    I got a better way in general. Look up the "engineer design process" but to simplify it, goes Define, Think, Find, Refine, Select, Do, Test, Improve. Most of the time you will find this process as a circle. It's more like a web in actuality where you can start at any step in the process and you can come back to any step when needed.

      I tried to match some of the definitions to ship design.
      Define - What is the purpose of this ship?
      Find - Find Ships that serve this purpose
      Refine - Find, Test, Refine different designs
      Select - Select a design for your ship
      Do - Finish the first version of the ship
      Test - Test the ship, if it's cargo ship see how much weight it can carry and how long it can travel. If it's a fighter try it on a PVP server or go against the game's AI ships.
      Improve - Improve the ship. Add more details, redo parts of the ship. If the ship cannot support it's weight or is too slow, add more engines. Terrible range, add more fuel or batteries. Consider additions to the ship including medical bays, warp drives, backup systems, an antenna, maybe a remote control so you could call the ship to you.

      @@radproturtle8066another tip I have for shipbuilding, you can test your blueprints any time in creative before bringing it to survival. It won't give you an exact reading on it's fuel level, but this is a good tip for making sure parts like pistons, rotors, drills, welders, etc. are working properly before utilizing a ton of materials to make the final blueprint. What I do is I design the ship in Creative, test the functional components in creative, finish out the rest of the ship design, save blueprint, bring it into my world I named Test.Survival, test it's fuel efficiency, lift, and carry weight there as those are all altered in Creative to be like 10× the normal amount. If it turns out the Survival testing yielded bad results, return to the Creative world and figure out where I went wrong.
      As for how I build them, I downloaded someone's shipbuilding platform off the workshop and spent the time remaking it's blueprint in survival. It comes with a Projector you can set your blueprints to, along with a garage underneath with a place to store a rover as well as a projector down there so you can save your Rover's blueprint and utilize it for easy repairs.

    What i love about any kind of building in sandbox games is that. You start with a base shape, a brick. Add another brick. Modify that brick a little, detail that brick. And there you have it you got a beautiful brick mounted together.

    This is why I love this channel’s tips. It’s practical with an emphasis on the rule of cool. It’s not purely form over function, but it’s also not like, say, Luca the Guide’s emphasis on sacrificing form for function (no shade towards Luca, great tips for more competitive pvp survival, just too “economical”)

    • @AnonNopleb
      @AnonNopleb Год назад +2

      Couldn't agree more.
      There has been a heated discussion among some of the more popular builders on youtube some month ago, starting off with some guy ranting about Luca's ships and how non-"meta" and ugly they were in his view and the videos went more in a direction of personal offending the other side. That went back and forth for some videos with people just short of insulting each other in the videos and the comments. That just left me disappointed that this kind of community exists for this game as well.
      I'm very glad I then found Lunar who has a very moderate position on this topic and found a good balance with both function and form. Also, he strictly follows the most important rule, which is to be nice to each other.

    • @jacksonbarkerthebluehairedfox
      @jacksonbarkerthebluehairedfox Год назад +1

      @@AnonNopleb Oh yeah! That was Kelvera Engineering. He made a video about Luca pointing out how PVP focused she is and how she kept reviewing non-combat focused ships as if they were meant for battle. It was kinda like she was holding a civilian cruise ship up to the standards of a military battleship.
      However, the video was also a bit mean-spirited, with a lotta personal jabs at Luca and calling her a bad person for simply looking at the game in a different way. Kelvera plays SE to build beautiful looking ships (as seen from his Star Citizen ship recreation series) while Luca plays SE to maximize efficiency and fight other players. Both valid ways to play the game, but the issue come from when someone tries to tell the other how they should play the game.
      I think bottom-line: Space Engineers is a sandbox game that allows you to do and build whatever you want. There is no correct way to play the game, which adds to the beauty of it. When you build your ships, you shouldn't focus on if your ship looks the best or if it's the most efficient design in the world. What should be focused on is if when you take a step back and look at it, you can proudly say "Yeah. I built that."
      Build things that you'd be proud to show off to people. That should be the only standard you should set yourself to.

  • @GhostOfSnuffles
    @GhostOfSnuffles Год назад +9

    I'm the kind of person who prefers to build from the inside out. I'd let the functional blocks dictate the ships overall design. As a result my ships were often ugly at first but because they put function first they always worked perfectly for me to the point i'd keep the blueprints and improve on them little by little, adding some extra features or moving things around to give it a better looking design. Eventually i'd reach a point where i felt like the ship both worked and looked perfect. It was common for a ship to take 3 blueprints to reach great functionality and have 20+ blueprint iterations and take months for the aesthetics to catch up.
    My point being if you can't make a ship that looks good make one the works nearly perfect for it's intended use and you'll keep it around long enough to slowly make it look perfect over time.

    • @gabusdeux
      @gabusdeux 10 месяцев назад

      Only thing I gotta add, make sure the function you want isn't the only function it can do. It's all well and good if it can mine super well, but if a slight fall shatters the storage because you didn't put a bit of armor over it, or a single block breaks and separates the built in two, I don't think it's the best

    • @standardheat-fs8159

      I do it basically the same way. First I build storages (Cargo and Fuel), enough conveyor junctions and the Cockpit as well as Batteries, a way to charge them and Gyros. One of the most important things for me is to give it a strong enough Thrust to Weight ratio for it to work on as good as every planets gravity. The aesthetics will be finished last. And you got a point, I basically only improve the Designs that work and not the ones that only look good, because it’s easier (for me at least) to make a working ship look good than a good looking ship work well!

But also just general ideas of what i can do to make my ships look better or eventually i might actually make them look interesting. Working on this over built hybrid mining ship now. It can keep it self in the air with a full load (needs more brake thrusters tho) and i don't hate the design right now. If at least changed it from looking like a tear shaped bubble. Kinda looks more train like now but it's not terrible lol. Has a LOT of drills on it but i have this vision of making mechanical arms for the drills so i don't have to reposition constantly and it can haul a large amount of ore. Splitsie did a pretty good series of videos withe the internal components first method, both have their pros and cons. It's definitely easier to finish a ship laying out the components first but it's more likely to deviate from what you first envisioned. Building the frame first will lead to a lead of trial and error which is very valuable experience because of the challenge to fit everything you need and refit accordingly with iterations.
      I personally alternate between both depending on what's the initial purpose.

      Gave my idea a first pass, asymmetrical exploration ship. Fleshed out the frame and laid in the functional components. The frame needs to be shrunk by at least 50% though. I'm left with way too much room, and as a result the weight is 100,000 or so kg heavier than what it needs to be.
      Saved, and I'll take another crack at it tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation.

    On thing not mentioned in the video: build a ship with one idea in mind. For example, my interiors are crap, so to try and improve this, I attempted to build a ship based around the idea of a good interior. The ship didn’t look or function great, however, because I did this, I am now better at building a ship’s interior than before, obviously there is still room for improvement, but the lessons learned where worth the while. Not everyone can pull it off, but I'd suggest not being afraid of asymmetry. Having a ship that's heavy, longer, or larger on one side can look amazing if it's done right. Some of the most iconic ships in scifi have some elements that are almost out of sync with the symmetry of the design.

    Yeah, indeed they are well-made, more efficient in design and practicity, but, maybe for that reason, they all look the same.
    maybe because a 'good' ship have to fullfill somes features that make them prety similar to each other : a long seaship-like/cigar hull, some sort of detail, logical weapon repartition.

      @@LunarKolony Thank you bro! 🙏 also AMAZING video, straight to the point! I like how you didn’t just teach us specific techniques but SHOWED us how to find techniques we like on our own!! Way more valuable!! I just got back into SE after a long break and this video is inspiring me to make some awesome builds! Thanks again for the amazing content and cock and ball tips!!

    "try to build with other people".
    Me: runs SE on a pc with less RAM than the minimum suggested for it so it doesn't support public servers, is the only one playing this wonderful game in about an 80 to 100 km radius, has no friends and the few peers he knows think he's autistic or something, which at this point is probably true but that's not the point.
    It's a sad life.
    Thanks for the tips anyway, it's always a learning experience to watch your videos

    Yeah, I don't care about aesthetics at all. They're a luxury only. If there's opportunity without ANY impact on performance...fine. But aside from that, looks are at the bottom of the barrel.
    My functional ship will blow a good-looking ship out of the sky. And in the end, only the survivors matter. The dead are irrelevant.
