A small tip if some of you want the custom thumbnail to look EXACTLY like the image on the painting itself: there is an "export" button next to the Custom Thumbnail tab. If you click on it and resize your painting image to fit the little white square (like when you are making the painting), and then import the file, your thumbnail will look exactly like its bigger counterpart.
I know this is an old video, but this is the ONLY video that helped me. Thank you so much for this video! If anyone here is on the fence about following this tutorial for whatever reason, FOLLOW IT.
I wish I could understand how to use photo editing programs, it's all so incomprehensible to me. I don't have the money for photoshop, and it's the only one I vaguely understand how to use (because of school)
Whaaaaat I watch all your videos and somehow I have missed this, which is right up my alley!!! I used to do all this stuff on photoshop with previous sims but when I looked up how to do stuff this time round it didnt seems as simple! Thank you for this video James, Legend!
awesome! Always wanted my photo's to be in the game! You can do the image overlay in Paint, open two Paint programs, have your photo in one to be resized and the export from the studio in another. All you have to do is select you photo than mess about with it to fit in where the photo will sit. You save than import it in to studio. You don't have to have Photoshop.
Thank you! I've watched three other videos trying to explain this and I was so confused! Thanks for explaining so well! I love making family portraits of my sims families!
For anyone looking for a working tutorial, I managed to follow this on March 24th, 2022 and got some pics up! Some things are changed, but overall it's very helpful still ❤
Thank you so much for the easy step by step tutorial. What key do you press to switch the colour swatches of the paintings before placing it on the wall?
Thank you James! One of the many reasons why I love you. I have always wanted nice decent pictures of the sims family I'm playing. The pictures you can take that are placed in the sims inventory do not cut it for me. I will be doing this instead. Thank you again. I'm really sad I missed meeting you while you where in Boston. I was very very sick and in bed for weeks. If you're ever in Boston again I'd love to meet you!!
I don't really like using cc but I want a family portrait for a legacy I'm playing atm that isn't the awkward looking one they have in game so this is super helpful 👍🏻
Had no idea it was this simple to create your own content! I was wishing I could decorate with some of my own photos in frames instead of the basic ones that all look horrible.
Good job. It was soooo easy thanks to you. I never knew that I could just use the png-files (watched other tutorials where they used the dns, which I cannot relate to it. Working with Photoshop was for me easy.
I just saw this yesterday and made my first item today! This is amazing, Im so happy that it works with other programs as well, I used it with paint.net for instance.
OMG! I am so happy! thank you so much for sharing this video I was able to create my very own creation :D I love downloading all kinds of CC and I have over 1000 of other user creators content, now with this knowledge I shall create 1000 more of my own CC. haha! I hope the game doesn't break.
waiting for James to use this to make color swatches for things like beds so that he can laugh manicly while house building bc he overrode some of the more shoddy choices
I tried this out today from screenshots I took in-game of Selvadorada. I don't have Photoshop either, but used Paint.net for photo editing. It's a free program and easy enough for newbies with a few extra bells and whistles.
Well judging by the comments most people do not have photoshop. I was wondering if the next time you make a video you could use Gimp. I would love to see you do WallPaper Flooring, and Beds with textured or Patterns on the Blankets. Thank you so much for making this I am totally going to try this in gimp. It is really awesome that recolors are so simple. Thank You again
this tutorial is all well and good but what about changing the paintings in which your sim paints while using the easel? When leveling up your painting skill you see the same things created over and over again. When you paint an impressionist painting say on a large portrait canvas your sim has about half a dozen creations. I get tired of seeing the same picture being created over and over again.
Just tried this myself for the first time. Followed your instructions but used Paint instead of PS. Looks fine in Sims Studio 4 but when I load it in the game it shows up as an object with rainbow colors and question marks? How do I fix this?
it works but when I try to place my painting in my game, the image i wanted the paining to be wasn't there. it was just a question mark with a purple backround. help please
You have to make sure your image is divisible by 2. Ie 32x32 or 32x64. It doesn’t matter what size. But ensure the image is divisible by 2. If you look at the original image when you export. Make sure your new image is exactly the same size. I had this same issue.
Hi! I tried this but it didn't work and I don't know what I'm doing wrong :( The first time I tried it showed up colored purple with a question mark, but I thought maybe it was because I changed the name of the package file, so I tried again but the second time it is literally invisible. The painting doesn't appear, I can't see it :(
Okay so third try and I found out the problem. The texture pictures, the base, had to be exactly the same size, but like, exactly XD I used a different program to edit them and the image changed size, so it didn't work. The only problem is when I size down the images they lose quality, but it's okay I guess, at least I know it works :)
James I love you !!!! This was so easy and I've bin trying to find out how to make cc myself for sooo long. Thank you thank you thank you!!!! And if I'm not mistaken it is a Rise of the romb raider picture you have in photoshop graphics right ? idk why I'm asking xd, I just noticed it.

So, for a building idea how about you try and recreate one of the dollhouses from the game into an actual sims house?
Troy Ritter I had the same idea!
Oh that’s a good idea!!! 👌👍
That would be hard
Three years later still waiting lol
This helped a lot. I've always wanted to be able to use my screenshots in game as a family portrait and this showed me how. Thanks!
I know this is an old video, but this is the ONLY video that helped me. Thank you so much for this video! If anyone here is on the fence about following this tutorial for whatever reason, FOLLOW IT.
Now I know how I'll be spending my weekend! XD
maychanx31 sad xD
I wish I could understand how to use photo editing programs, it's all so incomprehensible to me. I don't have the money for photoshop, and it's the only one I vaguely understand how to use (because of school)

I needed this for family portrait picture frames! Thank you so much!
You've taught so much about Sims 4...all of which I use. Thank you!
awesome! Always wanted my photo's to be in the game!

I just saw this yesterday and made my first item today! This is amazing, Im so happy that it works with other programs as well, I used it with paint.net for instance.
This was a really great and easy to fallow tutorial. I'd like to see more like this one how to alter items in the game.
This was supremely helpful and I hit that sub button quick!
This is definitely helpful! You should consider doing another for furniture or wall textures, since you said they're more complicated.
OMG! I am so happy! thank you so much for sharing this video I was able to create my very own creation :D I love downloading all kinds of CC and I have over 1000 of other user creators content, now with this knowledge I shall create 1000 more of my own CC. haha! I hope the game doesn't break.

Anyway cool video James xD
Hi James! I love your channel!
Really helpful tutorial! Big thanks 👍
Thank you, this video helped tremendously!!

It saves to downloads, when you want to then import it to sims4studios check download folder.
This is really helpful, thanks!
Thank you sooo much James ☺️
Very good tutorial and simple :D Iam subscribing.
Halfway in the video I'm like : "why do I watch this? I don't even have Sims 4".
MrDingez same here 😶
Super helpful! Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I was hoping to do this for my game.
Unsure what I am doing wrong, but the pictures become completely transparent when I try to place them on the wall, so they don't show up at all.
i have so much respect for cc creators now lol
Hi!
