Is Installing a Pedal Commander on Your Car Worth It? *Long Term Review*

  • Today I talk about the Pedal Commander and see if it really is a good modification for your car, or just a gimmick? Over the last two years we have installed the Pedal Commander on our Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Supra, Audi R8 and recently the Nissan GTR. The Pedal Commander is basically an electronic programmer that intercepts the throttle pedal signal to the throttle bodies and adjust how quickly your pedal input responds to the actual engine. In the GTR there is a gauge on the screen that shows pedal position in percentage. I demonstrate how in stock mode how when I give my pedal half throttle it goes to the 50% mark. Then putting the Pedal Commander into the Eco mode which is the most conservative mode, you can see how the same throttle position only puts it up to around 20%. The in Sport + mode you can see how just barely tapping the gas puts the position way up to over 70%. It's awesome how when you add a Pedal Commander to your car it makes throttle response now adjustable and so much sharper. The car responds better and its just that one extra way to fine tune your car and make it respond better. The best comparison I have is if you think about your steering wheel. If you turn the wheel 90 degrees, you expect a certain amount of turning from your car. But if you can sharpen your steering to have less input equal that same 90 degree angle, now your car will feel more agile and fun to take corners. The Pedal Commander is the same principle but for the lag in the pedal response. Great upgrade for any car!

    For those wondering, yes you can get full throttle regardless if you bury the gas pedal, but that’s not the point. The point is that during performance driving, you want a more sensitive throttle. More modern & expensive cars have “sport mode” or “race mode” that changes the throttle response for you, but for those who do not have separate drive modes, or want even more customization, this is a good accessory. This is even a bigger deal in manual car becuz of rev matching. If you can get a lot of throttle from a light tap, it helps with heel toeing since you want to spend as little time as possible on the throttle so you can focus on the braking portion.

      I’ve built and tuned numerous 9 and 10 second cars and have never thought to myself, “Man, I wish I had 80% throttle while only pushing the throttle down 20% of the way.” If I want 80% throttle, push the throttle almost all the way down. If I want 20% throttle, barely tap the throttle.

      @@Jason-id3yp I didn’t say that. You can certainly do that, but any delay in the response of the gas pedal can’t be fixed with your foot. Your foot can’t adjust lag in the delay a pedal has..

    I just installed a Pedal Commander on my 2012 Silverado & the difference is night & day! I started the PC on the Sport +1 mode & drove around for a while & as soon as I came off the driveway I noticed the difference. Many people want to say that you just have to put your foot into the throttle, well wrong! The pedal response is instantaneous, so putting your foot down doesn’t work like this does.
    My truck also has had a tune, dual exhaust & a K&N system & now with the Pedal Commander, it’s really f**king fast now!

  • @vanitymirrorss

    I'm so glad I got my PC before looking at it online, people all over love to shit talk this product. I feel like I'm going to go insane if I have to hear someone say to just "push the pedal down farther" or that it's "just a placebo" one more time.
    Like not everyone can/want to tune their ECU, Transmission or Engine. The car community is almost a disaster of gatekeeping and policing what people can and cannot do with their cars.
    I love this product cause it's the spirit of having fun without having to get a loan. My tC went from fun yet frustrating cause the acceleration felt held back with the stock throttle response to an absolute live wire in terms of the peppiness and smoothness the PC gives the throttle and it just feels amazing to get a satisfying acceleration out of it.
    I also found a great use for ECO mode, I get stuck in brain melting stop and go traffic often and it's just annoying to have to stay back enough and very lightly accelerate and brake. With ECO mode I can just press the pedal normally and it gives a nice smooth, slow acceleration where I can easily trail a reasonable amount behind the car in front without tapping the brake.
    Plus with the added benefit of keeping my aftermarket exaust really quiet when it's in ECO, I don't worry about sounding like an asshole while I'm trapped in traffic.

    Does it basically just increase your “resting” RPMs? Or does it actually change the throttle sensitivity without increasing RPMs?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Год назад

      Just throttle reaction. Rpm stays the same in relation to the pedal. There just isn't a gap from when you hit the gas pedal to when the throttle body opens. If you floor it as fast as you can, the throttle body will still only open at a slower rate. This make the throttle body open as fast as you hit the pedal. You have to experience it to believe it

  • @JordanHowellMusic
    @JordanHowellMusic Год назад +1

    To add to what he said in the beginning, basically all car manufacturers now have electronic acceleration. Most all aspects of …driving the car, lol; are electronically controlled, routing thru a ECU. Now. They almost always put in a literal delay. you the driver just end up feeling this as a vague experience of: push the gas pedal; doesn’t all at once add the power that’s actually proportionate to how much more you push the pedal. It “works up to it”. I hope that makes sense.
    So what the pedal commanders do is- you push that pedal-boom-no delay, whatever more throttle you push down, it’s there, doesn’t work up to it first so to speak.
    It’s like If light switches were made to turn lamps on 2 seconds after you use the switch,?? This type of device would eliminate those manufacturer imposed delays. It doesn’t make the speed of light (your horsepower in this odd analogy) quicker, but, yeh the signal transmits the change immediate which in our heads, makes the car faster.
    God, I wanted this to be simple😅

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Год назад

      Couldn't have said it better! Thats exactly it. If you flip a light switch and it takes 2 seconds to turn the light on. Doesn't matter how quick you try and flip the switch. There will always be a delay. This makes it proportional to your throttle input. You go half throttle, it does half throttle in real time. You press the pedal full throttle, it opens full throttle. Great little tool!

    What is the difference between using this and just pressing the pedal down faster?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  8 месяцев назад +1

      It won't matter how fast you push the gas pedal. There is always a built in delay from when the gas pedal gets pushed till the throttle body actually opens. This adjusts the delay so there can be more of a 1:1 ratio of when you push the gas pedal and the car accelerating. Think of flipping a light switch. If there was a programed 1 second delay from when you flip it and the light turning on. It won't matter how quick you flip the switch, there will always be the delay. Now think about being able to adjust that delay to .1 seconds or 0 second. Now the light will turn on as soon as you flip the switch.
      Same concept ;)

    Can this indirectly improve mpg in the sense of getting to cruise speeds quicker and putting less time to get that speed rather than waiting for a slow car to accelerate?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

      Um no? This makes your throttle body react quicker in relation to your throttle input on the gas pedal. There is a built in lag for every car. This removes throttle lag and the throttle body will physically open much quicker as you hit the gas rather then be delayed. Modern cars are all fly by wire throttle. They are electronic, not cable driven like old cars

      Technically no. It just eliminates the pedal lag. However, since it can eliminate the delay in pedal response, that in turn will make the turbos come on sooner when you hit the pedal. So indirectly it does help a bit

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

      Technically it won't get rid of turbo lag. Like I mentioned in the video since it takes away pedal lag, the turbo will react sooner to the pedal response. So the turbo lag will feel slightly less in relation to when you press the accelerator
