I have actually used handmade paints before. They were locally made and I was so excited to get my hands on them.

I love using handmade watercolours as they have such interesting characteristics and can be of amazing quality such as deep deep light (made in Latvia) or Della Magma from Italy who focus on special and historic pigment. Very different, but beautiful and unique! Really gorgeous each in their own way.

The only handmade watercolours that I’ve used are metallics. I was looking for more natural metallic colours (metal colours) rather than metallic red and blue for example. It just so happened that the closest set I could find to what I was looking for was handmade. So it was more of a coincidence rather than a deliberate choice to get handmade. I really like them though! (My main watercolours are student grade, but maybe one day I will upgrade)

They are fun in a sketchbook but aren't fade resistant. I do enjoy playing with them. They are usually expensive, so order a couple now and then for fun.
    These colors are lovely.

Nice review, Toby. No, I have not ever used "handmade" watercolors. For one, they are too expensive and not easily available. And secondly, I have purchased over the last year, way too many different brands of watercolors that I have yet to use. I'm on a limited budget now so I better just use up what I have before I start buying any more watercolors. 😆

I absolutely love Essee watercolors, handmade in Latvia. I buy them on Etsy.
Their ancient earth pigment palette is fabulous. I wish I had the money to use Essee paints exclusively.

Latvia? I thought they were in Spain and then moved to Italy?

I don't use handmade watercolours, for two reasons: 1. When I am selling my art, I must be confident that the colours won't fade within a few years. 2. They are simply way too expensive.

Fair points! Light-fastness should depend on the pigment used not the rest of the formulation.
If traditional pigments are used that are known to be light-fast then I wouldn't worry about that, the difficulty of courses is knowing exactly what has been used.

    • @sammiller9855
      @sammiller9855 8 месяцев назад +2

Most commonly used Earth pigments have excellent lightfastness.

    • @msfrehel8758

Daniel Smith are expensive too, at least in Europe! And the lightfastness depends on the pigments that are used, so it‘s important that you get some information about the pigments that are used.

All very valid points. But I need not only someone telling me they have used lightfast pigments. I need a company that guarantees that, and that is still around in 30 years. Don't get me wrong. I love handmade things, and I find it absolutely appropriate to charge more for them compared to industrially produced stuff. But there are some aspects in which bigger companies are just better. So I'm sticking with Schmincke for the time being.

This is rather off-putting for me. The way I learned it's all about single pigment paints with clear labels and a clear understanding of what paints you're using. The only convenience mixture I have in my palette is Indigo. This entire set is convenience mixtures. Calling something "fabulous unicorn blueish" doesn't describe anything at all. The only way to describe each of these is "oh that's a really pretty blue". As convenience mixtures they're entirely nonrepeatable across brands. AND you have no way to verify lightfastness and permanence - things that have been well documented for every proper pigment in every paint from every major brand. But I suppose some people are the opposite and can't wrap their head around any technical paint information.

Well listen - if that sounded a little harsh - I can certainly understand the draw of the fantasy land of an endless supply of pretty colors to play with, but I've just done a good job of avoiding the siren song. Every convenience color that company is offering can be mixed with the paints I have, and I've selected from all the top brands for the best characteristics offered for each pigment I'm after.

@@team-zracing7476 this is very reasonable view point that I can fully understand.
My personal view is that saying some people 'cant wrap their head around technical information', just to me, lacks empathy and understanding of the different reasons that people are painting. I'm not a fan of gate keeping, and statements like that in my experience are reasons that some people don't take their art further.
Got to stress, that is just my view and personal experience. And I also really appreciate the well reasoned response.

@@TobySketchLoose Thanks. Good. However, "lacks empathy and understanding" is incorrect. Yes of course we all paint for different reasons, different motivations. It is a fact that some are more right-brain and some more left. Some thrill at driving a manual transmission well, and some have greater appreciation for the exceptional design lines of the auto body - and others are more interested in whatever will happen at their destination. I'm here for truth. It is a fact that some people can't wrap their head around any technical paint information. It is also true that some of those same people have a much greater aptitude than I for artistic communication/creation. If you unflinchingly seek truth, in the end you have empathy and understanding for all. Thx Toby.
