    I have heavily planted tanks and dont usually change water unless im raising fry or useing medication to treat disease. The nitrate levels in most of my tanks never reach higher than 10ppm and i think thats mostly do to the plants taking in all those nutrients to build there leaves and stems, which i then trim essentially removing those nitrates from the system.

      2.5 months in and no water change yet…heavily planted and stocked (stalked?) and nitrates never above 25. Supplementing with Easy Green which has additional minor nitrogen. So far, no plans to do anything but evaporative replacement.
      At some point will do water changes…to get rid of trace minerals buildup (water very soft), not for nitrogen.

    I have a 75 gallon tank that I have in place for 10 years. I have 5 discus, 4 rainbow, 4 cats, a few glow fish. I top off with RODI 5 gallon at a time as needed. I do water tests every 1 -2 weeks. I only feed once every 2-3days. I have not had to do a water change in 5 months as my test parameters are very good. I vaccum every 3 weeks or so. This works for me quite well.

    I have both styles of tanks setup(planted and large cichlid s)
    My 125 is a Frontosa colony(6 large/medium) and 2 large Angels. Use to do water changes weekly but now i grow house plants on top with roots in tank (pothos, monstera, peace lily, lucky bamboo). Doing this i change water once every 2 months or longer now.

    I just came back to having tanks. it's been 30 years and a lot has changed. I'm 59yrs young. Anyways I been learning so much and have never had a tank with dirt, sand, and live plants. I am going to try it in a nano tank with my 2 guppies I got from Dan. If it goes good then I will do it with my 2 betta tanks I got them imported from Taiwan so I don't want to try it with them 1st. I love plants so am excited to do this. I will be doing water changes since I have well water. I live in Superior Wi. So heaters on my tanks is a must in the winter. also I am watching the whole podcast with complete attention.

    My South/Central American large species cichlid tank isn't as enormous as John's 360, but even at 210 gallons, I have to do two large water changes every week to keep the nitrates at bay.
    My other tanks get a big water change once a week. My community tank is getting stocked heavily enough now that I'll probably have to increase it to twice a week, as well.
    On each tank, I have one Python draining the water into a sump pump well until it's just above the canister's intakes (just before they lose siphon). At that point, I take a second Python and start the refilling process, BUT, I also keep the first Python draining while that's happening. I have no idea what the percentage equates to, but I usually just tell people it's roughly 70%.

    Great info. Because of my pluming and smaller tanks a Python is not needed. I have a power siphon/gravel cleaner that goes into a bucket. The bucket is poured outside for a 2 foot circle of the nicest grass in the neighborhood. Sure the rest of the lawn looks like crap but that small area looks great. I found my tanks do well with a every 2 weeks water change and every 4 weeks filter clean.
    If I get my dream of a 125+ for an Oscar, then I will get the plumbing correct for a python and pick one up.
    As far as the format, I like the youtube format and the freezing is not an issue as the audio works. Been on so many video calls since COVID I don't notice it anymore. I watch these while I am at the gym and like to see the Oscars try to grab the spotlight :)

    I don’t care what people say. I do water changes, sometimes more than once per week if ammonia is detected or nitrates build higher than 20 ppm. Even if I knew nothing about the effects of nitrogen cycle on fish, I look at it simply as my fish swimming in their pollution. I would not bathe in toilet water or reuse my bath water. I don’t expect my dog to eat out of a dirty bowl or drink water from a bowl with food debris floating in it. If people care about their pet fish, why would they do less for their fish?

    There is no debate here… Water changes aren’t just about things naturally occurring in a tank!
    Water changes thin out the Lysol, Pledge, Febreze, scented candles, grease from cooking, etc. These things WILL accumulate over time in your water. Water changes continuously dilute them.

    I have 8 tanks running and the water changes became a real chore. I put all of them on an auto water change system that changes out a small amount every three hours, totaling 10% per day. I found that it has an additional benefit for dosing. The tanks stay at the same tds as my water supply. I dose when the TDS drops below 20 ppm over my water supply reading.

  • @crystalc9036

    In the interest of not wasting water, I do run a hose from my tanks to flower bed even in the winter, water house plants with tank water, fill drip containers in garden with tank water. And using hoses is way easier than the bucket method. I run water into a bucket from the dollar store in the sink and a pond pump in the bucket to move water from the sink to my tanks. I prefer that way to react to changes in water temp if it turns warmer than I want for my fish.

    I have a 37 gallon and 55 gallon both freshwater tanks. The 55 gallon is a planted tank, and the 37 gallon at the moment only has one live plant. I use the classic Home Depot 5 gallon buckets filled to 4 gallons. I change the water on the 37 gallon using one bucket per week and 2 buckets at 4 gallon at 55 gallon. I’m going to up the changes on the 37 gallon because I put driftwood in and the talons keep coming turning the water darker. By the way, the movie is Tommy Boy!!!

  • @baileyf1998
    @baileyf1998 2 месяца назад +1

    My heavily planted 55g aquarium gets a 30% water change weekly. My aquarium could probably go up to a month before nitrates would exceed 30ppm. But I change the water for two reasons. First I'm a creature of habit, I find that If I don't put myself on a strict schedule I often times forget to do whatever that is required all together. Secondly, it's a good time to remineralize the aquarium and add any fertilizers, trim plants or whatever else is needed. But on my 8g co2 injected shrimp tank, I do 1/4 gallon water changes every other day. I do this since shrimp are sensitive to changing water parameters and because again I want to remineralize to ensure the plants have everything they need and that the shrimp have the calcium and everything they need.

I also like fish that are highly colored enough so that i can see them without squinting. I like a contrast between fish color and tank. Sometimes i hear, “these fish have such beautiful colors” and I think “they do? They look grey/brown to me with tiny amt of color if a really stare at them. Give me a wagtail red platy any day!

    From how it was explained to me, the plants take in ammonia, more then they take in nitrates. So, plants prevent the ammonia from being converted into nitrites/nitrates in the first place. Different plants take in more nutrients than others.
    I've been using a small pump with sensor on it to fill up tanks. It's slow, but I have another larger pump that doesn't have sessor to suplement and fill quicker. If I need to do something like fill another bucket with more water, I just let the small pump with a sensor keep filling whileI do that.

    You never have to suck on the hose. Just submerge the intake until it's full, pull it out of the and let the water start to drain. Before all the water is out of the 12 to 18 inches of gravel siphon, re-submerge, and it will continue to drain. It works every time.

  •  4 месяца назад +1

    Dan's Fish uses a heat exchanger to warm up the water coming into the facility. It's basically a big cylinder tank with what is similar to an automotive radiator inside. The water leaving the facility is in the tank and the 'new' water coming in goes through the radiator. This gets the new water warmer and the old water cools off some before it leaves the facility to go back to the creek.
    After the incoming water leaves the heat exchanger, it goes to a heater to bring it up to the temp they use. All this is in one of his videos. It's a pretty cool setup.

    I can't see how a deep substrate for anaerobic bacterial growth to process nitrates can work. Anaerobic bacteria grows without oxygen at the bottom of the substrate. Which means no water flow at that level. Humm, the nitrates are in the oxygenated water and never flows that deep in the substrate.
    Back in the sixties when I started in the hobby the owner of my favorite LFS taught me a lot. As far as water changes he explained that we can measure for nitrates, but there's other reason for doing water changes. He first said dead dirty water out and fresh clean water in. As you mentioned Jason, replacing necessary minerals, removing such things as hormones, etc.
    EDIT:
    I always watch on RUclips and the little glitches don't bother me.

    Thanks for the great topic. I have both heavily planted tanks and a Lake tanganyika biotope, no plants. On that I'm trying the anoxic filter in a canister filter. Mixed results as of yet. Plants are definitely key. The more plants there are, the easier the maintenance. The science behind the anoxic filtration seems sound, but I'm not sure any home aquarium can actually develop those conditions enough to actually make a difference on nitrates. Meaning the scale in a home aquarium may just be too small for it. We'll see... But if I instead put a large sump in and heavily plant that sump and light it, then I may have a winner.

    Jason is absolutely correct about the plants doing more of the nitrate removal than the anaerobic bacteria.

    • @im160bpmplus
      @im160bpmplus 4 месяца назад

      I disagree. Bacteria is the most dominant thing on the planet. I grow a large amount of macro algae and the way to export nitrate is to remove growth matter; not display it, the growing of the macro algae is 1/3 of the process. Leaving it also creates decay which adds to detritus. Anaerobic bacteria is able to rapidly remove nitrate but requires skimming or it can be toxic- thats what is missing from anaerobic filtration in freshwater.. you have to skim the gas out.

    • @AMNitrates
      @AMNitrates 3 месяца назад

      @@im160bpmplus I don’t disagree with you. Obviously biofloc systems in aquaculture have been using bacteria for nitrate reduction for years. I just don’t believe you can maintain a large enough colony in typical highly oxygenated aquariums.

      @@AMNitrates Nothing can match the brute force reduction of water changes.. A Nitrate Reactor is essentially a canister filter so blocked up it only trickles out with extremely low flow like 10gal/h. 3 inch sand bed create Anerobic areas; thats why you shouldnt stur sand up as it creates the gas release. BioBalls that are incredibly dense also create it but need low flow areas as high flow areas have balls making Aerobic bacteria, which is what converts nitrite to nitrate.
      In other parts of the hobby Nitrates havent been a problem for about a decade now, in reefing the big guys actually dose nitrate just to keep 1-3ppm as the filtration these days is so strong its too much. Origination levels of a fresh and saltwater tank are about the same 300-400mv. The science points to the non removal of the gas and gas exchange more so than a lack of bacteria. Surface skimmer, protien skimmer, biopellets carbon dosing and just stuff like plain old sugar dosing. You can dose plain sugar to a freshwater tank with nitrates and it will feed the bacteria that creates the gas.

      @@im160bpmplus I’ve been attempting to create a nitrate reactor recently with a canister filter full on matrix. Super undersized for my 125 gallon. However, I’m not sure how to carbon dose it. Honestly however, water is cheap here in Texas so doing water changes is probably the superior method.

      @@AMNitrates Sugar is the easiest. What you need to do is leave the reactor with media filled with water and a carbon source sit for a few days to seed it.
      I just hit 240ppm with my tank last month because of an accident, I did a 50%change and a 30% over the last 2 weeks and its about 100ppm now, Water was the ONLY thing that can achieve those results. You cant filter out 100ppm with a nitrate filter, but carbon dosing will plateau the nitrate creep im adding by continuing to feed my fish.

    Would love to see you discuss the type of water to use for aquariums. I have 3 types of water - tap - softened, tap - unsoftened and RO (have a system in my kitchen). My tap unsoftened is the cold water only, so I'd have to be able to warm it. I don't use any mineralizers. My PH got too low using just RO, so had to mix in some cold water tap (warmed). What's the best water to use, should you use mineralizers, etc. I don't like chemicals in my tank so a good discussion on mineralizers would be helpful. Love the show!

    I'm watching 4 days after it posted. I love watching the video vs listening. I like seeing the tanks if you reference them and facial expressions. The buffering or delays in the video don't bother me at all.

    I love my python. I discovered by accident I had enough vacuum to drain my tank, through 40ft of hose to my muck sink. I just run the water to fill the hose, hit the bypass and shut the water off. Takes awhile, but its better than lugging buckets out of a 75 gallon. Plus I think the gradual change might be less stressful for the fish too.
    Also, hygger makes a water change hose system if the python is too spendy. 47 dollars for the 45 foot hose. If you got a big tank, and a sink you don't mind fish tank water draining into..its a good investment. What else you can do is run a long hose from a bucket with a cheap pond pump in it, basically run your water change hose into the bucket like normal, have the pump in the bucket hooked to a hose going outside, to a sink..whatever.

    Father Fish has a RUclips video on what to do with large fish. You can keep Oscars in a deep substrate aquarium and big mother amazon sword plants, you can also set up a refugium with plants in the sump to help with nitrate consumption. I have been keeping fish for over 20 years and my fish keeping hobby changed when I discovered the balanced natural aquarium in Diana Walstad's book The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium and the wise old time fish keeper Father Fish. It is not in the best interest of the fish industry for people to learn about natural aquarium because you simply do not need to buy all that unnecessary junk and fish supplies they try to sell you with a synthetic aquarium.
