- The Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) Meter Gauge Line from Lumding to Badarpur also known as the Barak Valley, a 221-km railway track that was built by the British through the most difficult terrains and mountains in Assam’s Dima Hasao district was also an engineering marvel comprising of 37 tunnels and 586 bridges that came in to operations in the year 1903.The line was primarily constructed to transport tea, coal and timber produced in the upper Assam region.Post the Partition of Bangladesh in 1947 the Lumding-Badarpur section however became the only life-line for land-locked Tripura, Mizoram, the Barak Valley in southern Assam as also south-eastern Manipur due to the borders.
The 111 year old MG line became history in 2014 to make way for a broad gauge track as a part of the uni-gauge Project of Indian Railways. Presently Broad Gauge Services have began on this line initially Freight Services were started and now the Passenger and Express Trains have become functional connecting the Northeast to the rest of India. Lumding-Badarpur section belongs to the Lumding division of Northeast Frontier Railways. Badarpur is a important Junction from where the lines branch towards Silchar and Agartala.
The video is a compilation of the Train Journey on the Meter Gauge Brarak Valley Express from Lumding to Silchar. Enjoy the true rich beauty of the least explored North East.
The MG Trains that ran on this section are Lumding - Silchar Cachar Express and Barak Valley Express, Lumding - Agartala Express and the Lumding - Halflong Hill Queen Express. The line is highly dominated by the Freight Trains.

Memories... I was in class 4 .. in haflong ... My dad in assam rifles... Those rides on the hill queen express... Terror stories of mr garlosa ... The old jatinga station.... We used to have lunch at lower haflong and then board the train back at haflong hill.... I have countless memories with this route.. thanks for sharing .... What we have witnessed and experienced is now history.... I miss those pineapples with chilli powder sold by cute n smiling tribal girls...
Is this alive??
Same bro...
My father was also in assam rifles when I got there. The camp was near Budha Mandir. These videos just bought back those nostalgic memories when I used to travel. I used to sit beside window to count the tunnels. 😂
@@nisam1637 No,it is replaced by broad gauge train now.
A portion of the MG route should have been preserved by NFR as a heritage. The entire MG route, draped in pristine beauty was severely underrated.
Beautiful...!! No words to describe....and a bit emotional too !! Thank you soo much for sahring !!
I was in 2nd class and my age was 6 when I traveled in the legendary night train The Cachar Express from Silchar to Lumding junction in 2012 that scary but beautiful train journey was a memorable experience. The lights on the coaches were dim but beautiful and the YDM 4 class locomotive was chugging very hard to climb the steep gigantic hill and the LP Saheb was blowing the famous and magical twin tone horn that was unique from any other meter gauge section's locomotives
I still miss those days of MG very much 😭
I really miss this days 😭😭 the felling of traveling this train was so good 😭😭 really missing those days
I really miss those MG trains...What memories those were...Really feeling nostalgic
Old is gold. Old memories comes back. I almost weep. Actually old route is better than new route. Indian railway can develop the old meter gauge. It's a treasured for NCHills.
Though I have never travelled in this route earlier, but heard a lot of stories from a family friend whose village is at halflong, he tells us a lot of stories from the early 2010's about his journeys, etc. In these MG trains! Loved to see all those greenery, commuters crowded at the roof top of the coaches, those old tough looking Lumding shed YDM4's etc, and the old semaphores too😍
All of those are now a history of NFR and IR,
Really nice sir❤
I'm from haflong too and i miss mg trains so much
Good old days 😢
I'm mesmerized by the beauty of NFR... Gr8 efforts for covering MG here & a special pat of appreciation for that old gentleman for wonderful folk song, really added a different perspective to the coverage !!!
+Pranav Chaware Thank you.
Childhood Memories Got Refreshed ❤️😭
thanks for this video old memories became fresh I live in badarpur
Omg!
Thanks for taking me through these golden memories.
Was searching for GL Passenger and Arunachal passenger and couldn't pull myself when I saw the petla petla Maal gari in this video.
Those maal gari were true love to see
0:55 that bridge takes you to New Haflong station directly and the route changes and the Lower Haflong station is a history now. After which you would find Bagetar then Jatinga but Bagetar is no more a station due to this new route.
lots of memories......
This video stirs up a lot of emotions. Excellent stills and shots. Your genuine love of Railways is expressing itself in this video, and that is very admirable. I wonder what will happen to these old engines and trains. If they have a life perhaps India can donate it to Nepal where there is a desperate need. The State of Assam is full of beauty, I hope it's safe from the separatist movement and violence. Anyway, thanks for the lovely video, believe it or not I feel so sentimental, it's hard to describe. One question, aren't there trains running in Arunachal Pradesh?
Ali started this year.
GONE but will never be forgotten. I can't thank you enough for this wonderful video.
I had lot travel in this narrow gauge in my childhood, only memories are forever, love assam
I can't recall since when I have been travelling through this train line. It reminds me of those beautiful stations, people and scenery that I used to see while traveling. A good initiative. Thanks for helping me in collection of my childhood memories

Good old days journey by that train . Hill Queen.
Great tribute to the NFR MG system!
Ever since 1991 and the start of Project Unigauge this system was counting its days... finally the Northeast will be connected to the rest of the country... while one bids adieu to a simpler slower past... one hopes for much better fortune in times to come. Cheers! :)
+Pulkit Nigam You are right, thank you.
I have traveled through this route many times, even when the carriages were drawn by steam engine! The train going through those long winding narrow bridges over the Jatinga river and valley crossings between the hills, and of course through numerous tunnels, was no less than an epic adventure journey!
I always wondered and used to get annoyed as the BG line was taking so long to start but now i miss MG a lot… MG stays in my heart
Wonderful video. I still remember those days... Visiting my maternal uncle place in Agatala... So scenic journey...always running late and halt in almost all the station, sometime in the middle of the jungle.... Maibang rivers, tunnels, montains and hills.. Thanks MG
Daddu's song warmed up the emotions 😭
Now these sceneries and trips are only present in our memories......
will be missing MG trains forever .. as now most of NG and MG lines are converted into BG ... osum compilation .. :-)

Old memories reflected in my eyes ..when i was in class 8 in the year 1997 and we had gone to kendriya vidhyalay panchgram near silchar to participate in sports.....what a memorable journey it was.....it nature call as everybody has to die one day....a single mg route should be preserved for our coming generation to see it
Thanks for sharing your nostalgic memories, true one heritage route should be preserved.

Fantastic and wonderful trip.Nice and magnificent video one of the best I have seen.Perfect sounds. Can somebody to travel on the top of coaches or on the loco?Thank you for all of them.GREETINS from GREECE!!!!!.
+KONSTANTINOS GKOURANIS Thanks for watching, appreciate. Traveling on top of the coaches is not permitted how ever Locals use to do that when ever the train is jam packed. These days with most of the sections converted do BG Track and a good number of trains play on all sections unlike before such a situation no longer arises.
Will MG train will ever run again in future
I wish it run again with the same line same old station like before
