A tip is to start with a long lead and work from there

You shouldn't need a dog to stay still. Capture the action instead of going for a 'sit down' shoot

Here is a tip: If you want to take a selfie with your dog, take some old earbuds/phone charger and cut them until you have the piece that goes into your phone and two inches of the cord. Then, take a tennis ball and cut a whole in it, take the string and weave it into the whole. BOOM you have a dog selfie trick. ( if your phones earbud outlets are on the bottom just flip your phone upside down, the app will manually flip over too!

Once I tried getting video and photos of a dog running toward me. It was great except that he didn't dodge but ran straight into me and the camera. It was hilarious but kinda hurt too. He wasn't the brightest pup.
