I just found your channel today and I've subscribed for the simple reason you've pronounced the name "Betta" properly. For many years now people who work in aquarium shops have been calling this fish a "Beta", pronounced like the Greek letter. I don't know why this annoys me so much, but it does. Your advice is spot on, thanks.
@@cheers2023 long enough to be an accepted variant imo lol, backing up and saying 'bayta, wait no, bettah' is a lot more intrusive to the conversation than just forgetting and slipping into more colloquial dialect. The ones that get ME: it's Godeeeeva chocolate- call Belgium, see how they answer the phone!- the g in misogyny is a hard GREEK g, pronounce it!- as annoying as someone saying 'Jeeradelli chocolate', and insisting in Italian the g is soft (while you're internally screaming 'Not followed by an aitch!') and THERE IS NO ACCENT ON THE FINAL E IN FORTE. It's 'fort', and I have been known to consider proper usage as an informal IQ test. Wow...this is such an amazing video! Just in 30mins I've learned so many things I didn't know like blue green algae is bacterial (never had) only keep food about 1mth not the 3yrs it says it expires and that totally makes sense, stray electrical currents which is really scary thinking about my babies being shocked 24/7. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us!
I love your videos, they are so informative. I do have a question about guppies, I am at a loss what to do. I am in the UK and I can't get hold of general cure, I tried pimafix and melafix together as suggested and tried dosing my tank with salt, then changed 30% and tried an anti internal bacterial treatment but lost 4 of 6 guppies. Nitrite 0 nitrate 0 pH 6.5-6.8 gh 120 kh 40. I am gutted. Planted tank, there are other fish in there and they are all fine. Guppies presented with bloating and dropsy, other 2 that died opposite way, really skinny and signs of fin rot but melafix did nothing for them. Any suggestions from anyone appreciated. 2 left but 1 of them looks a little bloated also. I did try peas too... 😉
Gemma Triggs I’m having the same problem getting medications for my fish here in the uk since I moved from Florida where I could get anything I needed. I’m no expert but the fact you have zero nitrite is not good, if your tank cycled you should always have some nitrite, ideally less than 20ppm. For all I know I should have said nitrate instead of nitrite or I’ve got my parts per million wrong so just check it out. It’s the last part of the nitrogen cycle, It usually means your tank lacks beneficial bacteria and never fully cycled.
I’ve been back in the hobby for almost two years, I have 5 tanks and more recently started using live plants. This video has been more insightful than any other I’ve seen so far! Great job and thank you for all the great information and keep it up

IT was 3am i was really tired, but THANKFULLY I did check the water chemistry. This video is the incredibly insightful. Ty for sharing all of your fishy wisdom. This video is pretty long and hard to navigate, maybe a time stamp with subjects would be helpful!
Hey Cory, thanks for the tips. I think some time stamps in the description would be really nice for these 2 hour videos tho, maybe something to think about. At least in the long ones where you go into many different subjects.
wow that info about the food! i dont know why thats the last thing ive thought. my poor betta has probably been eating the same pellets from the same jar for a year. im gonna go change that right now!!
Right?? I went out and bought a new jar of food, last night because of this episode! I was like "oh crap, he's right! No wonder they've been less enthusiastic..."
Stumbled across this and just thought it was another how to video witch was the same as all all rest. But 1min into watching I knew it was going to be very interesting and knowledgeably and not like the common how to and what not to do video. Being a fish breeder for over a year now and fish keeper for over 2 years now. I learnt heaps from this and recommend this video to any fish keeper Wether your a beginner or expert. Great video man. You 100% got a follow from me and can't wait to check out all your other video.
Cory, thanks for making this video.Great info for newbies and seasoned aquarist...awhile ago I had saltwater reef tank and had a powerhead short out..well the fish were electrocuted....Very bad day, losing fish is like losing a friend(this may sound silly to some) but as for the corals, weirdly enough they were actually stimulated, grew and opened up like never before,I'm not crazy nor do I recommend anyone shock their tank but I think maybe someday studies will be done on electric current and the beneficial results...as for a great diatom filter,I use a filter sock and a powerhead, works great, same results using fiber fill in a hob filter
Even though I've been in the hobby for 15+ years, and, been lucky with basic upkeep and care with all the fish I've had, after getting a new batch of fish in January, and, losing 2 green terrors, and,a blue acara in less than 2 weeks, and watching videos like yours and others, I,1: saw how stress and parameters (water flow, overfeeding, etc) affect fish, and,2: it made me be more diligent in my upkeep of the tank..,so, again, even though I been in the hobby for years, I'm always learning. Thanks, informative video.
I came across this video while searching for what could be wrong with my new setup. Fully planted, 3 month cycle, all parameters perfect. But fish not eating. Thanks to you Cory and my multimeter I discovered that a powerhead was leaking electricity. Quick replacement, tested good and now my fish are very happy and extra hungry. Huge appreciation from me and my fishes for everything you do :)
Hi Corey, I don’t know if you remember me or not, but I was the tall guy at the aquatic experience in Chicago 2018, I took the group picture.😉 i’m sure you’ve thought about it but I was wondering if you think you might get to a point where you’ll have your own research and development department, maybe to produce your light, or some of the other ideas that you’ve talked about. Was just curious, I’ve watched you grow over the years, I wish more corporations followed your lead! Hopefully they will, thanks for all you go to the hobby!
Sir, your knowledge helps me to understand what is waiting for me later. Just got my tank and all this is great to know before hand. Kudos to you 👏 🙌 👍. And plenty of thanks!
omg I do the white sour cream container!!!!!! I never knew it was like a thing but also what a crazy coincidence!!!!!!!!!! love hearing your knowledge. keep up the great work!!! I live for a peek into the mind of Cory! thanks man!!
@23:00Stray current can come from damaged built-in uv lights in canister filters. I was forced to wear shoes during water changes and feeding time. The moment I switched off the UV light everything was fine
I lost a betta and almost another due to bad food. I didn’t realize what was happening right away. I only switched my other betta to new food as a last resort and it really helped! Also, food size is a big thing to watch out for too. My other tanks have dwarf gourami, and they are pigs. They out eat everything else in the tank. So I have to mix smaller food in so they don’t over eat and bloat up.
Good comments on 'heaters and health.' (1:40), and the contribuiton of sumerged pumps. When motors 'slowly' go bad, or their bearings 'go bad'... they INDEED generate heat as a result, so 'touching' one's 'mechanicals' to be 'familiar' with 'normal' of such heat output is a good direction (just as you wisely mentioned of 'knowing' the tenacity of 'bubble spread' at the surface, and general 'smell' of the tank). When it comes to 'heaters' I also always note the 'required' wattage 'max' I need, and then use TWO heaters that each are rated at 'half' the total required max. Why?... Because heaters fail! The 'mechanicals' can stick 'full on' and the 'solid state tend to fail: full off. With TWO filter a failure of BOTH at the same time is 'unlikely,' and the daily scan of the temp will tell if 'something' has failed. The tank will never 'go cold' or too hot when the heater eventually fails (they ALL DO eventually!).
Hi, could I please request you make a “highlights” clip of this type content? Ideally try for below 10 minutes. I find you have very practical advice and relatable examples for fish keepers although at 2 hours is a deterrent to watch. I still hit the like button!
I opened this video, saw the length, sighed, and thought exactly this. Please make a highlights version so we can pick up some tips without sitting here all morning. :')
I actually love this kind of long content because I have am busy I can watch it over the span of a week just because it’s interesting to me. I can see where you guys are coming from though. In my opinion there is too many things to cram into 10 minutes because so much is important. Have a great day!
I love watching the live streams, length and all -- but I do think it would be nice to have shorter videos highlighting some of the advice you give here (and in other live streams), with a title that makes it easy to find for later rewatching...
When I open pellet or flake I put a month’s worth in a small container and vac seal the rest.(food saver). I feed mostly fresh but it’s a bit of messing around so some days they get dry. They seem to love it just as well.

When I kept fish tanks, I utilized bottom feeders and MYACIN to combat many of my fish ailments. I did get BLUE GREEN ALGAE once or twice. Once when my tank was new and uncycled.

Man I’m catching up on as much of your videos as I can ,,, in two months I went from finding a cool looking blue crayfish at petsmart and slapping him in a tank to having 5 tanks ,,3 29 gallon tanks ,a 55 and a ten that’s breeding cobra guppies for my crayfish to eat ….. I have a 56foot by 24 foot garage I’m about to convert into a massive fish room with a killer pond in the middle …. I’m sure you have heard this a million times but thank you for your videos from Prince Edward Island Canada 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
Good comments on big bags of food going bad. I buy in bulk and then break it down into smaller bags that are VACUUM SEALED. It is a great compromise. Cheaper prices by bulk buying & it stays fresh.
Corey, you're a good teacher because of your ability to get it down to a level where EVERYONE can understand... like for example... When I see white colored water & think Nitrosomas Bacteria... it's nothing other than multiplying Bacteria and it's helping my tank's overall stability in the long run... BUT, I realize SOME people think WTF is this milk in here... who poured in the sour cream because they didn't want it to be on their taco... Kid's...!!! You know that the Gymnarchus niloticus does NOT like dairy products in his Central African, shallow, driftwood filled, reedy, rocky, sandy bottomed substrate, 15° of hardness with a pH of 7.8 in the 760 gallon single species only tank water... lol

Cory, thanks for making this video.Great info for newbies and seasoned aquarist...awhile ago I had saltwater reef tank and had a powerhead short out..well the fish were electrocuted....Very bad day, losing fish is like losing a friend(this may sound silly to some) but as for the corals, weirdly enough they were actually stimulated, grew and opened up like never before,I'm not crazy nor do I recommend anyone shock their tank but I think maybe someday studies will be done on electric current and the beneficial results...as for a great diatom filter,I use a filter sock and a powerhead, works great, same results using fiber fill in a hob filter
thumbs up from london uk. keep up the great work bruv
Watched the whole video for a second time and enjoyed it just as much as first time!😉
Hi Cory, I would like to ask if an EXPIRED TROPICAL FLAKES is alright to use for a year after the expiry date?

Thank you Cory!
I spend many evenings watching your great videos and learning. Love your stuff keep it up cheers Mel From down under New Zealand
Your videos are my go to for anything aquarium related information, huge thank you for all your help.
Have been on this recording and others many times and I always learn something new!😀👌👍🏻
I got a bit scared by the bubbles for a bit, but then I remembered I have honey gouramis and floating plants. Panic over haha
Just finished planting from a 5 day shipping wait scared me to death Cory now im sure its just die off i keep trying to rid of doing an ammonia bleep.
I like your approach, and I’m a newbie to this. Pictures (examples) of your topics would be very helpful. Thank you,
omg
I do the white sour cream container!!!!!! I never knew it was like a thing but also what a crazy coincidence!!!!!!!!!! love hearing your knowledge. keep up the great work!!! I live for a peek into the mind of Cory! thanks man!!
I just started a new aquarium after 30 yrs. Thanks for all the info.
I learn so much from you Cory, it’s brilliant and you are a great presenter. Cheers 👍🏻
@23:00Stray current can come from damaged built-in uv lights in canister filters. I was forced to wear shoes during water changes and feeding time. The moment I switched off the UV light everything was fine
UK subscriber.... smashed the bell and learning so much from Cory. Wish I could come and shop over in the US . Shop is looking good Cory. Keep it up.
Have a tank I’ve been filtering and try to stabilize before getting fish. This video was incredibly helpful!
Hi there Cory, I loved this show so much I watched it twice.
So I have to mix smaller food in so they don’t over eat and bloat up.
michael wagner had this happen to dry dog food too.
There are shorter clips of videos, see links on original post by Cory.
I listened to it during my commute :p but I feel ya
The kid with a popsicle analogy was BRILLIANT
I love these live streams!
just love these long form - educational - videos. thanks . subscribed.
thanks for your time and knowledge, it's clear you are passionate about what you speak about. great work brother.
Thank you for sharing so much useful information to help others succeed with fish keeping. Great info.
When I open pellet or flake I put a month’s worth in a small container and vac seal the rest.(food saver). I feed mostly fresh but it’s a bit of messing around so some days they get dry. They seem to love it just as well.
Thanks for all the info!
I learn so much from you.. Thanks for everything 🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟
You helped me save my 50 bby fish fry tonight! My first ever, and my plec’s first time too! 🥰 we all thank you!!!! Such great content. And I love my new salt I got from you guys as well. Cheers!
When I kept fish tanks, I utilized bottom feeders and MYACIN to combat many of my fish ailments. I did get BLUE GREEN ALGAE once or twice. Once when my tank was new and uncycled.
14:30 xD
my puffer fish the little peas they often wait for me to get home and then wait with their faces pushed to the glas watching me what i do xD so cute and how can u not give them sth, when they are so happy about it ;p

I love your videos and I always re watch them. Thank you
Man I’m catching up on as much of your videos as I can ,,, in two months I went from finding a cool looking blue crayfish at petsmart and slapping him in a tank to having 5 tanks ,,3 29 gallon tanks ,a 55 and a ten that’s breeding cobra guppies for my crayfish to eat ….. I have a 56foot by 24 foot garage I’m about to convert into a massive fish room with a killer pond in the middle …. I’m sure you have heard this a million times but thank you for your videos from Prince Edward Island Canada 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
Just wanted to let you know, we now ship to Canada on our website with restrictions on electronics, foods, meds, and plants. www.aquariumcoop.com

LOL, Cory has to be the king of analogies.
This is a great channel, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Brilliant!!! Thank you so much!!!
So much information! Thank you.
Kid's...!!!
You know that the Gymnarchus niloticus does NOT like dairy products in his Central African, shallow, driftwood filled, reedy, rocky, sandy bottomed substrate, 15° of hardness with a pH of 7.8 in the 760 gallon single species only tank water... lol
Yeahhhhhh....
Loving your talks!!
Amazing video! I learnt a lot from it. Tyvm Cory
