  • I love a bit of clever packaging and design and these watercolour fan sets hit the spot. I wanted to check whether they are any good or whether the design is just a gimmick.
In this film, I am testing the Basic 42 colour traveller's watercolour set from Meeden and also the Pearlescent 42 colour traveller's watercolour set. Although I was sent them for free, the opinions here are as unbiased as I can make them!
Meeden has given me a discount code to share, which will save you a further 10% (post is included in UK, USA, Canada and Australia). It is Liz10. You can use it here: meedenart.com?sca_ref=3687517.WIMJFLNH9d. (I get a small commission, you will not pay extra)
The specific link to the traveller's watercolours is: go.meedenart.c...
Alternatively check out their website as they were offering 15% off 2 unique products for the back to school season. I am not sure how long this is running.
I aim to share a tip or technique every week - usually on Sunday at 2pm. I might throw in a few bonus films or shorts, so it’s worth hitting the notification bell to be alerted to the next one.
Every like and comment tells RUclips to show this to more people, so please jump in and share with your creative friends. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizc...

Agree, these sets are fun and affordable for travel, for families travelling with small children, to keep in the car, in an RV, stash in a cabin or beach cabana, a backpack, a handbag for a quick lunchtime urban sketch. The brushes look pretty great for waterbrushes!

My reasoning on the water brushes undoing “backwards” is, when the top is screwed off, you don’t undo the wrong bit and end up with water everywhere.

I bought this set a month or so before I saw your video. I didn't like the paint and donated it to the senior center coloring class. They had fun with so many colors.

Hullo Liz, I believe that cheap n cheerful describes these paints perfectly! I was given a 32 or 34 color set of paints like these 2 Christmas’ ago. They are white labeled just about everywhere! My set actually was put out by a local charity and they had their own logo and name at the top of the kit! I have only used these once and they worked fine. I prefer a small 12 metal palette for my traveling palette and I am just an avid DaVinci Paints of California collector and I have used DaVinci paints in just about every palette I own! Excluding this C&C kit and one lovely A.Gallo set with a Rosa Gallery paints set from Ukraine! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions about these paints. I am a true believer in using the best papers you can get! I share the story of my best ever drawing of my baby sister, I used that brown course figure drawing pad for a quick portrait and it is truly lovely, BUT it is on that horrible paper! It has faded and gone yellow-brown quite “gunkie”! I have scanned it and cleaned it the best I can. The original is just crap! I no longer even doodle on scratch paper. I have a small book I doodle in and it is 100% cotton paper. If I do something good that merits larger treatment or painting, I know the original will be around for my lifetime! Thanks Liz!

such a shame about the portrait! I recognise that usually you get what you pay for, but not everyone can afford expensive supplies, so it’s nice to look out for affordable but interesting things. I would put these in that bracket. it won’t be my go to paint, but I might grab it for an urban sketch or two!

I love the couple of sets I have. Great for spontaneous fun. I have made swatches in the style of the fans and put a brad at the top in order to fan it out. Works fine for finding which paint color your searching for.
    Tfs

I've had these for a year or so and keep them at the cabin at the lake so I am always prepared to paint plen aire. I really like a lot about them but the biggest drawback is that the pans flake when they dry and sometimes the tiny flakes land on a different pan. That can be very inconvenient, depending on what I am painting. I still use and enjoy them though.

Winsor & Newton do a pearlescent medium (in their familiar shaped 75ml glass bottle) which you can add to any watercolour paint which was a fun and interesting experiment but have to say pearly effects aren't really my thing generally so it remains in the cupboard. These Meeden sets really are very inexpensive though and very practical for out-and-about sketching and as you say, would make a terrific gift to a youngster or someone trying out. Thank you again Liz for sharing your findings, it's always interesting.

I have tried out the 18 set by Royal & Langnickel. (Looks exactly the same as that Meeden kit) Saw it at Walmart and thought, why not? Turns out, I really like it for out and about. The form factor & portability. (The R&L remind me of my old Daler Rowney paints.) They’re fun.
I’m probably going to give those Meeden a try because, well, why not, more colors. (No pinks , no white, and only 1 brown in the set I have.)
    Thanks for the review.

I think Superior make these and white label to all other suppliers, including Jackson’s, Great Art, Meeden. I got mine on sale from Superior for £4 (not the usual price sadly) and for that price I love it! If it were as expensive as I have seen it on sale in shops (sometimes as much as £35) i might not have bought it (I don’t really need a student set) , but they are pretty fun and at that cheap price it was a steal. It is a nice fun student set, probably dye based or boosted but not a bad dye based set at all. Great for kids and teens and for fun sketchbook stuff. It reminds me a lot of the much more expensive Stuart Semple set

re the sticky metallics - Superior sell their metallics as gansai-style paints so that’s why they are sticky and feel different
