- While documenting the original Schwegmann's Grocery Store in the Bywater area of New Orleans, I came across a couple of old, abandoned buildings attached to it. I couldn't find any information about them so if you know anything please let me know. I also found a bizarrely decorated Pay Phone.

The building is awesome man but the pay phone 1:07 is a work of art. Great video man I had a blast
Yeah I love that phone! lol!
Very beautiful buildings. It would be nice to hear the story about these buildings. God bless
A real blast from the past....tfs👍👍👍👍❤🤗❤🥃
I just love the architecture of the buildings there. Hopefully they will restore such a beautiful building. Thanks for sharing!
I love it too ;)
Those abandoned buildings have some beautiful architecture! Hope they bring them back. New sub here :)
The Arcade Couple They really do! Thanks so much!! :)
Whatever it was historically, I think it more recently was intended to be an apartment building, based on Google Streetview. In 2016, it had five electric meters on the side of the building. Now, in your video, it appears to have only one. In earlier Streetview images, it didn't have any, dating back to 2007. Whatever they planned to do with it, the abandoned status of the building doesn't appear to have changed since 2007. The graffiti on the door to the right hasn't even changed in 11 years.
What I was able to find through the New Orleans Assessor's Office, is that building is part of 901 Piety, so part of the original Schwegmann's, with records dating back to 1960.
I'm not sure of Schwegmann's history that far back, but I know by the late 1960s and through the 1970s, when New Orleans had a large influx of Vietnamese immigrants, Schwegmann gave them jobs in large numbers and housed them. Within walking distance of Schwegmann's Tall Timbers store, there was an entire apartment community built for the immigrant employees of that store. Part of their pay included housing.
It could be that either the Schwegmann family lived in that building, or rented rooms to the employees (there couldn't have been too many employees in that small store).
Yeah, the Schwegmann's lived above the old store on the corner. I think these were originally storerooms for the store but later turned into something else. Now it looks like they're in process of turning into yet another thing but stalled.
There is so much history there in New Orleans. I live in Metairie and work in the quarters. Ever been to 533 Royal? It is the New Orleans Collection Museum. Free to get in and gives a lot of history of Louisiana.
I've been wanting to check that place out! Definitely soon! Thanks, CJ!!
Love old buildings and hopefully they are remodeling them. That phone was cool lol.
*patiently waiting for noladeej to find a opening*👀
Lol!! I wanted to so badly!!
Does anyone remember the old abandoned building near the area on Piety and Charter Street, right across where the Crescent Park steps that arc over the levee wall is? Travelers used to call it the Ol' 49th, because it was some type of production studio. It was fairly large, several thousand square feet of space. For a long time, it was a hideout for gutter punks and street people. This was back before Katrina. Since the area has been modernized with new development, it looks just like anywhere else you see; its uniqueness is gone with the wind.
Blinging out the pay phone! All ties in I guess. Ripped a cipher lock off of somewhere
Lol, only in New Orleans :)
there's nothing at the County assessors? you can't find who owns it? that should all be public information and then you could find out their intentions were the property, you could call them as a potential buyer. just to find out the information. the city's got to have some sort of record all of that is public information unless it's hidden behind a corporation. I think what you're seeing inside is just holding up the balcony so it doesn't collapse the building it doesn't look like remodel it looks like a Band-Aid for the moment just so it doesn't collapse the ceiling in. I think the neighborhood is poor enough that nobody would want to sink the kind of money it would take to fix them and that makes me really sad. I wish I was there so I could do research. you know I have a soft spot for Louisiana. well thank you again and hopefully you'll find out more information from the city or county or whoever has the information for that part of town. XO to you and yours as always. G.
I'm looking into it, but I believe it was originally a storeroom for the grocery store on the corner.
Whats a county?
beardliestgamer Google it. we don't use the word ward here. we have counties. certain parts of the US just call the areas that have different names different things if you really honestly want to know Google it.
Ahoy Deej! It be me what decorated that dubloon operated talking machine!!! Lol! Quite a work of art, huh? That building reeks of history! I cannot wait until you find out some info on it! The iron work in the windows might suggest a bank, or some other type of financial institution. Just a guess. Thanks for the take along! Next time!
Ahoy!! Yeah I was thinking maybe a bank, but just not sure. That phone was awesome! hehe
Love this💥💥
Thanks, Ben!
good stuff my friend I'm jealous I love doing this stuff
Me too, I love all the old stuff, hehe!
going by the architecture of the brick building on the inside upstairs if i had to guess it was a hotel back in the day.
Possible.. some indications are that it was a storeroom for the grocery store on the corner. What it was after that I haven't been able to find out yet.
I lived in Bywater before and after Katrina hit.for a long time That building was a funky old grocery store that you would only buy certain things...or else...It might have been one of the original Schwegman' s Grocery Stores back in the day...but it was called "The Bell Market"while I lived there 90's to 2005.
When Katrina hit -the grocery store was abandoned When someone opened the door to the market in December I can't even explain the horrible stench that came out of it.It permeated your nostrils in a way that was just God-awful. People would ride their bikes past and you had to cover your nose and mouth for blocks to get rid of the stench.
But-it is pretty from the outside and would need a good cleansing (both spiritually and physically) Ah Bywater..I miss it but not certain things ...Bye.
That phone was a masterpiece lol
Hah! I love seeing stuff like that! :)
Yeah me too
OMG, was that pay phone under water from Katrina?!
The payphone almost certainly predates Katrina...I don't think any new ones have been installed in 20+ years. But the Bywater is high ground, close to the river. It didn't flood in Katrina.
bywater is on natural high ground, it's called the sliver by the river... doesn't flood
WAGE let's turn this into a goth club
Who knows? But get outta there before the sun goes down, be careful around there.
Heh, ah it's not so bad :)
It's fineeee
