ROGUES are SNEAKY, CHARMING, AND CUNNING. ROGUE BUILDS are very different between the two games. D&D 5E ROGUE BUILDS are balanced between exploration, social, and combat. BG3 ROGUE BUILDS seem to be more centered around combat. The ROGUE'S SNEAK ATTACK REQUIREMENTS have also changed between the two games. Which game has the BEST ROGUE BUILD? DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS 5TH EDITION? or BALDUR'S GATE 3?

“We’re not trying to be in combat! THATS WHY WE’RE SNEAKY!!”
Excellent point.
The delivery on that was just perfect. XD
Tbf on tabletop dnd, where you have a whole party, a rogue that is bad at combat and constantly hiding is a big liability, you can't always hide the whole party and usually everyone has to take the stealth test.
@@alexandresilveira6905 yes, a rogue that’s bad at combat it a liability, but that’s the same for every class. I would say that a rogue is for utility/scouting, and should not be in combat unless at least the tank is there too. If they can kill the opponent before initiative, obviously that doesn’t count as combat.
Sounds lame, this ain't splinter cell
@@alexandresilveira6905 It depends on the type of game you're playing. In a combat-focused campaign you obviously wouldn't want a PC who's bad at fighting, but a more exploration/rp-heavy campaign can be led by a full non-combatant party, and even a balanced combat/exploration/rp one has a certain margin of error for not combat optimized PCs.
5th Edition: You're not a rogue, you're an edgy guy who is quiet!
Just the quiet kid in class that occasionally brings a toy to school
whats the difference?
@@rossman8919 Rogues are good at stealing, infiltration, lock picking, disguises, con-checks, and blending in. While a quiet person is only good at being silent.
But isn't Astarion a rogue? I wouldn't describe him as quiet lol

No door is truly locked in the game when you're a rogue.
Not just doors. You can circumvent puzzles and all manner of stuff by picking locks

Or to a raging barbarian
Tell that to Karlach with adamantine sword
Or any character with slight of hand.
“You can’t say that, you are son to no one.” 100th use of that joke in this video and I still spit out my drink
I laughed outloud at work at the "You turned into your parents"

In BG3 you can activate sneak attack to ask if you want to apply sneak attack after you've already attacked something, its in the menu were your reactions are.
He doesnt know how to play video games. So I think this just go over his head lol
Yeah… pretty much all of these arguments fall flat. I know it’s a joke, but the bg3 rouges (except for maybe arcane trickster) are way more effective then dnd rouges.
@@Now_Its_Orange Assassin is amazing in BG3 and barely even a subclass in 5e (assuming your play with Surprise RAW).
With 2 Bonus Actions, I can Disengage, walk behind almost any enemy, re-Sneak, and Sneak Attack even though the enemy damn well knows what's about to happen.

I mean
To be fair, a Bard can do all the sneaksy stuff a Rogue can do, except probably better in BG3.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 Yeah, when I still only casually knew about BG3 stuff, I was really sure Astarion was a bard. Was very suprised when this brightly colored pretty boi was actually a rogue.
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 which is exactly why i respecced Astarion into bard ... frankly fits his background better too
The 5th E rouge just plain sucks so he attacks the BG3 one to hide his crappy mess.
Bard was originally a rogue subclass, so maybe
Let’s NOT tell him about mage hand ledgerman’s uselessness. It doesn’t work, so all you have is an invisible mage hand that can’t even pick up objects.
Yeah, Larian somehow made the strongest Subclass in the tabletop (Arcane Trickster) and the weakest (Thief) switch places in the power ranking. Especially once you do some multi classing, the Thief becomes utterly busted whilst the Arcane Trickster remains eh. But I guess that's what you get for trying to translate the subclass most reliant on creativity and rule of cool into a video game.
That's strange, it works for me.
@@SuperUnnamedplayer i think this is some sort of karmic balance for pulling the ranger out of the misery hole.
@@SuperUnnamedplayer "Arcane Trickster is the strongest Subclass in the tabletop" is not a sentence I ever expected to hear.
@@lyrlwestrum3971Very true.
Bard: you can’t say mean things and hurt someone’s feelings! That’s my job!
Tbh, Thieves getting an additional Bonus Action was fantastic. So many more things I can do with two BA instead of just one, especially when I can Cunning Action twice a turn now, or use the Illithid power to turn into a Displacer Beast and now have double the illusory phantom kitties. It was great.
Potions and items AOE splash also makes them an insane back up healer, since they can huck a potion and still get to attack, and still hide.
Tbf, he didnt say it was bad in the skit. The message of the skit isn't that rogue became bad... It's that the translation to a video game gutted most of the social/exploration tools that are normally one of the main reasons you play the class. The extra. Bonus action is very strong in combat. It just doesn't capture the original idea of theif
A little TOO fantastic. Any class that has bonus action attacks, like Barbarian or Monk, generally benefit MUCH more taking 3 levels of Thief-Rogue than the last 3 levels of their base class.
@@EmperorSteele 3 levels warlock, 3 levels thief, 6 levels paladin. you can smite spell > divine smite (yes you can do both in one attack) then do it AGAIN on your second attack thanks to the extra bonus action. blowing 4 spell slots in a single round but also absolutely destroying whatever you have targeted.
@@undeathghost5627 the only problem that Larian hit exactly into target auditory, which is mostly people who are not that much into D&D pure experience. Yeah, they cover the auditory, but they wanted to invite more people into the world. And who is good target for that? Generic RPG players, strategy players, etc. Social interaction is not a goal here. If they did go into something similar to neverwinter way with an option to modify the game, create custom scenarios, etc. yeah you could play around that and make rogue more rogue'y. But in current status, yeah I would say that rogue would sucks in a game, where you need rogue just to infiltrate and do 0 damage.
“Sonnuva-“
“Nuh uh, you’re a son to nobody”
“… aw”
Meanwhile "sneak attack actions" have a toggle so it functions like regular sneak attack lol
Yeah that's the part that got me, I was like "I have literally never once used sneak attack action on any rogue in any party"
5th Edition Rogue is burning BG3 Rogue so much that I'm surprised he's not on fire.
Hot like his parents
as a result of that bandit
raid that happened when
he was 10, caused by hobgoblins.
He takes no damage when succeeding dex saves.
You can see the bias here. BG3 Rogue is better almost every way. That extra bonus action is borderline op. It lets you hide, attack and than hide again, which isnt something a Rogue can normally do, and a myriad of other ways you can mix that, that makes them more Rogue-ish than 5e. And keep in mind that hucking items like potions can AOE heal your team, and you can still attack with your bonus action. So while hiding, you can pop out, huck something, Move, ranged attack someone, hide. The Gorilla tactics are crazy good. He must just be bad at video games.
Wizard: someone said FIRE?!?! FIREBAL-
everything is just freakin' annihilated
@@GreyfauxxGamingand there is your issue, the rouge is too combat focused in BG3. In DnD a rouge is okay in combat, but they are supposed to be focused on out of combat things. (Pick pocket, sneak through the dungeon to see what’s ahead, find and disable traps, diplomacy if you build them that way, using trickery on NPC’s.)
Holy shit, he tore him a new one.

Fun fact in BG3 you don't actually have to take the sneak attack Action to perform a sneak attack - any attack that meets the requirements of a sneak attack will automatically add the sneak attack to the damage
And only once a rounf, instead of once per turn
@@jakob3044that's actually a buff depending on the initiative order. Especially since you can sneak attack outside of your turn with reaction attacks
@@namethefifth7315 In D&D, you can sneak attack on reactions, because it can be triggered once per turn. In BG3 you can only use it on your own turn, once per round, so it is not buffed
Do the special arrows do sneak attack?
@@jakob3044 ok so after re-reading the rules for 5e here I have come to the conclusion that they are identical to that of bg3. First off in both games you can sneak attack as a reaction assuming you did not sneak attack previously to that and it recharges on your turn i had misremembered the rules from when i last checked. Though in dnd it is buggy in the fact that if you get sneak attack as an attack of opportunity before your turn that round it won't recharge until your turn. Secondly technically it is once per turn as that is what it states but I would need to do some testing in game to see how it works fully. And once per turn can be a buff depending on your initiative order because you could get your sneak attack earlier then you would otherwise if you get an attack of opportunity on an enemy earlier then you in initiative 1 which could mean the difference between taking a shitload of damage or killing a powerful enemy because usually boss monsters have high initiative scores so they will probably beat you initiative if you don't have alert
His parents were proud he was a rogue but left when they saw his stats
The rogue and ranger combo I played for my first playthrough of BG3 was soooo much fun to play
So you've played as Vex'ahlia?
@@Harex300 He played the infinite unknow ranger /rogues names out there, probably better built than that one.
@@neruba2173 Yeah Vex was built derpy. And wasnt a Gloomstalker. xD
An optimized rogue/ranger multiclass can be actually broken with the right build
@@GreyfauxxGaming Gloomstalker didn't exist when Vex was made. That subclass only came out nov 2017 while the first ep of campaign 1 was published on youtube jun 2015, it was live on twitch well before that and the home game started long before that. Also they played pathfinder, where all rangers can get pets (it's 1 of 2 options and the other one is super boring). So Trinket already existed before they even played D&D 5e. So really the only thing that made sense for her was to pick beastmaster, because that subclass let her keep her pet she'd been playing with for a while at that point. And there's no wrong way to built a character anyway, just the way you find fun. Not all people (I would argue most) care about doing the most damage. There is a lot more to a character. I've played 15th level characters that did 1d4+5 damage on an action. But was able to do a ton of other cool stuff.
Maybe BG3 Rogue is not a Rogue, but 5e Rogue surely is a Bard in disguise, given how many times they casted Vicious Mockery
Nah, the 5e rogue just picked up magic initiate and went for Vicious Mockery, because that is what BG3 made of his class.
I can't wait once we go into the casters. Especially Druid and Wizard.
I'm just BG3 player with very shallow knowledge of DnD, but these are insanely entertaining.

@@Nyarurin
It also just makes sense? As a wizard you have a book with all the spells you know? Why cant you access all the spells you know? In regular D&D.
Honestly, from tabletop experience, everyone I knew who has ever played as an assassin class has never, ever, used their infiltration expertise feat. One reason is that you don't have to play as an assassin class to have connections to create a false identity or official-looking certification.
Yeah its a terrible feature. Its clunky for the DM to try use, and it could just be done by anyone with criminal background. It's like giving you the feature to pee correctly into a toilet.
The level 9 and 13 abilities of Assassin are not just really hard to use, they overspecify things you can already do with forging tools and a disguise kit, as Lucious mentioned.
I homebrewed replacement features that focus on other tactics Assassin's usually go for like one that gets free poisons each day because of that.
Assassin rogues are, assuming your DM rules Surprise RAW, basically the Urchin background: the class.
Any character or monster that doesn’t notice a threat is surprised at the start of the encounter.
If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends. A member of a group can be surprised even if the other members aren’t.
^
Its more of a condition than a round, because if you kill someone unnoticed Initiative isn't even rolled. The Assassin could keep just going down the chain, till they are discovered or someone see's a dead body and now initiative is rolled.
@GreyfauxxGaming There's full rules for surprise (neither can be in combat, group has to pass a stealth check vs. opponents' perception), and you *might* get a surprise round once every 5 sessions or so.
So glad to see this series continuing! Great video!
By the end of that roast, the BG3 Rogue is as dead as their parents.
In BG3 rouge’s defense, it can do what I have always wanted to do in 5E… combat pickpocketing!
Since merchant NPCs only drop some of the most expensive stuff they have when killed, if you have to fight them then just take it all before the finishing blow! What are they gonna do, get mad and fight you? They’re already doing that!
I prefer to just use mods to keep all the items around after the merchant is dead.
How are you not getting stabbed to death you going through someone's pockets while they are fighting you?? How does that even work? Is something you after subduing them? Makes more sense if you pickpocketing a person that is engaged in combat with someone else.
@@PJDAltamirus0425
If you engage into combat with all your characters and then cast Invinsibility (or drink a potion) on your Rouge afterwards, then you can actually sneak up to the Enemy and pickpocket them.
Pickpocketing in BG3 works on the basis of dice rolls - you roll every time you try to steal an item.
So if you manage to roll successfully on all the Enemy's items, they will not know you are there and therefor won't attack you - they will keep focusing on your other characters instead.
@@TheCursedCat1927 Good point...... but why use such a valuable item for a end as banal as pickpocketing? The the I can see making any sense is stealing spell components from wizards. Looting the dead is a thing.
@@PJDAltamirus0425
I will start with this:
The whole point, is that you don't have to do this.
BG3 has tons of options like this one, that aim to fullfill the smallest of the players' personal fantasies.
The option exists literally just so you can use it, if you want.
As for "why" would anyone use it:
Pickpocketing brings up almost all of the items the NPC has in their inventory, with few exceptions (nothing specific - it's just a bit randomized).
That way, if you pickpocket a weapon from the enemy, they can't use said weapon in combat - same with scrolls, potions, bombs, etc.
This is purely a fantasy of "play however you want" and that's really all there is to it.
Astarion will always be on my team for his insane damage
I might be doing something wrong coz almost any character outdamages them
How much damage? Yes.
@@hussarini7811 Do you do assassin?
@@hussarini7811 For me only Lae'zel outdamages Thief/Assadin Astarion. What subclass you chose?
Agreed also karlach
That "why" is charged with pure hate and I love it
They turned the Rogue into a sneaky Monk. Also, "You turned into your parents!"😂
So….just a Monk then.
“And it’s a spell???”
“No, it’s a funny hat I put on and does all the work for me.”
0:24 You just need to switch on something on your character sheet, so the game will ask you if you want to apply a sneak attack on your current attack roll or don't.
Every class in BG3 can use items as a Bonus Actions, even in DnD 5th edition, most DMs allow the use of non-rogues classes to use specific items as a Bonus Action, since it is basically the core feature of the Thief Rogue subclass, it makes the feature kinda pointless so the implimentation of an additional Bonus Action was establised.
And with this feature at having 2 bonus action at just level 3 makes dual wielding a viable and strong fighting style. While in 5e, dual wielding looses it's value when your greatsword wielding Paladin reaches level 5.
Playing a BG3 Rogue just hurt my little sneaky soul. Sneak attack made absolutely no sense to me. I think I lasted until like... the 3rd major infiltration until I was like... NOPE, you make no sense. Fighter makes more sense the way Larian seems to envision rogues. I think I kept Astarion around just to open doors and chests, and disarm traps. He was a glorified bellman.
You can set up your reactions to apply Sneak Attack like standard 5e (the same way you can for paladin Smites).
My character is a roguez had to bounce between subclasses to find one that was actually good. I changed Asterian into a bard for obvious reasons. Rogues shouldn't be that horny
Played as Astarian. Gave him dual hand-crossbows and kept him back. Let my tank get agro then have Astarian reign down hell. Multi class 3levels of fighter and I could sneak up on the encounter and have Astarian unload with three attacks before the mobs even knew he was there.
As a scout and opening salvo I could not ask for much better
I really dislike how Sneak Attack works in BG3. I preffer Pathfinder Wotr version.
@@raymondparisza5094 Definitely multiclassing rogue makes it feel a LOT better. Gloomstalker build, fighter build, it definitely feels more like the 5e rogue that I know and love. But when I started playing, I played that easy baby mode and it actually felt HARDER not being allowed to multiclass (not to mention, thanks Larian for popping up an OFFER of multiclassing during that baby run and then dashing my hopes of improving that rogue through multiclassing by saying, NOPE not allowed). Dont get me wrong, I LOVE BG3. Love love love it all. Just my start being a 5e rogue and a 1e illusionist (just kill me now getting one even levelled up was so painful but she who survived will always be my love) just was a bit more painful than I would have liked. Now playing on balanced for story or tactician when I feel crazy OP and need to be put in my place, its a lot better being able to take those fighter levels makes everything better. Or taking bard levels, or taking ranger levels because the only thing a ranger is good for is cannibalizing their talents or hell tossing in a few levels of cleric for ultimate mutt build1
The sneak attack point is actually not true. Under the reactions tab you can enable sneak attack to apply. With this on you can do any attack(that would be eligible for sneak attack) and you get a popup asking if you want to sneak attack if it hits.
So you never actually have to touch that dumb sneak attack action
I just wish Magical Ambush actually worked. As of right now, it triggers when you go into stealth, but the effect is immediately lost.
just like tabletop ironically enough, since (rules as written) arcane tricksters can't bypass somatic or verbal components of spells they instantly lose the hidden condition when casting most spells preventing magical ambush from functioning in the first place
Assassinate: Ambush is totally busted in BG3. If your rogue initiates combat with a sneak attack, then on their first turn, the enemies are still surprised and they can still use sneak attack, even if the enemies are looking right at them.
@deathbykonami5487 I know, what I'm talking about is the 9th level Arcane Trickster ability. Magical Ambush is supposed to impose disadvantage on saving throws vs. your spells, as long as you cast them while hidden.
@zilba4405 Damn that sucks. Sounds like it's pretty pointless then. I've only gotten to level 8 with my Arcane Trickster in tabletop, so I never got to really see how it worked, or doesn't in this case.
@coiler_119
Most DMs will smooth it over because of course a class feature should work, but, yeah, RaW, Magical Ambush literally does nothing.
Arcane Tricksters are ⅓rd casters not half casters.
this may be the first time i've ever seen anyone imply infiltration expertise is a good feature lmao
Best line in the whole sketch:
"We're not trying to get in combat. That’s why we're SNEAKY!"
"We're not trying to get into combat; That's why we're SNEAKING!!!" Is gold 😂
For some reason I thought the title said "5th edition vs 3rd edition rogue" and yet this is still really good!
BG3 Rogue didn't deserve that. Somebody give that man a hug.
Sneek attack applies by itself if you meet the requirements it s also found in the reactions tab sou you can for instance sneek attack with your second attack without the special animation
So glad you're continuing this series!
One of my favourite things I’ve learned in bg3 is you can use great weapon fighter on sneak attack due to the existence of the singing sword
Sneak attack is also auto applied if the condition are met when using normal attack. adv or enemy near ally and no disadv.
Slight correction : you can toggle "ask if I apply sneak attack" in the game, so it asks you if you want to apply it for each attack you take, instead of using sneak attack action.
5e definitely had some Bard levels in there with all that Vicious Mockery
This one was brutal! 😂😂😂 So glad to see the series isn't dead!
Thanks to this video and my friend I realise for some reason people tend to use Sneak Attack action instead of use it as a reaction
Huh? How are you even supposed to use it as a reaction if it requires enemies to move out of your melee range? As a rogue we are not the most resistant to damage so it makes sense to take us out first, and the AI of the game just concentrates on the enemies in front of them, so we don't really get to use sneak attack as a reaction.
@@MrDragondriannope not like that . Sneak attacks do have a reaction . Let's say u have advantage on an enemy but u can't sneak attack them or u forgot to , if u have sneak attack toggled on u can normal attack an enemy and the pop up will come asking u whether u want to sneak attack or not along with ur normal attack .

At least you can toggle sneak attack as a weird reaction that doesn’t cost a reaction when you hit in the reactions tab. Unfortunately so many people don’t realize this though.
after "you turned into your parents" i was laughting on the floor :D
You can apply sneak attack in BG3 you need to able it in the reactions...
Sneak attack can actually be triggered via the reaction system, you don't have to take the sneak attack action!
And I believe there's actually a dialogue option that makes use of thieve's cant.
Fun fact: Baldurs gate 3 rogue can greatly exploit staying out of turn order as long as every attack is a sneak attack 1-hit kill. Just keep them seperated from the group at all times.
I didn't know that 5e Rogues can use Vicious Mockery
That daddy larian and mommy wizards nearly ended me.
Can you imagin having 5th edition VS BG 1 and 2? Would be pretty funny seeing the fighter one.
In that case 2nd edition vs bg1-2 makes more sense
you can set sneak attack to proc on any attack you make fyi. It's in the reactions tab of the character.
You definitely need to do a version of this series but with 3.5 Pathfinder versus baldur's gate 3 with the 5e commenting
I can say
The Pathfinder Magus is a fantastic class in BG3.
You don’t need to apply sneak attack actions, you just set your reactions to apply it when it’s applicable and attack as normal.
didnt know rogues learned vicious mockery
“What does that do… turn you into your parents.” :( that hurt
That was by FAR the most violent episode so far, my gosh !
Long and costy preperations for "Infiltration Expertise" in Baldur's Gate 3 are like a Rogue's parents:
They don't exist
2:38 OMG I'M DEAD 🤣
...Just like the Rogue's parents.
You can apply sneak attack as a reaction, you don't need to use the action.
small correction, you can actually place sneak attack as a reaction command (doesn't use your reaction)
so if you fired a crossbow bolt from your offhand,, you can still get that sneak attack, you just need to make sure its set up in your reaction menu
"you can't say that because you're a son to no one"
That has got to be the absolute sickest burn I've ever heard!
You guy's should see 3.5, every attack can sneek attack so a blinking duel dagger thrower can sneak attack 6 times a turn. They where glass cannons that could only kill low ac enemies
Expertise in sleight of hand, plus reliable talent opens a lot of the doors in the game...
"You turn into your parents?" was BRUTAL, even I got hurt with that one, and I HAVE PARENTS.
Beneath this video, I got a suggestion for a video with a thumbnail of Krillin from Dragon Ball Z throwing a senzu bean. Seems fitting, given the ending.
*hits table while chanting* "Fight-ers!, Fight-ers!, Fight-ers!"
Sneak attack can actually be done as a reaction, you just need to turn it on in the reactions menu, like paladin smites
Right but it's not *suposed* to take any action economy, it's just a fun bonus die that reflect your rogue using their advantage in combat to strike at a vulnerable point to inflict more damage, not sneak in an extra, little stab from a secret knife or something.
@averyodowd6448 It doesn't use a reaction, phrased that badly. It works the same way the barbarian reckless does, you can do it for free after an attack hits you just have to enable it
You can make sneak attacks as a “reaction” if you turn it on in the reaction menu of the character
Oh, the burns! XD
(turns invisible)
"You turn into your parents?"
That was savage! 😂 This might be your best video of the BG3 series yet. (Glad the series is back).
he turns invisible but he still exists.... unlike his parents.
The best wild shape he turned into was Ryan George 😂
The Roast is on FIRE!
I laught so much.
Tip for my rogues out there. Press K and set sneak attack to trigger as a reaction. Never press the sneak attack button. Your welcome.
That "You turn into your parents" line was brutal.
The banter here is pretty good.
There actually is a mention/use of thieves cant in BG3 when dealing with the githyanki at the entrance to the mountain pass if you're a rogue! You can try to scramble your thoughts by thinking in thieves cant to disguise your intentions when speaking to Voss.
“Why don’t you just sit?”
Get this discount monk of an orphan out of here
The magic items in BG3 totally break the thief class though. Cats grace cloth and the smuggler ring and you can rob shops and NPCs blind
"your parents got a divorce and neither one wants you"
As a bard, I'm using this for my next vicious mockery
That extra bonus action can make a dual wielding sharpshooter NASTY! Just ask my thief rogue/battlemaster fighter cowboy Wulford Buckly.
That intro joke was so savage, i watched whole video and still laugh from it xD
"Son of a-"
"No, you can't say that. You're a son to nobody"
I fucking died
Rogue came from being one of the most used classes to just being everyones multiclass dip
The turning invisible followed by the parents line should apply as a bonus action attack.
~_~
I completely forgot thieves cant existed until this video reminded me
Unsung hero of the Grung race!
You can't speak Common, but if you take a level in Rogue you can at least communicate with gang signs through an interpretor.
Or communicate with your flute thing.
Or communicate with your flute thing in a way that only other Grung Rogues can interpret.
0:38 Are you sure that's not the Bard? Because that was some vicious mockery.
Baldur's gate rogue : I can make very high damage, unlock every doors and chest (except those that are scripted), and be the meanest guy you've ever known.
BG3 taught me so much about how the rogue's sneak abilities worked though, with line of sight and visible 'detection areas' and light levels, how sneak attacks are supposed to work against enemies that know you're there, it was always something I had a really hard time visualizing in 5e.
You can set sneak attack as a reaction in bg3, which I found out super late 😂
Man this one got vicious. No mercy given.
