    Guitar Guy: "But dude, I'm telling you... I only know rhythm guitar, I can't play lead yet."
    T. Warrior: "Fuck it, no one will care."
    And the conversation went something like that.

    Celtic Frost how to be one of my fave bands. They inspired me to start playing the guitar. I will admit when i first heard cold lake it caught me off guard but when you actually listen to it the songs are still heavy . And it just another tom g warrior experiment. His experimental nature has been a big influence on me. He's never afraid to try new things.

    • @raakareiska9804
      @raakareiska9804 10 месяцев назад +5

      I appreciate musicians trying new things from the sake of creativity. And usually it works cause they still use their standards to judge it. But if the "new stuff" is made up just because some producer calls you and is telling that this kind of music sells and you need to get your band on this train quickly you know it's going to suck ass

    I myself am a very fond fan of Celtic Frost, and I can proudly say I appreciate Cold Lake as much as any other CF album. I think the problem is all these people who compare it to Celtic Frost's other stuff and disapprove because of the fact that it's a sellout. If you look at it in the form of a glam album instead of that one thrash band that went glam, it really is a good album with some great riffs. Good on you for putting this vid up, and shame on those trolling it for no good reason.

      I discovered this album through many podcasts and meme groups who seem to solely focus on the first couple minutes and then turn it off. I noticed the more I listened to cold lake, the more I forgot about the nonsense from those first 2 mins.
      I see it a black metal band being asked to write a hit record, and they wrote a hit record from the perspective of a black metal band. It's still shitty, the vocals still suck, the riffs are cool, and it's just a fucking fun record. I've heard really bad metal sell out records, and this isn't a sell out. It's more of a middle finger to the people who asked for a hit record.

      Into the Pandemonium is my favorite album by CF.I Won't Dance is a Bad Ass song .It embodies the fusion of Black,speed metal with commercial metal which is why I think it's awesome.
      I have heard Cold Lake and Vanity something I can't remember the name.
      It's funny CF started out heavy went commercial and went back to heavy.
      Pantera first 2 albums they had a commercial image and they went heavy and dressed more like Metallica for the Cowboys from Hell album.

    I was at this show and it was amazing. There was a small knot of disgruntled “fans” who complained that the songs weren’t “fast enough”. And that is the level of moron who dislikes this album, which is as inventive and creative ‘Into the Pandemonium’ because Celtic Frost never travelled with the herd.
    Anyway, I was so impressed I went to see them a second time in Manchester, and that show was even better.

    It was a clever idea. I think the concept was to prove that people are influenced dramatically by image, rather than content. When you listen to the songs on Cold Lake, they aren't that bad. The production is lightweight (indeed on th re-recorded versions on parched you can see how the songs improve with the heavier production). Indeed the songs stand up next to Vanity/Nemesis, which was just a heavier version of Cold Lake in many ways.
    people dismissed this on just the image. shame

    • @LadyFairChildVideo
      @LadyFairChildVideo 4 года назад +5

      yours is a very poetic take on it, but untrue. Tom just wanted a change, it wasn't a deep statement or "clever idea". it was just what he chose to wear and look like, and liked it at the time, all the way through Vanity /Nemesis.

    After Hellhammer disbanded and Celtic Frost did their first two Black metal records, it was imperative that Venom/Bathory/Possessed and Celtic Frost "fans of the time" would "disown" Cold Lake. But despite the deviation, Cold Lake and Vanity are amongst my favorite records of all time. All because I heard Celtic Frost with Cold Lake, but at the same time I was into Venom, Possessed, Hexx, Bathory, Entombed etc. I guess people need to have an open mind to accept the gift of "QUALITY MUSIC" from your favorite bands rather than criticize...This Live performance is "EPIC" and almost perfectly performed. I think it was an interesting take on how fickle metal fans were becoming and the impact of image. The Cold Lake production wasn't great, but as you say the tracks were solid. The main change was in the image and some people couldn't get over that... same band, playing an evolved version of their music, but they couldn't get past the image.

    The little speech in 29:36-54 says it all. He had tasted the good things in life, as he has also said in interview. Not so angry anymore. Narrowminded dark minds couldn't accept this wonderful new path in the band's development. The heartbreaking lesson he drew from the failure was that he is best at making music when he is depressed. So sad, he could have become a much more accomplished person and artist had he continued the Cold Lake path, just bringing it to a more mature audience in another name perhaps, and getting a better singer lol.

      I really do see your point but Cold Lake came out at such an odd time. It seemed to me Tom was aping someone else's vision. Hair metal was selling records & making money. When I picked up Cold Lake my heart sank. It seemed like Tom was making an obvious grab for cash. Changing the name was a good idea Morbid Tales/To Megatherion Frost was a total different band than Cold Lake CF. One more thing - hair metal fans aren't really known for their level of maturity & the Cold Lake look SCREAMS hair metal.

    I've been a CF fan since 1985. I think Tom overreacted to the bad reviews of “Cold Lake.” The fans were idiots, just as bad as the critics, and soon abandoned the band and Tom went into a depression over it all. He's overly sensitive and has always taken this kind of criticism very hard as he's admitted.
    Because it wasn't a rehash of “Procreation,” it was “Glam” to the simpletons. Most of you are too young to know what Glam is. Take a look at Megadeth, Anthrax, Metallica and even Motorhead at the time. They were all doing this to some extent. Listen to the lyrics from this album and tell me its Glam. Listen to “Downtown Hanoi.” There's nothing Glam here except the bad hair (again, which everyone was doing, except Kerry King, who lost it all). You see big hair and ignore everything else? Why doesn't Vanity/Nemesis get the same hate, when it was done in the same style?
    People hate on this album because they're told to. They're repeating what they think they're supposed to say. Tom calls CL an “abomination.” He wasn't saying that at the time. Did someone else write this? Was there a pistol to his head? Tom Warrior didn't do himself any favors by lacerating himself over it years later. Would Tom have said the same things if this record were a success? The fans already abandoned them after “Pandemonium” anyway, so I guess if it isn't Bathory rehashing the same downtuned root and fifth chords over and over again, it isn't worth their time.
    “Cold Lake” is a decent metal album and it would be respected if it wasn't accompanied by stone-wash jeans and Tom's indulgent self condemnation after the fact. It's a dark, serious metal album if anyone bothered to read the lyrics; maybe its not “The Usurper,” but if they kept doing the same thing, they'd be condemned for being “stale.” He can't win.
