I wish I'd seen your video before buying my DisplayLink dock - I didn't think there was any other option. Great to know that USB-C/Thunderbolt is built into the kernal, will keep that in mind on my next dock shopping trip!

You saved me! I couldn't get my expensive Pluggable display dock/splitter to work in linux. Turns out it didn't work in Windows either. It's an issue with my laptop's USB-C port. Then I noticed the display dock has a USB-C to USB-A adapter. I plugged into USB-A instead and it worked in Windows. Switched to Linux, and it works there too! Now I have 4x 4k 60fps external monitors on my laptop in Linux! Thank you!

After displaylink (udl) was merged into Linux kernel, I think it has worked quite well, not like before where you had to relay on a 3rd party driver.

I have the same ThinkPad dock , and a Lenovo Legion 5 pro. And it works really well on Windows, used the Legion PSU directly in the ThinkPad, and it works great (so i can use the dock for traveling as it is much smaller and lighter).
But i am not satisfied with compatibility on Linux. Sometimes when disconnecting/reconnecting monitors won't turn on, usb devices work.
Switched back to windows when i bought it, as i had a lot of work but just integrated a ssd and looking to dualboot.
Any advices on software side of Linux? What distributions are you using btw?

A random USB-C dock worked on my Debian Buster(factory default kernel) x570 based desktop on first try. Unfortunately, it lasts only about 2 hours when a display is attached to it due to heat. Then I have to disconnect and re-attach everything and wait 5 minutes to cool it down. That kinda depeats the purpose of it but I suspect there are better quality units out there.

hi, thanks so much for the video it helped me out a lot (although i got a displaylink dock before switching to linux and finally i got it to work).
I was wondering for future reference, whether it is safe to assume that thunderbolt / usb ports on docks have display capabilities or they may not - similarly to your descriptions of thunderbolt ports which may not carry displayport capabilities in laptops. I was thinking of a use case where i would get a dock and plenty of monitors to exhaust all the hdmi slots on the dock and still be able to connect monitors through a thunderbolt port on the dock.
    cheers as always!

It's amazing how i ran into you through duckduckgo search and instantly subscribed.
you just covered this whole messy topic with edge cases (that i personally ran into as well ;d), giving a customer literally ALL knowledge that one needs to buy fitting accessory.
Thinkpad E595 user here - i needed 15" laptop with numpad and AMD CPU. Basically i've just left my good old Dell e5570 with insanely convenient dock (last designed with this huge connector on bottom). Of course, laptop seller sold me DisplayLink dock which quickly turned out to be pain in the ass due to not only work "decently" under Windows, but having this crippled lag between mouse movement and cursor reaction. Moreover, Ethernet speed was capped at aroung 380Mbps, and depending on complexity of image presented on external monitors, this speed varied xD.
Then i found genuine 40A9 dock and quickly turned out that it's expensive but price equals quality. full GbE experience, two DisplayPort connected FullHDs and still some usb port were available. Sweet.
Only pitfall i've ran into is unability of "graceful eject" of dock. Once i disconnect it and reconnect computer later, strange things are happening. From not supporting USB ports to not showing image on external displays. Maybye it's another edge case, dunno really, however it's heavily limiting because i need to choose working scenario before i actually start to work. This is being linux only flaw, as i can mess with (un)docking as much as i want under preinstalled Win10.
    Am i missing something? FC32, 5.8.17 kernel, i3wm.

Wonderfully useful video. I’m in Canada, if I switch to the Canadian Amazon following your link will you still get an affiliate fee when I pick up the Lenovo dock? I’ve been looking for one that’ll power my X1 Extreme so I’m glad you mentioned it. LearnLinuxTV Really happy you enjoyed your time here. It’s a funny cliche but Canadians by and large are indeed friendly people. :)
I think I’ve heard you say your in Minnesota, if I’m remembering correctly I spent some time off in your neck of the woods (and in Wisconsin) fly fishing and found everyone there just as nice and when it came to advice on lakes to fish and flies to use I got excellent advice. :)
I guess we’ll see if Amazon is smart enough to track county changes. I mean they must be right, it has to happen hundreds or thousands of times a day since most links you come across are for the US store but people buy from everywhere. Well know if you see an affiliate fee in late January because that’s when I’m going to grab my hub (since Christmas tends to eat up discretionary cash).
Happy Holidays and thanks for all the great content.

I ended up watching this video because I'm having problem connecting 2 monitors (dell ultra sharp 25) to my laptop Gigabyte 55w v6 which has an HDMI and VGA output. I've tried several adapters like USB-C to HDMI like StarTech CDP2HD USB-C to HDMI Video Adapter Converter - 4K 30Hz or Unitek Y-6316 USB3.0 Type-C to HDMI (4K) Converter but none of those worked for me, despite that they are compatible with Ubuntu. I found out that my problem is my hardware. My USB-C doesn't support alt DisplayPort over USB-C so I'm pretty much fucked. I was advised by a person from StarTech that this adapter STARTECH USB32DP4K USB3.0 to DisplayPort Adapter - 4K can do the job. Now, this adapter use DisplayPort & DisplayLink 4K Plug-and-Display.
