Misleading title. It should read, according to what Allan said, is: Rotational Grazing is NOT automatically Holistic Management. e.g., Farmers like Greg Judy sometimes have to deal with pasture that got ahead of his system, passed through the vegetative into the seed stage (losing flavour ...).

Not really. It's a list of buzzwords with some climate alarmism tacked on.
We inherited a very over grazed dry piece of land. I started researching how to manage it and found Allen. I love what he has to say. In practice it's harder though, it's not feasible for us to mob graze. We have to buy, feed, truck in/out and sell the animals. That's a huge amount of money, labor, feed and water. To lease other people's animals, has the same problems, plus health risks mixing herds and stressing cattle out. People don't want you to keep their cattle for just a week or two. Also we have a problem of invasive forage species. I talk about some of this on my RUclips channel, but not in great depth. Nobody really cares.
Just use animals your land can carry. Put down seed just before turning your animals in onto it, and just before a hard enough rain to drive the seed into the trampled area. Pay the most attention to when to put animals in (soft boot stage) and when to take them off (two leaves intact). Each spring you'll see more reward. You are not using your head and missing the point. In climates where it is winter half the year you modify by bale grazing using the same principles. If you have an overgrazed piece of land you adjust your stocking density and movement to accommodate sure you may have to supplement with feed at first but it takes time and effort and constant thinking

Variable paddock size vs fixed. That's the most obvious diff.
In my opinion....holistic land management means taking into consideration everything you've said here, so when we look at the title of this content, it's quite misleading. Leaving the land alone isn't holistic management, overgrazing isn't holistic management, and rotational grazing isn't either? Then what is holistic land management? I'm not so sure I understand the message here.....I do understand rotational grazing, and I do believe in soil management. There are folks out there practicing holistic land management and there are folks out there overgrazing and overworking the land, mostly due to lack of understanding or financial gain. The world wants cheap food and this comes at a cost to our planet, however our planet is the ultimate healer of itself....I guess I'm a bit confused about the title of this piece....holistic land management and appropriate rotational grazing heals the land and builds biomass and soil. Nature does the work, we just provide the most healing environment for the soil, plants and animals. Nature gets it right every time

Rotational grazing means the farmer says 'I have X paddocks and I will put the animals in each one for X days.' Holistic management involves wider decision making and obeys what the grass is wanting. Example: put animals on when the grass has a soft young seedhead, and move them off to another area when there are 20cm of leaf length. On bare areas put the animals in to make lots of manure and tracks, then move them. Scatter seed and straw to cover it if you can, or just let grasses sprout when it has some rain. Let me know what you're doing, I'm a beginner at this and I'd like to learn too
I'm just an econ student at uni, found Savory's ted talk fascinating, tried to find out more about it and was discouraged when all I seemed to be able to find was before and after photos along with incredibly vague descriptions of the "holistic management" process. This sent alarm bells ringing in my cynical mind. I understand wanting to protect intellectual property, Alan Savory seems to have been working hard on this for many years and should get fair compensation. But, given how Alan claims this is the *only* way forward for the world, I can't help feeling he ought to be a bit more open about the specific processes that take place between the before and after photos. He could easily rattle off a few examples (as you have above, for which I am grateful) which, I feel, would help his credibility. Because we know Alan Savory is not without his critics.

I know what you mean.... I understand what he's saying, but I've never heard him say anything about the actual procedures or management.
Savory speaks as if doing something that's not in its most optimal possible form is totally wrong and of no benefit. Simple pasture rotation is worlds better than feedlot farming. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good Allan.

Yea, no you can manage land, there is bad or even wrong ways to do it, but yes you can successfully manage and improve land. So unless I completely misunderstood what you just said, then you are incorrect. Humans are reversing desertification all over the world through land management, most of which revolves around intelligent case by case scenario, which does include mob grazing.
In other words, he's to lazy or self entitled to manage land correctly which means it's wrong and shouldn't be done.
I wonder if rotational/mob/adaptive grazing are essentially the same as holistic management but that Alan has made or is trying to make holistic management into his brand as a money spinner. He keeps shouting that action must be immediate but he refrains from giving details of his method which would hasten action. Other sites on rotational/mob/adaptive grazing give much more detailed information.
Sooooooo.....what you're saying is that rotational grazing can be holistic management as long as you approve of how it's used. That seems conveniently self....well everything.
Holistic management isn't just about grazing. It's a management system for making decisions and can applied to entire farm and more broadly to cities or countries and not just cattle. For example, if a town in Africa needed a new road coming into it people from the west could donate to have a big contractor come in a make the road, but if holistic management was applied it may be deemed best to pay for the people of the village to manually make the road themselves-it could be done for less money and all of that money would be paid to the people of the village. It's a decision making process-you put your ideas through a filter. It helps you answer questions you would have never considered previously. If a solution doesn't meet the criteria to check all of the boxes then it is deemed the wrong idea. It forces you to reexamine why you are making the decisions you are making. The outcome is unknown, but the solutions in the end benefit you in the most productive way because the whole is the primary concern.

I wish I could put to words how much I hate the word "holistic". Mr. Savory, yes you can manage land, and manage it well and properly. Your system of management is exactly that, land management. FFS And thank you to M. Voisin for changing Mr. Savory's views on cattle, as he used to be much like the envro-mentals who said cattle must be removed from land in the SW USA. The cattle were removed from many areas, and ecological disaster ensued.

Holistic just means whole. Like a holistic dentist knows about the whole body, holistic management is a decision making process that takes in everything into account including the lives of the farm owners. Holistic is a system used to find out what you want and why you want it and what's right for you and your farm.
Holistic shmolistic. We need as much regenerating "desert" and correctly grazed pasture as possible, ASAP

From my admittedly limited understanding of both,I think you are correct. And it seems to me like they put it on steroids and rotate daily.
Holistic management is management which uses tools and methods to take the whole into account. Rotational grazing is but one tool.

You can probably sell this concept to Berkeley college trust fund kids that have never had to cut their own grass at home!
I can read some comments about this video that dont understand the relationship between farming and profit,...mostly city people, never get mud on their shoes..
I think what he’s saying is:
1) “Mob grazing” meant taking the grass below 8”.
2) You absolutely cannot have some plan in your head or on paper for moving the cattle and just follow it, not taking into account the weather and the height and health of the grass. You have to be in the field everyday, evaluating the grass.
3) You are managing soil health, grass health, grass roots, types of forage: cold season, warm season, etc.
There really is so much to regen grazing. You do have to both play God, and work with Mother Nature.
Not a job for the lazy or half-hearted. You have to make soil health YOUR LIFE!
