Just had to say, the walnut shell is not the fruit. The fruit is the fleshy part that rots away, and stinks. Same goes for hackberries. Their thin rind is the fruit (tastes like honey orange), covering the seed, which is comprised of the protective layer, surrounding the nascent plant inside. Only trees related variously like these, and oaks, have this kind of set-up. The "fleshy" part of the acorn is the cap, which dries off and falls away, leaving the protective shell, surrounding the tender inside. Oh, btw, one can eat the hackberry and sugarberry rinds, as well as acorn insides, if prepared properly. Anyway, just off on a tangent.
I seem to remember that when Adam Savage talked to the muppet people their was talk about different versions of the muppet babies that only occured as part of some other show (like it was a short segment in that show).
Yes, I do remember one example of it. In the Muppet Family Christmas TV movie (which is a seriously under-celebrated Muppet movie), they sit down to watch "old family movies" of the Muppet babies. It's a clip only about 5 seconds long that features puppet versions of the Muppet Babies. I spent my whole childhood assuming that Muppet Babies were puppets instead of a cartoon and had a weird Mandela Effect when I first saw an episode of the cartoon as an adult.
There are cat boxes that have trays, which normally collect urine on a paper absorber but take that out and it will just collect in the tray under the cat without the absorbing material.
Even if the tree is male, thats still adding to the gene pool of its modern counterparts! Some of the genes it has to share might be beneficial but uncommon or lost since it was created thousands of years ago
When I was a Boy Scout, I was told by Scout Masters to not pee directly on trees because deer would peel off the bark to try and get at the salt in the pee. Not sure how accurate that was, but the human pee NOT protecting seeds reminded me of that.
I have been a retail manager for 25 years, and would be honored to help you in that arena. Would be my dream to work for Complexly. (Only job listing is for a Latin American Expert)
Heirloom seeds are seeds from the days before we bred all the flavour out of fruit and vegetables and all the good perfumes out of flowers. And yes I am a grumpy old man in training.
What happen prior to the atomic bomb with how seeds and soil interacted? Meaning; was there a period of stunted growth or continuous growth with just molecular structure change from radiation fallout?
32:44 If people can get away with calling reanimated spider corpses robots, the seed delivery bundle is fine. I'm not a roboticist, but I do work adjacent to roboticists. Opinion is my own.
@36:35 Serious question: Is calling it 'piss' human specific? I feel like it's too casual to use when talking about non-humans. Though I would say that animals can be 'pissed off'
I want to know about seeds for assisted migration of trees (ie: getting seeds from southern members of a species population to germinate and plant further north or further up hill than they could naturally travel, to plant trees that are better adapted to changing climate conditions). Specifically, which trees are so programed for dormancy by day length that assisted migration wouldn't help, and which trees rely more on temp cues and should be migrated for planting?
Here’s my weekly comment to tell you and scishow team about how ALL Keokuk geodes are fossils . Also a new study found 15 minerals in ONE GEODE. I hope one of you reads the comments this week. I also finally found copies of the book Keokuk fossils and the species biopella. Which is like from the 1800s and they made the discovery and knew they were all fossils. But they didn’t know what the fossils were so they kept calling them sponges but if you literally just read the descriptions, they’re just describing horn coral and crinoids and braciopods. Like literally these are the geodes from the geode capital of the world. Definitely the geode capital of the United States and every single one is a fossil and people are just smashing them open having no idea and I swear to God I know from living there it’s some weird gatekeeping thing, maybe because of fossil regulations but for real like can someone please talk to me about this or someone in the comments who cares? Rant over see you next week!
I wouldn’t think the way the seeds are spread with the I-bots will not be easy to harvest because they will not be in a row like common mechanical seeding. Not as useful as one would think unless humans harvest.
It's not always about harvesting when cultivating seeds. The benefit of these bots is, that you can just throw a bunch of them out of a plane and the germination rate is much much higher than just throwing them out as seeds. This helps with reforestation in areas where you can't really go by foot or are just very remote. Of course youll always get better results when you plant in rows by hand, but that's not the usecase for these bots
I don't think it's that this isn't necessary enough, just that they all have careers in either academia or with scishow. It wouldn't really make sense to stop doing the things they like doing just for a podcast

Terrifying Tinkles: the game show where you figure out what peed and scared x animal
Sam starting the ad with a leading question but not warning the others you wanted them to respond with Hank's merch was hilarious.
Dr Hank Zeuss and his new series of science communicating children’s books. I like that idea, a lot
Dr Hank could be a revolutionary children's book series.
Clearly the pee quiz game should be called “Piss Off!”
Hahaha, “Hey Ceri, what is a seed?” set off Siri
😅 bet the answer wasn't as good
The "resident clone" thing just keeps getting me giggling every time
it's just lore at this point

For anyone curious, I'm 95% sure the critter Sam was thinking of at 26:35 is a camel spider.
Please publish a scischow tangets poetry book. We could call it The SciShow Poetry Book (the First,) or Scishow Poetry Book, The Great.
The SciPoetry Book!

no reason to be embarrassed, the muppets are great. and i believe that if you show passion people will react to your love of a thing.
I grew up next to someone who grew heirloom roses. The smell was amazing, but none of the stems were ever straight enough to cut as "long stem" roses.

Hosting a Muppet podcast = coolest thing ever!!! ❤️
Dope Poem! 🎉🎉🎉🔥🔥🔥
I love every other Tuesday lol
If Sam is resident every-clone, surely he is comparable by definition

What is Hank saying right before “not the tree” at 16:29? I’ve replayed and rewatched and tried with and without captions and I cannot figure it out
"People you gotta be careful if you look at 'em too long! The seed, not the tree."
Heirloom seeds are seeds from the days before we bred all the flavour out of fruit and vegetables and all the good perfumes out of flowers.
And yes I am a grumpy old man in training.
Nice try Monsanto
Hey, I remember the seeds that bury themselves, I watch it in a ZeFrank video. 😃
I think it wold be cool to have him as a guest in SciTangents
Really hope the next episode is entirely “what’s the pee for you!”😂
Can't wait for this one :)!
Love the show

many nsfw quotes in this episode

Where's the link for the muppet podcast?
@36:35 Serious question: Is calling it 'piss' human specific? I feel like it's too casual to use when talking about non-humans. Though I would say that animals can be 'pissed off'
Ain't no party like a Green Party... wait that's a thing already isn't it...
The name of the pee guessing game should be Piss Off
29:10 Sew your wild oats on Saturday night and on Sunday pray for a crop failure,!
RE: the etymology, there's also "seminary." Just don't think about that one too much.

Gastric seeds or G seeds!!!!li
34:05
39:25 LMAO
I'm going to use the walnut shell being a fruit if someone tells me that a tomato is a fruit (and not a vegetable)

@@derAtze ok. Was just giving another point of view.
cool
Go to Japan to get your kawai woodlouse plushie…
I am sad to learn that the income from this podcast isn't enough that you don't need full time jobs.
If its any consolation, at least Hank and Ceri's fulltime jobs are basically this is in more formal formats
I don't think it's that this isn't necessary enough, just that they all have careers in either academia or with scishow. It wouldn't really make sense to stop doing the things they like doing just for a podcast
Unfortunately, that's a reflection of how much our society values science.
39:26 and you even have a yt channel ready! @SciShowPee
Human pee doesn't scare them off. Dog pee doesn't scare them off. Clearly the authors aren't tenured.
I rly don't wanna offend anyone, but how did no one suggest "piss off" as the name for that game of which predator pee would scare away a pest? 😅
hank you have to support publishing negative results! 😉
Amo-
Nice try diddy
Hank, you can train your cat to use the toilet. 🤷🏻♀️
Why would you be embarrassed of the muppets? I was all excited about a muppet podcast but it doesn’t seem like Sam actually likes them, so I’ll pass.
37:30 what about cats? I have a litter box that the pee collects into a pad, you could remove the pad and just have a shallow pan of pee.
