Landscape Photography: TORRIDON and APPLECROSS

- In this video I am in Torridon, Northwest Scotland. In some fairly grim weather I head to two locations to capture the beauty of the Highlands.
(nb. The cracks appear as mountain fever kicks in and I have an "Alan Partridge" moment ! )
At first light I take a 3 mile hike to a wonderful Scottish loch to photograph a classic scene of water, silver birch trees and snow-capped mountains.
Despite enduring driving rain, cold and winds up to 35-40mph, I manage to use the 5 minutes of golden light I get to capture two images.
Then as the weather worsens in the afternoon, I try and use the dramatic conditions to head to a waterfall at the beginning of the famous Applecross pass road
This is the notorious Bealach Na Bah road that climbs 2000ft in just a few miles and is always hit by heavy snow throughout the winter and has a permanent snowplough on call . But the mountains and mist just ooze atmosphere and drama.
You may well ask..why do this video in such testing conditions?...Well I certainly asked myself a few times as I got colder and wetter but it's important to show any less experienced photographers what the conditions may, indeed often are, really like, so they prepare properly and do not take the mountains too casually.
But also, I want to convey the beauty of this amazing part of Scotland and always remember that we need to just enjoy the location and accept the potentially great images are just the cherry on the cake if we get them.
I really appreciate feedback and comments and promise to try and answer all constructive questions.

Well nigel you certainly braved it out there lovely photos 📸 spot on 😊
Many thanks Graham..it was a while ago but the scottish weather did it's usual thing and made you question your sanity !
WOW!!
Great video Nigel. You definitely showed the brutality of the weather that the Scottish highlands can (and regularly does) present and all the associated photographic challenges that result. Great images too!
It's an amazing part of the world Chris and the upside of that weather is you often have the mountains/rivers etc to yourself ! Thanks for commenting n watching
Love your videos! Can't stop watching them! Wish you did workshops there, if you could guarantee exactly the same weather conditions 😉
I've found you. A new photographer on RUclips. It's a bit odd how I can subscribe to 8 or 9 channels and RUclips then features them on the right hand menu, right? Well, then every so often, but often enough to keep your eye out, there comes a new person. That was you this evening, April 15, 2021. Catching your two year old program here. I immediately subscribed. Of all the 8 or 9 people on these channels, you have the best balance of tutorial, running monologue, humor (usually self-deprecating veddy Engish ya know) and great tips. Plus it's not all just birds, or just landscapes, or just that or the other. Very varied. I haven't looked yet but I hope you didn't stop in 2019! Ok that's it from here on the other side of the world in NW Washington State, USA.
Hello Breck, yup the YT algorithm about what and when you see vlogs is unfathomable to most watchers and video producers ! Thanks for your kind words. Sadly for various reasons I've not been able to do any more videos since 2019. Best regards to the West Coast
Very nice pictures...enjoyed the video..
Thanks for watching/commenting
You nailed it, again!!!! Love the videos and Torridon, awesome job!!!👍👍
Thanks very much Johnny..hope your photography is going well.
I'm enjoying your tough trip to Scotland Nigel and glad to see you got something from the trip. Its a brutal place at times, and so glad I'm not the only one that the inclement weather follows, when I'm up in Glencoe and Torridon area.
Thanks Paul...I hope it gives a realistic impression of what it can be like but you only need a few minutes of light each day but it's the old adage isn't it..if you're not out there you'll definitely get nothing !!
Cracking shots there Nigel, and a good variety as well. I really must get up to Torridon!!!
Nice vid Nigel, really shows that no matter the weather, we should go out and explore... :)
In Ontario and other provinces of Canada we also have a lot of rainfall, but after winter with a lot snow the consequences are floods. Hopefully May will bring dryer and warmer weather.
Absolutely gorgeous vistas and photographs. 👏 Maybe weather in Scotland was harsh but at least midges flies free. I admire your persistence and sense of humor. Inspiration for going out and to enjoy nature. 🙏 Best regards from 🇨🇦
Thanks Maria...yes this and the last Glencoe video nearly weren't made because conditions so tough but I hope they show it's possible to drag out some images with a bit of perseverance !! As you say, great vistas so nice just to be there. (re midges , you want to avoid the west coast from June to September ideally!)
Nice one Nigel. Trust me, your photos work even better when you know the story behind them and how much you suffered to capture them! :-)
