I put off watching this episode of with Mike as I thought I wasn't particularly interested in the 2 topics, but boy was I wrong. Dude's such an articulate and insightful speaker, he could probably talk about knitting and have me interested. One of the best mixes of entertainment and knowledge delivered per square word in the industry.

Very interesting discussion! I’d like to add some perspective on the body dysmorphia portion. I think some folks may have fears of gaining fat but don’t seek professional help for reasons like one you mentioned- doctors/therapists often don’t pay mind to physique goals and override that by either advising you to stay at a higher body fat % or to gain weight if you’re lean
I think therapeutic remedies are often (ironically) just as extreme as disordered eating/exercise- when a patient is deemed to have an ED, the professionals fixate on the symptom (an eating disorder) and not the root cause (whatever is causing that disorder). This leads to treatment plans centering solely around force-feeding, gaining fat, adding calories, etc. I can’t fully speak for ED treatment, as I haven’t been treated myself, but from many people close to me with EDs over the years, this is a really common problem I hear
I think modern therapy is still very behind the times and can cause body dysmorphia to get even worse at times. If you take someone struggling with an ED and force them to get fat without truly addressing emotional reasons for the disorder, it only increases their fear of being fat and furthers the disordered thinking.
I think this is a huge reason that many folks with disordered eating might convince themselves their habits aren’t unhealthy- because the alternative is often more triggering than just trying to find a balance between being decently lean and still working within a comfortable weight goal
This is also compounded by unrealistic Instagram body representations- especially for women, you get a ton of girls that sit around 13-15% bf year round and use PEDs but deny it. This leads the average female bodybuilding enthusiast to feel like they’re just not dedicated enough if they sit at 20% bf on an off season. Seeing constant stage lean images presented as the “norm” really impacts body image and ideas of what is realistic or not

Cutting your calories over night by a thousand is stupid. It's too much it leaves you nowhere to go later on and the rebound is going to make you gain back quickly whatever you lose.

    • @davidnorton2473

Not to mention the fact you will be starving 24/7. Will it work in the short run of course but long term it's a waste of time and you've put yourself through a load of shit for no reason because it's temporary for most people.
