RANGERS in DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS have gotten the reputation on being the WORST CLASS IN D&D....and why is that? Maybe its because of the notoriously bad BEAST MASTER SUBCLASS. Or maybe its because fans don't know how to make a RANGER BUILD. One thing is for certain though, BG3 RANGERS seem to FIX THE RANGER and listen to the issues players had with the class, and MADE THE RANGER THE BEST CLASS IN BALDUR'S GATE 3!

To clarify: For 5e, im basing everything that is found in the PHB since that was the official publishing of the classes and the one that every D&D player has access to. Yes I understand Tasha’s fixes the Ranger, but you shouldn’t have to buy a WHOLE NOTHER BOOK to have the “correct” version of a class 🤷 Just throwing that out there.
I think we all appreciate the clarification, but even the PHB ranger wasn’t that bad. Most players focus on Hunter’s mark as being the main ranger spell to get an additional die of damage but in reality once a player discovers hail of thorns or zephyr’s strike for the BA concentration spell depending on whether you are a martial or ranger player, you’ll never look at hunters mark again unless you are tracking an NPC for an extended period of time.
Ranger lovers everywhere agree we should have had a good class but then the monk fans keep saying that we are not the worst in the PHB. Now that is a fight! :)
@syvajarvi2289 Yeah shit like spike growth and conjure animals are insane
That, or use WikiDot.
I mean, you don't actually have to buy tasha's. If you're someone who's aware enough to know that other books change things about the game odds are you're just going to look them up since the physical book isn't a literal requirement for Dungeons & Dragons modern-day

Larian didn't need a "vision" for that lol. They just fixed 5e's ranger in relatively common ways.

BG3 Warlock: Our pact weapons use our charisma modifier without having to pick hexblade!

I have to try ranger now
fisrt time playing BG3 I used ranger and I could not understand the problems with Ranger on D&D until I started playing D&D
I recommend getting going in on archery and getting the Sharpshooter feat. Araj at Moonrise sells a headpiece that helps offset the penalty from All In when Hunter's Mark is active on who you're attacking. So you'll be doing like 20-27 damage in one hit. I sincerely believe the dev animosity to Rangers can only be explained with two words: Drizzt Do'urden. The character was such a go-to for players who just wanted to emulate the flagship fictional character that it was almost impossible to find a table that didn't have a dual-scimitar-wielding Drow Ranger with too many z's and apostrophes in their name somewhere in the mix.
TBH, I wasnt even thinking of doing that when I made my first char for a live game. He is half-drow though, but a rogue, and prefers putting arrows into people.
I do miss the instant invisibility of gloomstalkers though. That one they didn’t allow. Very sad. But, well, is what it is. I do still main rangers for dnd games though. Not always, because sometimes it just doesn’t fit the character I have in mind and/or the party I’m in, but still, majority of my characters will be rangers. I feel I play them pretty well and they are pretty useful for their party. It still takes work to make sure I build the ranger right to insure they are good for the campaign they are in though, I will admit that much. It takes a lot of working with the dm when selecting things and discussions with my party and having a good eye for the story direction and the party composition to figure that out. But, I do like having played BG3 with my brother and playing a ranger character. Had to figure out the differences and adjust my play style but my brother thinks the class is pretty neat too, which he didn’t realize because of ranger’s old reputation. He has made a ranger character for himself since then.
With a drow hood from the underdark they can go invisible at will. Plus they have the umbral cloak that makes them invisible while standing kind of with the +10 to stealth when they aren't taking actions.
@@stoiccrane4259 But the main point of the gloomstalker, that they have it without action/bonusaction, just passively, and it acts like a greater invisibility, because actions doesn't break it.
Yes, it is also situational, but a really OP broken situational power and I know that Larian made this way, because gameplay reasons: the half game is in the darkness. But that's why I don't understand that why did they put the subclass in the game.
It's even more tragically funny now that we see what happened to Ranger in the 2024 book
I always found that the Ranger is the closest to a a fantasy trope of adventurer (Aragorn-style), and yet, one of the weakest classes in the most famous fantasy RPG rules. Still took it in every single game as my main character though.
Yeah. In concept it's great. In practice it falls short. You're basically a fighter/rogue/druid hybrid that excels in the wilderness, which is where most adventuring is going to be. It sounds awesome, until you actually start playing it.
Can we just forget One D&D and have Larian publish their rule book?
If WOTC wouldn't get so butthurt about it and probably sue them into the ground, I'd kill for a timeline in which we get an official BG3 rulebook... My Saturday table is already playing with some BG3 houserules :)
Can't wait to see how BG3's Monk is going to bully 5e's Monk XD
I would hope he doesn't or it would just be the same joke
A newbie played an open hand monk in Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and I was consistently impressed with how it played. A lot of the situational stuff came into play, like "understand all languages" was super handy! So monks are pretty viable imo, and buffs will only make them cooler.
@@CollinWootan open hand is also really good i think the fact that the push, topple, and stagger just become your new flurry and cost nothing extra is really good it gets past the problem some of the others have where they give you just new worse options that take your already small amount ki.
Don't worry. I love you 5e Ranger ... but only when you use all the optional features in Tasha's.
I'm still mad about all the stuff 5e ranger has competing for concentration.
To all the 5th ed players who wanted to play aragorn we feel for you
I've had some players enjoy being a Ranger, but it worked for them because they knew in advance what kind of enemies they would be facing, so they could pick a favored enemy that they were definitely going to encounter a lot.
It also helped that, when it came to certain exotic enemies that they found in the hells, I allowed them to benefit from their favored enemy by recognizing that the thing they were up against was NOT a type of demon, because they knew enough about demons to know that this creature fell into some other category.
I mean, ever since Tasha’s rangers have actually been very good. In fact, they were still decent before then with good weapon use, the best 1/2 caster spell list, and Gloomstalker. Beastmaster was even fixed it Tasha too
Hunter wasn't that bad either if you just wanted to take a target down. Tasha's did add awesome features we ranger enjoyers needed or wanted
I'm sorry did you say, best half caster spell list? Have you read Artificer? Ranger's spell list suffers from the fact that almost all of their spell require concentration, which means you can't use hunter's mark, the only reason they are any good at combat. Also Ranger was "decent" at combat sure, the problem with their design was that their class abilities are so situational I've never even seen them get used.
@@davidmarks6821 artificer has about equally as good of a list, but your statement about hunters mark is objectively false at this point. Crossbow expert outputs much more damage than HM in the vast majority of scenarios, freeing up your concentration for amazing spells like spike growth and conjure animals. Even still, rangers get great non concentration spells like Goodberry. Favoring concentration spells isn’t a problem for a half caster anyway, as their play pattern is to cast a big concentration spell and then make attacks with a weapon.
@@davidmarks6821 Pass without trace is incredibly useful for stealth and getting surprise, good berry is a fantastic healing spell, and conjure animals… exists. Also, I still don’t get how people think hunters mark is a good spell. Go watch the by Pack Tactics on hunters mark, it does a great job showcasing the spells flaws.
@@princephantom1294 Crossbow expert gives you one more attack, what will most likely be 1d6+4, hunter's mark will on average make you deal 2d6 more damage per turn, you know what the average of both of these are? 7.5 and 7. I don't think it makes alot of difference, unless you are also using sharpshooter, at this point we are locking Ranger's into a specific playstyle to be good. Aso you know crossbow expert and hunter's mark can stack right? Especially if you are fighting a single target, so you don't need to use your bonus action to move hunter's mark. It also requires you to be using a hand cross bow. Extremely limiting play style don't you think, shouldn't a class not be locked into one specific way to play that is the only good one? Spike growth is exceptionally situational. I've seen it break combat encounters, I've also seen it be entirely useless. Conjure animals is again situational, entirely dependent on whether your dm lets you summon fairies to turn you into T-Rex. Goodberry is quite literally only good if food is what you are concerned about, 8 hit points as 8 actions is way to long of a use time for it to be any good.
The play pattern cant really be to cast a big concentration spell and use attacks when the only big concentration spells they have are situational at best. Which is my entire problem with the old ranger, everything is situational. Not in a forest, fighting specifically trees? Too bad now you don't have any class features.
I can talk about this for hours, but its long, and I'm probably coming off as a POS so i'll stop now.
I did a ranger knight playthrough in BG3 (bounty hunter with colossus slayer and two-handed sword). Was a lot of fun and felt plenty powerful.
BG3 is better than 2024 ranger
The beastmaster initiative change in bg3 is one we actually brought over to our live game and it feels so nice
Tasha’s caldron alternate rules make 5e rangers better then fighters
Pffff, nope. Tasha make rangers aceptable. But they do it at the cost of selling their soul as a class. Tasha's abilities are things that have nothing to do with being a ranger, and they have no flavor whatsoever.
@@caurdyes because there’s absolutely no flavor in abilities that represent their more Druidic sides in being able to speak with and feel what animals are feeling, giving them more languages to represent how many places they’ve likely been, allowing them to choose an expertise based on their practices instead of just rarely coming up when convienient, abilities representing their greater endurance that comes from constantly moving long distances and fulfilling the fantasy of excelling across all parts of nature by recognizing the patterns that come with each environment rather than getting the skills of a glorified tour guide
@@patrickhannon2694 No, the more druidic aspects belong to the druid, not the ranger.
Expertise? Stolen from the rogue and the bard.
Oh god, are you talking about deft explorer? That aptitude is a fucking joke. Canny steals the rogue's expertise (because the ranger can't have his own identity), roving is a decent ability, and tireless is bullshit.
And then, nature's vail is one of the worst features in the game. That is, you are now at LEVEL 10 and it allows you to become invisible... for one round. At that level the wizards already have greater invisibility (and normal invisibility for 7 levels), so...
But the worst of all is Favored Foe, that's an insult. I mean, mechanically it's not bad, I can probably say it's even good. But it is the one that most represents the Tasha's design laziness. It is a feature with literally 0 flavor, 0 meaning, and even 0 interaction with the game mechanics. What are you doing? Roll 1d4 more damage, without conditions and without even resorting to the action economy. What does it have to do with a ranger? Nothing, you just deal more damage, NOTHING MORE THAN THAT. It's a totally soulless feature.
@@caurdTasha’s takes the ranger back to its core concept in 1 and 2e, being a flexible half caster without the need to multi-class. I prefer Tasha’s over the 5e core rules because I dictate the flavor of the character. Choose a second Fighting Style from any classes Fighting Style list. If the Fighting Style would give you cantrips, they don't count against your number of cantrips known. If they don't appear on the ranger spell list, they are nonetheless ranger spells for you. Your spellcasting ability for those spells is Wisdom.
Retaliation
When you are reduced to 0 hit points by a Favored Enemy or your Favored Foe, but not killed outright, your hit points are only reduced to 1. If this occurs, you may immediately use your reaction to attack that enemy. If the attack hits, the enemy must make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or be knocked prone and stunned until the start of your next turn.
Once you use this ability, you may not use it again until after you complete a long rest.
Level 15 gives Apex Hunter
Apex Hunter
You are immune to the Charmed and Frightened conditions from your Favored Enemies or Favored Foe and they cannot attack you with advantage.
When people play ranger using just the PHB
and with a cruel DM who never lets them use their situational stuff and didn't let them have a cool animal companion. And who presumably always make small combat maps so being ranged isn't that much of an advantage.
@@Ezullof The problem is that his situational features are not a big deal either. Having an advantage in wisdom and intelligence rolls to gather information... well, it's not that big of a deal, it's not that difficult to use other means to gain an advantage, and an advantage doesn't have to guarantee you anything.
@@EzullofThis is definitely one of the biggest issues I’ve noticed watching newer DMs. They don’t create enough opportunities for each member the party to make them all feel important.
A Larian BG3 5E Player's Handbook for table top would be awesome.
I think Baldur's Gate 3 could become a new ruleset if enough people want it to be. I'd love it as a ruleset.
I love how in BG3 for warlock you don’t have to take hexblade. Any class can get what hexblade has with pact of the blade. Simple and elegant.
I'm oddly drawn to rangers and was very excited in BG3 the first time I realized my raven was becoming ~shiny~. I've mostly played pathfinder and almost didn't play one after hearing about how bad the dnd 5e ranger was
Jokes aside, I really liked the Playtest 6 One D&D Ranger. I am playing one right now, and enjoying it a whole lot. The ranger becomes a great exploration class, with some free spell casting baked into it (limited by wisdom modifier), and can switch their favored terrain on a long rest. The subclasses are also reworked, so the Gloomstalker, while still very formidable, is a lot better conceptualised, and no longer is the absolute dominant option in comparison to others. Considering the changed spell list system, the ranger now has access to a lot more spells as well. Overall, a very nice and balanced take on the class.
Except you know, they nerfed the perma invisibility feature in darkness of Gloomstalker.
Most fun ive had in BG3 eo far in my hundreds of hours has been my original Gloomstalker Ranger with a small multispec into rogue for the extra bonus action. So much fun just nailing enemies from ages away and taking down or disabling enemies so that my melee companions could deal with the bigger threats with ease
Ranger has the potential to be just the most powerful class in bg3 if used and built properly, it's insane
I'm playing a level 5 wisdom based ranger with Four attacks at lvl 5. Summon Beast, Primal Companion, Attack + Extra Attack. And all of them key off my wisdom score with a high wisdom with using shillelagh from druidic warrior or a 1 lvl dip into druid. Now, I will grant you this, my favored enemy isn't that useful, but I did opt for that instead of favored foe since my concentration goes to my spells all the time. Deft Explorer, however, gave me expertise in perception, and in on 1 more level I'll be getting a swim and climb speed.
2:08 As someone who doesn't play DnD, I have no idea who you're talking about.
I need the Rogue video now. The BG3 thief subclass just getting an extra free bonus action every single turn is insane. And I know it’s for game balance reasons, but the loss of Reliable Talent is physically painful.
It also doesn't help that 5E Ranger is being designed by people who don't know how to design games...because they all left before 5E released!
...where as BG3 Ranger was designed by people who played the game, understand game design, and thus made changes that don't just make sense, they make it playable!
Once TOV is released...
I really hope you guys do a TOV/5.5-6E/BG3 comparison...
(if you dont know why Im calling out Kobold Press' "Tales of the Valiant", its because alot of former Tabletop vets who worked on 3E, 4E, & began work on 5E, now work at Kobold Press...so they too know how to design a class!)
To be fair, if your dm likes using terrain and travel rules a ranger can be an absolute godsend. They bring pretty cool utility and support stuff, it's just not used often enough :(
I still say that my goblin hunter ranger is one of my favorite builds I've ever done. Sadly it was only used for a one-shot. He dominated a good portion of it until a berserker fairy with a magic Warhammer dominated the last half.
Gloomstalker actually got nerfed in the translation, funnily enough.
in tabletop they're considered invisible to creatures relying on darkvision if they're in darkness or dim light. Which is _crazy_ strong
The moment when even fellow rangers don’t want to be near other rangers
I main rangers. And love them.
In 2 campaigns I play, my ranger is both the party leader and Tank due to my abilitys and attack power.
People keep complaining about rangers, but they let you tap into many different abilities, and if you plan your ranger around the campaign, they can be busted.
My natural explorer is for swamps and forest, and we are in stuck in a mansion.
But that mention is inside a swamp so I get my proficiency as a result because we are stuck on the property, not specifically inside it.
My gloomstalker gets a plus 8 to initiative.
I get extra attacks,
Advantage on attacks once per turn,
Can force disadvantage on 1 enemy attack once per turn,
My stealth checks are an 11.
With pass without a trace even a nat 1 is a dirty 20.
With some armor and dual weild feat I get a 19 ac.
Rangers are great IF you spend time learning them and prepping for your campaign.
4e ranger, in the distance, knowing full damn well that their class was the reason 5e ranger was nerfed into the ground.
3.5e ranger even further away, just being a chill bro.
They also have so many poisons they add to their arrows now. Also previously useless spells, like long strider, can now be ritually casted on your entire party until a long rest.
Man, BG3 Ranger just choose violance that day
(Reaches into the computer and gives 5e Ranger a hug.) It's okay, man. I still love Rangers.
I mean... You get a nice blend of fighting abilities and magic abilities. AND, how else can you get a rideable pet dragon (Drakewarden) or summon an ARMY OF BEES (Swarmkeeper)?
Well, Ranger in Pathfinder 2e dont suck 😆
I fully allow the use of the BG3 Ranger at my table.
Now that we know the new ranger 2024... 😢, why!?!? Couldn't you follow Larian example? It svcks still 😭🤧
I like when the animal companion acts on your initiative, but I've never made my players use action/BA to command it.
Main takeaway from this
Is the One DND version really that bad? I haven't kept up with the UA
no it isnt bad, its basically the TCE version with some minor bits and bobs changed. and TCE already is pretty serviceable
@@galmenz6118 Big debate is what they are going to do with hunter's mark/favored enemy. It scored awful in the last playtest but wizards went wizarding and instead of putting out an update they washed their hands and said "ALL DONE".
@@Nerd704 they also left bard with a version that had arcane/divine/primal still on the game, and the playtest bard doesnt work at all without them
The original from the PHB was pretty bad, was considered ok with the subclasses in XGtE, then got good with Tasha's (giving variant features and an alternate Beast Master subclass). OneDnD is keeping up with the ideas from Tasha's, so its in a good place.
A lot of this RUclipsr's videos are based on the original PHB ranger, its been fine for years.
@@Aevum13th considering people still do "wizard dies of 1d4 damage" which hasnt been exactly true for a solid 20 years or so, its just the way internet stablished jokes go around
BG3 also gave Ranger Vicious Mockery according to this.
If this was 2018 this would be exactly correct
And what changed now?
If someone picks up the PHB, this video is still correct.
absolutely correct
@@TheKodiak72
The only real BAD Ranger build in 5e was the Beastmaster subclass from the PHB which was severely underbalanced action economy wise. The Hunter worked just fine, and classes like Gloom Stalker and Monster Slayer from Xanathar's made them almost a bit too powerful. Tashas optional "fixes" really don't make that much of a difference in that regard, but make them flavorwise better in general. The hide thing first and foremost.
Yeah, Favored Enemy and such didn't work as they used to in older editions, but the point with 5e rangers was never to lean as hard on that as older editions did anyway.
The most powerful single damage dealer in our campaign is a Monster Slayer Ranger. She's nigh untouchable which for me as a DM makes balancing encounters a headache sometimes. And we're experienced players who's been around for a while, so go figure.
Poor 5e ranger
BG3 Beast Master is starting to sound a lot like the updated 5e Beast Master...
Also, I love how supportive 5e Ranger is of BG3 Ranger
Kind of curious to see which Beast Master is better, the one from BG3 or the one from Tasha's.
Something tells me we’re gonna see a lot of people making a house rule that rangers at their table use the BG3 design instead
I'm playing as a Tabaxi Gloomstalker Ranger in a Lost of Mine Phandelver game that may or may not do the Shattered Oblisk half of the new version of LoMP and so far she's kicking ass especially in both close-range combat and long-range combat along with healing when needed.
Duke for some reason thinks Rangers still suck, even though Tasha's came out years ago. I don't really get it.
I'm not sure if WoC just tries to stay true what would be considered 'pure' DnD based on previous editions, but it is fairly obvious that with how many balancing issues the game has that there's some stagnation or bias in the development process. Larian gets a hold of the same abilities, decides to increase and respect player power, and is basically universally praised for it.
But when a long train of nerfs and recalculations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces poor design to reduce a class under absolute obsolescence, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such blunderment, and to provide new rules for their future rangerity. Such has been the patient sufferance of these players, and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Gameplay.
--The Declaration of Independent DMs
Okay I can’t be the only one who LOVES playing rangers and lives for their story opportunities…. right?
Someone just publish Larian's changes as a TTRPG supplement :D
Other than jump requiring an action *grabs pitchfork* :D
Jump doesn’t require an action???
@@GAMER32231 It does / did in BG3?
It's become a house ruleset to use the Ranger changes in BG3 at our table. Now my players actually WANT to play Ranger.
FINALLY
and after seeing the video i can - again - say FINALLY
What rangers should be: Outriders and survivors, rugged with experience and common sense. A class able to punch far above their weight class due to a superior ability to plan encounters based off of previous lessons learned the hard way.
DnD ranger: I'm a weaker fighter, and a weaker rogue.
"My people make sure that every class is strong and playable here"
Circle of Spores crying in the corner with melee features despite not getting Extra Attack
To be fair he dont need a extra atk, he is already too op.
you have a full magazine of spells to use. cleric doesnt get extra attack either and it doesnt need to, its fine
They made huge improvements for Circle of Spores already, Extra Attack would be unnecessary
@@vitorapereira9469 OP?? Circle of Spores is absolutely TERRIBLE. Their main feature, which takes an action to use despite moon druid using a bonus action, can be taken away after a single round of combat because it's reliant on you having the Temp HP. The reaction damage is inconsistent and very weak. The nature of the extra melee damage requires you to either always have a pretty bad concentration spell active, or become M.A.D., and at higher levels it becomes SO obsolete, because two dice of damage plus wisdom is pretty decent at low levels, but as soon as you get to like level 5 it's bad. the zombie uses the TERRIBLE monster statblock and never gets better, despite plenty of other similar spells and class features (like wildfire druid) having their minion scale with you. and Spreading Spores completely goes against EVERYTHING all of the previous features give you, including the added protection of your spore aura, in exchange for a TERRIBLY underpowered and tiny AOE effect.
I recommend Bone Wizard's "How You Should Buff Spore Druid"
@@manwithapointystick3871 extra attack was probably a shortsighted example, but Spores druid is still GOD AWFUL. if you'd like to see my reasoning you can check my reply to vitoriapereira
I’m half tempted to start DMing just to try and homebrew/fix ranger for my games.
Bro REFUSED to read Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything 💀 It fixes all 5th edition Rangers, especially Beast Masters
I wish one day there is a video involving the "5e Ranger" character looking at Tasha's.
I actually started a game in BG3 with my friends and decided to try out ranger and I had a blast!
2024DnD killed Ranger.
My favourite part about ranger in BG3 is how all the good features are frontloaded into the early levels so its an easy multiclass option for a lot of classes
Not sure if you check these for suggestions, but given your recent polling, I'm going to point out how much I hate this 'ranger bad' idea that somehow caught on. From what I can tell, they got one bad subclass and everyone gave up. Hammering on the joke gets pretty boring after years of hearing it.
Can't wait to see BG3 Ranger invite 5e Ranger to the 2024 edition party...... Sadly, he was grounded by his parents at Wizards of the Coast for having too much fun with BG3.
I'm curious to see how he will do the 5e vs BG3 wizard comparison
When I got BG3 for the Xbox, I decided that I wanted to do a wood elf ranger, then after thinking about it I decided to do the weirdest multiclass one can imagine: gloomstalker ranger and tempest cleric I ultimately changed my mind last minute but it's was going to be 7 lvls in ranger and the other 5 in cleric
Tasha's made a lot of changes to these features anyway.
Rangers are actually pretty strong in 5e if you're using optional class features.
And don't forget they get d10 hit dice.
I'd allowed the favoured terrain and enemy can be changed on a long rest if you're familiar with both for a period of time(in the game).
Should've had 5e kill BG3 and try to take his spot only for BG3 to succeed with his saving throw and retaliate.
funny you posted this the very day that wizards and baldurs gate 3's development teams split ways putting a squash on any further dlc or any chance at a baldurs gate 4 or anything
