@@kaliyahmobley9132 hey i’m 4 weeks into my starter loc phase and they’ve started to bud, i’ve decided to get soft locs over my starters. my location recommended no longer than 3 months but i’m really nervous about my hair matting together sooner than that.

Started my locs two days ago. Gave up on the weaves. My hair use to come down to the bottom of my neck, now it's to my ear. Trying to get use to it. But I'm dedicated to the process.
I’m 9 months loc’d I wore protective hairstyles 3x thus far. The first time I was 2 months in and I don’t recommend because my locs unraveled. The 2nd time I did faux locs over my locs. That style was too heavy and I removed those faux locs quickly. Last month I did boho box braids and only kept that style in for 1 1/2 weeks because I missed my locs. I also agree with you that those styles should not be in for a long time as well you shouldn’t do them often. I love the freedom of having my locs out.
I did soft locs over them twice . The first time it was ok , I had the hairstylist take them out so I didn’t realize how much they intertwined with my locs . The second time tho babyyyyy it took me over 5 hours to take them down , my locs became one with the soft locs & I really saw how much they were damaged . I literally was crying as I took them down getting frustrated with the tangling . From then on I vowed to go through the process and love on my hair as it is . They’re now flourishing , I do feel like a few are thinner but I ended up combining them and all is well ! Take it from me , please don’t do anything over your locs . It’s not worth it
Yes! I did distressed locs over mines as well, and my head was aching for days. When I took them out, hair had combined with mines as well. I had to take tweezers to pull the fake hair out of my locs. 😩
You can get away with it 1-3 times of you’re not heavy handed and then after that the locs are going to start to get ruined. I did it to a client before. She really hated her locs which is probably why she kept wanting to cover them up. She was lazy on the maintenance so that s probably also why they didn’t look as neat.
When I started my journey I knew that this would be different and new territory for me. I decided I wasn’t going to hide behind “protective styles”. I want to embrace my locs and have the thickest, fullest locs possible. I barely even style them, but I do have a head wrap for the occasional rough day or two🤣🤣
Agree with the new territory. I’m officially a year locked and I started with free form locs. Got them separated and I must say all locs are beautiful and make you exude confidence.
I just started my locs yesterday and I love them but it makes me feel like my face is a little fatter because I'm used to having alot of volume in m hair. This video made me feel better. I just have to be patient
I've never put protective styles over my locs. But I have used headbands, satin lined caps, and wraps when I felt I needed to push through some awkward stages with a bit more confidence. Great discussion!
Omg same.. during my 10th grade year of highschool then was in zoom for my 11th grade school year. My hair is now down to my neck. Well the back of it lol.

I have braids over my locs now for the first time. I’m enjoying my braids but I will be taking them out in a few weeks because I don’t want to damage my locs and its growth. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for the advice! As a loc newbie 9 months loced now, I was contemplating getting some long faux locs over my locs since I’m going on vacation but I’m going to opt out. I’ll just wear my natural hair in a cute style!
This was sooo helpful! Two weeks into starter locs and looking for options that would not impact my journey! Love the idea of putting them back which looks gorgeous! Your and locs are beautiful by the way!
Today is my second month into my loc journey. I retwisted them last Sunday styled them, took the style down yesterday because I did it too tight and it was aching and sprayed them with water, and liked my scalp. Y'all, they look wild but I'm so in love with them as wild as they are, I decided to not style them after a retwist from now on for the next couple of months and just let them be. I can definitely tell I will have a beautiful set of locs again as this is my second set of locs, my first set was instant locs, they were beautiful too in their own way.
I started my locs December 2020 and just wore my hair out. I didn’t have an “ugly stage”. It got very frizzy but I made sure I maintained my locs and kept them protected at night and when I wasn’t out with a bonnet or cap.
Omg I started during quarantine... I'm 6 months in today 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 I definitely see trasitsition happening with them, but I jus want this stage to be over ASAP
I'm 3 months in. My babies are so thick & they are really taking off! I just spent $60 on soft locs because I was going to do a protective style.. wish I had seen this video first because that $60 could've went else where😆 I love to see the changes so I'm going to embrace them. I'm usually wearing wigs but chile it's too hot these days. Thanks for the video Queen❤️
Thank you!! I’m 3+ months into my journey and though I do not wear “protective styles” I do tend to pull my hair up or back a lot and I’ve noticed one loc is bent from same. Will let my babies be freeeee especially with the flexibility to do so at work! 💎
I totally agree. You don't need to put a protective style over a protective style. Locs are the best protective style. I understand why people want to use wigs and other synthetic styles in the beginning. I am struggling with my 8 month old locs. They still stick out and my hair has shrunken up ALOT. I can't put it in a ponytail anymore. But I just deal. I use alot of Bobby pins. 🤣
I think it’s less about ‘needing’ to do it. And more that people are understandably uncomfortable with the starter phase where Locs are typically short etc.😊
Gal!! u preaching to the choir! I lost my whole 1st set of microlocs to a protective style when the pandemic started. It hurt coz my loose hair was loooong😭😭I did a braid down and crotchet braids over it,and left it in for like 2 months😱😱😱 i was working in the hospital so I needed something to cover my hair......when I took them out, gal!!!!they were all married into each other, matted like 😖😖😖it was a done deal RIP...well,now I have my 2nd set and I am learning from my mistakes...thanks for sharing
This was such an informative video. I opted out of doing protective styles over my locs for the first year and I’m happy to hear that it may have helped. Thank you for making this.
I've started my journey from knotless braids 🥰 they really don't do me nothing really for me my hair is growing there is no form is thinning but what I dont do I dont twist them I just let them grow out naturally they longest I've leave in a protective style for was 2 months I just dont retwist the roots because that for sure was damage your roots .. I have box braids over them right now I'm deciding to go about 6 weeks with them and then let they be think I wanna do a color next but from hair waxs ... but I love my protective styles I also do love my journey and I do embrace the journey
The protective style always grow my hair , more than just not having anything done to it , I mean it make it skinny but they thicken back out once I wash my hair
Love these videos on your channel bcoz you care about the formation of the locs. Your video about not wearing loc jewellery while your locs are young helped me so thanks. I hadn't had jewellery at the time of watching your video on that. I put loc sprinkles in for a week and quickly snipped them out coz of the loc jewellery video and coz my locs showed signs of shooting a couple of weeks before. This video is also important.
i’m 2 months in my loc journey and so far this is my second time getting twists over locs, i planned on keeping this set on longer to see more growth but i guess i’ll keep it in for a month or so just to get my moneys worth… i am a teenager and my locs aren’t the longest so i am pretty self conscious- any tips on like confidence during the starter loc phase?🙁 my locs are so pretty but idk
Now I wanna take my Marley twist down, I’ve had Marley twist over my locs since I had my daughter about a month ago just so I could look somewhat kept while I got use to being a mom... I’m about 9 months into my journey, I have I haven’t messed myself up!
I’m going to do Marley twists over mine. I don’t plan on keeping them forever and my hair is very thick so I’m ok with experimenting. This is my 3rd loc journey anyway.
I'm at a point where I'm really starting to fee really ugly...like I don't feel confident or beautiful at all. My locs look wild and I'm really sad a protective style isn't the best option for them. Just wish there was something I could do
On those days I would recommend wraps! I love e good kente wrap, hoop earrings, and a nice lipstick! It is not always easy but hang in there, it will be worth it! Worse come to worse, you can look into instant locks
@@daelocs I've already started my loc process so I'm not sure what the transition to instant locs would be. My hairs just at an awkward stage and I felt the same way loose natural. I bought some wraps and earrings so hopefully I can start to incorporate them in my looks.
@@spicytrinity pretty good actually! They've grown a lot and decided to cover them for about a month after posting this! Helped keep them protected as they budded
I love my locs how it is but I also love Havana twist 😩. Mine is tangled with the twisting hair and I don’t know how to undo it. I guess it’s apart of me now. 🤷🏾♀️
Definitely did this throughout my starter stage. It damaged my locs by not fully letting it breathe and mature properly. My locs got thin each time I did it. Now I'm trying to find a way to repair my hair.
Same Sis...Im trying to find a way to repair my hair and its hard finding information on how to do so. Please share any regimes or ideas you've been using!
@@dab1112 yes it did, especially at the roots because they are still maturing and developing. The extra weight from the added hair caused lots of damage from the tugging. Essentially acting like a weight on the locs, even if the style wasn’t “tight” Locs take a while to show damage, so you may not see it immediately, but time always tells.
I will suggest, if wearing your hair wrapped up you should probably place a silk scarf on before hand. Certain materials, such as cotton if worn most of the time… can severely damage the hair
I wear protective styles but for me that’s just wigs and I get the actual locs braided and keep a cap on it. I keep my hair oiled and sometimes wrapped
Sis, you are not lying! I learned that just now. Took down 1 month “fresh” knotless Havana twist and my hair was pisses. I could hear my hair! She woke me up at 6am and told me to take it out! My hair was merging.
I agree that it damages starter locs and compacts mature locs also. Any tension on my loose natural hair caused breakage so I'm not adding anything to my locs. My hair is thickening, growing, thriving so I don't want to hide my hair any longer.
This was very helpful, I almost did soft locs over my locs. I’m 4 months in so I think I still qualify as being in the starter stage and I definitely don’t want to damage my hair. This is my second time trying locs on my hair and the first time was bad because I wore a lot of wigs in the starter stage so I ended up cutting them off. I want to do better with my hair this time around. You definitely saved me a headache later on down the line and you saved me some money too 😂
Me personally I don't like short hair I am enjoying my journey on my locks but I will say I do put my wigs on top of it when I'm at work because I don't want it to get dirty and my hair is very very dry I don't know if this is good what can I put in my hair I'm literally pulling my hair apart because it matt so bad are they supposed to be dry I can put grease in my hair or oil in my hair and the next day my hair is very dry so I put the wigs on to make it moist
I’m often so curious of this and I’ve heard my sister speak on this before cutting her locs and it’s nice to hear someone else with experience share the possibilities of damage. I’ve been so tempted but my hair is already fine so maybe not haha...just embrace them
What can you make a video on how to train your hair to drop because my hair grows upwards and I be pulling it down and putting products on it trying to train it to fall downward but it's just so frustrating right now
Try water training your hair, water is true moisture for hair and of course you noticed the length difference when you wash it or when it gets wet. The longer your hair gets the more it with weigh down on it own
@@TorTheWeirdo I know you are going for positivity but take it from someone who is 4 months loc'd with a bird nest on her head... Starter locs are not cute 😭
@@tamaradogubo you see a bird’s nest while the next person may see beautiful fuzzies. It’s all about perspective. My starter locs were gorgeous. Nappy, frizzy, and wild but still beautiful.
@@TorTheWeirdo it’s not the locs that makes the person. Your starter locs are only as cute as your confidence. You couldn’t tell me nothin when I started out and I was bald bald 💅🏾💁🏾♀️
I don’t like having my locs down. Ironically cause the goal was growth 😅 But they’re starting to thin where I have the pony tail in 😭 idk any styles that let them breathe and not be in my face 😩
I decided to rock my twists and just keep them down and I’m glad I did, I get so many compliments on my hair 🤗✨ and I like that I can watch my hair change over time ☺️
I will endure the process. The point of locs for me is discipline. I see my locs as planting seeds and waiting until they blossom into a beautiful flower. I styled my hair after my 1st twist and my lotician told me to leave them alone to not style until after they loc.
Same boat I’m in just got them done in coils and it’s tough so I’m trying to do barrel rolls next retwist to keep them in for longer due to the texture of my hair
Hey Dae!🤗🤗🤗I absolutely love your channel. I just started my locs about a month ago and I bought about 9 wraps😆😆😆because on a regular day I ain about that life😩😩😒😒faffing around with my hair then , now or never!😂😂😂 So Yh when I saw you said that “protective” style doesn’t exactly protect your locs, but Yh I wanted to braid it a bit but I’m wrapping it up. Thank you so much for the advice.😉😉❤️
Started my loc journey Sept 2020. There is no issue with hair appearance in my previous or current job; however I made a commitment to my self to not style for a year. Just recently I opted to get a style 6mos into my journey a pinned up style. This time I opted for the two strand twist on my locs. I think i will stick to the 2 strand twist since there is less manipulation..... Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Was LOCed for about 4 months nd I put some butterfly locs over them when I took them out I ended up cutting one of my own locs so hurt..I'm 9 months in now thinking about putting some braids hopefully it won't damage my hair or be hard to remove
I'm 3 months into my journey and I leave mine alone, other than wrapping it up at night. It's coming up on the summer months and I know swimming is a no no.
I just made a month this on 4/10/21. We are still in CoVid so I'm fortunate enough to let them do their thing while I'm working remotely. I prefer to wear them out if I go anywhere. I have a few headwraps too

Maybe I’m lucky because I wore protective styles first 2 months into my locs and now I’m about 7 months and my locs look fine. And I still wear wigs and braids. But I take it out after month. But I always did that before locs anyway. I’m just tired of these locs they are boring me. I just got a retwist last week and booked some braids for this Saturday 😂. I prefer braids and weave but I’m trying so hard to stick to this. My locs don’t look bad but they just don’t fit my style.
I’m 2 weeks into my loc journey and am contemplating doing braids or short soft locs for my Vegas trip, but I think I may just do wraps instead. I don’t want to deter my loc journey. 😭
When I got my locs started in 2014 I wanted to cover my locs up with a hat but as the years when by I changed my mind and let my locs grow and be what they are today.
Hello Dae love your videos...could you tell me how many times a day you spray your hair? I just started using rose oil and olive oil in my spray bottle today and it smells good and i can definitely feel the difference...and can you suggest a good silk cap?
My locks are four months now but I don't know the exactly I should take care of them....like in what duration am I supposed to wash them and when should I make them new/relock
What I’m looking for and I think every other starter loc (civilian) is looking for is….” Should I leave my Durag/ cap on for the 2months period as much as possible?”
I’m 18 months into the journey and have always had protective styles(braids) for months.💔💔my locs are like so thin now , I’m tempted to cut and restart😔
8mos in haven’t worn anything over my locs not a wig or anything… I’m gettin some knotless braids… hopefully my hair will be ok… but I need something different.. atp it’s a risk I’m willing to take.
I just had braids over my locs. I took them out and my two corner locs thinned at the root. I dont even know what to do wit them. Ive just left them for my hair to continue to grow. Maybe itll be easier for me to add some of a loc extension to it when the thinning is in the middle. Im just hoping they wont fall out before then.
I don’t understand why people do this . Your locs arent locs yet and they are forming . What u do to your locs is how they will look . You are better off putting on a slap for real bad hair days . I have two . It’s a light skully with satin on the inside . Hair needs to breathe though . Also I don’t even remember the ugly stage with my first set. I think it’s because I dyed my hair a month before I got them . The “ugly stage “ wasn’t so ugly .
I am three weeks into my starter locks, some of my locs have become unraveled. I would like to color my locs as well. When would be a good time to retwist and to add color?
I'm gonna cry seeing all these faux locs damage my real locs. My graduation from high skl is week after next week and I wanted to do locs over my microlocs but I am terrified that it's going to damage my hair I really am. Next month is gonna make my 6 month mark and I'm just scared of doing something knowing that there's a high chance of it damaging my hair....I think I'm just gonna do knotless braids....what do you guys think.
Have you noticed a change in your locs with the protective styles?
Never thought to get a protective style on my semi free-forms got on my loc journey October 2019 ✌️
LOVE YOUR LOCS. I’M 14MONTHS IN MY LOC JOURNEY. HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND.
10+ years locd never had protective styles, just recently started a new loc journey but I agree with everything said in this video!
The protective style always grow my hair , more than just not having anything done to
it , I mean it make it skinny but they thicken back out once I wash my hair
I like my locs down more now than at the beginning I wanted styles
Now I wanna take my Marley twist down, I’ve had Marley twist over my locs since I had my daughter about a month ago just so I could look somewhat kept while I got use to being a mom... I’m about 9 months into my journey, I have I haven’t messed myself up!
I’m going to do Marley twists over mine. I don’t plan on keeping them forever and my hair is very thick so I’m ok with experimenting. This is my 3rd loc journey anyway.
Great advice as usual and I love the color your red faded into
Thank you!!
@@onli6094 it’s been a year, how’s ur locs looking?
@@spicytrinity pretty good actually! They've grown a lot and decided to cover them for about a month after posting this! Helped keep them protected as they budded
I really liked my starter locs especially they started budding it does take getting use to!
Hello Dae. Thanks for sharing this. I've often thought all protective styles AIN'T so protective. I'll be careful what options I choose.
I love my locs how it is but I also love Havana twist 😩. Mine is tangled with the twisting hair and I don’t know how to undo it. I guess it’s apart of me now. 🤷🏾♀️
😭✊🏾
Definitely did this throughout my starter stage. It damaged my locs by not fully letting it breathe and mature properly. My locs got thin each time I did it. Now I'm trying to find a way to repair my hair.
Same Sis...Im trying to find a way to repair my hair and its hard finding information on how to do so. Please share any regimes or ideas you've been using!
@@LiaHarbuuyour hair would thin out doing protective styles ?
@@dab1112 yes it did, especially at the roots because they are still maturing and developing. The extra weight from the added hair caused lots of damage from the tugging. Essentially acting like a weight on the locs, even if the style wasn’t “tight” Locs take a while to show damage, so you may not see it immediately, but time always tells.
Did u notice thinning from doing styles without added hair?@@LiaHarbuu
This video is sooo on time for me 🙏🏾
I will suggest, if wearing your hair wrapped up you should probably place a silk scarf on before hand. Certain materials, such as cotton if worn most of the time… can severely damage the hair
I so agree! I do not like to see styles or overly twisting on starter locs. They'll thin quick.
You definitely saved me a headache later on down the line and you saved me some money too 😂
Iv been so afraid too put anything over my loc's..im 15 months in and im still afraid to dye it..
Better safe than sorry! Lol
Good to see you Daelocs. As usual good advice and good looking locs.
The longer your hair gets the more it with weigh down on it own
It’s easier said than done at times . Starter locs aren’t cute. 🙋🏾♀️ I’m just saying. Thank God I finally have a little length to be creative🤷🏾♀️
All locs are beautiful
@@marandarandall1314 you meant to reply to @Honest000w
I’ve been Loced for 4+ yrs(I was extremely tender headed before Locs) I rarely style my Locs😥😥
I wore a wig until my locs took. I wore wigs for a year
I don’t like having my locs down. Ironically cause the goal was growth 😅 But they’re starting to thin where I have the pony tail in 😭 idk any styles that let them breathe and not be in my face 😩
I decided to rock my twists and just keep them down and I’m glad I did, I get so many compliments on my hair 🤗✨ and I like that I can watch my hair change over time ☺️
I wear a wig every now and again but for the most part I’ve been wearing my locs out. I started in November...
Hi,
Love ur video.please what type moisturizer do you use on your hair? Ur dread color looks great too.❤May I know the color number please.
I will endure the process. The point of locs for me is discipline. I see my locs as planting seeds and waiting until they blossom into a beautiful flower. I styled my hair after my 1st twist and my lotician told me to leave them alone to not style until after they loc.
It's either do protective style or keep messing with my hair when stressed & keep taking my twist down before they can loc.
I also chose two strand twist. I love them.
I did a crochet afro over my locs. It was over a wig cap. It pulled a little. But I didn't keep the look in long. It was only once though. Never again
I love your videos.
Would love to know what colour you have on your locks looks so beautiful.
I just made a month this on 4/10/21. We are still in CoVid so I'm fortunate enough to let them do their thing while I'm working remotely. I prefer to wear them out if I go anywhere. I have a few headwraps too
i’m 2 months in my loc journey and so far this is my second time getting twists over locs, i planned on keeping this set on longer to see more growth but i guess i’ll keep it in for a month or so just to get my moneys worth… i am a teenager and my locs aren’t the longest so i am pretty self conscious- any tips on like confidence during the starter loc phase?🙁 my locs are so pretty but idkkkkk😢
It sounds like it’s ok for that one trip but maybe don’t do it again within the year
I want to restart my locs. I've had mine since 2004. They have shorten and thinned. What advice would you give?
I needed this today! Thank you! 🙋🏾♀️
I wear a silk scarf everyday ever since I started my locs march 26th. Is that okay? I feel like that's only way to keep my hands out my hair.
Silk scarfs are great
8mos in haven’t worn anything over my locs not a wig or anything… I’m gettin some knotless braids… hopefully my hair will be ok… but I need something different.. atp it’s a risk I’m willing to take.
Hey Jessica, how did it go? Considering the same for a short trip. Will only have them in about 4 weeks.
Same happened with my locs...braiding over my locs was huge mistake. But after being on a Loc journey for 10 years; I just wanted a different look...
Damn I’m scared to take my braids out now 😭
My journey is just one month old,and I'm getting so discourage already, cuz my hair is soo full of dandruff and makes hair not so pretty.
Can we see a pic of your first set of Locs?? You’re beautiful btw.. 🥰
Do you think a light style such as passion twist would be good after a month of starting locs ?
I'm gonna cry seeing all these faux locs damage my real locs. My graduation from high skl is week after next week and I wanted to do locs over my microlocs but I am terrified that it's going to damage my hair I really am. Next month is gonna make my 6 month mark and I'm just scared of doing something knowing that there's a high chance of it damaging my hair....I think I'm just gonna do knotless braids....what do you guys think. Can somebody please advise me
Dae did you do any maintenance to your locs like trimming to get them to not fuzz at the ends or is this how they naturally formed
Hey! This is how they naturally formed.
Faith Lane would you mind sharing what happened with your first set. I'm thinking of instant locs too.
@@wrkingldy no problem. I don't have instaLocs though. I do know that sometimes when getting them your locks can grow out flat which is something I don't hear alot of people talk about
Where can I purchase some good wraps from?
I'm loc'd 2 yrs and I'm getting bored? I want a change? I'm thinking about loc extensions...
i’m 6 months in and i have thick hair . i think my hair will be fine
I started my dreads from box braids 💯😍
Almost 3 years of locs and they are almost to my back💯😍
New subcriber..thanks for this video im just now becoming a dreadhead...
