  • The eyes make or break an animal portrait. They are what you look at first when you see a painting. They draw you in and hopefully sparkle with life and character.
    In this short tutorial I show you how I paint the three sorts of animal eyes in watercolour, from a simple dark circle with a highlights, to something larger and more complex, to one where the pupil is clearly defined - the sort of eye you might see in a dog or cat.
    Watercolour is perfect for painting animals full of character. It is full of light and life, so if you let it move around on the paper it does half the work for you.
    This is something I teach on my in person workshops (see www.lizchaderton.co.uk/workshops) or online in my popular Painting Animals in Watercolour course (see www.lizchadert...) and it makes such a difference!
    Every like and comment tells RUclips to show this to more people, so please jump in and share with your creative friends. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizc...
    Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?
    If you want to have more in depth courses please head over to www.lizchaderto.... I also run a friendly Facebook group: / watercolourstudiowithl... .

    What a great tutorial! All your info translates to any medium. I always start with the eyes, and I spend the most time on them. It always amazes me how even a pinprick of color placed in the right place can make all the difference in the world. I'm saving this video for when I need a good refresher!😊🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

    I love your playful paintings and short projects very much, but value your expertise with bringing more realism like this video. Love-love-love all I need to learn from this one of the eyes.
    If your class site had lots of similar pictures to learn from using these techniques I would buy every one! Please, please, please do more examples in this wonderful detail! You are a delight to learn from!
    And I so agree with eyes first and most important in an animal! You always add your thoughts not only on painting, improving one’s painting, and the added bonus on what else you have learned and noticed about your subject and more! 💗💗💗

    Hullo Liz, thanks for sharing your thoughts, tip n tricks from your watercolor painting experiences! I used to save my eyes for last as they do make or break a portrait! I am doing them as I go these days. I am not as strict with my work as I used to be! You are truly generous and kind sharing your techniques,thank you. I have been mentioning your recipe for watercolor ground so if you get an occasional question blame me and your excellent techniques! Please take care and enjoy the rest of your day!

    Excellent tutorial as usual!
    One note on pupils: Horses also have horizontal pupils. I see a lot of paintings of horses that have round pupils. It pays to spend time with a real animal, because sometimes photos do not provide enough contrast and definition in the eyes.

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Месяц назад +2

      my top tip is that we tend to overplay the size of human eyes, because Tgey are important to us. So always check and double check the size and placement

    Great video Liz. Thank you.
    One cheeky question. At about 12:13 there's a view of the while sheet of paper and I can see loads of drips of paint in the top right near the palette. Are those drip marks deliberate on your part? Because I look at them and recognise them as your work straight away!

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Месяц назад

      hee hee, you weren’t meant to notice that 😆 if it weee a painting I would have been more careful. usually I do spatters very deliberately, but if there is an accidental one I can’t remove, then adding a few more makes it look intentional
