One of the lessons I keep learning over and over: I don't have to draw everything I can see, and I don't have to color everything I draw.

Thank you Toby! Yesterday I sat in my car and sketched a corner street scene! Fun, quiet time and creative time!🎉

Thanks for these tips. Great advice, esp re zooming in on what could otherwise be an overwhelming scene. Generally I find a bench & then see if there's anything to sketch. I love my waterbrush too. Just add a small sketchbook (I always have one on me), a water soluble pen, plus permanent one maybe. Elegant Writer pens are great too, as with water, they turn a bit pink/green!

LOVE the teaching point regarding how to measure heights, lengths and angles.

Thanks so much Toby. The main problem I have outside is getting overwhelmed by the expanse of what I can see. Your comparison of that to a photograph which limits the scene really resonated with me, because the paintings I do from photographs are by and large much better. I will make a conscious effort to "contain my vision" and see what happens. As you rightly say, people are really lovely when they come over. And the chances are we will never see them again. Thanks for the pointers.

Great tips! Thank you! When I started sketching outside, it was definitely other people that was the most daunting for me! But after a while I got used to it. Although there are still times when I don’t feel comfortable, if it’s really busy. Last summer I sketched 40 sculptures that were on display around my town, including a few in the main shopping area. I was too self conscious in a busy shopping street so I took photos and did those ones at home! But in general, the interactions with people have always been good. I especially like it when children want to see what you’re doing because there is nothing fake or forced in their reactions!

Today is our 4th day on a Danube Viking River Cruise! It’s so exciting to see in person European architecture with its details! Now I understand what those details are that you sketch😮. This video is perfect for my attempts to create from our veranda! And my album of paintings to draw, sketch and paint is growing ! Understanding that I don’t have to include everything I see lessens my anxiety about attempts to produce a sketch. Thank you Toby for this excellent lesson😊

We just got back from our Viking Danube River Cruise! I was so excited about the architecture but very intimidated by all the details. I sketched a couple of things but mostly took lots of pictures and I am working through those at home. It's a beautiful cruise, isn't it? My favorite stop was Bratislava. Such a charming little city.

@@pamdaggett8155 yes! The architecture is very intimidating. I’m trying to learn to simplify scenes and not get caught up in detail. My phone is full of “photos to paint.” It will all happen at home as I accidentally didn’t pack my colored pencils😤 though I’m working on pencil and pen drawings.
We are taking the cruise from Regensburg south to Budapest & currently are docked at Vienna. I enjoy the quaint, small cities: Passau is my favorite, so far.
My name is also Pam 😀

I have used headphones as well, very effective. My seat is a larger version, I will get a smaller one, easier to carry.

I appreciate all the suggestions... so that one day I will leave the kitchen table and go outdoors. So much out there to paint. I'm learning to not be a perfectionist as a beginner with watercolor, so thank you for the comparisons of your three paintings of the opera house and how you used them.
As always, thank you for the video!

Thank u Toby for sharing your tips. I tend to stay in my little campervan to paint as that's easier with my ailments but makes it harder to get my windows lined up with what I would like to paint.... Its not just moving your body around but the whole vehicle! lol But at least I have a comfy seat, my dog is happy beside me and I can get a cuppa too, so lots of advantages to my little camper.
I have just purchased your recommendation palette and looking forward to its arrival and testing it. I have just signed up for your 10 day free course, thank u for offering this to us all, very much appreciated Toby. I have just scanned it quickly and it looks fab....it will defo take me longer than 10 days to complete though. love Alli X

Hi Tony. Thank you for the video. I am wondering do you know of a small stool like yours that would have a back too?
