Thanks for that in-depth explanation! It is really nice to actually know how the stuff in your phone works and not just be baffled by the cool names they give to all the different technologies involved.
I have to say, I think it's awesome to see a phone reviewer go so in-depth with the phone displays. I'm someone who will take a gorgeous display over high-end specs. Awesome videos
Actually the processing is exactly the same. The only thing different is that there is sharpening and grain added to your content to make it look like HD.
Most decent white LED backlit displays are close to or meet sRGB. This is the standard that white backlight can reach... Doubt all you want. Yes, most media content available is based around sRGB. I already said that. Content needs to be either color managed to map it's CIE coordinates correctly to meet a higher gamut or the content needs to be made for the gamut/color space being used. The depth just needs to be good enough to avoid banding.
Oh, I recognize you. Yes, I have had it confirmed. It does make sense. It seems that there is compromise with everything. And other people have seen what I am talking about more than a few times. There is nothing wrong with my display. You can only see this when you are not in a bright room. Sony seems to be aware of this.
@3:50 when you were explaining the gamut perceivable by the human eye you wrote on screen "~400-700nm", what aspect are you describing with that metric?
Hi Erica, can you do a measurement of the gamut of a "retina" display from the ipad or ipad mini when you get hold of one or own one? Would be interesting to see!?
This calibration is much further driven into the system than the rom. Someone would need to rework it from the Kernel level. The Bravia processing may go away but, no, calibration with the gamma won't.
Have you done a video for the X-Reality Engine? But what type of display do they use for their gorgeous Bravia t.v?? Anyway, I still prefer this Sony Xperia display because its gamut-triangle does not go too far from the sRGB triangle.
You must be really fun to hang out with! ^_^...Great Videos, Lovely personality, Nice illustration, and lots of hands gesturing which is cool :D Thanks for the videos
I have a doubt if majority of the screen is sRGB, then the media content that is available will most likely be sRGB. If so then what is the use of wider gamut. The colour depth will also depends on the no of bits used. by standard displays are 24bit (8 bit for each colour). does wider gamut means increased depth? If so is there any content made for that colour accuracy and what will be the performance hit for increased depth?
I also wonder exactly what you mean when you say "other people have seen what I am talking about[...]? Do you mean the extreme black level rise when viewed at wide diagonal angles? Or do you mean high black levels in general? If it's the former, you should know my Nexus 4 does the exact same thing at 100% brightness in the dark. It gets almost pure white at very wide angles, and this is a display that has been measured to have a contrast ratio of well over 1000:1.
"im sure she have tons of ppl admiring her " Indeed. However I believe there must be a whole team behind her or at least her geeky-boy friend :-) But if she does do it all by herself then indeed Erica deserves even more respect. Because apart from being cute she knows a LOT more about technology than most of us and explains things wonderfully.
Nicely explained Erica. Probably the best honest review of screens ive watched. brilliantly explained and easy to understand. So ive just subscribed :) So, what phone do you think is the best for 2013 for screen quality and photo taking? personally im thinking the Sony Experia Z1...but Ive been used to the AMOLED screen of the Samsung for a few years now and the S4 seems the natural upgrade. But the Sony Z1 along with the HTC one are pushing the right buttons with me. Im worried about the viewing angles of the Z1 and the lack of. So,Whats your thoughts, and why do you think Sony are struggling with viewing angles on mobile phones considering their expertise on TV screens?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-i9505, unlocked EU model) running a custom Android 4.3 ROM and i love the display on this thing, so much better than the Galaxy S III (GT-i9300) my wife uses. On the other hand, my display becomes really warm after just a few seconds, unlike her's. How does the Z Ultra LCD behaves regarding that aspect ?
great video very informative and actually easy to understand. Thank you. I was gonna get the z or zr but now i think ill wait for the z1/honami do you have any news on that one ?
As far as I understand it, color gamut is at bottom a physical phenomenon. Meaning that if Sony really is using quantum dots for this display, the color gamut will necessarily be wider than sRGB. That's just physics. This is of course, in the absence of weird processing, which may not be the case. Tell me, am I correct in assuming that, were one to put stock Android (or any other ROM) on this phone, those quantities you measured would likely look very different?
the camera takes pretty good lowlight pictures. i see the flash would help with a lot of pictures. new news on the note 3 says that it has a smaller screen. you can go to ericas previous video about the ultra. tbh people are waiting for the honami phone
A very good informational video like always a very well made and information packed video keep up the good work and which phone would you recommend the Samsung galaxy s4 i9500 or the HTC one or the LG optimus g2
Great info. I think the phone is pretty Awesome myself. On a side note being a huge tech fan myself please tell me the CRT in the beginning isn't yours:) Big fan.
are sure? I hope that version got 12m.p with flash. Currently i use my Xperia Ion (LT28) and when compare with Z ultra, my camera picture is sharper than Ultra.Just Utra is brighter. (In Malaysia, ZU already land in the end of July, now ZU are everywhere)
you are on of the best reviewer out there keep going girl dont let the haters ruin your mood always positive the smile on your face worth everything and makes you so cute
I heard turn on auto bright adjustment and restarting the phone solves this issue.... thing is when phone gets switched off auto brightness should be enabled..
Hi Erica, I think it is more looking like the gamut on the site of QD Vision, which is the one responsible for quantum dot display. Check their website
that's actually normal for all LCDs. take any LCD display and pump the brightness to full and take it in a dark room. you are bound to say that effect. even with the htc one.
I'm not sure if this was asked before can Erica herself or someone point me to where I can test the screen gamut myself. It would be immensely useful plus I love this kind of stuff. Btw excellent video. I learnt a lot!
i still have the Xperia Z Ultra and still performs great!
Thanks for that in-depth explanation! It is really nice to actually know how the stuff in your phone works and not just be baffled by the cool names they give to all the different technologies involved.
You are brilliant at explaining and reviewing!
Nice job taking technical subject matter and bringing it down to earth!
I have to say, I think it's awesome to see a phone reviewer go so in-depth with the phone displays. I'm someone who will take a gorgeous display over high-end specs. Awesome videos
Thanks for the extensive explanation, Erica! It's always nice to have a reviewer go beyond the marketing material.
Simply HAD to subscribe to this woman's channel😀
The detail and length are the main reason I subscribed!
No one did an explanation like this. GREAT JOB!!!
Always enjoy your in depth videos! Great job!
That explanation about how LCD's work helped me understand em better, thanks!
Love the way you explained how LCD screens work. :) Finally understood the process. Thanks. :)
I have no idea if or when we will see higher than 24 bit on a smart phone. Lol they still don't have color management for Android.
Great video, Erica! As always, your videos are educational! ☺
Actually the processing is exactly the same. The only thing different is that there is sharpening and grain added to your content to make it look like HD.
Thanks for the detailed video. Can you please tell me how can i get to measure these by myself?
I am picking the winners now. Will announce soon. Won't be giving away the Active.
Finally a video review about Tri-Luminos!

I'd say that 256 levels for 16 million colors / 24 bit is efficient for the wider gamuts we are thinking of.
I just like her narrative voice. But the extra info is a plus.

Interesting stuff, so you don't think they went as far as using the blue backlight and filtering on the Xperia Z Ultra display?
This calibration is much further driven into the system than the rom. Someone would need to rework it from the Kernel level. The Bravia processing may go away but, no, calibration with the gamma won't.

What is the ratio of the black luminance and contrast in Xperia Z Ultra?
Have you done a video for the X-Reality Engine? But what type of display do they use for their gorgeous Bravia t.v??

Finally a person who does a bloody great job on reviews! :D
You must be really fun to hang out with! ^_^...Great Videos, Lovely personality, Nice illustration, and lots of hands gesturing which is cool :D

I was supposed to be sleeping and done studying two hours ago. Now I end up watching tons of her videos.

How did you check the gamut of a display ??
do you know if theres a heating problem with the sgs4? or is that just me?
hi,can you please tell me that how can i get mobile bravia engine 2 along with x reality like your's ..............please reply THANKS
Can you compare this to the S4 display? Both are offering punchy colors but which is better?
"im sure she have tons of ppl admiring her "

agree, my friend has a s4, the colors is over saturated, the black is really deep though, i have z ultra too, love it!!! waiting for the update
How did you create your measurements?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-i9505, unlocked EU model) running a custom Android 4.3 ROM and i love the display on this thing, so much better than the Galaxy S III (GT-i9300) my wife uses. Superb explanation Erica, I actually GOT IT.
Would you recommend this phone for an artist?
the camera takes pretty good lowlight pictures. i see the flash would help with a lot of pictures. new news on the note 3 says that it has a smaller screen. you can go to ericas previous video about the ultra. tbh people are waiting for the honami phone
Are you going to do a review of the new Nokia Lumina 1020?

Which is the better phone? Mega 6.3 or the Z Ultra? And if u had a choice between the two Erica which would u choose? I'm torn between the two.
Hi Erica. Just wondering do u use a screen protector?
The fun comes from the details :)
nice use of the Z ultra!! ;)
Congrats finally 100,000 and counting Yay!!!!
Hi how ru? Thanks for this video .. Just wondering how long was the on screen battery life when u last use yr Xperia Z Ultra pls!? Thanks

Hi TheAngelofmusic1989. Just wondering do u use a screen protector on top of Sony's own?
Hi, could you review the Moto X. I'd like to know your opinion about it.
you are on of the best reviewer out there keep going girl dont let the haters ruin your mood always positive the smile on your face worth everything and makes you so cute
So, the intention to use it as a daily driver; how's that working out? :)
I heard turn on auto bright adjustment and restarting the phone solves this issue.... thing is when phone gets switched off auto brightness should be enabled..
one of the most interesting physics lessons :P
great review!!
So....? My url is still theangelofmusic1989 I merged it with my Google plus. Not a big deal.
Now do the X-Reality engine vs the Brava processing since it's now available with the new update
Have u drop test it yet? X
Hi Erica, I think it is more looking like the gamut on the site of QD Vision, which is the one responsible for quantum dot display. Check their website
Lots of manufacturers do this in order to make colors pop. Sadly, it is not always nice.
Your almost at 100K!! Nice video BTW! ;D
Hey Sony is rolling out the update with the X-Reality Engine, hope to see a follow up review :)
The update is 14.1.B.1.510
i learned alot from you!!!
Yeah that was an amazing explanation; made everything so clear in my mind! :D
When are you going to announce the give away?

last comment , you have got a better video explaining the trilominus display then sony , this , is a fab video , that , breaks it down fully
Great explanation! One question though, does american education teach this at school? or do you learn this all by yourself?
Great video :) to me a good display is very important and you've helped me allot. Saludos desde mexico :)
that's actually normal for all LCDs. take any LCD display and pump the brightness to full and take it in a dark room. you are bound to say that effect. even with the htc one.

wow I learn a lot from this review thank you.
So its more of the same...
How about the quad pixel technology?
