A picture is worth a thousand words…
My secret hack to riding better, faster!
One of the best and fastest ways to improve in your riding is with video. I try to get video at least once a month with all of my horses. Your trainer can tell you over and over again that your horse needs to be rounder or that you need to sit back, or whatever nagging habit you’re currently working on fixing, but sometimes until you see it, you don’t really believe it.
Why is this?
About half of our brain is directly or indirectly devoted to processing visual information. And studies show that at least 65% of people are visual learners.* So it makes a lot of sense that video can be a very useful tool! When you have a picture in your mind of the problem that you are trying to fix, it is a lot easier to fix it.
What should you look for in your video?
Rider Position:
Start by focusing on yourself - rather than on your horse. Are you leaning forward? Are you sitting in a chair seat? Are your hands too high or too low? What happens to your position during transitions.
Your horse:
Next focus on your horse. Is your horse moving forward enough? How do the gaits look? I think all of us feel like we’re riding really forward with huge gaits - until we watch the video and it looks like the horse is just barley moving!🤣🤣
Don’t be too depressed! Your horse’s gaits pretty much always look a ton worse on video than they are in really life. For sure video is a good kick in the butt to ride more forward and to get more out of your horse’s gaits but please know that pretty much every horse looks a LOT worse on the video than they do in person!
Next look at your horse’s frame: Are they on the bit? Is their head too high or too low? Are they uphill or down hill? Sometimes it is hard to tell if your horse is round enough when you are riding them - so video is a really useful too for this issue.
Straightness and Symmetry:
Ride straight towards the camera and straight away from the camera. Are you straight above your horse? Are your stirrups even? Is your horse straight?
Take a look at this week’s video where I show you how I set up and use my PIVO for video. If you ride a lot alone or you have trouble convincing your significant other to film for you, the PIVO is a really great tool to help. The PIVO is an awesome gadget that will automatically track your riding. You just simply put your phone on the device and use your remote to start and stop recording.
Do me a favor and try to get a little video of yourself at least once a month. I would LOVE to see your videos on Amelia’s Dressage Club!

Happy Riding!
Amelia
Great demo on PIVO.
But I had to laugh at how cracked your screen is. That's definitely a horse rider's phone 🤣
haha I know! At least it's realistic!
Yes I looked at this last year, watched tons of reviews and vs. this and those others. Pivo still came out on top! I unfortunately have to wait until it's time for a new phone as my current one isn't on their list as supported/compatible 😣
But when that time comes it's ON!!! PIVO has an amazing sale right now too for the equestrian bundle.
Love your videos and emails. Thank you Amelia and all of your "crew".
I just got a PIVO for my birthday last week. Your video is perfect, so easy to follow and relevant to horse riders. You seem to think of everything that we need to know. Also funny about your phone screen Lol!!!
Glad it was helpful! Happy Birthday~
My Pivo always loses me right at the crucial time in my lesson.😱 It latches on to some random moving thing like a tractor driving along outside the arena. I think I’ll try it in the corner, not at X.
Thank you for demonstrating this , I've been thinking about getting one

Amelia u r such an amazing person and i love your videos. Thank u soooo so much
You are so welcome!
Love my Pivo
I came here because this was the first video in my "pivo" search 😅 nice 👍
Thanks for this! So helpful. I borrowed a Pivo to see how it works. Hope to purchase one soon.
Glad it helped!
Been using one for a few weeks and I just wish it was faster and smoother at tracking. Frenzy is still too slow. That and up the quality of video recording needs more options. There are a lot of improvements that could be made. The Remote has a lot of shortfalls and is not designed for horseriders at all. No lanyard, wriststrap or remote recording indicator. It really needs a redesign for horse use. It's a home video meeting gadget still.
awesome, thank you for this. I got a pivo and need to set it up!
Glad I could help!
I received one last year for Christmas and I can not express enough what a game-changer this was for me!! At first, it was like OMG that's not what I thought we were doing, then came some seriously focused hard work this past year and a number of Amelia's programs and I can honestly say this has been the BIGGEST year of change for me!
This is gonna be such a silly comment... but I actually love seeing how cracked up your phone screen is. It makes you seem more real and down to earth, hahaha.
Haha!
How does it know which horse to record if there are several horses in the arena?
That is a limitation. It is currently set up for solo rides only
My question is...do you set the phone with the camera lens in selfie mode? I think that's what you call it...filming from the front of the camera? Thank you.
You can do both, some people prefer selfie mode so they know it's tracking, but others prefer their front camera because it's better quality
Will this work for volleyball with several different people?
Hmm - you might need to check Pivo's website to be sure!
Hello Amelia thank you so much
Im from Holland maybe I do not understand you well
You sad that it looks like the horse is not forward enough is dit really so or do you mean something else
Yes, that is correct!
What happens if there’s more than one rider? Does it capture different people?
Yes it does sometimes.
If I missed the answer in the comments below please forgive me. What type of phone are you filming with, do you recommend filming with a phone or a different option such as a straight camera?
Hi Shelia, I have an iPhone. The Pivo is designed to work with smartphones, but feel free to check out their website and see if they have an option for cameras. pivo.ai/products/equestrian-edition?ref=RVQlHY8xHEy1SA#dawn-main-product__wrapper
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thank you for taking your time to reply to my question! Take Care!
Discount code no longer works :(
Thanks for letting me know. I will check on this
Thanks for this helpful video about Pivo, Amelia. I was just gifted a Pivo by my gorgeous son and can't wait to try it out tomorrow morning. I'm enrolling in Strides today - so hopefully I will be able to join @annettemcnabb3033 in writing a similar comment at the end of this year! So excited. 😀
Yay! Excited to see you in Strides!
This is one of the best videos on how to set up and use the PIVO when riding. You are really good at breaking things down. I've been hesitant to try the remote because it has several buttons, but you make it look simple, just turn it on, watch for 3 flashes and it is recording, turn it off and one flash. That is great information. The remote will really help if other horses enter the arena. One thing I have learned is that because I ride in a covered arena with posts I need to set it up inside the arena or the posts get in the way. Video recording is a game changer.
Thank you! I agree...I'm pretty big on video!!
hello Amelia, are you using your phone mic or does the pivo come with a wireless mic when you ride?
I don't think it comes with a mic, but I'm sure you could get one that connects it or your phone.
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage so is it your phone that's recording your voice during the tutorial while you're on the horse riding?
Thank you for the video! Great explanation. Does the tracking of the horse work on the vertical position of the phone?
It needs to be in landscape to work properly according to the directions
Hi, Does any know if all Amelias videos made using Pivo..? I saw the concerns below about it latching onto random horses/tractors etc and that is what I had heard happens with Pivo. But if it was used to make all Amelias videos then it obviously works well for some people. Thank you.
I don't use it for ALL my videos, and yes- it can latch on to other moving objects. I prefer to use it for personal training when I'm by myself. It's not perfect, but its a lot better than a static camera sitting on the rail!
Im a very visual learner. When I watch back Im normally so disappointed. I can't believe what I think I look like and what I really look like. It is a perfect tool to help me change my position.. 😅
Video helps riders SO much!
I've had a Pivo for a year and haven't used it yet. I felt like it would be difficult to set up so i never took the time. I can't wait to try tomorrow!! Thank you so much 😊
You can do it! Tell me how it goes!
Thank you Amelia!
Thank you for watching!
