Great choice. TBH after working in the commercial and advertising world of photography for over 10 years I can tell you, nobody shoots wide open. In fact its one of the dead giveaways when I look at someone's photos if they're a hobbyist or a working pro. Most of us sit between f/4.5 and f/5.6 with occasional visits down to f/2.8 or f/11 for specific reasons. Aperture is a creative choice. When a client or a portrait is in a location that has been chosen for a reason, why would you want to completely blow out the location? If you don't like the background, pick a better background - chances are its more than 60% of your image. The only time I see wide open shots in advertisements are in ads for lenses. That should tell you something.

@@BokehTherapy Yes video is VERY different and you do tend to see wide open much more. But in video the camera tends to move a lot less. Photographers tend to move around a lot and change their angles constantly, where in video generally you're dealing with much bigger and heavier cameras and very deliberate lighting so the camera only moves when it has to, and not on a whim. Some directors prefer deep focus (Wes Anderson), some more shallow (David Fincher) but it becomes a stylistic choice and on commercial jobs the aperture is adjusted as needed. Keep in mind that depending on focal length, crop and other factors, even shooting f/11 can look incredibly shallow.
You stand out among “camera creators” on RUclips. You mix photographic philosophy with gear and tech. It’s brilliant. You deserve more subs. Keep creating.

Great to see another video from you Jack. Your 35mm F1.4GM video totally convinced me and I picked one up earlier this week! Using it with my A7C and the weight balance feels good.
Instant subscribe! Great channel - love the videos! A7CR user here but I tend to use smaller primes with it so it's interesting seeing you making use of the bigger lenses on it.
Thanks so much Mark! I have tried most of the compact Sony lenses but always ended up carrying more gear because of the optical compromises. Lugging around one or two g masters is manageable for the moment. Love meeting fellow A7CR shooters, more content to come this week!
In my limited time handling both, the 50mm F1.2 did not feel like it was just a lens that was half a stop faster. The rendering and "creamier" bokeh sets itself apart from the 50 f1.4, it looked quite abit more gentle. I'm not sure if i would ever need F1.2 where the depth of field is that shallow but the same can be said for F1.4, we end up buying them anyway. You're definitely blessed to be able to own both at the same time. If weight is not a concern, i'll definitely keep the 50 f1.2. I just cant get over the fact that it weighs more than a 24-70 f2.8 zoom lens and i suppose thats why the 50f1.4 has been a hit since release.

You should have many thousands of subscribers with the quality and interest you are providing . Please don’t get discouraged and stop producing 🙏🙏🙏

I've been complemtating upgrading to the 50mm1.2 canon rf from the 50mm 1.8, but the images i share with family and friends and post on ig, noone can tell the difference. But the $ in my pocket and and savings in weight does make a huge diff, too bad theres no 50mm 1.4 for Canon yet. keep up the great videos and interesting points of view!
I think it depends on intended use but the bokeh is beautiful. I’d use a defuser and maybe a diopter for close up shots. Though I don’t think I’d pay so much for the .2
On sale the f1.4 and f1.2 aren’t too far away in price (in Australia at least) so it is a tough call. Never used diopters, sounds cool! Thanks for watching
I'm actually debating between these 2 lenses. Even though having a lighter lens is great for long shooting hours, but somehow I simply love big and heavy lenses, I love that hefty feel in the hand, and also I heard that f1.2 has a lightly better look in the photos. :) Btw, I love you channel.
If you love big and heavy lenses, the f1.2 feels solid on the bigger Sony bodies. A7IV and later all balance OK. Video goes live tonight, thanks for watching!
I prefer the f1.4 because of the size myself, I mostly shoot travel and street though. Can’t beat the magic of the f1.2 if you don’t mind the size. What do you shoot?
@@BokehTherapy I do own A7R V & A7IV, I’m mostly using Sigma 14-24mm f2.8, and Sigma 24-70mm f2.8, I do have a bunch of vintage primes and Samyang 35mm f1.4. Now I saved some money to buy Sony 50mm f1.2 or 1.4, and I’m struggling to make the right decision.
Compared to your sigma zooms the f1.2 will feel quite light. I’d go with the f1.2 but probably best for you to try handling both at a local camera store? Lots of image samples with the f1.2 in this video so hopefully that helps too.

Both lenses are great, E mount users like us are spoilt for choice when it comes to lenses!

Is the bokeh affected by the a7CR being only EFCS? Have you ever had issues using such fast glass? Thanks!
There may be an effect but not one I have ever seen? All the sample images were shot wide open in this video. Happy shooting!
