What they always fail to mention is the *history*. *Apartheid* South Africa, Namibia and the Rhodesian government confiscated over 80% of agrible lands, and forced the rural indigenous into these deserts, forever depending on aid. This is still the case in much of Namibia and even still in South Africa. And largely why white farmers were being attacked decades ago in Zimbabwe. The British never met their end of that bargain, which was in fact negotiated as a key priority at Zimbabwe’s independence. So in the end Mugabe and his supporters took it unto themselves.

Much work goes into climate research and data suggests that while holistic grazing is great at combating desertification, it is about 6-7 times less effective at carbon storage than Mr Savory claims. It's not a bad thing, it's absolutely fantastic. It's just not a panacea for climate change. I guess kids should know that too and be able to change their minds if new research shows otherwise ;).

The Rockies region saw this with the reintroduction of wolves. Exactly. It is very hard to achieve the same with humans herding cattle, we need to re-wild these areas, not try and control them with herds of livestock so we can kill and eat their meat at 15 months old. Animals in a herd would live more like 20 years and their carcass would be returned to the ground. It's a very different system, we need to allow predators back into these lands.

In this world where theatre and "alternative truth" is operative to the extent that it is, rational and logical thinking will be silenced by all means possible by those whose financial interests are threatened. Irrespective of how logical and thoughtful Mr. Savory might be in his demonstration, altruism will be opposed by ignorance, suspicion and denial. I don't have ruminant animals of course, so I use earthworms to digest all garden waste along with leaves I bring in to feed them. They recharge my soil for each subsequent growing season. The best methods are actually to re-wild the land and return it to natural habitat and species. Humans can't help but try and control nature, but in the end we need to let go and return some of this land to the native species. For more info, check the video "OSAz-A7S8ow" for a full explanation of where he went wrong.

Nothing he did hold true under intevestigation. His killing of the elephants was unnecessary and the overuse of cattle is too. @@Seraphim262 I don't think that's entirely true. There is scientific work happening that doesn't completely invalidate components of holistic management. Balance in everything, my friend. No one is saying this is THE solution to all the world's problems, but it could CERTAINLY play a role in grasslands, savanah, and scrubland where desertification is occuring and seasonal moisture is the norm. It IS a management of land that mimics nature, but I also don't think anyone is suggesting it should REPLACE nature, either. WHat about using this technique to reclaim degraded land and turning it back over to nature -- allowing native herds to expand into those areas? I mean, let's not be so rigid. We need to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero, but this is also a tool in the toolbox and you can't argue with the potential socioeconomically stabilizing effects of this management practice!

We added hand chipped prunings and dead trees, and added that to the soil. Each compost pit was allowed to cure for three years, thus the reason for four. Our family garden was 2 acres that also feed the town relatives. We also supplied most of the eggs and meat for the family besides our own needs. Grandpa did this because there was more than we needed. Like I said Below Old School Technology that modern man had abandoned in favor of Chemicals and poison pesticides.

It's, the system of cattle herd grazing in agriculture fields, been practised traditionally in India till 40 - 60 years ago. Obviously the animals love to move every single day, i.e. rotational grazing, to escape their own dung, urine litter. 👍👍👍
The bare minimum requirement for healthy soil is that the Bio-mass grown must be returned to soil.
Usually, it takes around 7 - 9 months for the biomass to decay and become part of soil, but with cattle eating the same and giving back to soil in semi processed form, it takes 7 - 9 weeks for the same thing to happen, being enriched with Microorganisms.

I would like to plant a few hectares of forest to increase the amount of rain and improve the soil's water storage capacity. 80 years ago Ethiopia had 75% forest cover, today it is only 2.7%. I think that if you overgraze any piece of land without more nourishment, or without the land having time to recover, it WILL lead to desertification.
The clever part of Savorys plan is that the animals were kept in the kraals [?] for 5 nights, in between grazing the surrounding land during the day. Then they were moved to another section of the planned area, to repeat the magic. The land that had had the 5 nights intensive trampling, manuring and 'watering' was 'loaded and ready to go,' and once planted up, produced a crop. I assume the planting followed the animals and rotated the crops, rested fields and freshly manured fields, to create a fully rejuvenated area that could sustain people, land and animals alike. Actual soil gradually replaces dust and sand and becomes productive. Even a rejuvenated area would need sustaining regularly, but keeping the land able to absorb any rains, fresh manures and seeds planted would ensure that it would help sustain its productivity. Plus, and it's a big plus...it puts the local people in charge of their own welfare, which is a huge incentive to any community.
It's such a simple, common sense idea, but obviously no-one has come up with it before. It is taking the cooperation of whole villages working together, and combining their animals, which must have been hard to do at first, but they did it...saw the benefit, and have reaped the rewards... which is wonderful.
Its unbelievable that more governments have not thrown money at the project, it's helping people help themselves which is always the best way. But sometimes governments don't see the bigger picture.

And now you know how toxic the colleges & unis are.
People think they are intelligent b/c they got a degree when it's the exact opposite.
Do you know who controls these institutions & I'm talking from JK on up to HS, not just college & Uni.
I'm glad you are waking up. If you want to learn more, reach out.

Many many thanks to Allan Savory and the Centre for Holistic Management . I watched this video after watching a short video about the dreadful Monsanto debacle in Puerto Rico, which takes so much from the country and gives so little back. But after watching this extraordinary and transformative presentation I felt such a sense of hope because these solutions are already proving to be achievable, effective , and environmentally and socially sustainable, giving livelihoods and climate justice to people who are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.

God Bless you Brother You have managed the impossible bringing the technology back from our grand and Great Grand Parents. Modern man has forgotten the old ways sadly. I was raised by my Grand Father who was born in 1870 and died in 1968 (God rest his Soul). But this was exactly how he managed his ranch in Fallbrook California when I was a kid in the middle 40's through 50's. Carry on Sir with all due respect, from another old guy.

another option is to replicate the work of the beaver...we nearly eliminated this engineer in many areas and so humanity must continue the work of this natural creator. Creatively shaping the land recharges aquifers, slows the water and allows it to absorb rather than shed this precious resource.

i've seen successful examples of permaculture in greening desert, but again the overall rainfall only supports grazing animals, which would need to be managed in this holistic method to sustain them. perhaps the overall rainfall would increase over longer periods after large scale growth because of increased humidity

we face drought in many areas... fires and erosion are killing the place. Permaculture and reshaping the landscape will surely work to hold the water better than expediting it to the ocean as the "conservation district" does.

I am deeply impressed wih the work you are sharing. I came across this video months ago, and it is still open on my computer, now! I would love to somehow work with you. By happenstance, I met up with your cousin outside Pretoria a year or so ago... We talked at length about your work before I got on a plane out of there. Much previous to that, I was blessed to partake in a workshop at a farm in Kansas, where I was introduced to your work in the US. I spent almost two years in Africa, from before the pandemic, to after, and I plan to be back there as soon possible! I would love to visit your location - and in whatever way I can - I would love to empower many MORE people to know about what you are doing, and learn how to do it also... especially in Africa and other remote areas around the globe! I deeply respect what you have uncovered... It is valuable beyond measure!! And I would say, there are SO many who can learn from your work. I look forward to meeting you one day not too long away! Thank you so much for all that you do!
