former prisoner in the MDOC. My heart broke for those guys left behind. All I could think about is what if that had happened to me. I know most convicts are worthless repeat offenders. But some of us get out and move on successfully. I am now a small business owner and father to 5. I work hard at being a good person and keeping my karmic energy clear. I totally re invested myself when I came home from prison. I wonder how many guys like me perished in the prisons during Katrina. I hope the pedos and rapist got the worst of it
I jus wanna say I'm fuckin proud of you.
I know, probably 80% if not more are repeat offenders, non stop doin bad shit, dangerous and they just quit caring what happens to them anymore... It breaks my heart.
But guys like you, man im proud af of you and I don't even know you lol.
I myself am kind of the opposite of my husband.... I worked and went to college by the time I was 16 I'd finished high school and had the rest of my life laid out for me it was pretty much smooth sailing for me... But then I met him... And HE was constantly going in n out of jail, breaking house arrest... I'll never forget the first time I got pregnant, I drove to his house to tell him... He was so happy dude I was scared he felt like I felt, like "FUCK what did we DO!!!??" Lol but nah he was so excited!! Told me he loved me n stuff n I had to hurry off to work, we would talk about it all when I got off... I got off that night, went to his house to find him not there.... Eerie... I didn't get to see him again besides in court for the next 11months... I miscarried a few weeks later... But I stayed n I waited for this guy I love so much, we're still together, married 12years now and he hasn't been in trouble in years, last time was traffic tickets, nothing crazy he's settled down alot... He's like you I think, he sees what it's like on that side of things, he's been taken away from it, missed it n wanted nothing more than to come home to us.. he's a different guy now in the whole getting in trouble sense. He grew up, maybe that's how we can put it. Lol
Point is, I know it's HARD.... I've seen it firsthand... And I'm so glad you're out here with your 5wonderful babies and their beautiful momma, running your business killin it at life!!! Fuck yeah 🙏

@@allexgarcia7312 Thank you so much for saying that ❤️ No one has ever said something like that to me, except for me😁 I tell myself that, most people are to busy with life to be concerned with me 😀 and that is okay. I was locked up from 2002 - 2007. Came home and never went back. I was fully aware of the statistics and determined to beat the odds 💪🏽 I own a fitness company now and I'm a certified personal trainer, a dream I created while in prison. (I worked out religiously in the joint).
Shout out to your hubby! it warms my heart to know there are other guys out there that made it out of the criminal lifestyle! To many times we only hear about the ones that go back. I'm proud of you and your husband 💯 Keep doing the right thing👊🏽

But, its also so rewarding in many ways, top way is mental health. Keep pushing, you're giving your children someone great to look up to and will strive to be like. SAME IM COMPLETELY SHOCKED
You probably never heard about the national guard coming in assaulting civilians and stripping them of fire arms and other weapons. During hurricane Katrina either. Not to mention the asbestos pre manufacture mobile homes given to the people who lost there homes. That where deemed unsafe after people started dying in mass numbers in there sleep, all of witch where confiscated and “destroyed” aka re branded and sold cheap to miners and oil field workers across the country.

All of us weren't left in the basement some of us were still on those floors that you walked on some of us were still stuck in some of those upper and lower level cells that you walked in some of us stayed inside that building for 3 days with no food and no water I am one of those people

So like what happened to the trustees that are mostly not in cells or any of the inmates that were not in a cell at the time? I ask this bcuz they could’ve opened the cells for yall. Did anyone actually drown at this jail or was it the CCC jail like ppl are saying?? What did the guards say to yall before leaving?? You say some of y’all were still stuck?? Where were the others that wasn’t stuck?? Why didn’t the inmates that wrote the HELP message on the roof get food from the kitchen or commissary?? Was it all under water and were there ppl in there too?? I have so many questions but I’ll stop here. I’m so sorry that this happened to yall and I hope you are living well and staying positive. @@dajadynasty honestly ppl did die in some of those buildings, that's not the only building. Guards said nothing to us they just left.
The first homeless man said "the basement is creepy, like a kill room or butcher shop. I can take you down there if you want." Um No Thanks

I was in this place before, during & after Katrina. Wasn't moved till 4 days later only to be taken to Hunts Correctional Facility and slept on the ground in the rain for 2 days. We were outside taking showers with a hose pipe, they threw peanut butter and jelly sandwiches over a 20ft fence to feed over 800 inmates. You never experienced hell till you experienced these living conditions. I had a friend in there who had a seizure and they refuses to help him. At the time the Sheriff was Marlin Gusman, a born idiot who allowed his deputies to abandon us them 3 days following Katrina. No food, no water or medical attention. So.e were to be released 3 days prior to Katrina but the governor called for a mandatory evacuation allowing inmates to be held longer. I can honestly say that I wouldn't want anyone I hate to experience what I've been through those 3 horrific days. While trapped in there, you can hear inmates screaming from the lower floors till they went dead silent.

I am so sorry you had to live through that. I could only imagine how awful it must have been. I would love to know what they were thinking when they locked you all in the prison to die. They should be ashamed of themselves for the way they treated you and the other inmates.
Whoever made the decision to leave inmates to fend for themselves in a locked facility should face charges
I met a guy who escaped the prison death of Katrina on a short ride on a travel bus and it was shortly after the Katrina. He shared with me that he and some other prisoners were left stranded on a bridge and they all fought hard for survival ... he said he don't know who all made it but that all the documents in the prison was being destroyed and that he felt he could start over as a free man as he explained seeing people drowning in the water right below them I could see the freedom all over his face and he was still shaken a bit not knowing his final destination. He mentioned how high the waters were on the piece of bridge where they stood yelling for help, it sounded so sad, he explained they knew no one was coming for them. I don't know what he was in there for but I would hope that he would start over clean. He also mentioned a few of the fellas went in an opposit direction towards Texas and I do believe he told exactly how they escaped that water scenery but I have forgotten it however many prisoners were purposelyleft for dead so he said ... Now I'm going to watch this video to see what they are saying.
That’s sad and my heart goes out to him, but sadly, he’s not being 100% truthful about how the bridge situation happened. I made a comment earlier on here explaining the REAL situation and events told by literally everyone that I talked to including deputies who I worked with, the actual inmates themselves that were there on the bridge, and civilians. All of them had the same stories at different times(referencing the times that they individually told me the events of those horrible days). I mean IDENTICAL stories despite not knowing each other personally or knowing each other existed, with the exception of some deputies and inmates knowing each other from working/existing closely together then and presently. Not saying that the gentleman is a bad person or a liar or ANYTHING negative, I’m just saying that they seem to have embellished some facts and events. That’s all. God bless him and you.✊🏾💙

I hadn't repeated his story since that day ... it's not that serious of what I believe of what really happened, he made it out alive is what matters and that hopefully he made good with his freedom. Thanks for your kind information though.
Exploring abandoned places, is such a thrill for me. I am so jealous of people who make their living doing this. This one is very well done.
I really appreciate your exploration, nice job! As a healthcare worker I just need to say that you really should be wearing a good mask 😷. You don’t realize all the toxins growing in the places you are exploring and especially when it is wet and damp. The water is dripping through many layers on rotting, molding, mildew that you don’t want growing in your lungs! Just cuz I care! 😘

I suffered from mold exposure at my old house once and it does major harm to the body, digestive system, brain fog, anxiety, etc those people living there definitely need to be wearing mask and have circulating air. This is interesting thou looks fun to explore the empty buildings
Loved the video. I remember driving by there a few months before Katrina hit and to see it now and seeing that area now is kind of sad . What happened during and after Katrina is the closest thing to the walking dead you will ever see or not see . It was pure apocalyptical there and just shows a small glimpse of what will happen if that were to happen worldwide.. be safe everyone

Born and raised in New Orleans and this building is so creepy at night time! Most of our abandon buildings have power. We have a homeless man every Christmas put out a little Christmas tree in the window of the abandoned charity hospital. Should definitely have mask on. You should check out the hospital and the plaza tower building. The city has plans after Katrina to make it into a residential and commercial building that has extended power supply and water supply that could be used 3 months after a storm if needed. But it’s covered in asbestos

I’m extremely happy to have come across your channel and exploration of abandon places. The story behind this is insane and is even crazier that it was swept under the rug that correctional officers just left prisoners to die. That trips me out.
They just left all the prisoners behind locked up. Someone needs to be held accountable. The families of the prisoners who drowned should at the very least be compensated and the mayor should go to prison along with the guards. That's some bullshit
@Ron Dunn Exactly. Yes, it's absolutely terrible, but in all honesty, what could they have done? Horrible and frightening situation.
Nagin was Mayor of NO at time of Katrina, who served two tumultuous terms in office that ended in 2010, was found guilty by a jury in 2014 on 20 counts of wire fraud, bribery and tax evasion after a trial that captivated the city. He was the first New Orleans mayor ever convicted of corruption.
They could of atleast moved everyone to the top floor and paid a few guards hazard pay to stay behind and watch the prisoners and kept a generator going, or transferred them to different prisons in different states
@@NomadGuardian He ran off to Texas and let them fend for themselves. He showed NO leadership. All he did was scream. In Mississippi they took care of business and helped each other.

Homeless shelters R needed everywhere.
My friends went to New Orleans in 2020. There were hundreds of homeless around their hotel in the city of New Orleans. They were shooting up with needles right in front of the police on the sidewalk. There was a abandoned building some of them were staying in. Someone could have turned that building into a shelter. Even this jail could make a decent shelter but we don't bother with that. Thirty beds at the salvation army for cold nights. Smh.

I was homeless for 2yrs on the streets of new England including the harsh winters and you never had a building like this to stay in. As bad as some parts are this is a homeless person dream crash spot it even has power. I know if it was me I would of cleaned up one of the better areas swept it out and cleaned it up as best as could. The power alone is huge I dam near died from exposure a few times. My toes had turned purple from hypothermia and they have never been the same since. I'm glad you gave her some money most people would rather spit on you then help you. I had the cops come to my tent in the middle of the night in the snow and slash my tent apart and throw my belongings in the river leaving me with nothing but the clothes on my back and nowhere to sleep they dam near killed me by doing it and they did it to other people I knew who ended up freezing to death

@@eurasianhillbilly5513 it sure does get cold I know a couple people who are still homeless and 3 days before Christmas the cops went around the city slashing tents then having the city come pick them up. They slash them so the people can't just set them up somewhere else but now those people have no where to go at night and no blankets. I don't agree with the way they handled the situation they should offer them a bed in a shelter before doing this to them. The shelter around here only lets you stay for a couple weeks then you can't come back for 90 days the system sucks

My husband is from NO. He said that this really happened. The prison guards abandoned the prison and prisoners did drown. Many are missing as well.

@@williamjones7851 as an addict myself i really didn't mean it to come off sounding so judgemental. I'm not saying drugs are good or help you at all bC the problem obviously becomes dependency and then the long term damage outweighs really any immediate benefit/ relief, but there decimated is a reason people (such as myself) turn to drugs in the first place. Especially for people like me who have a lot of truama and also a whole host of mental and physical health conditions, I tried to explain to people that drugs are never the problem they actually are my own self-medicating solution to the problem, and as someone who's been around the block with inpatient rehab more than once i personally have made a serious commitment to try to stay clean as of recent again just because I'm not happy and I don't feel good and somethings got to give. Right now for myself I know there are certain things I probably should and shouldn't do but we are all different people with different likes and dislike, have different experiences growing up and all need different things at different times and you know what I'm totally okay with that I don't want us all to be the same.... that sounds like a bunch of robots. We're all just trying to make it and i have no judgement how you or the next person gets by as long as you are not violating another person's health/safety (especially kids that's just my big thing with drugs is the destruction of causes families and the horrid and sometimes inhumane shit so many innocent little kids are exposed to bC of caregivers being fucked up but there's more to that than just drugs....I know there are people who can work/ drive/ function fine on substances and I know some of the biggest monsters out there are total squares, there's always levels to the shit)
So what if she got high, I give money to homeless people and I don't give two shits what they do with the money, sometimes if I'm rich enough I'll give them money sort of knowing its for drugs and buy them a McDonald's or something else.

Whatever the charges might of been those men that were left didn't deserve the death sentence. Without a judge and jurors. Nice work on this piece. Very informative and once there has been destruction the news media doesn't like to focus to much time on things that are still a problem. It will take decades to get the city back to what it was. I pray for the victims that were left for dead.

Back in the day when I was constantly in trouble an in an out of jails this was always one of my biggest fears. A natural disaster happening. The thought of being trapped in a concrete cell with no means to eat or escape if water levels started to rise..that's a scary thought and whoever allowed this to happen needs to be charged to the fullest extent of the law. SMH.

I know a few people who where in that jail during Katrina one person was in tears telling me how they had the inmates in Water up to their neck while wearing shackles trying to Evacuate and the Guards left lots of people to drown

I just got sick from the mold just watching this. I'm praying for the homeless people in there to get their lives right and get out of there and never have to go back to an unsafe and unhealthy place.

@@joannacruz9818 they do. They were talking about being sick and talking about the mold. They don't live in an area like we do where there was a time we had to live in a tent and it was safe. They can't just put up a tent in the woods and go to and from their camps without worrying about alligators and other wild things. It's pretty sad. There's tons of jobs up here in Illinois now. Lots of people lost their way and either can't or don't want to find their way back and they don't have the strength to deal with people anymore so they're just hoping without action.

I was part of the first team to enter back into new Orleans the day of the hurricane search, rescue, recovery, and rebuilding from day one. Spent two years there rebuilding. I saw stuff you would never in your life believe.

Yes they were abandoned and then they rescue some by boat. And I believe the 517 is mostly the death count not just missing.

Now touching on the basis of this video, I have to wonder what happened to the 500 missing inmates. How awful for the inmates that remained behind. Of course, it would be the last place people would come to rescue. How sad for our society. Thanks guys for being real.

I can’t believe the Staff had to leave the prisoners and they drowned. I don’t think I could’ve done that. I thank the nurses for putting those patients to rest before they had to die and suffer alone. Great video guys, it seem like a Really scary place. Even just watching the video I get the feeling of extreme sadness and evil.
They didn't have to leave them they chose to. They could have bussed them beforehand to other facilities in other states. They could have even moved them up a few floors they chose to do this.

As some who had been homeless for several years- I wholly appreciate people like these men that see someone hurting and genuinely want to help. It breaks my heart seeing that woman all alone. Being on the streets as a woman is so hard, I could only imagine what she might had been thinking.

This is so creepy, but fascinating at the same time. I lived in New Orleans for 4 years with my than boyfriend David (from Rochester, NY). He got arrested at a ball game for a fight. And I remember him staying in this actual jail until I could come and get him.

I don't know where he got his info from but 500 inmates did not drown. I'm born and raised and I'm still living in and work for the City of New Orleans. Also the inmates weren't left behind, I know guards and inmates that been there.

New subscriber, I went thru Katrina….. it was hell in South Louisiana during that time. The sound of the military helicopters day and night overhead was chilling. They finally called in Warden Cain (at the time he was over Angola) and his crew did get the prisoners gathered up and to a safe encampment.

Hearing all those bugs flying & knowing it was flooded from a hurricane and that it has mold everywhere makes me feel awful for the homeless living there. I have bronchitis and can’t have a lot of dust in my house without it affecting me. I’d be so sick and the the HORRIBLE HOMICIDE that basically happened to those people left behind would be enough to keep me out. I pray for all of New Orleans that they finally properly & fully recover from hurricane Katrina. What really trips me out is the fact American officials stick there nose in other countries business when states like this in our home!! Need our help.

Another random fact: When you go through the academy, they take your academy class through there on a tour to show you what it looks like now and tell you what happened(if you don’t already know) in what they say is a way to do better and never let it happen again. That along with to show how “good” the inmates and deputies have it now since the $165M facility was built and opened around 2014-2016(can’t remember the exact year, but it was new when I went through the academy in 2016).
If they knew a hurricane was coming why did they keep prisoners locked in the basement? It's like they knew they were going to die down there. The sheriff responsible for that will face the grim reaper when he passes away if he hasn't already

Unfortunately the criminal justice system 👀 at something like that as doing a favor to the world regardless of the fact that you are supposedly innocent till proven guilty in a court of law then you are still locked up and forced to prove your innocence so really you are guilty till proven innocent otherwise why would you be in jail fighting to prove your innocence

Prison should be demolished, removed period. People can be abducted and kept there. It's unsanitary and very unsafe.😒💯 They'll probably find some of the missing underneath, dead of course.
