The Sainsbury’s advert is based on the true story. This actually happened at Christmas time in World war 1. The english and Germans came together for Christmas Day, exchanged presents and played football together. The next day, the soldiers did not want to fight each other but officers threatened to shoot any man who did not fight the opposition for desertion! It’s a well known incident. Shows the strength of love!

@Broken Native we ain't a socialist nation. The left would like us to be but fortunately for the rest of us they are the minority. The Irn Bru add is a spoof of the iconic animated film "The Snowman" which was based on the childrens book by Raymond Briggs. It's on every Christmas in the UK.
The song "Walking in the air" was originally sung by choir boy Paul Auty in the 1982 film. However in 1985 a new recording was made which reached No.5 in the UK charts and made it's singer, choir boy Aled Jones, a star.

So the Irn - Bru ad is kind of based on the movie the snowman, where the song walking in the air is from. Irn - Bru decided to make a parody of the song and the story. So as you can see this kid isn't sharing his Irn - Bru with the snowman and the snowman gets really mad so he takes his Irn - Bru and drops him. This is an iconic Scottish ad and it never changed until 2018 or 2019. Also Irn - Bru is a fizzy drink or as the Americans would call it "soda". Hope this cleared everything up.

Irn-Bru is a Scottish carbonated soft drink, often described as "Scotland's other national drink" (after whisky).Introduced in 1901, the drink is produced in Westfield, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, by A.G. Barr of Glasgow.
As well as being sold throughout the United Kingdom, Irn-Bru is available throughout the world and can usually be bought where there is a significant community of people from Scotland. The brand also has its own tartan. It has been the top-selling soft drink in Scotland for over a century, competing directly with global brands such as Coca-Cola.

Late on Christmas Eve 1914, men of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing carols and patriotic songs and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches.
The following day, British and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts. After Boxing Day, meetings in no man's land dwindled out.

The football match is true. Called The Christmas Day Truce, the advert was based upon written accounts from those brave soldiers who fought in the trenches. Here in Britain, the christmas advert is a huge thing here just like the christmas number one song in the charts. The Iron Bru soda drink advert video is basically pinched from a very traditional and much beloved Christmas short movie called The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, it was released in the 80s and even has a cameo by the great David Bowie at the very beginning.

Irn Bru - it is its own thing. Can't really compare it to anything else. You need the background of The Snowman animation (where you will have heard the song) and Irn Bru's advertising style to get fully understand it. Doing a Christmas advert in this way is probably the best demonstration of the Scottish sense of humour lol.

Just to explain the McDonalds ending Vanessa. In the UK Father Christmas comes down the chimney to bring presents for the children often put it large stockings left for this purpose . It is traditional to leave a mince pie and a drink for him and a carrot for his reindeer . The next morning most of the pie, most of the drink and most of the carrot are gone. Reindeer treats here are just an alternative to give the reindeer. The ad is using it as a mechanic to show the child within the adolescent in the same way the child within is showing the difference in reaction to his mum from when he was a child. Well that's how I read it :)

    The Irn Bru Ad..
I used to watch those movies when I was really young…
Also I think Sainsbury’s enjoys tugging at the heart strings.
    Edit: Sainsbury’s

They had to move troops around after the christmas truce and bring in snipers from elsewhere to start the fighting again.
Even when everyone went back to the trenches, they ignored eachother on patrols and pretended not to see any shots they could take and so on. It went on for about a week, then the generals relocated troops, made sure the enemy knew they were relocated, and fired sniper shots at the enemy trenches to make them think the new troops were firing.

Wow. I'd completely forgotten that amazing Sainsbury's Christmas ad from 2014. Vanessa, don't apologise for crying at that, you're not the only one. OK, so I'm an old softie, but that ad was amazing. Should have been made into a full length movie but then I would have been blubbing for an hour and a half!

Sainsbury’s 2014 Christmas advert is based on the Christmas Truce in 1914 the bar of Belgian chocolate featured in the advert sold out in Sainsbury’s Grimsby store where i worked at the time, i returned from my annual November visit to WW1 battlefields after paying my respects to local lads in cemeteries and commemorated on memorials in Belgium and France and laying a wreath during The Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate Memorial in Ieper Belgium to the advert and the bar of chocolate been sold in store. Just down the road from Prowse Point British Military Cemetery is a cross placed by The Khaki Chums a reanactment group in memory of the 1914 Christmas Truce. After the 1914 Christmas Truce both sides forbid any more fraternising with the enemy. There is a film called “Joyeux Noel” filmed in English, French and German and using British, French and German actors about the 1914 Christmas Truce filmed a number of years ago. The IRN Bru pronounced Iron Brew used scenes from The Snowman film made in the 1980s the song Walking In The Air sung by a teenage choir boy called Aled Jones (from Wales) who has released lots of albums since then.

The Sainsbury advert 2014 was the hundred year anniversary of the 1914 Christmas ceasefire that took place along various parts of the front line in WWI. Shows that underneath everything we are all humans that share the same simple wants and desires .
