I had an absolutely fantastic time at the Aquatic Expo in Charlotte this weekend! There was something there for everyone, whether you’re into freshwater or marine aquariums. I said wasn’t going to go home with a fish… technically, I didn’t go home with A fish. I came home with multiple fish. I came home with a neon blue ram, a small school of green neons, and a longing green dragon pleco. I also brought home some gorgeous rock structures I’ll be using in a cichlid aquarium. The aquascaping competition was incredible to watch! The scapers had one hour to create their masterpieces. They did not disappoint! There were two kids competing, who did such a great job that you would have thought their scapes were done by a more experienced scaper. I even met Jeff Miotke! He was super nice! I will be connecting with him in the future to bounce some ideas off of him for some of my future scapes. The Aquatic Expo was a fantastic experience! I highly recommend anyone even remotely interested in the hobby.

    Awesome discussion guys
Been in the hobby for 3+ years I’m
A hobbyist breeder with 8 tanks and I still have yet to make a show. I can’t wait to be able to. It will be a 5 hour drive at minimum with 3 toddlers and my wife to make one. Having options on the table makes it feel more obtainable

I flew out to Daytona from California last year and I had a blast meeting everyone but came away largely disappointed because I couldn't bring much home with me. There's definitely not enough shows in Southern California. I can't even think of one that includes the freshwater hobby.

As a New Hampshire resident, I agree with the travel time. I could fly yet that would decrease what I could bring back. Daytona is more possible as I could autotrain to Sanford and drive over, then a 2-3 day trip back. Granted if there was a KGTropicals show in NC... Having one near Boston or the surrounding towns is much more doable. There a quiet a few venues including Foxborough if you wanted to Patriots Place/Gillette stateum. :) Most shows in the NE are local clubs and not too near me.

Maybe for certain areas, yes. I have yet to hear about or see an aquarium show in Colorado. And with mom and pop fish stores charging outlandish prices, it only encourages Amazon shopping. A single orange platy is $3.99 at petsmart, $9 at the small business. Even the foods are ridiculously cheaper literally anywhere else.

There's a very good chance that the Aquarium Nation Expo in Houston will be bigger than Aquashella this year. This one is more hobbyist based and less big companies. Last year was their first year, and they had over 8,500 in attendance.

I’ve attended two shows in my short (3 year) time in the hobby - FinDig in Sacramento, and the recent Aquashella in Dallas. I really look forward to learning from the speakers. Walking through the same vendors multiple times over two days was too much. Scaping competition was cool.
I much preferred the smaller FinDig event. The speakers/topics were more interesting at FinDig (most, not all…). Dallas just seemed to have too many saltwater and terrarium-ish topics, or speakers simply talking about how they built their business. These just didn’t interest me. The aquascaping demos and Jason and Flips impromptu discussion on quarantining were the best.
Aquashella also had way too many saltwater vendors for my taste. Their displays were cool but just not my thing. Other vendors were very nice and helpful. The RUclips area didn’t seem to have many Tubers but my favorites were there - Jason and Joanna!!! Such super nice people!
Others I met were also nice - the Flip gang (so fun), MJ, MD and Garden of Eder…
In summary - Aquashella was…ok. I’ll try some smaller events in the future instead.
FYI…FinDig is in Sacramento on June 22 and 23. It is pretty much fish and shrimp only (no birds, etc.). Certainly some suppliers/vendors too. Among the speakers are Gary Lange (rainbow fish) and Alex (Fishtory) for example.
Sorry this was so long…Thanks for the podcast guys!

The Triple Crown was a great idea in theory, but there was a huge problem. Now, I'm just going off what I was told, because it took place the same weekend as my youngest daughter’s wedding and had I missed that to go to a "fish thing", I'd still be on damage control two years after the fact. The problem was People. People were, are and always will be the problem. There was so much infighting and bigotry between the different clubs, it kind of ruined the experience for msny of the RUclipsrs I spoke with. That might even be why they didn't do it again in 2023 (although, maybe that was planned. I don't mean to sound like I'm in the know on this).

A roving show that goes to major markets would "on the surface" sound like a good idea, but there does not seem to be enough people in the industry to put on a good show without staying on the road all the time. Plus tanks are much harder than setting up a tattoo convention or a home show. It's a conundrum for sure.

I have to agree with John 95% but having gone to multiple "shows" something i have to point out from my experience all "shows" are not the same and thats a good thing their objectives and missions are not the same. To group them all together is like saying all races are the same and compare NASCAR, a horse race like the Kentucky Derby and a foot race. Yes theyre all races but the idea of combining them wouldnt work. Saying the ACA convention, keystone clash and aquashella are all the same is painting with too big a brush. Theyre trying to do different things and appealing to different audiences. For example me personally the ALA appeals to me and i would drive 12 hours 1 way to go to it but have no desire to attend aquashella even if it were 20 miles from my house. I know aquashella is a good event and many people like it but its not my thing. Aquashella is the type of event that would benefit to travel. The national organizations like the AKA, ALA, ACA etc benefit from traveling for a different reason but some of the other events like the keystone clash, Fishtoberfest, Findig, OCA Extravaganza benefit from the fact theyre in the same location at the same time every year. You could combine events with similar styles, audiences and goals but to try to combine a horse race and a stock car race would damage both most likely. Good discussion though, guys. I'm sure it will get a lot of discussions going and a lot of interaction to help build the hobby.

I would argue you are thinking about it more from a vendor perspective than an attendee perspective. Honestly, I have no desire to go to large vendor driven shows like aquashella. Your considering them all to be the interchangeable and they are just not that way and I really would hate for it to turn into that. And having attended a few different conventions where they combined multiple subjects together like the triple crown, I honestly didn't like it. There was to many things going on at the same time and people had to pick one thing vs the other so you missed out on too many things if you were interested in more than one of the subjects.

  • @gabdewulf
    @gabdewulf 2 месяца назад

The problem with the Keystone clash movong, is many of those club members wouldn't travel.
The other thing to remeber is bigger is not better for attendees. Gencon is the biggest gaming convention and is the least fun convention. Indy can't handle the influx of peoples plis the crowds are so massive, even getting around the convention becomes a line.
Aquashella could be more useful travelling within a zone. I'm going to chi aquashella first time this year but that's only because I moved to the east coast.

Almost everything you speak of is 'East' of the Rockies. If on the west coast, unless you live in L.A. or Seattle areas...there scant few shows of any substance.
