Went to art school and just want to add that most of my teachers did not teach us a thing and gave assignments and then told us to. “Look it up online” if we had questions on how. Not sure how that is much different from being self taught.
    Great video.

Honestly I've always been a font gremlin and a sucker for a good poster, but watching your videos and seeing how much of graphic design is just having fun going all loosey-goosey with it kinda makes me want to just start doing some casual graphic design. All your videos are proudly casual, if that makes sense, and it removes a lot of the "stress" of "real" graphic design needing to be clean and perfect, and I've been binging your videos to get caught up. Honestly, one thing I'm kinda excited to see is your take on trying to do like a real poster of that classic "graphic design is my passion" frog meme, especially after the video making the poster for that tiktok monkey. Great video! :)

I laughed so hard about the 20-50k for a design degree because this is exactly why my American self did not go to design school. Plus, I also calculated the time it would take for the degree, paying back the degree, possibly being "stuck" in a junior role for all eternity paying back loans with interest rates verses brushing up on my skills (dove into web design and photoshop about 10 years ago), taking a course to expand those skills and building a freelance business.
    The freelancing won.

I'm 16, and this was a really great video to have popped up in my recommended today. Instantly subscribed. I've been feeling very lost after going to College this year (UK College) yesterday I missed the chance to switch a course I was doing to Graphic Design and I just felt at loose ends, and just decided to go home and research what art universities I could think of going to, this has provided me with a much better overview of what I want to do in the future, and I really like that you independently taught yourself graphic design and provided yourself with your own job online. This is what I've always wanted to do and it is really my main goal but I'm not sure if that's what Colleges want to hear since to me it feels like they just want to get you into working jobs for corporations rather than independent work. I've been animating and making vector art since I was 10, I'm not really aware of what could be done with these skills, ultimately I'd like to do things online than work for companies (i.e comissions, RUclips... etc) but I'm not sure how feasible that is and if it's even a real sustainable career path. I've appointed it my goal today to start practicing and trying to learn how to use programs like photoshop, premiere pro and illustrator just to be more flexible as I only use GIMP at the moment and I know Universities find it an issue when you don't use the programs they tell you to use. Just generally interested in freelance work but feel I've got no insight on it.

stumbled on this video as a person who just graduated from doing a diploma which took me a year to complete!! you're pretty much on point about having that face to face feedback / classroom setting being one of the best things about design school, it was one of my favourite things from there and have gained new friends from that diploma :) i was forced to learn illustrator and indesign most of all, just the basics though!! ps. if youre in australia, i would also recommend tafe too! they've got this thing where the diploma is highly subsidised (JobTrainer) to put people back to work in response to the pandemic though i do think there are certain things you have to be eligible forso double check with that!! im trying to look for a job atm but its very hard because i dont really have a certain style that is "corporate" or design studio friendly and i think that's going to take a couple of years to figure out. trying not to stress out about it :/

I really appreciated the way you presented your experiences as an option for people to look into, because oftentimes we don't see things as viable if they aren't visible.
I'm kind of at a pivot point regarding this topic:
I'm 24 years old, I have to return to Stanford University in March 2023 to take my last class required (ME 104: Mechanical Systems Design) to finally graduate from Stanford with my Degree in Product Design. I'm on leave of absence right now until March because that class is offered in Spring quarter, and I don't need classes until then. Product Design at Stanford is a program within the Mechanical Engineering department, and it is undergoing restructuring to provide "tracks" for different specialties similar to how Computer Science does with "AI track" or other topics.
For me, I feel like I didn't really get that much out of my undergraduate education so far because I was misdiagnosed as Bipolar during my first quarter there, and had a series of neglectful and adverse experiences and medications with the mental healthcare system from entering Stanford in September 2016. Only until I was 24 years old and 6 years into my undergrad experience, did I finally get an initial diagnosis for ADHD and the go-ahead from my Primary Care Physician to pursue assessment and treatment for ADHD/Autism Spectrum.
Since then I've joined support groups for Neurodiverse people diagnosed later in life and who went through experiences with the American medical industrial complex that detrimentally affected their life-trajectory. It's tough to rebuild self-esteem from internalized ableism and to re-develop a sense of self-efficacy when my track record was destroyed by a mishandling of my disbility.
On a bright side 🌞, the great thing about going to a Product Design program, and the way it was structured during my time at Stanford, was that I was exposed to a lot of topics that I can glean keywords from for my own pursuit.
Actual Mechanical Engineering classes (Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Mechanical Systems, 3D printing, CAD skills like Solidworks and Fusion 360) and the d.school for more 'design-y' courses (Needfinding, User Research, UI/UX design aka "Figma tings") and my Capstone project (we worked on a prompt with VMware and conducted user research with their employees regarding Remote Handoff and the Future of Work for a globally distributed workforce) all nourished my curiosity and although my academic performance was under my actual skill-level due to a myriad of factors, I had a wealth of topics to investigate further :).
It's unfortunate that my negative experiences with the healthcare system have caused me to miss out on internship opportunities or barred me from connections--both because of my Disability status and the way adverse medications affect academic/job performance--but I reframe my new diagnosis as a way to map my experiences and utilize my history to encourage people with disabilities to navigate their pursuit of their own career and life goals to feel like their time on Earth was fulfilling.
Right now, I've been doing remote gigs in Blender for 3D animated videos for a client's performance at a music festival in Philly, continuing my skill-building for Adobe CC tools, and am re-igniting efforts to get my ReadyMag portfolio website up and running.
I've been looking at you 🤓, Elliot, 👁👁and others who are more on the self-taught grindset 😤💯 for building myself up during this pre-return to Stanford pocket of my timeline and really navigating how to rebuild my life given the diagnosis and adjusting my work format to help me accomplish my goals.
*One major tip that might help all the visual learners out there:*
look up "Sketch Noting" , "Doodle Revolution", and "Sunni Brown TED Talk".
For me, drawing, doodling, and sketching information from a lecture or textbook is so much more effective than Cornell notes or scrambling to write what's on the Professors' slide because I'm a very visual learner. I like to draw/Sketch note with a completely blank page 8.5" x 11" cheap spiral-bound sketchbook in a landscape orientation so my hand isn't hitting the spine of the sketchbook.
Research indicates that incorporating 2 of the 4 main learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Reader/Writer, Kinetic)
+ an emotional input yields the best way to cement Processing and Encoding of information. I'm able to recall information so much better because I'm working with my brain's predisposition towards Visual and Kinetic processing and encoding formats, and really finding what works for you is a worthwhile investment of time. Try it out!
Thanks for sharing, I mean that fr + i hope what I shared helps anyone out there who is also at a pivot point in their timeline. It's easy to internalize all the negativity regarding our career paths, and even more so when you are disabled, so remember to execute one thing at a time to prevent being overwhelmed and focus on your growth.
sending encouragement from National City, California :)

i learnt photoshop, illustrator and indesign from a course on udemy. bought the course while on discount and I'm very happy i did. i feel like buying it forced me to commit to it and learn. once i was done with the basics i just kept watching graphic design vids on youtube, so many of them. so many little tricks and tips to pick up from people here. i feel like this combination has helped me learn quite a bit.
unfortunately like you, i feel like I've plateud. i cant figure out what to create and feel like I'm stuck at a certain skill level and its a little frustrating. i also haven't been able to "get good" in any one particular area of graphic design, my niche. i keep thinking one day something will just click and afterwards it'll be a happily ever after. until then I'll just keep watching yours and everybody else's vids here which I'm thankful for

I spent many years thinking that I could learn on my own, until finally, at the age of 40, I decided to enter design school, it's never too late. It was the best decision, since I didn't do it before, I lost a lot of time.

In response to your video a bit that I related to as someone who did go to a film school, the thing with going to an arts school is you’re in a place with hundreds of others wanting to do exactly what you want to do. It can be very disappointing when at the end of the schooling when it comes time to seek out work and all those people are reaching out to the same places you are. It’s a tough place school, it is helpful in ways but it shouldn’t be looked at as a means for employment.

In contrast I went to design school in Sydney, majored in 3D, have done personal project logos w/ Illustrator & certainly don’t share the poster, social media skills! Wanted to comment this in the YT stream that just finished but unfortunately rocked up too late. This video came at the perfect time for me. I've just started my university course in the UK for graphic design. Unfortunately I'm beginning to think it was the wrong choice for me, I'm entirely self taught and have been for the past 2 years. Before uni, during high school I had gained some followers online from my work which had allowed me to build up a couple great clients I worked with. Really wishing I could go back to that path now as the whole academic approach to design is just not for me. I really feel like I could be doing something more valuable with my time and not limit myself as I no longer have time to work on my portfolio. Apologies for rambling on but it was great to see everyone else in the community have gone through this dilemma. I hope I make the right decision, though I'm still very torn on whether I should stay or leave uni.

I wasn't really taught logo design in design school and I graduated from graphic design with a bachelor. It felt like the classes were empty and they expected us to figure it out on our own even though we are paying for the knowledge. Like I struggle really hard with the most basic things, because i wasnt properly taught even tho I spend time learning on my own. I feel like somethings missing. But thats probably my experience with the university I went to. I wish I could have gone to a better one but they were too far away so had to settle with the one that was closer to me. In the end I got this apprenticeship job where I get paid next to nothing ( minimun wage) while working in all sorts of projects, some don't even concern me. But it could be worse. (and they really have bad taste regarding design sooooo)

15 year old me who used to make decent-looking fanmade cd designs for bands i liked on picsart and wanted to go to design school since 6th grade is staring intensely at my unemployed degree-less 20 year old self right now and i don't like it
but really the only reason i didn't go for a design course at my local federal university is bcs i didn't make the cut and got wait listed, I didn't even had a plan B at the time and was more focused on worrying about other people and it has been a tough three years mentally since then
Right now I don't have a personal computer or the money to afford a good one so I haven't been able to even try photoshop and all those big boy scary softwares with too many buttons on them. i still post silly little cd/music related edits now and then for my friends to see and they rlly like it and it makes me happy. they're not like pro or anything (i make them on canva lol) so no one would pay for it but it's actually so satisfying to see the end result.
I like how lightly you carry yourself online and all that design stuff, almost care free, silly, it's lovely honestly. I take things so seriously sometimes is nice to have someone like you and your work to admire.

I’m fixing to graduate with a bachalors of fine arts. I can say design school is great if you can endure a lot of the filler in between what you are trying to learn. It’s great to see and meet other designers that are learning just like you. Builds a network and could lead to other jobs out there.
From my experience school helped me with pushing myself to do more projects. I can be lazy and would push my stuff back if I things weren’t working out how I want it. lol
If I didn’t go to a school I think I wouldn’t make it as a self taught designer. Just because lack of focus. 💀
Overall I believe it’s all about preference and your personal goals as a designer. If you need the push and guidance try design school.
If you have the discipline and focus to learn on your own and network with other designers. Become self taught. :)

Thank you for this video. I've applied to a Graphic Design course at a good arts university in the UK, but I'm conflicted on whether or not I should take a 1-year foundation course in Art & Design instead?
Benefits are that a foundation course is totally free, as opposed to £9,000 a year for a BA.. plus I could choose to take the freelance route 1 year down the line, with no need to spend 3 more years in education. Cons are that the course won't strictly be centred around Graphic Design, which is what I'd ideally prefer to focus on. I'm just not sure if I want to complete 3 more years of a "school-like" system - but would it be easy to get an internship/job placement at 19?
What would you recommend as someone who has been through this process before?

I did a 2 year graphic design diploma and I loved it it was great. They also offered a four year degree but I wasn't really interested in any of the courses and it's not the industry standard where I live, so I think from here on out I'll learn via experience and maybe a workshop here and there. I have MAD respect for people who teach themselves graphic design, but I chose to go to school because I felt if I taught myself while working full time it would take longer and I wouldn't quite know where to find good resources, so I felt it was worth it to pay for that.

Oh God. As someone who has been in art school for 6 years now, the only thing I am pleased with is that I got to have a student loan and some resources to make things outside of my schoolwork (got to love an intaglio acid bath I don't have to worry about). I am not sure if the 6 years of my life are worth it when I think about how much I taught myself outside of my classes versus what I learned in my classes. I think if you are a passionate person, you will get to where you want to be skill wise, and you don't need to go into debt when there are so many free resources online to self-teach yourself.
And my teachers aren't really who I did learn from; it was my peers... so if you are passionate about learning about art or getting feedback, reach out to other artists in your local community and geek out on what you love. Maybe it helps you build networking... but really I know so many incredible and intelligent people that didn't go to school to train for their respective mediums & they are still making incredible work.
I think it helps folks though that do like the structure a school can provide you... however with that structure comes a prescription of skills, approaches and tastes.

    • @suryawrecker1562
      @suryawrecker1562 Месяц назад

Thanks for this. The debt part of this process is scary, comparing the salary you get to what you had to spend. However, the community and design friends you gain are far from that. Aren't there online communities to make design friends? It's quite a lonely path. :)

Actually I did, but this was back in the early 80s when most was done via keyline/paste-up with plenty of exposures within the darkroom for each CMYK negative for plate burning... Computers were still only for certain types of color processing, was expensive, and on a timeshare basis...
When I left graphic design, it was about in the late 80s when the likes of Quark and Adobe were just starting to be taught in college, and the industry shifted gears to graphics wholly created in the computer realm... Old-schoolers such as myself were finding themselves out of jobs, with the internet looming in the future, thus making an art job for me more unstable and impractical... Fortunately, I had also apprenticed as a machinist while still in college... This allowed me to work full time, still pay for my education, _AND_ gave me a more stable occupation to fall back on, should I reach an impasse in art, which I did... I then worked as a machinist until that got offshored in the mid 00s... During my leisure time as a machinist, I took a few college courses in Graphic Design that utilized the computer apps... After that, I started honing my computer art skills sharp over the years and for awhile, worked as a Graphic Designer as a sideline to survival jobs I worked when the manufacturing/machining jobs were all offshored... Thanks to the internet, developing countries, and the newer AI technology, it is extremely difficuly to get work in Graphic Design, so I decided to only do digital art as a sideline, whenever I should get any commissions, or just to keep my skills sharp... I will be retiring soon anyway, so I will only ever do art as a side job now... I just don't consider it as anything practical enough to completely rely upon!

I don't think graphic design is my dream job and never did, i wanted to get money so i went to industrial engineering college (2 times) and got the fuck out of there as soon as i realized it was not for me, so i went the other way around and gone with visual arts, i'm on my first semester and i'm fucking in love with it all, and weirdly i started to get interested in graphic art (basically graphic design presented as a fine art), i think i'm going with that as my academic path for now, and to be honest i think everyone can learn everything i'm about to learn outside of a college, the thing is i'm going to learn faster that way and with other people that are learning roughly at the same pace than me but in slightly different directions and i can see that development and then i can see my development, the whole "art college" thing is just pulling people into a cluster where everyone wants the same thing and at the same time and then it's a residency-like experience to learn with orientation and going through some knowledge that when being self taught would be passed by to eventually come back again, college just makes it more objective and atmospheric, but it's not essential

Hi hello, could anyone (Elliot? someone else?) recommend some channels for basic design tutorials?
TLDR: I too! Am self taught! And a chaotic mess!
I started by making my own adverts and graphics in Adobe Fresco (bc it's free) for my own freelance (also DIY/self taught) shid, and then like most things I do for myself, people started asking me to do it for them! For money!!! This is a good problem to have and I am grateful, **and also** I have a habit of saying yes to clients before I actually have the skills to do things, and I need to stop doing that and learn some basics lol. Sooo yes. Pointers/tips/specifically channels bc I am a firm believer in /RUclips University TM/ would be greatly appreciated. ^.^
