- In this Gene Kelly TV Special, Donald O'Connor performs a version of his famous "Make 'em Laugh" dance number from 1952's "Singin' in the Rain". The only thing is, it's a different song! (This time called, "Smile, Darn You, Smile"). Also featured is Hal Smith (later "Otis the drunk" from The Andy Griffith Show). First broadcast November 21, 1959.

I wish this guy was still around. I loved watching him dance and perform.
Truly amazing talent and energy. Donald was in the same class of awesome talent as Fred and Gene.
their equal in both song and dance.
Happy New Year 🎊🕛🕛🕛🎊🕛🕛🕛🎊🎊🕛🕛🕛🎊
The very amazing and super-talent Donald O'Connor. totally lovable.
Superb! I never tire of watching this man dance.
There'll only be one Donald O'Connor. Pure entertaining genius!
The best part of these old programs is the fact that no obscenities are used. It's nice not to listen to vulgarity for the purpose of vulgarity.
wow - what an entertainer 🥰 this man
I loved his " Sile darnya" in Singing in Rain...he put most all the components in the routine but made it different which was very enjoying to watch. Talent !to boot.....er...I mean .tap shoes!!! 🎶❣🕺
Love this guy. What an awesome talent.
He was born in 1925, so he would have been 43 or 44 here - yet he could still do a cartwheel and a pratfall with that amazing agility. Remarkable.
Donald O'Connor... maravilloso!!

Donald O’Connor’s choreography from 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain musical dance number Make ‘Em Laugh was rewritten into this 1959 TV version, with a new different song called “Smile, Darn You, Smile”.

Happy New Year 🕛🎊🕛🎊🎊🕛🕛🎊🎊
Happy birthday to Hal Smith btw, our Otis.
Have all of these color NBC Spectaculars been restored and released? I hope so. This was real TV. And it was very early color TV.
Me: Excuse me sir we're closed you have to leave.
Donald O' Connor: Now what
Me: Can we have some music please?

"Tonight's not a night to be sad! Tonight is a night to be gay!"
and this without all the takes needed for the film version.
Ok, so he didn't do the kick up or the flip wall trick ... but still great for TV!
i picked up the dummy and started fooling around with it
Who Framed Roger Rabbit got me here...does anyone else remember this song at the end of the movie?
Yup, it's called "Smile Darn ya Smile"
That was a funny movie but definitely an adult cartoon. I love Jessica's line "I'm not bad I'm just drawn that way" LOL
I was honored in meeting and dance a small dance on stage with him. He was at a fundraiser my mother had taken me to. I didn't make a big thing of it at the time I was only 12 years old and didn't know who he was at the time. If I would've known I probably would've been so excited but I still feel blessed I got to meet and dance with him. I wish I had a video of it but it was before the small recording devices. RIP Donald O'Connor and Gene Kelly who was in the beginning of this video.
It was also heard really when Eddie entered Toontown.
