It will need the absolute right environmental humidity and temp-wise all the the time. It will need you to have a good knowledge of guitar adjusting, like proper luthier knowledge, or conversely the services of a top luthier to keep it on check. And unless you have a wildly popular RUclips channel or are a serious performer, very few people will ever care when you’re playing it and you’ll be nervous any time the thing is sitting in a stand on stage and you aren’t up there.
    This is why I favor the modern custom shop guitars that are manually road worn.
