I never paid attention to the Saturn Sky, because I thought it was a cheap, low quality option for people who couldn't afford a Corvette... until I drove this one. BOY was I wrong.

I got a low miles and garage kept Redline last summer. Most fun car EVER!!! After tax return I'm getting upgrades on the turbo, intercooler, exhaust and a tune for it. It should be a riot!!

Couple interesting points about designer Franz von Holzhausen - he later went on to Tesla to design many (all?) of their models. You may also remember him as the guy with Elon on stage who threw the metal ball at the Cybertruck window and broke it. He also bought an LS7 powered Sky for $50k from bringatrailer a few years back.

Oh no way! That’s awesome. I clearly didn’t delve too far into researching him 🤣

Terrible comment...what makes a name "American"? Unless you are Indigenous, there's no integrity in that comment. I get it that you're being quippy and clever, but language matters.
Also, I'm current owner of my 2nd Solstice (LS2V8 Mallet version, previously had a stage II turbo 2.4L) and many of your critique comments are really over-played...the car has given me great personal pleasure and continues to. I race (autocross and time attack), I tour (with luggage and bicycles), I even tow my trailer full of trash to the landfill with my Solstice. Much of your critique is unfair and lacks imagination. However, there's no bad press as they say, so thanks for posting.

It’s a Shame, GM Dropped this car. Rode in one, and got to go over it, was an amazing car. Unfortunately for myself, I needed help in and out, do to my height and bad knees.

FYI, the big hump in the truck is the fuel tank. Don't put any holes in it.
Note, before closing the truck, push the top all the way down inside.....
Changing the charge pressure sensor and doing a little reprogramming, you get 300 HP + out of it, no problem.
The stock turbos are undersized, and start to run out of blow above 5500 rpm, but swap the turbo with a larger one, and it will pull full boots all the way to redline.

Everyone talks smack about plastic interiors. Show me a car from the past 40 years that has a dash made out of anything but plastic. Or even one that looks appreciably different to the point that you can say: "ah...now this is great plastic...much better than that other plastic." The styling is actually not that bad in these cars.

I have a solstice GXP. I bought it for a cheap fun way to learn to drive stick with intent to sell it later. I didn’t mean to fall in love with it.

I don't think you placed enough emphasis on this car being RWD. How may manual, RWD coupes can be found at that price point?

    • @TopherParkerCars
      @TopherParkerCars  8 месяцев назад +3

If it was front wheel drive I wouldn’t have referred to it as a sports car 🤣

The only other comparable configuration I can think of is an S2000, and you’re paying twice as much for one with 150,000 miles.

One of the reasons why GM used infinitely variable seat back adjustment is because the increments of a ratchet tooth adjustment would not have been satisfactory because of the lack of room. Taller people could bring the seat back up so that the seat can go further back, leaving more room for those long legs!
Another thing, roll down the windows before putting the top up or down. The rubber gaskets on the top like to grab the window glass, which is why you had difficulty.
The car is purely American (US). It was styled, engineered, and manufactured only in the USA by UAW union workers. It was one of the few designs that emerged in production looking very much like the concept car at the Detroit Auto Show in 2002. The expected production quantities did not warrant the investment in robotic automation, so the car is hand welded (no robots). This decision was also influenced by the fact that the central tunnel was too confining for robot welders. A lot of hand-work body panel fitment was required in assembly.
There was some discussion in the beginning about creating this car as an entry level Corvette. There is speculation that this is why the frame members in front are easily adaptable to the GM V8 engine. However, GM did not want this car anywhere near the Corvette on a showroom floor. You can see why! It's amazing that GM even allowed this car to be produced. It was championed by Bob Lutz, who put together an incredible enthusiastic team to make this car a reality.

I have 2 ‘08 Redlines and a C5 z06. The Skys are easier and more fun. Both Skys have the GMPP upgrade for more boost and 290+ hp. The Z06 also has significantly more power. Note: the most power is not necessarily more better. Yes it’s a parts bin car but really really fun to drive. Work on cutting the whiney tone and fake accents. And no, it doesn’t need a 6 speed because it’s loaded with low end torque it’s not a high revver. Getting a performance tune, free flowing exhaust and 1 inch lower springs. Taking 1 inch out of the ride height makes it a Miata fighter, complete handling upgrade. You can almost see it in the stock ridiculous gaps between the tires and fenders. Massive improvement in looks and handling.

At the last auto cross in Kansas City, I had the only sky. and there was only one Solstice. A lot of folks didn't even know what it was, and a lot of the younger folks had never even seen one before, anywhere!

15:22 it shares the manual from the Hummer H3 which Toyota used. Also, this car is basically a lighter, RWD 2 seater Cobalt SS turbo, it’s crazy. And the design is an offshoot of the Opel Speedster which similar to the Lotus Elise.

I own (as 2nd owner) a 2007 Redline automatic (bought it with only 11,700 miles on it, so practically a "new" car when bought in Fall 2014 as a second owner); now it has about 50,000 miles on it since I use my Sky Redline as my 2nd car (except I don't drive it during the winter months due to it being a rear-wheel drive). It's gray exterior with the red-and-black leather interior ! I plan on keeping this car until I can buy "collector plates" on it (at age 25 years old). With the American car industry pushing "electric cars," I'm not thrilled with the future of the American automobile. It only gets about 22 mile-per-gallon in the city, but hey == it's my "toy" and I plan on keeping it so my grandchildren will appreciate what the American auto-industry used to sell (this car is the "end" of the era) !!

hey im just about to go into college, need a car. Bought a used 2003 wrx, unfortunately i haven't been able to drive it for months due to it being kinda cheap and beat up. I still want to drive a quick car, but defo gotta sell my car because i just wont be able to afford it going forwards. Any cool niche cars i can get for relatively low price and not be broken?
