I have been so lucky in the last year. I have a 5 gallon of 10 gallon and a 20 gallon.
And I have not quarantined any fish
Now I'm scared to death to get another one
And yes, I know that if I get a gallon, it'll go on the stand. I have on the porch and I'll end up with another tank instead of a quarantine tank.

At about :26, agreed! When I had to move, it would have cost me over $1k to relocate my fish room. The movers were just dumbfounded. I simply put an ad on Facebook, and before I knew it, the room was completely empty! I see it as saving $1k, so I could happily start over, which is not a bad thing.

This is such an important topic, and one that is easy to dismiss until you have a problem. Similar to John's story about Lisa's aquarium, I had an aquarium with about 12-14 rainbowfish plus other tankmates that had been up for a couple of years. I bought a school of 8 Odessa Barbs and added them right away. Within a week, I lost all but 1 of my rainbowfish to what I believe was epistylis. Whatever it was, it ran through the aquarium like wildfire. I would find 2-3 fish every morning that had died and did show any issues the day before. It was devasting seeing these full grown rainbowfish drop like flies. Everyone, please quarantine your fish before adding them to your tanks!

I'm 110% on quarantining new fish. I can also say I'm 110 % never did it. With 2 Beta only tanks (5 gal) , and 1 neo-shrimp tank (5 gal), 1 Puffer tank (10 gal- 2 puffers and a Anano shrimp), and a 75 saltwater tank, looking at the store tanks, fish, and anything that doesn't look good in a tank, buying from a (maybe only marine seller in Ct.) I've never had an issue with disease.

Oh yeah! I just this weekend bought a fish (of course it was a gift for my wife.)
Been to the store twice before super clean and nice, all fish lived...but Saturday there was Xs all over the tanks for no sell. Gambled on a $10 pea puffer..which didn't make 24 hours.
Even the stores you trust can have troubles.

You two reminded me of a very expensive education. Never ever medicate a new heavy new planted aquarium. 40 gal plus tanks. When I was ahem young I got 24 ember tetras and used my new 40 breeder as a quarantine tank since it's new. I never considered my plants, which was destroyed due to medication. Never again. I do dumb things but thank goodness I'm not stupid. lol

Definitely one of the biggest gambles I take since I’m not allowed to have a 2nd tank of any size, shape, or form. Not even a plastic tote because my dad says “it still counts as a 2nd tank”. Being very picky with which fish stores I buy fish from has helped and I haven’t had any ich or other disease outbreaks since 2016 (knock on wood), except for a bizarre species-only die off in early 2023 that only targeted an entire school of roseline sharks when I made the mistake of trusting a bad fish store, but my bala sharks, rainbow shark (bought from same place), and cories were fine. Went back to my trusted fish stores afterwards and everything has been fine since.

I've got medications on hand in case of emergencies, but I keep new fish in a half-assed "tank" for a week in 1/3 water from the current tank it's going into, 1/3 new water & 1/3 the water they came with. The tank water I use comes from the neighbor's pond which is full of all kinds of critters that outnumber potential parasites.

LIKE! Sorry my phone is getting old! But absolutely 💯 the simplest answer is prevention and proactive care. If I ever had any doubts for sure this will set me straight and make the right call for the fish and not my approval. Or as I like to say, never be afraid to do enough! It’s calling it short over time or effort and even cost that makes problems grow and take longer with far more effort and costs much more, maybe even life! Love it! Stay happy and healthy my friends 😊❤

wonderful podcast, the question I have: I tried playing the quarantine game: I always keep the sponge filter running in my display tank as a second filter (I used it with the quarantine tank), I use Fritz 7 to add more useful bacteria, I feed once a day, 5 Gal tank. I have tried quarantining panda cories 2 times there, all fish dead in matter of days most die on one day, which leads me believe it can be an ammonia spike, but how so with the cycled filter and fritz 7????, I have drip acclimated the fish before letting them into the tank, feed once a day, temperature around 75 degrees.

I am starting to think may be my display tank has something that the rest of my fish is not bothered by, but the new fish once exposed get sick and die, but within one week??? And all the fish in my display tank are thriving and breeding like crazy.

I will be quarantineing from now on. To start, I don't know of these fish had a disease or if it was pure coincidence. I bought five Tetras from who I've bought most of fish and put them in my Super Red Pleco grow out tank. The next morning, one of the Tetras was dead, with no signs of anything. Within the next 4 four days, I lost one Tetra a day. Everything was fine until approximately two weeks later my wife leaves for work at 1:00 PM, with no problems. I get home from work at 4:00 PM to find 35 out of 40 baby plecos dead. By the next day, the other 5 were dead. I tale that tank down, then about 3 weeks after that, the tank next to it that had more baby plecos and the breading parents went to hell. Another 30-40 baby plecos dead, and within 3 days, the adult breading pair are dead. I starting dosing the tank with meds and was fortunate enough to be able save my Angel Fish. So those $50 of fish most likely lost me around $800 in the plecos that I was selling all because I didn't quarantine.

So, The Professor has been keeping fish the same length of time as I have. Roughly 1980.
I have quarantined fish for a year a few times, just because I'm paranoid. Not all the time, but its always longer than a month. When was the last Quad City Swap? My corys are still in quarantine and will be for some time. My red frontosa are still in quarantine and I bought them two Greenwater swaps ago.

What about using a salt bath as a preventative/curative. This used to be a big thing in the hobby. There's no increase of medicine resistance, but I wonder if going from the shop's water parameters to a slightly salt increase then back to our 'normal' parameters would increase stress on the fish? I'm talking of a minimal salt concentration, or if the level is that low, would it even be useful for the health of the fish? Thoughts??

  • @ItsLaurenE
    @ItsLaurenE 3 месяца назад

I can't tell you how many times I've explained in beginner groups how imperative it will be to quarantine no matter where the fish is from. I've seen "they are from a trusted seller/store/breeder" great stress alone can cause illness, your water parameters vs how they were kept can be different even if your nextdoor neighbor gifts you a fish. @primetimeaquatics Jason, I've spoken with managers at local petcos in Cook & DuPage keeping their tanks slightly brackish. plopping them into an established tank, they stress out, any people are perplexed why the tank now has illness and blame the box stores.
    * It's important to note YOUR TANK CAN CAUSE ILLNESS TO NEW FISH VS THE NEW FISH. (oops jason literally just said this)
    * I also mention both your channels as breeders/sellers, and Cory from aquarium co op who stress quarantining . *I'll note too knowing before swaps Jason and Joanna QT fish. Asking what meds they used may also help so you don't run your process and accidentally OD fish they may need time in non medicated water to adjust then dose.
☆ THE ONLY TIME I'd add new fish to an established tank would be if I'm swapping some of my fish from my other tanks and plan on running a preventative dose in that tank, or if I'm setting up a new tank with well established media in which case they are the only occupants anyway.
❤ just know I've learned so much from both you and your lovely wives!
The amount of times I say at a store my fish are going into QT and the team members are blown away saying I'm the 1st customer they've heard talk about that. It's crazy. Sorry so long. If you see this novel comment.

Regarding fishmeds: if you do a fishmeds episode, please, *please* remember that you have lots of non-american fans here, and fish medication availability through most of europe and canada is very similar... And horribly limited.
So *please*, particularly if you uave an industry expert guest, get them to talk about their recommends for people in other countries like Canada and the United Kingdom.
Fritz DOES sell some products here in Canada, for example, but the selection is very limited and this becomes a whole subject that is very difficult for the rest of us.
Thwres a LOT of videos discussing how and what to treat with for Americans, but very little to nothing for the rest of us.

So if my discus shop goes and buy fish directly from the breeder, I don't need to do preventive medication. Only quarantine. But if I want add rumynose tetra, who are most of the time wild caught, I do use preventive medication? Not because the are sick from the parasites, but because the discus can be. Or would only do the quarantine with the rumynose?
