That said, I've met so many cool people on the platform and have enjoyed all of the engagement. I just wish I didn't feel like I have to sacrifice my love for variety to gain a following.

I get you but that sounda like you’re aspiring for your instagram account to be a blog rather than aspiring for it to _grow_ . Most people looking to really grow their numbers specifically are trying to turn social media into an avenue for professional work whether that’s leading people towards large projects like zines, towards buying prints, towards commissions, attracting sponsorships or what have you. In the end I think Josh recognized how this ended up happening. A lot of these people aren’t ready to grow their social media to a point of it assisting them in building revenue with their art. Most of these examples should really only be worried about documenting themselves on the journey, not necessarily looking to grow their following just yet
I often hear people wanting someone to follow others, like following many people on twitter etc etc. Honestly, I don't really have time (nor the brains) to process 100+ people posting content every day. That always surprises me, the fact that an artist really needs to follow lots of people back. Some people get overly emotional about it. I don't care if someone follows many people or not. I'm guilty of not putting descriptions on my art. I never know what to say, but I'll try harder from now on. I should also update more, but I've become very cautious about doing that bc of how easily I slip into the mind set that my quicker drawings are not a representation of my ability, and become discouraged.
I think you did very good with the critiques! They weren't too harsh and you gave real critiques instead of fluff! Also to anyone saying that they want to keep posting a variety of content in regards to both art content and other stuff as well, I have literally not followed or unfollowed an account bc they have had both art and other content and I only want art on my feed for my art account. So what he's saying is true. ☺
this is really helpful!! i generally struggle with descriptions but knowing people do really read them makes me determined to come up with some captions and not shy away from sharing things about myself

Love how honest you are with everyone, wish more people were that way. Definitely going to take your tips into consideration and start making some changes. I have done mostly digital editing and am in the process of learning to draw digitally hoping to share more of my art instead of just the edits. Thanks for all the tips!
This was really interesting! I'm still too sensitive to direct criticism that I didn't submit my insta for this, but I am still interested in what I can learn from the points you give! What I'm taking away currently is: -Unfollow some accounts I'm nolonger interested in (I have 1,024 following, but I'm following 1,678, so maybe getting down to 900 would be better!) -Post mostly finished and clean work, WIPs are okay but make them look more appealing (in my case with digital work, maybe a direct crop of the piece, but with base colors, instead how I am now with you can see parts of the program and there is small text (usually "thank you for joining the art stream" haha) It's only a couple but I'm sure I'll hear more and spot out more stuff! Thank you for these types of videos! Instagram is really a hard place to get noticed it seems, my main account currently is one I restarted last summer, so seeing me almost hit the milestone I last had on my old account after 2 years, almost hit again in 1 year is nice seeing I've made some improvement
I just don’t get it why is it a problem for you having a bigger following number than followers... of course if you are serious about your art you want the other way around I know cause I wanted too, and if you are really not interested on those accounts anymore make sense, but there are so many amazing artists out there how can you be following only 500 people? Like everyday you find new artists who you didn’t know before and they are amazing but you are not gonna follow them cause of numbers? Do people really check your art account and like your stuff but then decide not to follow cause you’re following more people than people are following you? I am sorry just doesn’t make sense.. I was looking to see if someone had the answer, I just found this video so I don’t know if he explains his opinion in another video... I hope that doesn’t sound rude I was just wondering.
@@artbyinesc3267 Mmm I would say I am curious as well! Perhaps its something he noticed that worked for him! I'm still following 500+ artists, simply I just want to support and be able to see their work again! Of course not everyone's art shows up but I'm still there to support when one does show up! I never really judge either on how many accounts one follows either! Its cool if it works for Josh, and think these are just tips then rather a step by step must do! I think maybe its good to have majority of the accounts you follow be art accounts! As sometimes I visit an artist page just to see who they follow so I can support other artists too. ^^
you are brutal, I love this! Everything you say is honest and has reason behind it, you have no intention of being mean or hurting people, but you're not gonna sugarcoat things either and I love that about you
I love this videos of people actually givinf constructive criticism instead of offending, u acutally helped with actual advicea that we could use I loveee it
I've not cared too much about Instagram but this video weirdly motivated me to start putting more effort in. Hearing the criticisms you had gave me a good sense of direction for where I should go with it.
In my opinion some points you criticized are weird :/ Like they should just post one type of content over and over again... I would not follow someone who has no variety in their art. That gets boring pretty fast. Also the no caption and the post that make a bigger one together are personal preference.
I completely agree. I find myself feeling at odds with IG because it seems like you NEED to do the same thing over and over again to amass a following. I like to switch things up a lot and I have no doubt it's ruined my growth, but it's just who I am to continually experiment and I don't want to sacrifice that for numbers.
uhmm the way I see this is that you need to have a consistent armonic feed, it's not exactly about the style, we all follow an artist who's capable of drawing cartoon, anime and realism and still get the likes, what I mean is that you need to have an harmonic color palette, a consistent font-type, a consistent logo or watermark, etc. Did I get it right Josh? :D
I completely agree. There’s a popular Instagram artist who draws photo realistic pretty girls with super saturated makeup and initially I thought “wow never seen that before so cool!” But although they were doing everything right (they had a schedule, super consistent posts, showed progress videos) it just got boring and I unfollowed (not that’ll they’ll miss me lmao they’re hella successful). That particular model feels stifling and I’m too much of an unfortunate mess to follow it 😅 it’ll hurt my growth but life is too short
Dude, the amount of feedback that you gave these people were on point. If I wanted to grow as an artist and needed some pointers, I would seek your help. You were honest and constructive. Keep up the great work.
You were right, some of the accounts you showed had the same issues I'm struggling with. I feel like I'm still trying to find my footing in what I want to post on my Instagram but I know my consistency sucks. I also follow way more people than who follow me, didn't know that was bad gosh. This was actually really helpful and I can't wait to see your video on some of the things accounts get right!
When you know your instagram account is a mess because you just love everything, can't decide and have commitment issues...and it doesn't help when you are a recovering perfectionist. However, I really like some of the things you pointed out though :)
I love your reviews for instagram accounts as well as your roast videos!! I would love to see more of them in the future the insight is fresh and really helps!
So I watched this, looked at my bio, completely rewrote it, and I totally need to work on my posting consistency. Both on style and schedule. Style wise I think I wanna try to emulate Ladowska for the gallery look.
You weren't too harsh at all!! I would love to have my account critiqued. I already know that im not consistent with my post, but ive been working on commissions back to back and i haven't had the time to work on my own art.
thank you for the feedback, josh!! i’ll definitely try to change how i shade (i agree with the stan marks critique, haha, don’t know how i didn’t see it before) and i’ll definitely try to try and finalize my sketches before posting them. thanks again!
This is great! All these instagram artists should be critiqued more! It's easy to think you're the shit when you're on Social Media because of the "like" and "heart" factor. Lets get more studio visits going and critique the shit out of artists!
Omg I didn't think you'd include my account in this, I was so scared hahah.. but for real, thank you for everything you said I completely agree I should work on taking photos of my art! Great video as always and thanks again! 💕✨
I think you had a lot of genuinely valid advice and critiques, but I think its a bit hypocritical how you're telling an Instagram account with 2x your insta following how you personally don't believe they would have that following without them having a youtube channel. Also on your Instagram accounts, you post the same "sketch" drawings with little variety or interesting pieces. Just my two cents, not trying to hate.
I never mentioned their channel, Its based off of my knowledge about the engagement of videos and their post types. You don’t need to have the exact same results to have credible information about a topic. But your opinion is valid as well!
I'd love to see you do more videos like this! It helps pointing mistakes that I have more than just normal tips and your criticism is super constructive so... thank you :)
"You can really grow on kpop, use that" Me.. with my 3 year old stan account with little over 100 followers yet doing most things he said right: yeah... must be my poor lighting choice... right? 😅😅
Your channel is my new addiction; you're handsome, your voice is fantastic, good quality, a perfect teacher and your art is amazing. The perfect combination. Of course I love this video I feel that I learn a lot of things so important that I need to do.
Hey there ergojosh. I enjoy watching your videos, and like your good sense of humor and style. One thing that occurs to me though and bothers me is that it seems according to you, art is all about getting likes, followers and clicks. How about the simple and pure satisfaction of having created something for yourself, and be proud of it! I don't think pure artist make art to get as much attention as possible, and create with that in mind. It is the expression of their personal journey and vision on life?
Joke's on you. My Instagram is just for fun. Not for growing. So There! 😜 .... Josh, you seem to be under the impression that all instagram artists are after followers. When that is far from true. Some artists are just experimenting. Some, like myself, are simply sharing because they can. And some, like yourself, are using it as a marketing tool. Although you made some good points, you only looked at these accounts from a marketing standpoint. I'll use my account as a example (not in vid). I post my new art from time to time. But I also post my old art, so folks can see where I've been. I post about family and friends. I post about politics. My account is labeled under Artists, because I'm an artists, and I post art. NOT because it's only about art. I could easily make a new account just for that, if I wished. But I prefer to use my ArtStation account for that. I also use Instagram as a resource board via bookmark folders. Sorta like pinterest, but one that loads MUCH faster, without outside links.
I'm actually not under that impression at all! I am not sure if you noticed but this is part of a series on becoming a self employed artists by earning a living online with your art. This video is about the value of building an audience and so - followers matter. You are completely right about people being free to do what they want, but this is part of an ongoing series on my channel! Thanks.
Thank you for giving actually constructive criticism. A lot of the time when I ask for constructive criticism I get criticism or “that’s good” and nothing to help me understand what to improve
I enjoyed this. Instagram is not my natural social media, but enjoyed this break down. I'm on instagram but I'm a photographer, I get a lot out of Ergo Josh. Treating your art as a business is the thing he preaches well, which at times feels at odds to being an artist.
Never put effort in Instagram but I do post my art ''regularly'' . I liked this video, it confirms no effort = no followers and that's really cool and explains my account well. The only consistency I have is the theme and in the mean time I try different styles to find my own. I'm planning to take a different approach when I have the style I want, thanks.
your comments to those art accounts is honest, love to see more video like this! it's really help me to improve my content on my art account. Thank you =)
ergojosh: gives critique on growing artists and shows and explains examples into great detail, providing methods for students and other demographics also ergojosh: *this is going to be a cooking video.*
It's frustrating because I know all the things I'm doing wrong, I just hate using Instagram(especially since the major changes to the algorithm) so much that I can't find motivation to use the app even though I know that it's basically integral to having a successful career in art in modern society. I'm glad you made this video, it reminded me to push myself a little further.

@@yukichan177 He never said you should take his advice, it's advice after all. You can take it or not and keep your own ways.
@@yukichan177 his advice to GROW your art page and make art your career but if you are doing it for fun do whatever you want
His face in the thumbnail was so "African Dad" i almost choked
Who else was scared that they were in the video??
Me 😂
What's your IG name?
Me, and my hearts skipped a beat when he saw my account @tout.00🐸🗿 honestly I'm still shaking hahah
I was and my heart raced a little bit when I noticed I was actually there skdhsns
@@blaqartist1162 in my original comment, I meant to say I was scared if I was in the video. (I wasn’t in the video because i didn’t ask to be in it://. I didn’t realize that until later) but my IG is @thegrassygrass
it's quite difficult, trying to be consistent yet also showing that you have diversity and you're not just a one-note artist D,:
this is really helpful!! i generally struggle with descriptions but knowing people do really read them makes me determined to come up with some captions and not shy away from sharing things about myself
Thank you for your advice josh....
Gonna work on myself.
All you said is true anyway...
Thank you for advice.
Please keep making helpful tutorials for newbies like me.
MAKE THIS A SERIES PLEASE I love listening to art roasts and this is some really helpful information about growing your account too
9:52 is me 😂💜
My hands are still shaking lol I can't believe that...yeah well I started Digital art 7 months ago and I'm still new ,the digital ones look blurry because of the wrong size of the canvas + it's on a huawei p8lite phone using my finger😂💔 well..at least I tried.
i think your page is lovely an you just should continue to do what u do, stay true to yourself, i wont take the advice of that person as it seems like he advices ppl to follow what everyone else is doing which isnt a good advice to be honest// he has some nice points but the things he said about art specificly isnt good/ u as an artist just gotta do what makes u feel content, u should post whatever and however u want, the right followers will come and enjoy what u do/

Love how honest you are with everyone, wish more people were that way. Definitely going to take your tips into consideration and start making some changes. I have done mostly digital editing and am in the process of learning to draw digitally hoping to share more of my art instead of just the edits. Thanks for all the tips!
I’d love to see a part 2 to this video! I realized some mistakes I have made now hehe
Idc if this sounds weird but I could literally fall asleep to this guys voice, because it’s just so soothing and calm😌
Take a shot Everytime he said "consistent"
I appreciate you getting to my stuff man! Doing the good work, looking forward to focusing down more
This was really interesting!
I'm still too sensitive to direct criticism that I didn't submit my insta for this, but I am still interested in what I can learn from the points you give!
What I'm taking away currently is:
-Unfollow some accounts I'm nolonger interested in (I have 1,024 following, but I'm following 1,678, so maybe getting down to 900 would be better!)
-Post mostly finished and clean work, WIPs are okay but make them look more appealing (in my case with digital work, maybe a direct crop of the piece, but with base colors, instead how I am now with you can see parts of the program and there is small text (usually "thank you for joining the art stream" haha)
It's only a couple but I'm sure I'll hear more and spot out more stuff!
Everything you say is honest and has reason behind it, you have no intention of being mean or hurting people, but you're not gonna sugarcoat things either and I love that about you
I love this videos of people actually givinf constructive criticism instead of offending, u acutally helped with actual advicea that we could use
I loveee it
Your blunt honesty is refreshing and I love it
2:20 ethan becker mode kicks inn
I've not cared too much about Instagram but this video weirdly motivated me to start putting more effort in. Hearing the criticisms you had gave me a good sense of direction for where I should go with it.
"its just... its just not good um-" i BUSTED out laughing bro this dude has no remorse
I CANT TELL YOU HOW HELPFUL THIS IS
In my opinion some points you criticized are weird :/ Like they should just post one type of content over and over again... I would not follow someone who has no variety in their art. That gets boring pretty fast. Also the no caption and the post that make a bigger one together are personal preference.
He's not saying you shouldn't do it period, he's saying you shouldn't do it if what you're looking for is a big follower base.
Hmm
uhmm the way I see this is that you need to have a consistent armonic feed, it's not exactly about the style, we all follow an artist who's capable of drawing cartoon, anime and realism and still get the likes, what I mean is that you need to have an harmonic color palette, a consistent font-type, a consistent logo or watermark, etc.
You and angel should have a roast match to roast each other’s artwork.
They are both great artists and I love their works equally
That was very useful! Thanks! I'm also new on Instagram and RUclips. Always learn a lot with you!💜
heeey so glad the new video is up!!

LOOOL your intro 😩😂
So I watched this, looked at my bio, completely rewrote it, and I totally need to work on my posting consistency. Both on style and schedule. Style wise I think I wanna try to emulate Ladowska for the gallery look.
The arcade whatever the name was had a dope art style
You weren't too harsh at all!! I would love to have my account critiqued. I already know that im not consistent with my post, but ive been working on commissions back to back and i haven't had the time to work on my own art.

The signs are there... Ethan is coming
thank you for the feedback, josh!! i’ll definitely try to change how i shade (i agree with the stan marks critique, haha, don’t know how i didn’t see it before) and i’ll definitely try to try and finalize my sketches before posting them. thanks again!

I’ve never been more entertained by an art video. So educational and funny. Please do more!
This is insanely helpful. I wish he looked at mine so I could get advice.
This is great! All these instagram artists should be critiqued more! It's easy to think you're the shit when you're on Social Media because of the "like" and "heart" factor. Lets get more studio visits going and critique the shit out of artists!
I prepared a glass of tears made of the people you roasted, want some?
Omg I didn't think you'd include my account in this, I was so scared hahah.. but for real, thank you for everything you said I completely agree I should work on taking photos of my art! Great video as always and thanks again! 💕✨
What's your @ xD ? I'm @tout.00
Wow, actually honest and useful critique. I didn’t expect that, but I’m pleasantly surprised. 👏🏻
The intro lmao😂😂😂
I'd love to see you do more videos like this! It helps pointing mistakes that I have more than just normal tips and your criticism is super constructive so... thank you :)
"You can really grow on kpop, use that"
Me.. with my 3 year old stan account with little over 100 followers yet doing most things he said right: yeah... must be my poor lighting choice... right? 😅😅
Well I guess my following is 100 and the people I follow is 500+ but give me a break its a stan account 😅😅
Honestly love the way your channel is developing lately!
Always get excited for when i see a new upload 😊
Thanks for your support! I am glad to hear that :)
I can relate with all those accounts, I'm struggling to find my style :{
Fantastic video!💜 I look forward to this becoming a series!☺️
Joke's on you.
My Instagram is just for fun.
Not for growing. So There! 😜
....
Thanks.
Omg I loved this! Thank you for the roast! I totally hear what ur saying 😂😂😂
Conclusion: being famous isn't an option anymore
This man’s voice is just so... perfect. Like his art.
I miss simple off camera drawing videos. Not the preachy opinions and discussions. This video was mean and judgmental
"This is going to be a cooking video.."
me:subscribed🤣🤣
Please do more of this! It’s helpful!
This spaceship over mountains lowkey scenario was unintentional or just plain GENIOUS???
Never put effort in Instagram but I do post my art ''regularly'' . I liked this video, it confirms no effort = no followers and that's really cool and explains my account well. The only consistency I have is the theme and in the mean time I try different styles to find my own. I'm planning to take a different approach when I have the style I want, thanks.
Damn he reminds me of Gordon and I’m like “wow nice art” and he’s like “nope “ lol I love it ❤️
I love your honesty and you hit it home. Thank you for such great content! I always learn something...
Man you've such an interesting face to paint! Especially with the beautiful lighting in your studio!
nOOO🤣🤣 you had me at, "this is going to be a cooking video"🤣🤣
His dry sarcasm flew straight over my head and now I finally understand.
your comments to those art accounts is honest, love to see more video like this! it's really help me to improve my content on my art account. Thank you =)
i hope you do more of this because you raise very good points
This was so helpful! Thank you, i needed to hear it!
I love how much your voice is deep.
ergojosh: gives critique on growing artists and shows and explains examples into great detail, providing methods for students and other demographics
also ergojosh: *this is going to be a cooking video.*
It's frustrating because I know all the things I'm doing wrong, I just hate using Instagram(especially since the major changes to the algorithm) so much that I can't find motivation to use the app even though I know that it's basically integral to having a successful career in art in modern society.
I'm glad you made this video, it reminded me to push myself a little further.
you have like a scouter to sense someone's potential power level based on their art
I started watching your videos for iPad advice, ended up staying for your art advice as well!
Love your videos! Just a hobby artist, but watch your videos a lot. So much help for people like me, and obviously for those wanting to be professional artists.
Great tips. Alot did make sense. Thank you for sharing.
Love this type of video! More roasts in future, please!
