I played the arcade game a lot back in the day! In one of the game centers I used to go, this game has its volume configuration very loud, so at night the music of the altar stage during attraction mode created an eerie atmosphere in the Game Center. As a kid I loved that!
I played the arcade game a bunch of times when it was new and I thought it was fun and I liked the creepy atmosphere. I don't know why they didn't just make a straight port for the NES (with a graphical downgrade, of course). What they made is just inferior, and it's a shame because often the NES versions of arcade games were superior. Luckily, I had no idea that version existed until I watched the AVGN episode. Fun fact: soon Kali Ma will rule the world. (That repeated prophecy haunted my child brain for months!)
My dad had one of these arcade cabinets as I was growing up. I played it a bit but never got very far. Especially since he swapped out the game for Marble Madness most of the time
I loved this game out in the wild, I played it a ton, the creepy SFX is one of the reason it's so quirky and memorable, kind of like the star wars arcade "use the force luke", I never had the money or skill to beat it, would be fun on an emulator, but this thing was designed to eat quarters, it was a bit too difficult IMHO, but it was fun and memorable, I have a Dragon's Lair machine and SFII champion edition in my office, those are probably my favorites
