funny I watched that video last night...will try those toners! thanks my natural hair is a pretty gray...everyone loves it..and highlighting my whole head and putting the ash in blending my gray so well! amazing!!
Finally! Someone who understands the needs of really dark brunettes who want to transition or blend their grays. For those of us who have been a level 3 our whole lives, the gray new growth is so obvious, but taking our entire head of hair from that dark to silver is way too drastic for most. My clients just want enough to blend in with the new growth, they don’t necessarily want to be fully grey. I’m doing “silver lights,” where I just create salt and pepper around the hairline and parting. Less labor intensive, and less time consuming, too. 😞😉
Yes! I’m starting the transition at 38, and have been looking for someone to talk about us dark brunette’s! I have more grey in the front than in the back of my head! She is explaining it so well! ❤
I finally found someone that is clear honest and has the exact hair I’m going for! I have that same skunk pattern as you. Your hair and style is my ultimate goal. I’m currently going to try this on a 613 wig. I’ve been natural for years but did always color it dark ash brown. My white finally said No more! It turned orange and I didn’t know I had to layer so I gave up. I however have always loved salt and pepper hair and I’m growing it out as far as I can before going to a color specialist to highlight tone and chop of the 14 inches of dark. (I know there’s far too many layers of dark ash brown, with overlapping and really want to start with virgin hair). I have at least 8 inches of white new growth and I’m restraining until I get to at least 12 inches. Thank you so much for this information. Can’t wait to view your other videos.

I love your hair, that is the style cut I usually wear, I'm 63, just not ready to go cold turkey yet. I have brunette hair, tired of how fast my silver antennas come out literally only 3 days from dyeing my roots/tired of the Cost these days. You give me hope when you say, one can do it,. I dye my hair once a month, get my roots done, when I blow dry my hair/or flat iron it sometimes, my ends look like I highlight them, but I don't, also I know the sun lightens my hair, so I'm a brunette, but with a few other colors going on, so always nervous about starting the transition, TY for your time, Great video!
I got you! First thank you for your kind words and watching my super amateur videos. Next, I completely understand all the fears and you are not alone. I too was exhausted constantly coloring and it was my biggest motivation to transition. If you’re not ready but want to not color in the future, one of the things you can do is move to a lighter, more translucent color. This will give you a better line of demarcation and help you move out of color when you’re ready. If send me pics of your hair I can tell you how to change your color and you can do it all yourself. juliethehairapist@gmail.com

I am thinking about doing something like this on my grey hair. It is all grown out but, it isn’t white, it’s salt and pepper and very dull looking. I’m thinking about doing some white/silver highlights in places to brighten it up as the way it is now it just looks awful with my skin tone. My original hair was very dark brown with some auburn in it a bit. I just hate how dull my salt and pepper turned out. Not silver enough at all.
A silver highlight is a great solution to transition but also if you don’t have enough (quantity) white hair. A money piece especially will add brightness and be the same tone as your natural silver and that makes it a better choice for silver hair. A traditional highlight is warm in tone and clashes with our silver. If you send me an email I can send you pics an intentional silver highlight. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos. juliethehairapist@gmail.com
@@juliethehairapist I am hoping I can get a highlight that is cool in tone as I did dye my hair once too a cool ash blonde and it looked great! Then I grew it out to this, whatever this is. Thanks for the offer! I will email you!

I'm transiting to grey and absolutely love everything about your hair!!! Your haircut is what I have been looking for... What should I request from my hairdresser to get this exact cut?
@Sarah Simpson Thank you! My hair is medium density so I can’t do a lot of layering in the back because it makes it too thin on the bottom. Ask for a frame face and minimal layers in the back. We do need to layer some of the back or it looks like a ledge on the bottom. Thanks again for your support.
You are a great teacher. I followed your instructions but I couldn’t lighten all the way to light yellow, got scared after 45m processing. It turned out nice, grayish blond 😅. I’m giving it some time to heal the damage for now, but will do it again for sure. Thanks 😊
@Lully Olivia thank you!! And I’m so happy you were successful!! You can use a darker grey toner if you want it too look more metallic. But as you saw for yourself just getting it lighter helps. If you try again it will lighten more but much quicker and only apply the bleach to the orange color any light yellow leave it alone. Hello. First, I want to compliment your generosity with sharing your trade secrets as well as going so far to demonstrate the process. Kudos to you! I am embarrassed to admit, I still don’t understand this full process. When you refer to the “money piece” what does that describe please? Would you mind my sending some pictures to your email of my graying process? Thank you, Pam
First thank you for watching my super amateur videos! Your question is a great question, the money piece is a few highlights that are specifically around the front of your hair line. This will create brightness around your face and camouflage your transition because the front of our hair is what is mostly seen. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the way juliethehairapist@gmail.com
So bummed. I used Joico pewter on my mom's snow white hair mixed with iora's silver . It looked blue and we washed it out after 8 minutes. Sadly it didn't do anything. I don't understand how it grabs on your white pieces........ Should I try black next? TY,
@L F I got you! What was your goal? Pewter and Silver are light colors and will only get rid of brassiness (yellow) on our white hair. If you were trying to match old artificial color, these colors are not dark enough. Also when I areas the ingredients for the Joico brand it has a lot of “conditioner” ingredients and that can be a problem for our hair. I love Joico but maybe not the best brand for what we’re doing. Let me know what your trying to accomplish and I can send you some links.
Can you use this idea if your hair is natural black ? I am 55 years old and I have at least 6 inches of grow out of white/grey/ silver that ends in a hard halo around my head. My black dye is semi permanent and my grow out is now dye resistant I am told. Finally, I have bangs, tapered pieces around my face and my hair is cut blunt at the top of my hip bones. I consider my hair healthy as I don’t over wash, blow dry or straighten. I know that was probably a long post and I apologize but I have never posted a question before. I cheerfully wait for any advice you can offer!!😊
@Kimberly Vickers sorry for the late response. The answer is yes/maybe no, yes, you can absolutely use this technique to camouflage the line of demarcation. The maybe no is it may not lighten enough because of how dark you have been coloring your hair. The good news is you can always do a strand test to see if it will lighten enough. That way you don’t waste your time and money trying to do your whole head if you can’t get it light enough. Please feel free to mail me pics of your hair and I can give you better advice at juliethehairapist@gmail.com.
Ask for the pattern of the highlight to match your natural pattern as much as possible. If you have solid white streaks, they need to do back-to-back foils in that area. In addition, it looks best if the highlights underneath or in back are a balayage method which puts more color on the ends, then at the scalp. Don’t let them bleach your entire hair or use color remover. No bleach on the new growth. If they don’t tone it to a color you like don’t worry, we can easily fix it with a $10 color from Sally’s. My industry is highly undertrained, but hopefully you found that needle in a haystack and they will do a great job! Please feel free to contact me for any help along the way.
I luv your hair especially as you have that silver streak at front which lifts the darker colour. But what can I do to lift my grey which is ALL the darker grey. Thanks for lovely video
@@juliethehairapist I will send photos by email Julie. Would be delighted to get some help. I have been growing out my hair for nearly twelve months now!
My mom has always used henna and she’s been growing her hair out for about 4months. The henna is almost faded out but there’s still a level 7 of warmth on her natural hair. Her Grey hair hasn’t kept any of the henna. Can I just put a Demi ash brown all over using a 6v developer? I just want to get rid of that warm but with out covering all her grey. Her natural color is a medium ash brown.
@xco.2384 Yes/no, Yes on the hair with Henna only but if you put it on her new growth or natural hair color it will leave a line of demarcation because it has a developer. If you want to put something on her new growth to match the artificial color you need to use a direct dye or temporary color (hair color with no developer). If you send me pics I can send you links for the color juliethehairapist@gmail.com and thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️
@user-nr6sb2fe7b Thank you! A direct dye is hair color that has no developer. But unfortunately some manufactures do not label color hair color correctly. A true temporary or direct dye hair color does not have a developer but some manufacturers will label it “semi permanent”. A true semi permanent has a developer and is actually permanent. Developer is peroxide and peroxide will leave a line of demarcation. That’s why I only like using direct dyes to either tone in transition or at the scalp while transitioning because they do not have a developer and will not leave a line of demarcation. We traditionally use direct dyes on bleached hair to make the hair a wild color like blue or purple, etc. But for transitioning we can use a very light lavender (aka silver) to tone a highlight that matches what pattern you have and the color will end up being silver instead of blonde. Using the direct dye will give me the correct color but not mess up the natural color. If I use it to touch up the new growth while it grows out, the direct dye washes off after several washes and will not leave a line of demarcation. Thanks again for watching my super amateur videos.❤️
Hi been watching your transition videos and so so happy to find some one who innerstands how to start without going mental. Hence my dilemma, I have had ash blondes with lighter highlights for about 20 years. My crown is very very white silver and I would say my under hair is looking salt & pepper my brown is mixed when I leave the regrowth longer. I cannot buy the vivids in silver here in UK only the smokey silver do you know if its the same. Postage from US TO UK is astronomical. For a tube.
I can send it to you but let's see if we can find you something that is easy for you to get. Do you have any beauty supplies near you? If yes send me a link to the beauty supply to my email juliethehairapist@gmail.com and pics of your hair. I promise we can find something that will work.
I completely understand, I’m extremely visual and need to see most things to understand. The link below is an announcement for going live but it also shows a transition highlight that I did on a new client. It shows how light you need to get your hair, that I didn’t highlight the new growth (natural color) and the silver toner. You will see that if you place enough highlights that follow your natural pattern, it will result in your highlights becoming more of the color than the old artificial color. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos.❤️ juliehairapist@gmail.com ruclips.net/video/YKHX4UBuB_s/видео.htmlsi=pWvKXHipF-deloJx

So I decided to stop coloring my hair in December and have since then became obsessed with gray hair! I turned 45 in February and so excited to see what pattern will be however I recently put a temporary color on my roots to help the awkward phase (my grays are only about 2 inches long) and I’ve regretted it ever since! I’m concerned the color is just gonna stain the grays and won’t ever come off forever dying my grays pink (the temp color is like a dark wine color)! My question is will the temp color eventually come off completely or can I expected it to be forever pink!?
@Oneida Compeau it will eventually fade it will just take a while. Wash more often or wash a couple of times when you wash. You can also help it fade by shampooing with shower gel instead of shampoo, shampoo is designed to not fade color. You had the right idea with semi-permanent but because my industry is so bad they sell semi-permanent as temporary color, but if it has a developer it will permanently change your color depending on the level of the developer. A temporary color will camouflage your outgrowth and completely wash off. Send me a pic of your outgrowth and I can send you temporary color suggestions. Congratulations on being free from color, even coloring with temporary color is easier than sitting in the salon or using permanent color at home. juliethehairapist@gmail.com

Started watching your videos and they have inspired me to get some grey highlights. I have untouched hair, with evenly spread out grey. I am only about 10% at this point, but with my dark brown color it really stands out to me. I long ago decided I would not dye my hair when I got older. Now, at 55 it is time to embrace the grey and I am ready. A year ago I only had a few strands. So, do you have any suggestions for those of us without hair color? Do I need to wait until there is more grey? I hope not because I hate how the white just stands out on my dark head. Thanks!
@White Shadow Fare if you don’t like your natural silver but also don’t want to color a great improvement is a money piece highlight BUT the highlights are toned to silver with a direct dye. This will give your silver a pop of color but the color will match your natural color as opposed to a golden highlight. Yes you are coloring but this highlight is simple, quick and only needs to be done 2-3 times a year. If you want to send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice. I am a warm burnette with white growth around the front of my face. I am going to start with the money pieces. What silver toner do you recommend after bleaching?

My Gray hair is like you es but the side that I part my hair my white strip doesn’t show. I don’t part the other because I have a remolino swirl it won’t stay in that side. What do you recomend?
@Lydia Cedeno yes you could have your stylist or you can do it yourself, put a highlight where you want it but tone it to silver. This will look natural and only need to do be redone every 4-6 months and it's just a few packets. If you email me I can send you pics of a client that had her stylist do this for her and it came out great. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤ juliethehairapist@gmail.com
@dimmi77 a direct dye is hair color that has NO developer (hydrogen peroxide) also labeled temporary color and sometimes semi permanent. Unfortunately my industry is horrible with the labeling. Direct dyes/temporary color work off of porosity and lightness of color. If I have dark hair I will see no color change but if my hair is blonde (natural or bleach) or grey (which is actually white hair) any color will show on that lightness of hair. But because there’s no peroxide it will completely wash out after time. And they feel like a conditioner on the hair.
Hello Julie, I'd like to let my natural grey show and am not sure how to do this (I don't have the patience to let it grow out). I used ColorOops to remove the boxed dye and that worked well but then I put on loreal feria smokey silver which gave really unsatisfactory results. The top of my head was quite purple and the rest of the hair looked dull and almost dusty. I'm willing to try a silver highlight again but am not sure which product to use? Can you recommend a good grey hair color that won't make my hair purple?
I have streaks in the front and and mostly dark everywhere else. Wherever you see the green that is my white hair. And thank you for watching my super amateur videos.🙏🏽❤️
Julie, I have white grays on my roots. I’ve colored my own hair for years now. I’m always trying to cover the grays. So I can see now that I’d like to very slowly begin a transition to silver hair. I’m not ready for it yet. I currently color my hair a dark golden blonde from Sally’s Beauty. So, I was thinking I could start by changing from the dark golden blonde to a dark ash blonde since eventually I will need to get rid of the golden tone in my hair. Is this a good place to start? If so, how do I do it? Or should I begin with highlights first?
@Mary Vogel you can do a couple of different things depending on your comfort. The first is temporary color because it completely washes off so you can use it to touch up like normal but with the understanding that it will wash off so as it grows you will have more and more color to touch up. You can also do a highlight and then tone to an icy blonde and you will instantly blend the line. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice. Thank you for your support❤ juliethehairapist@gmail.com
@@juliethehairapist Thanks, Julie. I just colored my hair so my grays aren’t showing much at the moment. But, I’ll take a picture of it when it has grown out a bit. 💜
I have naturally curly hair, warm brown (color only the outgrowth). I have salt and pepper growth at the crown and a little more solid around the sides. Do I ask my stylist for back to back highlights on both my crown part and sides?
@Kristi Dockter where ever you have sold white requires back to back foils or to create a "money piece. In the end we need to pick up as much white hair only when ever possible. But any lightening helps if you artificial color is darker than what is coming in aka your natural color. Following your pattern as best we can is th goal. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️
@nothing works works A direct dye is hair color that has NO peroxide/developer. It’s a “what you see” that comes out is the color. You have seen these colors before but we can use them for a better silver or to put on our new growth for a camouflage until our silver grows out. When you see someone with a pink or blue hair, that was achieved by first bleaching the hair to light yellow then applying the direct dye (pink or blue). Here’s the dilemma, the industry DOES NOT label color correctly. A true direct dye will be sometimes labeled “direct dye” but many times they will label it a “semi-permanent”. So when you’re searching for these colors you need to look for temporary and semi-permanent colors because of the incorrect labeling. Look for the wild colors (blue, purple, etc), in the directions it will say “preferably used after pre-lightened” hair which means “after bleaching”. Our hair is white so whatever color we put on our white hair that will be the color but slightly lighter (white+brown =light brown). Because the color has no developer it’s only sits on the outside of our hair shaft. It will get lighter with every wash until it’s gone. When we’re using it as a toner for the blonde highlight, to camouflage the line of demarcation it will not change the color of your natural color and mess up your progress. It’s another great way to use direct dyes on our silver hair. If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice on color options for your hair juliethehairapist@gmail.com. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️ Here’s a couple of examples of direct dyes/temporary hair colors. I have warm blonde hair and want to transition to my gray. So are you saying I need to do an all over ash and then get highlights? Or just highlight it and tone it to silver? I'm so confused.
Sorry about the confusion. A highlight that is toned to silver, the highlight needs to match your pattern and you don’t touch the new growth. This will remove the line of demarcation. Some people will bleach the entire head and then highlight but I’m not a fan of that method because it’s too many chemicals on the hair.
I’m about 45 minutes from San Francisco. If you’re not in my area I can still help you with a roadmap for your stylist or temporary color options. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos.❤️
Julie I watched this video so many times my dramatic areas are mostly underneath and few, but my new growth is mostly dark but has has light highlight like grays ...no halo.. I tried to explain to hairstylist I wanted to stop dying and grow out dye by breaking and blending to natural color. She highlighted three times and I’ve used your video to highlight lighter, added semi permanent titanium which is really like gray, my question is, as the dark on top continues to grow out, how do I handle the longer halo of dark and not as thick natural gray and highlights?
Yes, anything that doesn't have a developer is temporary color/direct dye. Your porosity will determine how long it lasts. Applying to clean, wet hair makes it easier to apply and wash off quicker.
I love Pravana Vivids Silver not smokey Silver. But there are lots of great toners out there, here are a few the firsttwo are direct dyesso youdo not need a developer. The last one needs a 5 volume developer which you can make by diluting 20 volume. You can test it on a strand before you commit and if it grabs too dull or sometimes too violet, apply to wet hair to control that issue. Hi looking beautiful as always, Love the way you explain things to wanted to ask how about if you want to transition with low lights if you don’t want to put bleach in your hair what do you think of something like that?????? Thank you for sharing god bless 👩🏻🦳👍💜
Hi Norma, thank you for your support. I'm not a fan of low lighting because it makes the hair darker and your natural is lighter. The best way to blend is to match the brightness that is coming in. But there are other solutions can you send me pics of your hair through my Facebook page or email juliethehairapist@gmail.com and I can give you better advice. ❤
@Kat Brinson UGH my industry!!!! Not only will it look great but blondes have the easiest transition because silver is just another blonde. Please send me pics of your hair I can help you with a transition toner and you can easily do this yourself. juliethehairapist@gmail.com and thank you for watching my super amateur videos
Sorry for the late reply I was on vacation. I can help you pic a temporary color to camouflage your outgrowth if you don’t want to do highlights. Send me pics of your hair and I can send you pics and links for temporary color. juliethehairapist@gmail.com
Hi Renee, there are other silver toners that work, the most important thing is they only work on hair that has been lightened enough. The color that didn't get highlighted will not change in color the toner will have no effect on that hair color. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the juliethehairapist@gmail.com.
@Karen Wells Approximately 2 years to shoulder length 3 years for bra length, etc. If you shave it off it will take 2 years to grow back. Hair grows about 1/4" a month. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️

omg! I did what you said. had highlights put in my brown red hair! and put the ash in ...it worked! its beautiful and everyone went crazy with compliments. didn't touch the gray so that looks like gray and white highlights. Hard line is gone! Yes yes yes! My hairdresser understood the transition goal.

Hello my fellow loving human! Yes we let them do it their way and we help! ❤️❤️❤️
I love how you have explained this. Where are you? I need an appointment. I don't want to damage my hair. I'm scared to death to make an appt.

Please feel free to contact me for any help along the way juliethehairapist@gmail.com and thanks again for watching my super amateur videos ❤️

@ 5:57 you talk about bangs. How can we get my bangs to salt pepper and NOT completely grey?
Is salt and pepper your natural color or you want to add silver highlights to your bangs?
Hi, I’ve got silver and black natural hair every time I do low light on my silver hair. After few shampoo that low light disappeared
What developer are you using when you lowlight? Sometimes using 20vol developer doesn’t allow the color to deposit long enough.
Getting gray blending in about 3 hours from medium brown dyed hair. So nervous, I hope my gal knows what she is doing! 😬

Hey there. This was so helpful, but what is "direct dye"? Is it the same as toner, and if not, how is it different?

My hair is naturally dark brown but it’s dyed dark chocolate brown. I love this idea but don’t want to end up with silver and gold hair. 🤦🏻♀️
Thank you for watching my super amateur videos.❤️ juliehairapist@gmail.com

@@juliethehairapist Gotcha. Why not an acidic toner? Why the choice to simply stain the hair? Is it because they can grab dark?

@liliann gandia so sorry for the late response, it's my son's last year of high school and he has me 🏃♀️. I'm in Moutain House about 45 min from SF and 5-6 driving hours from LA. I would love to help you even if you can't get up this way. Please feel free to contact me juliethehairapist@gmail.com. And thank you for watching my super amateur videos. ❤
@@juliethehairapist thank you for responding so quickly! I will email you some pics later on today, I would send them here but I’m not seeing that option. Talk with you soon!
@@juliethehairapist I just sent some pics to your fb messenger rather than your email
I need your help! Have dark brown hair w some grey growth. I want to start grey mini highlights. What do I do?
@dimmi77 I would love to help you. You can definitely transition with a highlight but the highlight needs to follow your natural pattern or a money piece (front only). If you send me pics of your hair I can give you better advice juliethehairapist@gmail.com
love your explanation 👌 I'm a level six so how do I get rid of that line ? I don't want to touch the regrowth as that will defeat the purpose.
You have two choices a highlight that matches your natural pattern of silver and then toned to a silver color. The other choice is temporary hair color on your new growth only and only where and when you want. @Maria Trimbali Temporary color will color your natural color but translucent not opaque and it will wash off completely. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the juliethehairapist@gmail.com and thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️
@@juliethehairapist oh thank you for your reply 🙏 yes I will keep going as I dont want to go back covering my grays every 2 weeks . blessing to you lovely 😍
Thank you for watching my super amateur videos juliethehairapist@gmail.com
me too
I am a warm burnette with white growth around the front of my face. I am going to start with the money pieces. What silver toner do you recommend after bleaching?
@Brook O’Neill my favorite is Pravana Vivids Silver but there are many brands that are great, even Sally’s has a great silver toner. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the way and thank you for watching my super amateur videos juliethehairapist@gmail.com
What do u mean direct dye toner?
Yes, can you send me pics of your hair through my Facebook page or email juliethehairapist@gmail.com. So I can see what the different colors.

Where is your salon located 💁🏻♀️💁🏼♀️
I’m in Mountain House about 45 min from San Francisco, CA
I like your hair color. How many percent your gray hair? Thanks 😊
Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️
what is direct dye?
Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️

@@juliethehairapist what about Kleenditioner? Or Overtone? Will that get rid of yellowed/orange brown hair?
I have warm blonde hair and want to transition to my gray. So are you saying I need to do an all over ash and then get highlights? Or just highlight it and tone it to silver? I'm so confused.
Sorry about the confusion. A highlight that is toned to silver, the highlight needs to match your pattern and you don’t touch the new growth. This will remove the line of demarcation.
Some people will bleach the entire head and then highlight but I’m not a fan of that method because it’s too many chemicals on the hair.
@@juliethehairapist Thank you! I'm going to try the highlight toned to silver. Would a Shades EQ color work for that?

Do you still have a line of demarcation? Can you send me pics of your hair and I can give you better advice juliethehairapist@gmail.com.
Would be nice if I lived near you, I would come see you to transition my hair to silver.

@@juliethehairapist Thank you. By chance you aren't in Florida are you? :-)
I did it. I am not able to post photos for you to see.
Is Punky Color a direct dye?
Yes, anything that doesn't have a developer is temporary color/direct dye. Your porosity will determine how long it lasts. Applying to clean, wet hair makes it easier to apply and wash off quicker.
Great video! I have bleached my dye to light blonde with several inches of silver white coming in. What toner would you recommend for the blonde?

Are there different color silvers or can everyone use the link you have below? I am trying to transition from medium brown
Hi Renee, there are other silver toners that work, the most important thing is they only work on hair that has been lightened enough. The color that didn't get highlighted will not change in color the toner will have no effect on that hair color. Please feel free to contact me for any help along the juliethehairapist@gmail.com.
About how long does this take?
@Karen Wells Approximately 2 years to shoulder length 3 years for bra length, etc. If you shave it off it will take 2 years to grow back. Hair grows about 1/4" a month. Thank you for watching my super amateur videos ❤️
