The Most Pathetic Scammers at the Pyramids! 🇪🇬

  • The scammers, hustlers and dodgy cops of the Pyramids are the absolute worst parts of Egypt's world wonder! They were hard to avoid, but luckily the kind Egyptian people really made my day!
Today is the much anticipated day! FNALLY, I got to go to the great pyramids! All my life I have wanted to see this world wonder, however, I did not have high hopes since I was told the scams and touts get very annoying and aggressive. It is true they exists and they get annoying, but if you are smart and have your wits, you can just say no until they move on.
The locals here made my day! Lots of them stoped to talk and take photos. But after a few photos, the most puzzling thing happened. I was about to take a photo with a local, until a cop called him over and told him he couldn't take a photo with me, I questioned why and he simply said it's not allowed and it is against the rules. This was very puzzling to me, the locals were not bothering me and I enjoyed the company. Cops suck :(

You're just a LITTLE bit off on your number of blocks guess...
Taking the Great Pyramid of Cheops as an example:
It is 449 ft (137m) high. That is just less than half the height of the Eiffel Tower in Paris (984 ft / 300m), but a good 150 ft taller than the Statue of Liberty in NYC (305 ft / 92m).
Each side of the base is approximately 756 ft (230m) long, and the entire base covers an area of about 13 acres. For reference, an acre is 43,560 sq ft, or the equivalent of a square about 209 ft on each side.
As far as blocks go, there are 2,300,000 blocks in the Great Pyramid, each one weighing an average of 2.5 tons (2.3 metric tons). That's 5,000 lbs, or 2,260 kg, which is about the size of a mid-sized pickup truck.
The mathematics and feats of engineering that went into building the pyramids are AMAZING, even by today's standards...and remember, these structures were built between 2600 B.C. and 1500 B.C....in other words, 3,500 to 4,600 years ago.
HOW they were built has been debated and changed with our evolving understanding of Egyptian society and their capabilities. Anything that is not 100% certain often ends up creating conspiracy theories and crazy ideas...like aliens or superpowered beings.
In reality, they used thousands of slaves (guesses put the number anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 per pyramid), for up to 2 decades to build each pyramid.
Blocks were floated down the Nile on barges from the quarry where they were created, which was about 500 miles to the south, to the build sites during the 4-month flood period each year, and then hauled up to their positions using ropes, pulleys, rollers and levers...using a giant ramp made of brick, earth and sand that was added to piece by piece as the pyramid grew in height.
But the math had to be EXACT, the angles PERFECT, from minute one til they were completed. One small mistake lower down would compound with each level, until they became impossible to fix by the time you reached the top. On the Great Pyramid, for example, each of the 4 corners of the pyramid had to rise at precisely 51.6°, CONSISTENTLY, or they would not meet at the top like they eventually did.
Even today, with our modern technology, building methods and knowledge of mathematics, engineering and so on...we would be hard-pressed to create a pyramid like the ancient Egyptians did. We have created pyramids like the Luxor Hotel in Vegas, out of metal, steel-reinforced concrete, and glass...but we're not trying to build them out of 2.5 ton blocks of limestone that we have to haul 500 miles up a river, then haul up an earth and brick ramp BY HAND as much as 450 feet in the air.
And the Egyptians weren't the ONLY ones building pyramids, either--multiple cultures across Central and South America also built their own unique pyramids.
For example, the Incans of Peru built pyramids as early as 2,600 B.C., around the same time period as the Egyptians. The Mayans, who lived in what is now known as modern-day Mexico, also built pyramids, but much later--around the 3rd to 9th century A.D. (201 A.D. to 899 A.D., give or take).
As awesome as the pyramids were, there were DOZENS of other structures built across the ancient world that didn't survive to modern times, but which were equally as amazing. Many are currently referred to as the "7 Wonders Of The Ancient World".
There have been different lists, depending on who you ask and when...but the TRADITIONAL list includes:
    Great Pyramid of Giza
    Colossus of Rhodes
    Lighthouse of Alexandria
    Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
    Temple of Artemis
    Statue of Zeus at Olympia
    Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Of those 7, the Great Pyramid of Giza is the only one that still exists today.
From the descriptions and estimates of size (especially the Colossus of Rhodes, Library of Alexandria and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon), I think they would rival or even surpass the pyramids for the wonder they would generate if they were still around today.
The ancient world, Roman and Greek Mythology, and History in general, were always my favorite and best subjects in school, and I have continued to study and learn about them long after my schooling was done. 😊😊😊

I wish I could've seen the Library of Alexandria

    • @DukeFan1971
      @DukeFan1971 3 месяца назад +1

@@supremebuffalo6322 I wish I could have seen ALL of it in its prime, honestly. The Library At Alexandria (along with the Lighthouse, which was considered to be one of the 7 Wonders while the Library WASN'T...which, to me, BOTH should have been on the list), the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon especially.
It was said that the Library at Alexandria contained every bit of collected knowledge in the known world on papyrus scrolls, knowledge that was mostly lost for centuries until future scientists rediscovered things, or redid experiments, and so on. The Lighthouse was constructed under the rule of Greek Ptolemy II, who became Pharoah of Egypt, and oversaw much of that country's enlightened period and scientific advancements.
The Colossus of Rhodes was supposed to be approximately 105 feet tall, making it the largest statue ever constructed in ancient times. There were debates on how it was built and where it stood--some accounts said it straddled the entrance to a harbor, but modern thinking dispelled that theory.
Most likely, it had a pedestal close to 60 feet wide, and the statue itself was made of stone, covered in bronze and other metals made from melting down weapons that Rhodes' enemies left behind in their defeat. Unfortunately, it onlu stood for about 5 1/2 decades (280 BC to 226 BC), until an earthquake snapped it at the knees. Later, further destruction took out what was left of it.
And the Hanging Gardens of Babylon supposedly contained flowers and plants from every corner of the known world, and were so extensive that they stood 75-80 feet high, and covered an area 56 MILES LONG. For comparison's sake...the island of Manhattan is only 13.1 miles long. So imagine 4 Manhattans, end to end--THAT'S how big the Gardens were. They were supposedly built around 600 BC, several centuries before the Colossus...but ironically, they were destroyed by the exact same earthquake in 226 BC that felled the Colossus.
The earthquake mostly affected the area around Rhodes, but was one of the 10 worst recorded earthquakes in the history of the world. Modern estimates place it at a 7.2 on the Richter Scale. The death toll was too high to count, and the destruction was widespread. This was long before modern anti-earthquake construction techniques, obviously, so the vast majority of structures couldn't withstand the quake.
This is a brief Wiki article about the earthquake:
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/226_BC_Rhodes_earthquake
And THIS one is a breakdown of how the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World were destroyed (except for the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is the only one still standing):
      www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-history/how-wonders-of-the-world-were-destroyed/
This article describes what the Library at Alexandria contained, according to estimates, and the significance both the Library itself, and Alexandria as well, had in the ancient world, and how many scientific, artistic and other great works resulted from those who walked its halls:
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Alexandria
To me, the ancient world is a mystery, wrapped in an emigma. It has always fascinated me. If I had a time machine, and could go back and observe any time periods I wanted...the first 2 I would choose would be the 60s...and then Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt.
History and Mythology were 2 of my best subjects in school, and I still like to read Homer's Iliad and The Odyssey on occasion (although my ability to do so in the original Latin has gone by the wayside in the decades since I learned how). But to see these structures in their prime, not wiped out or ravaged by time and the elements...THAT would be the most amazing journey I could ever imagine undertaking. 🙂🙂🙂

You can only take photographs of Egyptian citizens if you have their written permission. Do not photograph officials without their consent. Taking pictures of children is not allowed.” I assume this is accurate as it’s on the government website. Do you do any research about the country before going there instead of assuming the laws and culture are the same as the wherever you're from? Egypt actually did have a ban on street photography until sometime last year, so saying "it's a public street," is like, yeah duh, that's why you're not supposed to do that. Restrictions still actively remain in place for children and you definitely recorded that kid and broke the law, you're lucky you didn't have any police interaction

    • @sealontour

It really just depends what you wanna do, some people save no money and just work as volenteers and get by with any means, some travel in luxury. Just find what you wanna do and see the average cost of things mulitplied by the amount of time you wanna leave for

depends also on how long you stay, i bring abt 1500 for clothes jewelry, things to do ect and i stay with my boyfriend and his family so i don’t have to worry about housing but i would recommend a hostel cause u most likely would have other solo travelers around you and the hostels usually host events for their guest. if you want to rent an apartment for a month it’s abt 600 but make sure it has a update kitchen and ac oh and it’s on the 3rd floor up

Also, about the issues you ran into about taking photos...I looked it up, and apparently, they used to have a LOT of strict rules about public photography, only SOME of which was relaxed by the government in August 2022.
Some depends on what KIND of camera you're using. If you're just taking pictures with your cellphone, you're generally fine. Larger and more professional cameras often require permits to use in public, and especially in more private settings.
Certain things are expressly forbidden, such as taking photos of police, military, or places that have strategic importance (like the Aswan Dam, for example). Another no-no is taking photos of children (though what ages are considered children were not exactly specified). That may be why the cop gave you a hard time, and the kids walked away from you.
Breaking certain rules involving photography can result in punishments that include heavy fines, confiscation of equipment, even imprisonment. And jails in Egypt are no joke.
This quote is from the article linked below, which has some pretty good info on photography in Egypt:
"While photography in public places and on the streets of Egypt is now allowed, this change in the rules does not mean that you photograph whatever you want. It’s wise to avoid taking photos of the police or anything that could be considered of strategic or military importance, such as the dams in Aswan. Punishment, even for innocently taken photos, can be imprisonment.
Taking photos of children is not allowed and snapping photos of adults requires their written consent."

ithink the problem is when tourist think their home countrys rules applyto the country they are visiting

    • @DukeFan1971
      @DukeFan1971 День назад

@mrolliepoper Partially. The bigger part is the fact that far too many people do not properly research other countries they're planning on visiting, to see what local laws, customs, or other issues might apply to them.
For example, in certain countries, the typical hand wave we use is considered a high insult to many traditional people. In others, drinking, or eating certain foods, is considered sacrilegious (like eating beef in parts of India, where cows are considered sacred...which is why in burger joints there, burgers are not made out of beef).
So it's always best to know what things are acceptable or not if you're going to visit another country, and plan on going off on your own. If you're on a guided tour, you're usually paired with a guide who knows the area, and the customs, so they can protect you from yourself.
