Sadly this was Jim's last appearance where he could properly speak and walk as John Bardon suffered a stroke but appeared a few times and returned again as a regular in August 2009 but had to leave again May 2011 and sadly on the 12 September 2014 he died and Jim was killed off on the 9 April 2015
That was a retcon. As far as Max knew, it was always Jim, but then they switched it to Derek, probably because the storyline of the tension between Max & Jim was no longer valid after John suffered his stroke. When Derek reveals it was him on Xmas day, that was the first Max knew of it.
To clarify, that was 2012 that Derek revealed that "he was the one that did that", which was "to show Max who's boss", because "HE IS THE HEAD OF THIS FAMILY!"
Max was locked in a coffin as a boy. I believe in later years they had Derek take responsibility, probably because they never really played the story out properly, but I think that Jim was quite a harsh Dad to Max and if not physically abusive there was mental abuse for sure.

Jim used to be racist and he and his mates beat Max up and locked him in a coffin to teach him a lesson, Max was friends with a black guy.
