No news is good news with Nintendo. If they come out and say “we cancelled this game” it is a 0 percent chance of being finished within the next decade
Genuinely hilarious that Koei Tecmo has their stuff together and doesn't get contracts cancelled by anyone, meanwhile Namco gets told to go away by Nintendo twice. The big ask is if they'll lose Super Smash Bros Switch 2 support studio work, it seems unlikely, but who knows if by that time Nintendo has put MonolitSoft's excess employees on that job too. It's important to recognize that Koei Tecmo isn't a AAA game developer in Japan but they aren't bleeding because they have project managers doing their job (scope of the budget and project size). IIRC Koei has had contracts with both Sony on exclusives and Nintendo with exclusives and tons of licensed Warriors style games.
I'm with you on this one, Mr. Forecast. I think the odds of Bandai Namco cancelling a Nintendo game entirely, based purely on financial reasons, just doesn't make sense. This is mainly because they would be very likely to make a lot more money than they would be putting into it, with all of the Nintendo brand recognition and whatnot. Anyway, I digress. All that aside, it's cool to get a second Nintendo Forecast video on the same day. I didn't expect that!
Impressive turnaround time on this video! Thanks for giving me a nod for suggesting the idea as well. The main thing I'm confused about is the implication that Bandai Namco pulled the plug on this project and not Nintendo. That doesn't seem right to me. I feel like Nintendo would be calling the shots, right? I don't know how much their 1.76% stake in Bandai Namco factors into things, but I imagine Nintendo would have the final say over these matters. And since Nintendo is also known to try and realize long-gestating ideas that they've had to scrap before (like hardware that supports 3D visuals)...if this was their remaster project, wouldn't they probably just try and coordinate things to where another team can restart the project, or maybe even finish the current iteration of it? I don't know, but I imagine there's a distinct possibility that the relationship between Nintendo and Bandai Namco is straining. First they reportedly couldn't handle Metroid Prime 4, and now a second project of theirs has possibly been scrapped? I feel like that's bound to cause issues despite the existence of Studio 2 and Studio S. I think there's a good chance the remaster is the victim of Bandai Namco's aggressive restructuring. If it is (was) Kid Icarus Uprising, as has been rumored and speculated, then it wouldn't be a surefire hit in the same way as something like Smash and thus more likely to be on the chopping block. Smash kind of has to be safe - as does Pokemon. Even though Pokken wasn't a huge seller and New Pokemon Snap, while performing respectably and becoming the best selling Pokemon spinoff in some time, still sold around half of what the original did, there is potential there. It's Pokemon. Plus, The Pokemon Company likely would've commissioned the project and not Nintendo. They publish every Pokemon game in Japan - plus, unlike the mainline games, their spinoffs have been explicitly joint-published between them and Nintendo outside of Japan. Both Pokken and New Snap have "The Pokemon Company/Nintendo" listed as their publisher on the Switch OS. I think other things are on the table as well, though. There's been rumors of a Mario Baseball revival being on the cards, though they're not terribly concrete. Additionally, given certain developments within the Xenoblade series, Monolith Soft seems keen on revisiting Xenosaga, which would surely involve Bandai Namco in some way (while possibly being handled by Nintendo, unlike the Baten Kaitos remasters). And circling back to Bandai Namco allegedly being the initial developer of Metroid Prime 4...they could've been working on basically anything, not necessarily just Smash, Mario sports, Pokemon spinoffs, or even revisiting Star Fox. Who's to say this project wasn't, say, a Splatoon spinoff, given how Bandai Namco supported Splatoon 3's development? Or tied to Chibi-Robo, given how pre-merger with Namco, Bandai was originally attached as publisher for the game? No matter what, I hope the game has merely been put on hold. That does seem like something that would be within Bandai Namco's power to do without Nintendo making that call. I love New Pokemon Snap, and Kid Icarus Uprising is one of the Nintendo games I want to see return most - I skipped getting it on 3DS digitally because of the rumors of the remaster and the fact that my hands cramp up fairly easily, which I imagine would've made the controls awful for me to deal with. I also liked Pokken, and while I haven't really played either Mario Baseball game, it is the Mario sports title that is most inherently interesting to me. Losing a Bandai Namco take/followup for any of those would be a massive shame.
replying just to comment that i think you’re on the money with it being a pause on a nintendo project; as other commenters have pointed out, i don’t think bandai would be interested in scrapping a nintendo project, and i doubt they would have the ability to do so
If Bandai develops a project as a contractor for Nintendo. Shouldn’t Nintendo foot the bill? If Nintendo canned the project fair enough, but if Bandai gets paid and decides to pull the plug doesn’t that create claims for recourse?
In the recent monolith soft 25th anniversary video, we see xenosaga featured prominently. Monolith soft has been on good terms with namco since the old times. Some people think it might be possible a saga remaster collection could be in the works. Following the footsteps of the baten kaitos remasters. For the uninformed, there are saga references in xenoblade even now. Some fans hope for a deep connection between the series to be made. It'd be a shame if the cancelled nintendo commission was a saga remaster collection. Especially with the upwards trajectory the xeno brand is on.

My money is this being Pokemon related, recent leaks imply that Nintendo was VERY unhappy with Gen 9 and is likely advising Gamefreak to reduce the amount of Pokemon content being made for quality purposes (we do know for sure that they asked them to delay Z-A and gen 10).
Interesting theory. But wouldn't an external studio Pokemon game help matters? If anything, BN could have been a huge asset on Gen 9. Also it suggests BN paused the title rather than Nintendo.
This has nothing to do with Game Freak, and odds are The Pokemon Company would be the one to coordinate/commission a Pokemon spinoff and not Nintendo. Both of Bandai Namco's spinoffs are listed as joint published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo even outside of Japan, even; mainline games are listed under Nintendo outside of Japan, while The Pokemon Company handles publishing for everything in Japan

You’re probably right about Bandai Namco not wanting to cancel a Nintendo project, but I’m no stranger to odd or idiotic company decisions. In any case, I wonder if Nintendo has any plans to expand more of their Mario franchises to be just a little closer to what’s seen in Mario Kart? Of course, I don’t expect the relatively niche Paper Mario to sell 60 million overnight, but could they be making strides towards a sports title selling over 15 million? To be fair I’m not familiar with the figures for Sport titles but I can’t recall one for switch being a particularly big seller. How could they interest the average consumer who has interest in Mario Kart? Even after all I’ve said, of course it won’t be easy at all. The mainline 3D Mario for switch has only sold about HALF of what Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did. But if Nintendo did decide to have MK8 share the spotlight with other Mario titles, just a little bit of it, would they become huge successes too? The main question for me, is, how could Nintendo appeal to the very-very-casual gamers with something like Paper Mario?
I thought the cancelled Nintendo game was known to be Metroid Prime 4? Unless this specified a newer game, reports told us Nintendo commissioned Bandai Namco to develop MP4, but 2 years in it got canceled & rebooted at Retro.
Honestly; the "Nintendo game " that bandia/namco was comissioned for that got cancelled; was probably Metriod Prime 4 and that Bloomberg was late to that party, but decided to reword the article to turn that blunder into clickbait.
I’m not sure where this video is going. First, the Bloomberg article specifically talks about a project commissioned by Nintendo. Whatever the project, it means contract work. In other words, the requested development team is not interested in sales and does not depend on sales but only provides work to the publisher. So the digression on the fact that this or that Nintendo game sells a lot is not relevant here since it does not change anything for Bandai Namco. The other element of the video that I don’t understand is the time you spend questioning the original source on topics that are not those advertised by the video title, whereas on the point specifically concerning Nintendo it is not an anonymous source but a cross-referenced Bloomberg information which would have been disproved if it had been false, since Bandai Namco obviously spoke directly to Bloomberg.
