I´m just taping a drywall here in Sweden after watching your excellent instruction. My only problem is talking to the tape and mud in english intesad of swedish because they seem to understand you much better then me.

I just did my 1st inside corner from watching your videos and it came out perfect, at least to my eye. Thanks for showing this lady how to fix my drywall.
Finally after watching 1.4 million videos, I started mudding and taping. And after being jedi-mind tricked into thinking I could come within a galaxy of these guys, I watched about 1.2 million videos over again to see what went wrong. This guy is now my favorite. Has reinspired me to think I can maybe get within two galaxies. Not sure where the h I'm at right now, but it's in the dozens of galaxies away. Who knew thin thin mud at the corners makes life less painful. I'm sure lots of video guys did....but this is the only guy who actually said it. He really is thinking about the first timer....who else tells you to leave the tape 1/4" away, and to set the outside corner first....and then why. Outstanding teacher, and many thanks.

I’ve been drywall finishing for 12 years now. I would say it’s definitely a skill of hand/wrist dexterity. I was just doing as a way to earn a living at the time, not knowing that it would end up changing my life.
I feel very blessed to have learned it. It has literally saved my life, and today I am extremely grateful for it.
Good on you man! Putting in the hours… learning a skill. I got fired for nefarious reasons from an office job and was so disgusted with the corporate life that I started as a helper on renos… learned drywall and a bunch of stuff over 5 years. It was very satisfying, but eventually dove back in office work for ten years. Now seriously thinking about going back in physical labor in my late fifties, mainly due to binge watching Vancouver Carpenter!

This young man works so hard at providing us the know how, and gives us the encouragement to tackle a project and save us so much money on our drywall project in the end. Let's not forget to give him a THUMBS UP after we view his techniques. It's not fair to watch the whole thing, garner all the info from him, and forget to give him a welcoming THUMBS UP. drywall inspection by my Hubby went well. He said it looked great! I finished the entire master bathroom today! (minus the shower waterproofing). OMG You really did teach the best! It is now 8pm but its done!!!!!

Sir, you have been an absolute help. My grandfathers bathroom had a mold issue and so it was gutted. Thankfully it's about 40 sq. ft room. Due to a NEED to save money, after the plumbers finished, I decided to tackle the drywall, etc. Felt in over my head pretty quickly. A handful of your videos really helped me get my feet underneath. OK! You are seriously good!!! Not only at mudding, but also at explaining the big picture overview of the main technique plus a number of very tiny but hugely helpful "tips". BUT WAIT:... there's more! You're also good at being clear and concise in your video presentation and don't ramble and/or add extraneous and boring filler. You are an excellent communicator with a serious focus on the subject matter while being light and airy personally. I came here because I couldn't get the mud onto the ceiling without making a God-Awful mess and watched you do it effortlessly and beautifully. Omg! I’ve been doing it like 90% right the whole time and have been suffering with the last step. I would of never thought of coating only one side than waiting for it to dry and do the other side. This tip has made my life so much easier. I have been using a corner knife to get Both sides perfect.
Yeah you might not want coat your tape on one side right away if there's a gap and it's not setup you will wrinkle the tape into it best to let dry and pinwheel your angles if you have many
Hey bro you've been so helpful. I'm a painting contractor by trade, but got a little uncomfortable on a few jobs where I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing. I have been told by homeowners and contractors that I have been to have been doing it for a long time, but I just watched your videos and translated my brush into a knife with a different kind of paint. This was THE FIRST video that helped me improve the finish coat of mud on the inside joint: The difference with this video is that by putting on a finish coat on (only) one side at a time--and letting it dry (that is the important part), it (side one) was much more resistant to me inadvertently digging into it with the edge of my knife, when I put the finish coat on the other side. I ended up doing the corner faster because I did not have to repeatedly coat, sand, coat, sand to fill in the wavy corners.
Big fan of your skate channel. I'm a 30 year old maintenance tech in North Carolina and I reference your skate stuff at home as fuel for my motivation to still skate in my 30's working full time. During my working life I often reference your DIY tutorials for work orders I have less experience on like sheetrock. I love it! Keep it up man.

Fantastic video and thanks for it. I followed your advice about thinning all purpose compound with a little water and it made my bathroom renovation SOOOO much easier. Too bad I didn't do it until about a third of the way through.. You're right. All purpose is way too thick for taping. Thanks for your channel.
edit- also, your video about prefilling was a life saver. Never would've thought about doing that. An extra step that saves time in the long run.
As a guy who did this(hand taping )for 17 years this lad does it exactly as I did 30 years ago. The only thing I would say is that it's a lot easier with a good "worked in" set of tools. Brand new trowels and filling knives are a pain.

Thanks for the videos you put out. I’ve been a DIY guy and have done several projects over the years. I have spent so much time on mudding and sanding. I wish I had had these videos when I started. But I’m sure I’ll do more work at some point and I will definitely be doing your techniques. You make it look so easy but I’m sure even doing as you show takes practice to get it right. Aaahhh, coat 1 side of the corner, genius!!, I was always in a hurry and tried to do both. Always took 6 coats and 2 hours of sanding.
You can do both corners if you use a inside and outside corner knife. It's angled to fit both sides of the corner
Awesome videos, I was having a terrible time with taping inside corner's, wasn't getting my mud thin enough, after watching several of his videos, I was able to to get it done the correct way. Awesome videos, keep them coming!

Just did two 23 foot off angle, wall to ceiling joints with this stuff. It was a bit of a chase to do it by myself, but they turned out much better than if I hadn't seen how you do it. They may be perfect afer getting the topping coats. Thanks a million for making the videos.

I think that's funny! Most people feel the same way.... I guess there's a trick to handling mud, but it's not really that hard if you relax and become friends with it. I find it relaxing. If it's just the tape that frustrates you.... maybe try the sticky mesh tape. I think it's easier, and really it's a better product. It'll never pop off, and you put it on before mud... nice and neat.

I tried finishing with a corner tool. The buildup in the middle is truly annoying. Was wondering how to avoid it, but using just the mud knife seems to help. Also thank you for the tip on how thick the mud should be. No other DYI seems to mention it. I was using the mud straight from the bucket. Sweating up there while doing wall/ceiling joints. 😓
You can't really avoid the build up. It's annoying because its so thick it cracks as it shrinks.
Visionist try a TapeBuddy tool for your corners and flats. It applies just the right amount of compound to the tape so helps with the speed and mess of taping.
The corner trowel can tend to roll the tape around the corner. A lot if this is because of the amount of compound applied to the corner. Again, the TapeBuddy tool applies just the right amount of compound to the tape so you don't need to precoat the corner. It makes the tape lay flat and tight to the drywall. You should try one out. It works on all seams.
Press on the entire upper edge with your fingers to keep it flat, if you do it right you wont have a problem.

Pretty solid advice over all and in a systematic way which is how you want to end up being when doing something like this. A good thing to note is how you went from the middle out and the benefit to that is so you're not pushing a lot of mud if you start from one end and go all the way to the other end which can sometimes tear your tape just enough to damage the job as well as just cause an over all pain in the tapping process in general.
what do you do if the ceiling is finished and patterned or textured? (replacing wall drywall)?
I really like the finish and the fact you dont used 3-4 steps to apply compond plus the good pro tip on laying the tape + scrape the bottom first because it most likely will have a hole r bubble than the top + con on 45 degee angle when appying the mud so it doesnt come off👍👍👍👍

Young man, I am 57 years old ... have been doing my own DIY projects for years, even drywall. Over the past year doing some major home repairs and you sir - "hands down" been my most valuable asset in nearly everything I've been doing. I do have question as I cannot seem to find the video again... (anyone else can please answer also) what is the name/brand of the "top coat" you recommend. Thank you for your knowledge and time!
We use blue lid/box which is called plus 3 for coating and for tapping all purpose green lid/box. All purpose (if used for coating) leaves alot of scratches when sanding it.

Great tutorial! I've watched it a few times now. One question, though, on longer walls, can you cut the paper tape to smaller lengths, let's say 5-6 ft, or must it be in one piece in order to avoid possible movement or settlement cracks? I can't easily find the answer with general internet searches, either. If it's cut, do you overlap tape ends on a run or simply butt them? Thanks for the vids, and the sense of humor!
I use shorter pieces of tape. My thought - if my wall is going to move enough to break tape, then whether or not there are several joins won't stop it. I butt, and do not overlap, as overlapping doubles the thickness of the tape - might not seem like much but it's still a bump and unless I sand the paper off (which makes overlapping pointless), it would be noticeable to my eye and more work than needed. JMO.

I hung my rock myself and had someone finish it. Big savings and the guys who do it day in and day out do it better in less than half the time. I find it better to let them do it in order to free up my time to do something else
