To anyone whose C3/C3esp is only slightly out of spec (like, the burrs make contact at 7 or 8), I managed to restore mine to acceptable concentricity by tightening it as much as it could go (at this point around 1), then heating the section with the burr (no handle or grounds collector) in boiling water. After heating for a few minutes, I found (with the help of tongs and a tea towel!) that I could tighten it further to 0. At this point I let it sit in the boiling water a few minutes more. Then I took it out, and left it to cool still at 0. Having cooled, I found it could now rotate freely within spec (6 and above). For those with only slightly eccentric grinders, this might save you all the messing about with unscrewing the fixed burr, which I found to be a real pain with mine (and trying to make this easier is how I stumbled upon readjusting it with heat). It does leave the fixed burr unshimmed of course, so a sharp impact (like dropping the grinder, as I discovered) would push it out of concentricity again.
Another trick is to tighten down the center of the burr into the outer burr but with the locknut loose. this alines the burr assembly. you then tighten down the locknut. It then spins freely at four clicks or less. thanks!
Hi, could you elaborate on what you mean by tightening down the center of the burr into the outer burr? Do you mean unscrew the locknut, then get to 0 click?
@@musicianoffailure-3804 Loosen the retaining ring for the outer burr, tighten the cone burr to '0', then tighten the outer burr retaining ring. This works because the conical (cross-section) shape will self-center the outer burr to the conical burr piece and become concentric.

I just bought c3s version. The seller said its upgraded version of c3. I don't know if I'm just lucky or timemore really fixed the issue with outer burr alignment. I do test my grinder and i only hear burr grind sound only at first 3 click. The 4th is all clear, the casing / handle can spin freely.
My new C3S after just a few cups spins clear at around 4 clicks, where Timemore recommends 6 as the minimum setting. If I spin just the outer burr, it looks perfectly centered!
Hi Tom. Thanks for all the great videos. I have a question. My timemore c3 pro esp is somehow misaligned and when I turn the dial to maximum it stops at 1 instead of going all the way to zero. This happened after I disassembled it and put it back together. Do you know how to calibrate the dial so that when it cannot turn anymore it reaches the '0' indicator on the bottom.
Hi and thanks for the video. Anyone found a better tool for removing the lock ring. I have 7" circlip pliers, but they won't open far enough. I think the pin tips on 9" pliers might be too big.
One year late, but I've just encountered this video. My Chestnut C2 (though with metal nut) is spinning on first click and stops touching on 3rd. It's 3+ years old, seem I'm lucky enough to have it properly working.
I've noticed another important effect to keep in mind when using this grinder. it is made of thin aluminum (and not thick steel) and aluminum conducts heat very fast, so the heat due to the friction while grinding will fastly reach all the inner and outer burrs (you can feel some heat on your hand, when grinding). the heat do expand the metal inside, lessening the gap between the burrs and making them somehow collide (if, prior to grinding, your setting was that they were just spinning freely, to the lowest click possible). my advice is to make your experiments, because the poor thermal management of this grinder can affect (and deteriorate) your burrs. I ended up using this grinder only for moka pot (where the grinder is coarser than espresso), so to avoid any problem.
Hello Federico, thank you for that feedback. I’m afraid all grinders that I have seen are made out of aluminum. Steel would make them very heavy. In both metals conduct a lot of heat. Have you found a better hand grinder for similar price for espresso?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner I have also the 1Zpresso JE and it doesn't have this thermal issue. it has its own (different) flaws, but overall I think it's a better grinder if you're grinding very fine like the espresso.
Hey Tom! Thanks for this vid! I picked up a Timemore C3 Espresso version with the 30 click dial wheel - so perhaps don't need to shim this device. This vid was helpful to see you grinding to an espresso blend using a manual grinder and using a standard basket. I've been using my grinder with the dual wall basket with my Bambino ... but now might have the confidence to go with the standard basket as it seems like you CAN grind fine enough. Not sure how fine to grind though use the C3 Espresso so if you have tips that would be appreciated - e.g. how many clicks back from 0 would I start with to dial in.

I am wondering, did you change the settings on your DeLonghi machine to be able to get a shot is about 30 sec with the 1:2 proportion or you are using a standard one? I couldn't see which button you pressed and whether you hold it or not. At the moment, to pull a shot I have to press the button (for single espresso mode) and hold it until I get the right coffee-to-water proportion. Normally I can get 30-32 ml of espresso from 15 grams of coffee in around 24 sec, I am using Timemore Slim Plus with the burr set at 8 (doesn't go finer).
Hi Alex! With the Dedica, I just set the 2 cup button to be way too much, but stop it early. I like to either measure it with a scale, or eyeball it. Thanks for the feedback on the Slim!

What could it be with C3S Max, after i tighten and loosen to 7 clicks, i go to grind first beans, then i tighten back to finest but it goes 10 clicks? Somehow it loosens turning grinding

Hello! Nice video by the way! Is your c3 a bit loose after srewing? I mean, the bottom part where you adjust clicks. the "clicker" itself tends to rotate a bit (left and right) (without clicking ofc)
Yes, thanks! But I mean, this big "screw" where you place two "wheels" has a small loose , about 0,5mm or less, and it allows to spin the "wheels" about few milemeters left or right (because of the loose on the screw), i bet its normal (Sry for bad english hah)
Does this grinder have enough clicks for espresso? Or did you modify it somehow? I make espresso on one grind - I get 70 grams of coffee in 25 seconds, I do one less click - I get 10 grams of coffee in 25 seconds or something like that. :(
I've noticed this issue about my Nano shortly after I got it (burrs touching at 12 clicks as well). I've done quite a research and found a few posts on Reddit that were describing the same method that you've used. After trying it, the burrs started touching at 10 clicks - still too coarse for any attempt to make an espresso though. I've retried it now, 10 clicks it is for me. It's not that much of a deal as I use it for my office V60 anyway, but if someone wanted to have one main grinder for all types of coffee, I'd probably suggest going for something else.
The problem with the Chestnut C3 is that it doesn't have fine grind settings. C3's 80-83 microns per click is too big compared to 1Zpresso's 8.5 micron per click. So there is no way we can perfectly tune the C3 grinder for espresso extraction. There is only one setting for espresso extraction. If we go 1 click above then the extraction is going to get delayed and if we go 1 click below then espresso will get extracted more quickly. Not perfect for espresso lovers. Go for the 1Zpresso.

@@akselerant Hi there! Well, the dosage depends on the roast. Medium roasted beans are denser than dark roast, so you can fit more in the basket. For example, on the Dedica, I try for 14 grams of darker roast espresso. But if I am using light or medium, I can fit even 17-18 grams, due to the higher density. Also, if a 2:1 ratio is taking more than 40 seconds, you are likely grinding too fine. Try 2-3 notches coarser. Maybe watch this video: ruclips.net/video/RLdQXlhUX8M/видео.html
Cheers, Tom
Ok tom s I'm going to try right now I'm going 2 thicker clips to try, but first of all thank you very much for responding, I also received an 18g ims barista nano basket today to see how it goes.
Oh Tom ,thank you very much ,I tried the hack temperature too,now I will know that dosage depend on roast.I will try with fresh roast coffee and give the feedback to you.Sorry for my not so good English)I hope you saved my espresso )😊And another one question, Do I understand correctly that for different grains it is necessary to use the maximum dosage in the holder?
Toms where can I buy a used grinder that is good better than the one I have encore or should I not buy another one, and keep trying
@@victorm.claudio7801 why did you copy my words of my comment
how to replace the lid timemore c3
What do you mean by lid?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thank u Tom for your reply . I mean the plastic lid cover on the crank
@@lucasyu9224 I don't have this grinder anymore, but I think that it was metal. Anyway, to take that apart, I think you'd have to pull a pin.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Tnx Tom
You better use some thread lock paste to fix this issue.
I'm not so sure I'd want to use that though in a food product...or do they make food safe lock paste?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner you put it on the threads only, It doesn't touch the coffee, or you can use teflon tape. Just need to fill the threads a little bit fermer.
I think only the nano have this problem cos my c3 didnt move when i spin it
Hi Gary, thanks for that feedback. Still a good thing to keep an eye on. Cheers!
My c3 has a lot of give to it, it's really loose like his nano, but my burrs don't touch until 4 clicks. I feel like the give is definitely an issue, but for my purposes it is still usable.
This video must be earlier than now )before I bought another one grinder ,now I have chestnut and kingrinder)
So which one do you prefer?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks for answer Tom,kingrinder k4 is much better than C2 ,burrs synch best ,but I have standard portfilter on my EC685 and today I tuned my C2,I think keep it for alternate methods. Thanks for you tips, burrs is sync better a Little bit after this. I would be glad if you recommended a dosage for a standard portofilter, because I can't repeat the result. I don't know what the reason might be.Now I use 14g and 25 sec,but sometimes there is an acid taste ,not a delicious shot, and you do it so easy and perfect ,I’ll be glad for your help.
You will just need to experiment with your dosing, as well as trying the steam temp hack: ruclips.net/user/shorts8GO1b94CgN4?feature=share

😮 cool
I have a C3 and it has zero gaps that you can put a shim to. So its not good for C3
I think that Timemore has started to correct this shimming issue in the C3.
not working on C3
Rats! Maybe yours was already tuned well?
Does this apply to C3 Espresso?
I've heard the C3 is better, not requiring shimming.
I use a c2 with that new knob from c3 esp and it takes about 10 minutes to grind 18gr on click 25. I hate how long time it take to. Is it normal?
It should take like 40-50 seconds.
