    sam is so correct about rabbits. as a domestic bun owner, these guys are so silly even when they're trying to be scary. Like oh no your sharp teeth and claws! Let me just hold you in a towel instead as I clip your nails. or the legs - they have a lot of power and most of their "scary" capacity is sudden movements, but I've watched my bun scare herself silly repeatedly this week by stepping on her shallow cardboard box of toys and flipping it.

    I would argue that the land animals we eat most, chickens and pigs, are both omnivorous predators.

  • @Levacque
    @Levacque 2 месяца назад +1

    10:43 if anything, people used to assign HIGHER morality to predatory animals. Like, we related to other animals that were capable of killing. We saw our own martial tendencies in them and made cultural connections between ours and their behaviour because human leaders used to value violence so highly. We would use language like "lesser beasts" to describe prey animals. And we used association with predators to amplify the standing of powerful families by associating lions with nobility, foxes with cunning, for some examples.
    I think Hank has it backwards only because he's thinking with a modern mind, but back when predatory animals had a significant impact on everyday lives, they imprinted on us a highly impressive stature, and we considered predatory animals to be of the highest class below humans for many centuries (the phrase "King of the Jungle" comes to mind).

    Re: eating land carnivores, and Hank's example of polar bears - bears are one of the exceptions, although they're (typically) eating many more plants than meat.
    Polar bears are the exception; for arctic peoples, who by necessity have a very meat heavy diet (due to there not being much plant food). Polar bears are only treated differently from other aquatic/semi-aquatic mammals because there's kill caps for them, not because anyone's shy of eating them.
    Although I suppose since they're pretty darn aquatic, possibly that just puts them back into the way we eat fish.

      Right?? Also there are plenty of animals we traditionally think of as predators that kill an animal but then don't eat the whole thing, like a lion leaves some of the carcass and then scavengers come and finish it. Does that mean that under the definition they used, lions wouldn't be predators??

    I had an albino rabbit as a child - spitting image of the monty python skit. He lived in a huge fenced off area in our front yard and we would have to go in there in pairs because Charlie would circle you, charge when you looked away, and latch onto your ankle or hand and not let go until you bled. All other pet rabbits across my life were lovely, so it seemed to be a nature instead of a nurture thing. My friends who had an albino rabbit have similar stories of rabbit cunning and evil.

    I feel like the way she described predators was extremely redudent. Ig the word predate could literally imply to everything alive everybody and every organism is getting nutriants from somewhere and predating on something. I feel like when most people talk about predators they are talking animals at the top of the food chain. Nobody refers to deer as predators because they eat leaves lmao. or bottom feeders as predators because they eat algae if anything they are extremely more likely to be eaten. I love this podcast, but she took that question way too literally. Im pretty sure the point of this pod cast was apex predators, not birds eating seeds😂
